THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY IS HAVING A FLEA MARKET, CRAFTS AND YARD SALE on Saturday, June 1st, from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the old Smithburg Grade School. There will also be concessions and baked goods for sale. Come see what crafts your local vendors are selling and see what bargains you can find. There will also be a non-perishable food donation box for the Food Pantry. All proceeds from the table rentals and concessions will go towards the restoration of the Old Hickory Ridge School located at Snowbird Park.

No Drop in Teens' Use of Smokeless Tobacco

(HealthDay News) -- About one in every 20 U.S. teens has used "smokeless" tobacco products such as chew or snuff, and that rate hasn't budged since 2000, a new report finds.

Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health compared data from the 2000 and 2011 U.S. National Youth Tobacco Survey. The 2000 survey included nearly 36,000 students at 324 middle and high schools, while the 2011 survey included nearly 19,000 students at 178 middle and high schools.

The students were asked if they had used smokeless tobacco products such as snuff, chewing or dipping tobacco for one or more days within the past 30 days.

EQT Corp. will use the aerial application of herbicides to help maintain the rights-of-way (ROW) for some of its gas transmission and gathering lines throughout select counties in West Virginia. The program is designed to control the growth of trees, brush and other vegetation in order to provide uninterrupted, reliable natural gas service; and to allow safe, unobstructed access for crews to inspect, repair and maintain the natural gas pipelines.

The Doddridge County Farmers Market will be holding its first meeting of the season on June 3rd at 6:00 pm at the Doddridge County Extension Office. At this meeting you can sign up to become a vendor and get trained in the West Virginia Farmers Market Nutrition Program to accept WIC and Senior Vouchers. We will also be discussing the move of the market to Friday afternoons and evening to attract more customers. This move will catch people getting off work and getting ready to get food for the weekend.

Teen to raise funds for children’s hospital

MINERAL WELLS - A local teen is raising money through her church to help sick children at West Virginia University Children's Hospital.

Parkersburg South High School junior Rebecca Rhodes, 16, has organized a gospel sing that will be held at 7 p.m. today at Mineral Wells Baptist Church. The sing will be held for a love offering and proceeds from the event will go to the children's hospital in Morgantown.

Ilene Evans to portray Harriet Tubman at Prickett's Fort May 20th

Ilene Evans will portray Harriet Tubman (1820-1913), leader of the Underground Railroad, at Prickett’s Fort State Park on Sunday, May 20 at 2 pm. The program will take place in the park’s Visitor Center and is free and open to all.

Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland but escaped through the Underground Railroad in 1849. She became the most famous leader of that network, aiding slaves in their escape to free states and Canada. When the Civil War erupted her underground experiences and knowledge of covert operations made her an invaluable resource to Federal officers.

In rural communities in WV, we have many small farms that rely on Farmers Markets to sell their produce for supplemental income. And we also have “Mountain State Naturals” – which is a “WV Beef Farmers’ Cooperative” that markets their beef as raised without using growth hormones.

On their website: “Our cattle are raised in open fields with continual access to pasture. They are never fed growth hormones of any kind and have never been given antibiotics. Our young West Virginia beef are raised to about 1100 pounds and receive corn supplements as they reach finished weight. Because our West Virginia beef are primarily fed grass, they are higher in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are shown to reduce or prevent cardiac disease.”

The vast wealth of the Marcellus shale is something beyond our state’s collective experience and requires new thinking. Most importantly, it means that our state needs to create and use our new wealth without making the same mistakes we made with coal.

The natural gas in the “active” Marcellus shale areas is worth $80,000 — an acre — according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That is assuming a market price of $3 per MCF and the current market is above $4 per MCF. In so called “wet gas” areas the ethane and other liquid hydrocarbons that come with the gas are worth just as much as the gas. So that means that the gas in the land that produces Marcellus shale gas is worth at least $80,000 — and up to $160,000 — an acre. One well pad with six of the new horizontal wells draining 640 acres is therefore worth $51 million to $102 million to the driller. (Contrast that with the conventional vertical wells that we are used to here in West Virginia. A conventional gas well to the Big Injun Sandstone produces gas worth $15,000 an acre, and the Berea Sandstone is worth $9,000 an acre.)

“Homespun Country” Celebrated by CEOS

The Weston Area Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) held their annual meeting at the Doddridge Park on May 9, hosted by Doddridge CEOS members. The event saw the largest number of attendees of any held to date for the Weston Area, i.e., over 200 attendees of which 68 were from Doddridge. The Weston Area CEOS is comprised of clubs from Barbour, Braxton, Doddridge, Gilmer, Lewis, Pocahontas, Tucker, Upshur, and Webster Counties.
