We've come to terms wherein the client prefers a visually orgasmic web site by a graphics designer over my fast and efficient interface design and she's going to drop me anyway. I was told, <em>"Mas maganda ang gawa ni</em> [name of the graphics designer] <em>kesa'yo. Ito na lang seguro ang kukuhanin ko. </em>I think he's better than you." I think he's better than you.).</p> <p>Backgrounder:<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I'm an old-school web designer who started working on static web sites since 1996. I am proficient in HTML and Javascript and adept in tinkering source codes via text editors (i.e. Notepad). Depending on the needs of the client, the web sites I created for my client are usually "automated" which simply means it is almost comparable to high-end database driven web sites where web site owners can post entries or articles by themselves (e.g. <a href="http://www.wfwp.asia/" target="_blank">http://www.wfwp-asia.blogspot.tw/</a>). All these without the high costs of maintaining a database-driven web sites.<br />&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Technology advances for the better and I was left behind with a very awkward know-how of HTML5, DHTML, XHTML, XML, SGML, and any other modern type of markup language for web browser display. Since then, I no longer hand-code web design from scratch but rely heavily on free or premium web templates readily available across the web. Interface designer and graphics designer are two different professions. This is why to compare me with a graphics designer is simply not right. As a general rule, these are completely two different discipline in the web design industry that complement with each other - not compete.</p> <p>There are also instance that interface designer and graphics designer cannot work along with each other. It's not because of competition but more on compatability issues. One time, I was maintaining a <a href="http://www.ilhwa.com.ph" target="_blank"rel="nofollow">particular web site</a> operating on Blogger platform. Posting and updating with entries were as easy as a breeze. Yet, while the domain is country-level, still it didn't incurred much expenditures as even web hosting is being provided by Google (or more appropriately Blogspot) for free. The owner commissioned a friend graphics designer to "redesign" the site. The plan included getting a paid web hosting service, flashy static web pages, and the tedious FTP jobs. I decommissioned myself from that website because of difference in ideas on how to implement user-friendliness environment for both web site visitors and web site administrators. Fast forward today, I was tasked to update the web site and there lies the problem. The redesigned web site being on static web pages became too difficult to maintain. There was never a problem if only the graphics designer could design an XML-based web template. Blogger platform is XML-based and had XML-based web template was implemented, there was no need to practically overhaul the whole site.</p><p> Nothing is wrong with the graphics designer. He is a very very good designer and talented at that and in fact, an experienced graphics designer working in some prestigious graphics designing company in the country. The only thing is that he's not designing XML-based template.</p> <blockquote> &#8220;Interface design is when one is designing something that will be used by humans. I was always stranded on my way home since Monday, August 6. When the flood subsided early in the morning in August 7, I was able to drive a car and went home to supposedly secure my things out, thus I was able to capture a few photos posted <a href="http://travelogue.digitalrebel.ws/2012/08/deja-vu.html" target="_blank">in this post</a>. But the rain continued to dump more water and water level risen up again in the night time that got me stranded again. Jeepneys plying the Crossing-Antipolo route are gone. I am probably one of those people stranded while this photo was taken. Some still refer it as "southwest monsoon" or simply "monsoon rain." Really it didn't have a name but it is the same Ondoy type of water dumping albeit in a slightly slower pace. For someone like me who had the <a href="http://travelogue.digitalrebel.ws/2009/10/prayer.html" target="_blank">traumatic experience with flood caused by typhoon Ondoy</a>, it's Ondoy for me the way I see it. Ondoy dumped 341 mm of rains, more than a month's worth, in just six hours, submerging nearly 80 percent of Metro Manila and adjacent areas.</p> <p>From 8 a.m. Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration recorded 323.4 millimeters of rainfall, most of this falling 3-8 p.m. Monday, when 91.6 mm of rains were dumped in just five hours. It's more than half a month’s average of rain on Metro Manila over the last 24 hours. Danilo Suarez, titled “An urgent resolution calling for an investigation in aid of legislation by the appropriate committee of the House of Representatives regarding the effect of the cancellation of the Post Ondoy and Pepeng short term infrastructure rehabilitation projects (POPSTRIP) on the flood control program of the government.”<br /><br /> The resolution noted that “months before the onset of the rainy season, the rpesent administration cancelled several flood control projects”<br /><br /> Citing a Department of Public Works and Highways press release dated July 28, 2010, Suarez said DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson cancelled 19 approved negotiated projects worth P934.1 million under the POPSTRIP. The 19 are part of the 139 projects or 42 contract packages funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency loan for the urgent rehabilitation of flood control facilities worth P1.9 billion.<br /><br /> Suarez noted that the cancelled projects are located in areas recently flooded by recent typhoons. Our baby Pam who was then 7-month old woke up so early too. As originally planned, we trod the trail behind Tito Tom's house leading to the sea. The sound of the surf feels so good. The sea breeze is so fresh. Even at a young age, our baby already enjoyed herself observing the movements of the water. Tito Tom's wife and daughters prepared the food that we can eat while watching the surfing event. Though the surfing event is just a walking distance away via the seashore, Tito Tom opted to transport us via his van and took the highway route instead. I didn't bring any spare as I was using a 4GB compact flash card. I stopped taking photos right there and just enjoy myself looking at the sceneries with my naked eyes. Later in the evening, Tito Tom would give me a 2GB micro SD card so I could switch storage media and use the same CF card the following day.</p> <h2>La Union Sunset</h2> <p>The adventure didn't end up there as soon as we left the surfing event to go home. While there were more numbers for the event in the night time, we decided to call it finished and just enjoy the sunset from Tito Tom's abode. Tito Tom's veranda offers a great vantage point with an unobstructed view of watching the sun to settle down into the darkness of which is the China Sea. It is one of the natural occurencies you'll only find amazing and ponder about when you're comfortably seated on a rocking chair at Tito Tom's veranda.</p> <p><a rel="lightbox[la_union_escapade_2010]" <h2>My Blogroll is no longer working and I lost link to my friend's blog</h2> <p>I'd been using <strong>blogrolling.com</strong>'s link service and enjoyed the free service somehow for quite a few years. Then, after six years, six months, and five days of enjoying the service, blogrolling.com shut down the service without a deliberate notice aside from the notification they've posted in their blog. I was caught off-guard and now my links are nowhere to be found. On October 6, 2010 Blogrolling announced they would cease operation on November 1, 2010 but didn't offer an export option to extract the links. A tedious copy and paste must be done to get the links of which, unfortunately, I didn't have that much time to do it.
