Regularly during the school year, the Dean hosts roundtable discussions with prominent guests who have utilized their law degrees in a variety of nontraditional ways. Over lunch with a small group of students, guests speak autobiographically about their work experiences, sharing valuable insight about how they found their chosen path. Please note that the roundtables are informal and off-the-record.

Jeffrey Tannenbaum ’88, who will be the Dean’s guest on Thursday, November 19, formed Fir Tree Partners, a private global investment firm, in 1994 and currently serves as President. Fir Tree focuses primarily on publicly traded securities and pursues an opportunistic, value oriented approach to investing. Fir Tree’s core investment funds include: Fir Tree Value Fund, which focuses on both equity and credit strategies, Fir Tree Capital Opportunity, which focuses on credit strategies, and Fir Tree Mortgage Opportunity, which focuses on a variety of mortgage strategies. Prior to forming Fir Tree, Jeffrey worked in the private equity industry.

Jeffrey has chaired and served as a board member of numerous public and private companies. Through the Fir Tree Philanthropies (“FTP”), Jeffrey focuses on accelerating America’s energy independence and promoting sustainable capitalism through innovations in public policy, finance and entrepreneurship. FTP sponsors a variety of global sustainability projects and operates a Scientist in Residence program. Through FTP, Jeffrey organized the country’s first major bi-partisan symposium focused on eliminating foreign oil dependence and most recently hosted the “100 Day” planning retreat for President Obama’s most senior energy and environment advisors.

Jeffrey received a J.D.-M.B.A. from New York University School of Law, and a B.A. in economics, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Tulane University; he also received a General Course Certificate from the London School of Economics and completed postgraduate work at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The dean’s roundtables are open to 18 interested NYU School of Law J.D. and graduate students. In order to achieve a representational mix of students, we will designate a proportionate number of seats to J.D. students and graduate students, respectively, to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The roundtables will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Snow Dining Room, on the fourth floor of Vanderbilt Hall. Lunch will be served. If you would like to attend a roundtable, please sign up in advance by calling Penelope Fernandes at (212) 998-6003 or by emailing her at penelope.fernandes@nyu.edu. Please indicate whether you are a J.D. or graduate student, and whether you have any dietary restrictions.

Come learn about speaking out in the classroom and its connections with institutional change. Raising issues of identity and difference—whether they be about race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, or anything else—can be difficult for professors, administrators, and students, particularly those coming from diverse backgrounds and faced with an alienating classroom environment. This Forum begins with statements from students about the personal and institutional barriers to speaking out, then turns to a panel of experts who will address strategies for speaking out.

Cosponsored by: Coalition for Legal Recruiting (CoLR), Asia Law Soceity (ALS), Asian-Pacific American Law Student Association (APALSA), Black Allied Law Students Association (BALSA), Islamic Law Student Association (ILSA), Latino Law Students Association (LaLSA), Middle East Law Students Association (MELSA), South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA), Women of Color Collective (WOCC)

Thursday, November 19, 6:00-9:00 p.m.
Wachtell Lounge, Furman Hall

Tax and International Tax LL.M. candidates are encouraged to participate in this career event! LL.M. students will be matched up one-on-one with tax practitioners for a 20 minute practice interview followed by 10 minutes of feedback. In addition to the excellent interview practice, this event provides a strong networking opportunity, both with the individual attorney with whom you are matched, and also at a brief networking reception held at the start of the event. Register in the Events Tab on CSM (https://law-nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students) AND send an email to clara.solomon@nyu.edu noting any class conflicts between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. and any specific practice area interests. To the best of our ability, we will try to match you with a practitioner from your specified practice area (though we can’t guarantee a match, depending on attorney availability). International Tax Students please note: OCS will also host a practice interview program for all international LL.M. candidates in January. International Tax students must choose one event, either the November Tax evening or the January International Evening. Unfortunately, we do not have space to accommodate International Tax students in both programs.

If you are conducting a private sector job search for Summer 2010, we ask that you log into your Mandatory Fall 2009 Recruiting Survey (”Recruiting Survey”) today and fill out Sections 1‐4. You may also include any individual comments in Section 7. Please also go back into the survey each week as you have updates to your callbacks and offers. Once you have accepted an offer for summer 2010, please return to the survey to answer question 5. Students who have not received an offer by November 15 should also log in at that time and answer question 5 and 6. The Recruiting Survey is available online through Survey Monkey using the individualized link sent via email to all 2Ls who did EIW on Friday, August 28. During this challenging job market, timely feedback regarding your job search results is critically important to the accuracy of our counseling and our ability to assist you in your ongoing job search. For this reason, OCS has asked you to complete the Recruiting Survey as you progress through the Fall 2009 recruiting season, and to update the survey with the status of your interviews, callbacks, and offers throughout the semester. All responses are kept completely confidential.

The Office of Career Services will be hosting one additional week of Fall OCI, Week 7, from November 16-20, 2009. Please continue to login to CSM for the most up-to-date list of participating employers. You can begin requesting interviews with employers this Monday, November 2. Bidding will close the following Sunday, November 8.

Important Reminders for Fall OCI:
Please remember to enter your class schedule upon bidding in order to avoid being scheduled for an interview during this time. In addition, please note that the deadline to cancel a scheduled interview is 12:00 midnight the Wednesday prior to the employer’s scheduled visit to campus. Cancellations will only be accepted due to an emergency or an extenuating circumstance after that time.

Open Sign-Up for Week 7 of Fall OCI will begin at 12:00 noon on Thursday, November 12, and will close at 12:00 noon one day prior to the employer’s interview date. Students may sign-up for any open slot with an employer, as long as they meet the employer’s degree and/or specialty requirements. Open Sign-Up is conducted in real-time through CSM and is not a lottery. To sign up for an interview via Open Sign-up, simply click on an available date and choose a time slot. *Please note: If you are already logged in to CSM prior to the opening of this module, you must LOG OUT and log back in to view all available Open Sign-up slots. The “refresh” button will not function if you logged in before 12:00 noon.

Please feel free to contact Rebecca Linden, Associate Director, Recruitment & Marketing, with any questions at rebecca.linden@nyu.edu.
