Ferrets are innocent harmless creatures. These tiny domestic animals are fluffy cuddly animals that are very mischievous, playful and harmless. They are perfect house pets for children and almost every family member will enjoy these tiny fur balls. If you buy a baby ferret then you must ensure that it is 6 weeks old or older. These animals must stay with their mothers for a few weeks so that she can nurture and feed them. After this period the ferret can be weaned.

Ferrets are carnivorous creatures and thus they follow a diet that is restricted to meat. If you feed them any other foods ensure that they are meat based to avoid malnutrition. Ferrets in the wild will eat animals from the forest however a domestic ferret will be satisfied with good quality kitten food.

You must ensure that your ferret has been given the distemper vaccination. The first injection must be administered when the animal is 6 or 7 weeks old, the next will be approximately 3 weeks later and the last injection must be given after a period of 3 weeks following the second injection.

An advantage of buying a ferret is that it is a cute animal that is cuddly and can be enjoyed by the entire family. On the flip side ferrets need to be descented. If this is not done it can upset the members of the family; especially the younger ones who are supposed to enjoy with the animals. Litter training a ferret can also be a difficult task; one that needs a lot of patience.

Before you bring your baby ferret home you must buy a few toys for the animal. Toys that are meant for dogs and cats or larger house pets may not be suitable as the plastic and other materials used in the toys may lead to suffocation and internal injuries.

The playfulness of the ferret is not just short term; this is a characteristic in most adult ferrets too. As long as you pay attention to your pet is will keep you entertained and keep you laughing throughout the day.

Taking care of one's family pet is obviously important to her overall healthiness and well being. Dogs have been used by people as companions, defense animals, a way to obtain food and fur, an animal of burden, hunting partner, a pair of eyes, to sniff our hazardous things and the record goes on. You possess the obligation to keep your pet fed and sheltered. A dog crate is among the simplest ways to home train a puppy and is also a perfect den for your puppy. A good insulated dog house gives warmth during winter as well as proper protection against the heat in the summertime. Our dogs ask for little but will offer a hundred fold in return. Canines will continue to work long and hard in order to please their leader even when they're spent.

Researchers, that have researched orphaned wolf-cubs, have come to the conclusion that humankind would embrace the orphaned wolf pups as well as nurse them along with their own human infants. Because humans adopted the puppies and nurtured them, the baby wolves evolved into domesticated creatures. After the adopted wolf pups bred between each other they became much more like that which we recognize as the domestic canine. The humans would probably keep the most social and least fearful wolf cubs for domestic pets. In order to have them contained close to their own dwellings, dog dens or pet residences were built.

Dating back to 4500 BC in Egypt, puppies were being trained and kept for companions of mankind. A dog crate, or insulated dog house failed to exist at that stretch of time, and it has been speculated that houses for those early dogs had been constructed of mud. They were much like the natural den the canines would have constructed for themselves within the outdoors. Insulated dog houses and dog crates in the present day are constructed with sturdy components and constructed to provide comfort in addition to protection against the weather.

Mankind recognized that in order to stop the canines from going back to the wild, he needed to make some method of housing. Over the years, we have developed many different structures to help contain our special pets. The best structure for your pet will depend on his / her size. An insulated dog house is one of the best ways to shield an outdoor canine from the dangerous heat as well as chilly seasons which exist in many parts of the world. Dog crates are a great way to replicate the canine den in our hectic environment. There are plenty of choices that you can choose from nowadays. Pick one which will best fit the needs of your pet as well as deliver your pet the comfort, safety and security that he deserves.

The main problem with puppies is that they are so irresistible that you'll find yourself walking out of the pet shop with one before you've really had a chance to think it through. Puppies tend to grow into dogs with all the accompanying expense and responsibilities that go with owning a dog. Don't panic, keeping your puppy healthy is not hard. A healthy puppy will grow into a healthy dog who will be your faithful friend for may years. Here's how to ensure a healthy puppy.

Puppy nutrition.

You may have noticed there are so many different types of puppy food available, so how can you select the best one? Spend a little time doing research in the beginning to find the best food for puppy. The ingredients should be ones that you would eat, such as meat and vegetables, and not grain fillers and by-products that make digestion hard for your puppy. Keep an eye on the water bowl at all times and keep it filled.

Puppies need lots of love. This is easy when they are small and cute but they will grow larger and some people, especially children, may lose interest. Also keep in mind that a bored puppy is a mischievous puppy who can get himself into trouble. create quality time with your pup and always provide enough toys to keep him occupied.

Puppies require exercise that is physical, like playing with other puppies and running around, and exercise that is mental such as hide and seek and fetching a ball. Playing games with your pup provides him (and you!) the exercise he needs. Play ball with your pup, training him to fetch and drop, guess who'll get tired first! Walking your puppy not only provides exercise, but also teaches him to walk, stop and sit on command.

Take care of your puppy's teeth by brushing them and/or giving them safe, hard bones to gnaw. Allow them to get used to getting their nails clipped, their teeth brushed, and their coats brushed while they are still little. You'll thank yourself later!

Your puppy will need to go to the vet for his vaccinations and checkups. Find a good vet upon recommendation and take your puppy in on a pre-determined schedule. The majority of vets will send out a message to remind you when your puppy's appointment is.

You now know that owning a healthy puppy is quite easy. If you've looked into ways to maintain puppy health requirements such as safety, taking him in for vaccinations and checkups, and feeding him the best affordable food, you should have many years of happiness with your new furry friend.

Pet gates serve a multitude of needs. Probably the most important reason people look to purchase a pet gate is for containing a pet in an area where they won't do any harm to themselves or destroy what's in the room.

The first and most common question people have is whether or not the gate they want to buy is ok to use around children as well. It's a great question and the answer can help you determine which gate in fact you should buy.

When gates are designed just for pets or just to use around children the criteria are different. However, over the last 30+ years manufacturers have found that designing their gates for a multi-use situation has been the better choice. So, today most gates on the market can be used in either circumstance.

There are things to look for though to make sure the gate you buy in fact meets these requirements. Free standing gates are not child-use certified. They are made such that there are no attachments made to walls or doorways and a child under the right circumstances could topple the gate.

You need to look for gates that carry one of the following certifications. The first is known as a JPMA certified gate. This stands for "Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association". This independent organization certifies the companies that manufacture and sell JPMA registered products. They also audit them to make sure they follow the standards and procedures for their operation, test the products in an independent lab as required and submit to random testing during the year.

The second certification a gate may have is the ASTM stamp. (ASTM F1004-07) ASTM International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) is the organization in conjunction with the JPMA and manufacturers that develop and implement the standards. So if the gate has either certification they may be used around children.

As tempting as it may be, even using some of the old gates you may have around from earlier years from your Mom and Dad might not be the way to go. It doesn't matter if you're using it for a pet or a child. The old finishes and designs can cause more harm than good.

Back in the day, the old accordion type gate was about the only type gate any of us used. But that style, materials they used to make it and whether or not it's sturdy enough really need to be taken into account. Its not that safety wasn't important back then, but it was the best we had using the information we knew.

The old gates also don't have good latching and locking mechanisms to keep the children safe and secure. I don't think pinch points were ever a concern and certainly they had limited stability. They are also known to cause both pets and children to get caught in the "v" and several cases of strangulation have been reported.

So make an educated purchase by reading and understanding all that the industry has to offer today. There are over a dozen styles to choose from. Gates can be used for both pets and children and nowadays look great. So select a style and location and you'll be on your way. Good Luck.

Maintenance:

If you have an external biological filter on your pond, let it continue to run until there is the chance that the outlet water flow might freeze. If you shut the filter down, let the water drain from it either via siphon effect or from the drain plug. Do not clean it other than to remove any dead plant life, leaves etc. An in-pond filter should be removed for winter. You can leave your pump (if non-oil filled) in the pond so long as it is well under the point to where the ice will form. Remove as much debris as you can from the pond. Net out dead plant material, leaves, waste, sludge etc., but a deep cleaning is not necessary. Try not to stir up the water too much. You can do a partial water change if you want, but no more than a quarter inch, and never after the fish have begun their hibernation. During the winter check on your pond often to make sure all is going well. If the pond has completely frozen over NEVER break through by pounding on it, as this may aggitate the fish, and may harm your pond liner. Do not panic, remember if an Aerator/Circulator Decontaminator unit is being used, it's still working bringing in oxygen and absorbing toxicants. Now would be the time to plug in the deicer, but just until the ice opens. Another quick trick you can do, is too pour some hot water until the hole opens again.

Fish:

You can help your pond fish survive winter by doing the following: Add vitamins and mineral supplements to their diet to help them build up their immune systems and add the needed stored fat to get through the hibernation cycle. Once the water temperature drops to 55 degrees or so, only feed them when they are actively up and roaming around. If they are hanging around at the bottom of the pond, do not feed. Only feed them what they will eat in a few minutes (5 minutes or less) and remove as much of the uneaten food as possible. When the water temperature is below 45 degrees, do not feed at all. Even on warm days where the nighttime water temperature will return to 45 degrees, refrain from feeding.

Ammonia is the number one fish killer. During the winter months, your fish will not die from the cold, but could actually succumb to suffocation do to the water becoming too toxic. Ammonia builds up at the bottom of the pond, which is the very place your fish want to spend their winter, while carbon dioxide builds up near the surface under the ice. A pond deicer (heater) may helps some with the carbon dioxide problem, but does nothing to prevent ammonia build up. Ammonia forms because of several main reasons. Ammonia is part of the natural biological process, and occurs when organic matter, like dead plant life, fish waste and excess food starts to decay. The bodily functions of the fish will greatly contribute to ammonia in the pond. Visible fish waste is only part of the problem. Much of the waste will come from the fishes gill function. As the fish breathe they give off ammonia and carbon dioxide. During the winter hibernation, most of the fishes systems slow down, but they still breathe and produce waste matter. It is very important to allow dissolved oxygen into the pond and do something to prevent the ammonia and carbon dioxide build up. A deicer (heater) can be marginally effective, but some thought should be given to an Aerator/Circulator Decontaminator Unit. Using one of these units and a deicer as a back up is the best solution. An Aerator/Circulator Decontaminator can be used year round in your pond, as it greatly enhances the overall biological process helping to prevent algae and such. But these units prove to be extremely effective in the winter season, and should be added to the pond in early Fall to provide a clean, clear and healthy environment for your fish. The explosion of the multitute of bubbles will constantly add dissolved oxygen to the depths of the pond, while helping to keep a hole open in the ice. Even if your pond froze completely over the unit would continue to work bringing a fresh supply of oxygen, while absorbing toxicants. Again a deicer (heater) will supplement this attempt to rid your pond of ammonia.

Plants:

Tropical plants generally will not make it through the winter if left in your pond. They should be removed as soon as the water temperature drops below 60 degrees or so. Depending on the variety you have, some may be used as house plants. Water hyacinth and lettuce take a lot of effort and money to keep alive all winter, so it is best to consider them annuals and just replace each spring. Your hardy plants need to be cut down to about an inch above the root stem and sink them to the lowest part of your pond. However, keep your fish in mind, as they need a place to hibernate. Give your fish top priority, as far as room at the bottom of the pond is concerned. Best time to cut the hardy plants back is long before there is a chance of frost. While removing the hardy plants to cut them back, take the time to remove any debris and string algae from the pots and stems.

So, you are thinking about raising chickens in your backyard? That's a great idea! Why? Because having your own chickens provides you with many advantages. For one, you won't have to worry about fresh eggs any longer - you'll find them right there in your backyard. This will save you a lot of money in the long run, and you will know where your breakfast eggs are coming from. That's a great feeling, I can tell you!

Furthermore, you are doing a favor to the chickens themselves. Just think about the conditions that modern egg-producing hens are raised under. That will make you shudder. Your backyard, however, will make for a lot happier and healthier chickens! To keep your chickens healthy, it is important to pick the right size of chicken coop that will give each bird enough space to live. Also the ventilation and proper positioning in your backyard are important factors to consider.

When looking at chicken coops, you have the option to either buy a coop or build your own from hen house plans. You'll be able to save a lot of money by picking out the right chicken coop plans and building it yourself (it's not that hard) or have somebody build it for you. Fact is, most commercially available, "pre-built" hen houses need to be assembled, too. And they are a lot more expensive than the coop plans plus material costs! A pre-built chicken coop can start (depending on the size) anywhere from $500 to several thousand dollars and up.

Also, you will have a lot more options to pick from if you are going with chicken coop plans. That way you can get the most out of the space available in your backyard, you can choose between portable and fixed hen houses, and you can pick a design that you really like. Nobody wants an eye-sore in their backyard - your neighbors will be a lot happier with a nice looking chicken coop than some ugly box that obstructs their view.

Scheduled preventative maintenance for your saltwater or freshwater aquarium can be made much easier by following these simple guidelines. With just a little maintenance work done every day, this will keep your fish and aquarium environment clean and healthy.

Things to be done daily:

Make sure to turn the aquarium lights on and off each day. Most aquarists find it convenient to use an automatic timer for this. If you choose not to go this route, try to turn the lights on and off at the same times each day. What you will be trying to do, is replicate a natural day/night cycle for your fish.

Take a couple of minutes each day to check your fish and invertebrates for signs of stress, disease, or death. Always be prepared to remove dead specimens immediately, and treat any sick fish accordingly.

Feed your fish and invertebrates twice a day, removing any uneaten food.

If your tank is not fully seasoned yet, conduct water tests until the water matures and the nitrogen cycle is established. Routine tests include ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. Record and track these test results carefully.

Routinely check the water temperature in your aquarium. Adjust the heater up or down as needed, unless you're using one of the preset aquarium heaters currently on the market. If you have a saltwater tank, the specific gravity or salinity, must also be checked.

If a protein skimmer is being utilized on your aquarium, empty the collection cup as needed.

The ever-attentive aquarist should also check the water level, and top off as needed.

Visually check all aquarium systems: heaters, filters, aerators, protein skimmers and such. Make sure they're all running properly and smoothly and pay special attention to intakes and siphon tubes. Make sure nothing is leaking or sucking air.

Things to be done weekly:

Remove excess algae, while keeping beneficial algae at acceptable levels and getting rid of nuisance algae.

Clean the glass, both inside and out, without the use of glass cleaners of course. Remove salt-creep deposits.

Water tests should be conducted weekly, after the water matures and the nitrogen cycle has been established. Record all of these test results and add trace elements and buffers, as needed.

Things to be done every other week:

Clean your aquarium filters as needed. All solid debris should be carefully removed. Partially change or rinse the filter media within the filter if the bio-load is particularly high, the media is extremely dirty, or the normal water flow is being restricted.

Change about 10 to 15 percent of the tank water while thoroughly vacuuming the gravel.

Things to be done monthly:

Conduct thorough filter checks to assess the filter's overall effectiveness. Replace the filter carbon and rinse the filter media and components as needed, being careful to not upset the bulk of the bioload.

If a protein skimmer is being utilized on your tank, it should be thoroughly cleaned at this time.

Thoroughly clean the outside of the fish tank, hood, aquarium stand and surrounding area, removing all salt and calcium deposits, dust, and any dirt that has accumulated.

Remove and rinse off any tank decorations or plants that suffer from excess algae growth.
