What is including in this dofollow blog list that is not in others:

• Live links (it’s so annoying when the you have to copy and past).
• Descriptions of each site listed (because why would you go comment on a golf site to get a link to a vegetable garden – remember relevancy is highly important in link building).
• Whether sites allow keywords (if not noted, use a real name or psuedonym, or your comment may not be approved).

What some dofollow blog lists miss when researching blogs as dofollow:

• Sites that link back to the permalink to the comment itself instead of the commenter’s website.
• Sites that link to a Disqus, IntenseDebate, or other profile instead of the commenter’s website.
• Sites that require a lot of comments before links become dofollow (not 3 or 4, but some are 20+).
• Sites that never approve comments (lots of post with no comments is a clue).
• Sites that are up for sale (comments will probably go away).
• Sites with paginated comments (older comments are no longer cached).
• Site hasn’t been updated in years, comments are closed or not being approved.

Also, for those that think dofollow blog lists are wrong because they invite more spamming, please note:

• If anyone would like their blog removed from the list, just contact me.
• I wouldn’t list your site if I didn’t want my own sites to be listed, and mine is in here too!
• Lists like these build backlinks to your site (dofollow ones, not nofollow ones like other sites do).
• While you may get more spammers (see how to defend your site against spam), you will also get a lot more traffic and great comments in exchange for a link to someone’s website.

And one last note. Please, please remember that spamming blogs for links is a big no no. If you abuse the system by posting bad comments to get links, you will end up:

• Not having your comment approved, which just makes it a waste of time.
• Getting listed on the Akismet blacklist and rarely get your comments approved on WordPress blogs.
• Giving dofollow blog owners reason to switch their sites to nofollow, ruining it for everyone, including yourself.

1. There are important social networking sites that are nofollow.

Think about the most popular social networks – Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Myspace, and so on. While all of these networks are nofollow, they do provide a lot of other benefits, including making social connections and building an online presence and reputation.

2. There are high traffic generating social bookmarking networks that are nofollow.

StumbleUpon is the main social bookmarking network that comes to mind in terms of nofollow networks that generate a lot of traffic when used properly, and should not be ignored.

3. There are great blogs in every niche that are nofollow.

Most of the biggest blogs in every niche are probably nofollow. Getting a valuable comment in first on a high traffic blog might give you greater exposure to others interested in the same topics that you write about.

4. Link building should look natural.

For those just interested in the dofollow movement for link building, remember that search engines like natural link building. Natural links can be both dofollow and nofollow – having a nice mixture can be beneficial in a successful link building campaign.

Your Nofollow Campaign

While I’m sure a lot of readers of this site focus on dofollow, are there any other reasons you can think of to add some nofollow to your list as well?

1. Your site is not a blog.

To be in the dofollow blog directory, your site must be a blog where you post regular articles that people can comment on. If I can’t find the link to your blog from the URL you sent me, then potential readers and commenters will not be able to find it either, which defeats the purpose of having the listing in the directory. If your submission is an article directory, social bookmarking site, social networking, or forum, simply state so in the description and you will be added to the appropriate listing.

2. Your site is not dofollow.

The whole purpose of this directory is to list only dofollow sites. If your blog has some special conditions (such as you must make 3 comments before your link is dofollow) please state this in the description. To check to see if your blog is dofollow, you can use the Firefox NoDoFollow extension, or you can right click on a blog post with comments, click on Page Source, and make sure there is not a rel=”nofollow” in the HTML to commenters’ links. If you have a nofollow WordPress or Blogger/Blogspot site, learn how to make your blog dofollow and then submit your site again.

Also, keep in mind that there is a form to report bad links, so you are not likely to get away with just changing the site to dofollow temporarily to get listed – if your site is reported as a nofollow later down the road, it will be removed accordingly.

3. Your blog does not link to commenters’ websites.

Some blog comment systems only link to profiles on the blog site, Google profiles, Blogger profiles, etc. Your blog must allow direct links to the commenter’s website in order to be added to the directory.

4. Your site’s content is questionable.

I’m sorry, but at this time, I am not linking to any site with adult or other questionable content.

5. Your blog (and submission form) is not in English.

I’m ok with creating a section for blogs in other languages, but I have to be able to at least understand what the blog is about in the submission form so I can add it to the right subject (and make sure it is not violating reason #4).

Additional Notes on Approval

Please realize that this is a one-person show, so sometimes I get a little behind in approving submissions to the directory. If you don’t see your listing, feel free to email me and I will let you know if there was a problem with your submission, or if I’m just running a bit slow.

1. Fill Out Your Profile

One of the first signs of a hit and run forum spammer is a user without a profile. So don’t just fill out your link – give your profile some personal touches like filling in your location, hobbies, bio, and adding a photo / avatar.

2. Follow the Rules

Get familiar with the rules of the forum. Some forums allow things that others don’t, like a certain amount of posts before adding links and so on. Also, browse through some of the longer threads – there you will see how the majority of the forum operates, and you will get a better idea of what is and is not allowed.

3. Read the Thread

I don’t mean just the original post, but read some of the responses as well. It’s not always possible, as some threads have been around longer and have pages and pages of replies. But for shorter threads, read the entire thread, and when you reply, try to include quotes of previous responses. This shows that you aren’t just taking two seconds to glance over everything and get your signature link in just anywhere.

4. Get Personal

One of the fun things about forums is that not all of the chat is strictly about the main topic. Most forums have a off topic section where you can speak your peace about anything. This a great way to show you are a real person, and not just some drive by spammer.

5. Visit Often

Another sign of a spammer is a one time visitor who hits up a lot of threads and never returns. Try to create a system so that you know you have to visit particular forums often, so you can respond to anyone who has replied to one of your posts in a timely manner.

6. Defend Yourself

Sometimes, even if you follow all of the rules, you will still be called out as a spammer, as some forum members are there just to chat, and they assume anyone with a link in their signature is just there to spam and run. If possible, point out that the forum allows signatures with links, there is no specific rule saying that your link is violating the terms, and that you are posting relevant responses in the forum. Defend, defend, and defend your position, and keep continuing to post good responses in the forum. Eventually people will see your value and you will become a part of the community.
