The Hague Conference on Private International Law (in The Hague, Netherlands) is once again offering a summer internship for students with grants for international internships. The Secretariat has indicated that there is only one position for summer 2012.

The Hague Conference is an inter-governmental organization established by treaty to work for the progressive unification of the rules of private international law. The Conference is responsible for numerous international treaties dealing with various fields of law; they include the Hague Evidence Convention, The Hague Service Convention, The Hague Adoption Convention, and the Hague Child Abduction Convention.

The work of summer interns has been varied. Students have worked on preparatory materials for potential new conventions: a choice of court agreement that had final negotiations in summer 2005 and a convention on child support that had a diplomatic session in summer 2006. Other projects involve the Internet, the environment, and commercial matters. Tasks also include helping prepare for special commissions that oversee the operations of existing conventions. This summer there will be a Special Commission on international child abduction and international custody jurisdiction.

The Hague has attempted to match particular student interests with their ongoing projects.

Interested applicants may pick up an application from Richard Kelsey in VH 314 or request one by e-mail (richard.kelsey@nyu.edu) Applications should include the completed application form, a résumé, unofficial transcripts with first-semester grades, and a statement of interest and experience. Applications should be returned to Mr. Kelsey in person or via e-mail (richard.kelsey@nyu.edu). Professor Silberman, who works closely with the Hague Conference, will be overseeing the selection process. For additional information, interested applicants may contact Professor Silberman directly (linda.silberman@nyu.edu) or former Hague summer interns for 2010 and 2011: Corinne Milliken (corinne.milliken@nyu.edu) and Lauren Katz (lauren.katz@nyu.edu) Applications are due by Monday, February 13. A limited number of interviews will follow and selections will be made by the end of February or early March.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is organizing the first ever South Asia Reproductive Rights Case Development Workshop, in July 2012, in Kathmandu, Nepal. This interactive workshop will bring together a select group of lawyers and international legal and human rights experts with the goal of developing strategic litigation to address barriers to safe abortion and contraception information and services in countries in South Asia.

This workshop is part of the Center’s South Asia Reproductive Justice and Accountability Initiative (SARJAI), which builds on years of work undertaken since 2005, in partnership with lawyers in India and Nepal, to develop and successfully litigate cases on behalf of women who have experienced violations of their fundamental human rights as a result of government failure to ensure access to quality maternal healthcare and safe abortion services. Building on these experiences and the lessons learned, the Center will bring together lawyers from India and Nepal with those from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka to discuss and develop new litigation strategies.

This program, available to up to ten first and second year JD students, is designed to encourage and support students interested in public interest environmental law through summer internships, mentoring by the School’s environmental and land use faculty, and exposure to leading practitioners in the field. The program supplements PILC grants by $500 (for a total of $7,000 for 2Ls and $5,000 for 1Ls) for summer internships working in environmental and land use law with environmental groups, government agencies, and other public interest law practice institutions in the United States or abroad.

Recipients will be required to attend three special events with the School’s environmental and land use law faculty and distinguished public interest environmental law practitioners during the fall semester following their internship. These events will give students an opportunity to meet leading environmental law practitioners, and to engage with the School’s environmental and land use law faculty and students with similar interests.

How to Apply

If you are interested in the program, you must submit an application for a Guarini Center for Environmental and Land Use Law Fellowship by midnight February 1. To be eligible for a Guarini Fellowship, you also must have completed the Public Interest Summer Internship Funding registration that was due on December 1. Selections will be made by a faculty committee consisting of Professors Vicki Been, Richard Stewart, and Katrina Wyman. To apply, please submit a resume, unofficial transcript, and statement of interest in public interest environmental and land use practice including information about placements secured or contemplated to Professor Stewart’s assistant, Basilio Valdehuesa at Valdehuesa@exchange.law.nyu.edu. Students are responsible for finding their own placements, but the faculty listed above will be happy to provide suggestions and other help.

The Frank J. Guarini Leaders in Government Service Institute at NYU School of Law is accepting applications for its second ever class of scholars drawn from J.D. candidates currently in their second year of law school.

We are excited to accept applications for the Frank J. Guarini Leaders in Government Service Institute. Created by former U.S. Representative Frank J. Guarini ’50 (LL.M. ’55), the Institute provides scholarship opportunities and professional training for students who aspire to leadership roles in government (local, state, federal, international) or in think tank or advocacy organizations that shape public policy. The Institute capitalizes on NYU School of Law’s historic strengths in the area of public service by providing financial support, mentorship, and a government-focused curriculum to prepare NYU students for careers as leaders in government.

The Scholarship Program: Under the direction of Professor Samuel Rascoff, scholars gain access to a range of thought leaders and practitioners through a semester-long one-credit workshop curated by the Institute. Guarini Scholars are required to devote their substantial paper in their final year of law school to the exploration of a topic in public policy. Guarini Scholars design an academic program tailored to their interests and receive individualized counseling and connections to faculty, alumni and experts in their areas of interest.

Nine scholars will be selected. Each will receive an award of $7,500.

The Black, Latino, Asian-Pacific American Law Alumni Association (BLAPA) Public Service Scholarship was created in 1994 to promote the practice of law in the public sector by graduates of New York University School of Law. BLAPA alumni have contributed funds to create this scholarship to reduce the law school debt burden of second year students who are members of APALSA, BALSA, LaLSA, MELSA or SALSA. In October 2011, the scholarship was renamed the Derrick A. Bell, Jr. Scholarship for Public Service to celebrate Professor Bell and his commitment to legal education, critical thought, and community empowerment.

In 2012, BLAPA plans to award two $10,000 scholarships to students who has proven their dedication to public service, who plan to pursue careers in public interest law, and who demonstrate a commitment to social justice in the best tradition of Professor Bell. The award will be directly applied to the recipients’ financial aid package for the 2012-13 academic year. The scholarship recipient will be honored at the Annual BLAPA Spring Dinner on Friday, March 30, 2012 at Capitale, located at 130 Bowery Street, New York, NY.

Applications are available by going to BLAPA’s website: www.law.nyu.edu/alumni/alumniassociations/blapa/publicservicescholarship/index.htm

Completed applications should be submitted to the Office of Development and Alumni Relations on the 2nd floor of D’Agostino Hall, located at 110 West 3rd Street, and are due no later than Friday, February 10, 2012.
