Awards and Nominations

Voting is currently taking place for the Broadcasting Press Guild's 36th Annual Award Ceremony. The Doctor Who franchise has been nominated for three awards this year, with David Tennant nominated for Best Actor (Doctor Who/Hamlet), Eve Myles nominated for Best Actress (Torchwood/Framed), and finally Russell T Davies nominated for Best Writer (Doctor Who/Torchwood). The winners are chosen by members of the Guild, and takes place between the 11th and 18th February.

The Television and Radio Industries Club hold their annual TRIC Awards on 9th March at the Grosvenor House, London; Doctor Who has been nominated in the "TV Drama Programme" category, up against Doc Martin and Shameless. Winners are chosen by members of the industry.

The revived series of Doctor Who has yet to win an award from either organisation, though actress Billie Piper won the "New TV Talent" category at TRIC's 2006 ceremony.

New assistant Karen Gillan has been nominated for "Best New Scottish Actor/Actress" at the second Scottish Variety Awards, taking place at the Glasgow Crowne Plaze Hotel on 26th March.

The SFX Weekender convention took place over the weekend, and Doctor Who fared well in the various sci-fi categories: Best Actor went to David Tennant, Best Actress to Eve Myles, Best Television Episode was won by Torchwood: Children of Earth Day Five, and Best Collectable to the Journal of Impossible Things. In the SFX Choice Awards, new head writer Steven Moffat was the "Hope for the Future", whilst character Ianto Jones was chosen as "Cult Hero". Russell T. Davies was present to accept the actor and episode awards, and you can read his speeches on the SFX website. The full awards will feature in a forthcoming issue of SFX Magazine.

As we reported in a @Podshock tweet over the last weekend, writer Neil Gaiman has finally confirmed his involvement in writing an upcoming story for Doctor Who. In a message sent to the SFX Weekender convention this past weekend accepting being awarded 'Best Comic' at the SFX Awards, he acknowledge that he is writing an episode for next year's series of Doctor Who (Series 32, Matt Smith's series 2).

There has been much talk and speculation about him writing for the series, but up until now, it hadn't been confirmed.

Carey Mulligan who played Sally Sparrow in the 2007, Stephen Moffat, story Blink, has been nominated in the 2010 Academy Awards as Best Actress in a Leading Role. She earns the nomination for An Education in which she played Jenny, an English schoolgirl who is seduced by the charms of an older man.

Paul Magrs is to take part in the Bristol celebration of the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people. Magrs has written several Doctor Who Novels for BBC Books as well as plays for Big Finish and the recently released Tom Baker play, Hornet's Nest, for BBC Audio. His other work includes gritty teen fiction such as Strange Boy, a coming of age novel about a boy discovering and learning to accept his sexuality. He will take part in a free creative writing session to be held at Bristol Central Library on February 25 from 2pm to 4pm followed by a talk at Bedminster Library from 7.30pm to 9pm.

Dan Walker, an artist on the 2005 and 2010 series of Doctor Who, will be showing off some concept work at Teesside University's Animex International Festival in Middlesbrough, England. The event runs until the 12th February.

Nicholas Briggs, who provides the voices for several Doctor Who monsters, most notably the Daleks and the Cybermen is is presenting The 7th Dimension on BBC Radio 7. He provides the continuity for the station’s slot dedicated to science-fiction, fantasy, and horror.

Bumper Year for Dark Shadows

2010 sees the expansion of Big Finish’s Dark Shadows range, with an unprecedented nine releases planned across the year.

Kingdom of the Dead, the new four-CD full cast mini-series is now midway through recording, and will be available from July. Studio sessions have already taken place in New York, Los Angeles and London, with further recording scheduled during February and March.

The new story features returning stars David Selby (Quentin), Lara Parker (Angelique), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie) and John Karlen (Willie), joined by a host of new voices, including Lysette Anthony (1991 Angelique) and Alec Newman (2004 Barnabas). Original series actors Nancy Barrett (Carolyn) and Marie Wallace (Eve) have recorded guest appearances for the last episode and other actors will be announced shortly.

Kingdom of the Dead is written by Stuart Manning and Eric Wallace and is directed by Darren Gross. “From the beginning, we were keen to up the emotional stakes and story pacing,” says Eric. “The goal was to make this feel less like a play and more like a bona fide soap opera. Without giving anything away, fans are going to get some major surprises in Kingdom of the Dead!”

Work is also underway on the new series of Dark Shadows dramatic readings, which have just resumed with the release of Final Judgement. Four more CDs are due out in the coming months, featuring classic characters in all-new stories.

The next dramatic reading, Blood Dance, is now due out in April. This recording was delayed by unavoidable cast commitments, but is scheduled to go into studio later this month, starring David Selby alongside original series actor Lisa Richards (Sabrina Stuart), making her Big Finish debut.

Blood Dance is written by returning author Stephen Mark Rainey, and features Quentin in prohibition-era Chicago, plunged into a supernatural mystery at the shady Arcadia Club. “We learn about a chapter of Quentin’s life never revealed in the show itself,” says Rainey. “There’s new insight into the people, places, and events that shaped one of the show’s most endearing characters.”

Other upcoming dramatic readings include The Doll House by Torchwood and Being Human novelist James Goss, and London’s Burning by Joseph Lidster, writer for Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The Doll House explores the life of Quentin’s doomed wife Jenny, as played by Marie Wallace who has been involved in the story’s development. “What you saw on screen was just a fraction of Jenny’s story,” says Goss. “Hunted by her own family, betrayed by her lover, driven mad by his relatives and her children stolen from her by her only friend. It's brilliant to be able to write about those mysteries.”

London’s Burning features Quentin arriving in London at the turn of the century, where he uncovers the truth behind a mysterious spate of spontaneous human combustions, with the relative of an old friend in tow. “I discovered the mad world of Dark Shadows just over a year ago and was immediately hooked by its combination of strong characters and epic storylines,” says Lidster. “What other show would send its main character – a vampire! – back in time and tell a whole new set of storylines featuring the same actors playing different characters? It’s been a real thrill to write the further adventures of Quentin Collins and, especially, being able to explore the family of Cockney showgirl Miss Pansy Faye!”

“It’s such a great run of stories,” says series producer Stuart Manning. “With new authors and actors joining us all the time, we’re hope to make 2010 a mad, truly thrilling ride for listeners.”

This weekend, The Times ran a glowing review of Rob Shearman's book, Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical. It reads:

"It’s probably wrong to say that realism is dead, but the most interesting short stories produced today are to be found in genre fiction – or at least on the edges of fantasy, science fiction and horror. Robert Shearman’s World Fantasy Award-winning first collection was Tiny Deaths; in his second, Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical, he has taken on the other great subject of art.

Normally, yes. But as you can see this main page has been a wee bit neglected of late. There's been a spate of SJA related news, and we missed it. We messed up - so to make up for that fact, and to clear our consciences, here's a quick update on all the news we failed to bring you the first time around:

1: Anjli Mohindra - Law & Order: UK

Anjli appears on tomorrow night's episode of ITV1's Law & Order: UK (a spin-off from NBC's popular and long running Law & Order franchise). She guest stars as Sophie Martin, in an episode called 'Love & Loss'.

The official synopsis reads (taken from RadioTimes.com):

A young woman vomits blood on the concourse of a London railway station and later dies in hospital. It turns out she was a drug mule who had just returned from Thailand, her stomach packed with bursting, heroin-filled condoms. Detectives Brooks and Devlin discover that she was a popular, hard-working girl from a good family, who are naturally stunned. But a little digging uncovers unpleasant details about her romantic life...

Freema Agyeman also stars.

(Interesting story from The Writer's Tale: The Final Chapter - Freema was set to guest star as Martha Jones in Enemy of the Bane, but couldn't commit because she won a starring role on L&O:UK, hence the reason why we had a visit by Nicholas Courtney as Lethbridge-Stewart instead.)

2: SFX Weekender

Lis Sladen was a guest at SFX Magazine's very own convention - the SFX Weekender, no less - on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th February. The event took place at Camber Sands holiday camp (it's where all the cool kids are heading this summer for their holidays...) in East Sussex.

Tom Baker was there, also, so it was somewhat of a mini-reunion for the two stars!

Following that comes the GallifreyOne convention between the 26th-28th February. It's Tommy Knight's first North American appearence, and he'll be joined for the event by a string of well known Doctor Who and SJA faces, including director Graeme Harper, Judoon/Dalek voice artist Nick Briggs, script editor Gary Russell and head writer Phil Ford!

Should be quite an amazing weekend (I'll still be hungover, mind...)!

4: Doctor Who @ the BBC: The Legend Reborn

Lis Sladen narrates this collection of clips and interviews taken from 2005 onwards, with regards to the production of NuWho. Check back here for a review of the discs, courtesy of Nabu, shortly - but know that you can pick the CD up (or download it) later this month.

5: DVD News

January saw the release of 'Peladon Tales' - a twin pack DVD set, consisting of two well remembered Jon Pertwee Doctor Who adventures. Alongside 1972's The Curse of Peladon there's its 1974 sequel, The Monster of Peladon, which stars Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith (in her first year on the series).

Amazon has it at the £18 mark, currently.

Next up, The Masque of Mandragora - which is released for the first time on DVD tommorrow!

As it stands, there are still 7 unreleased Sarah Jane Smith classic Doctor Who adventures on DVD:

+ Invasion of the Dinosaurs (episode 1 of which is thought to have been recoloured)
+ Death to the Daleks
+ Planet of the Spiders (rumoured for later in 2010)
+ Revenge of the Cybermen
+ Terror of the Zygons
+ The Android Invasion
+ The Seeds of Doom

It's now been confirmed that we won't see the release of The Sarah Jane Adventures: Series Three until later this year (October/November). Bad news for anybody hoping to see it on Blu-Ray; I'm hearing that BBC DVD have no plans to release it in this format.

Worse still, the David Tennant DVD commentary that was on the cards for the set (over The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, of course) has been cancelled. No reason given. The set will essentially be a vanilla release, void of any content bar the episodes themselves, a handful of trailers and extracts from a couple of SJA audiobooks.
