I came across this article and I thought Id share it with you all. Its about a topic that goes on everyday and more of us should think about and consider helping out....More people who rent houses are apartments should rent with people who have pets, this would keep them together and avoid the people having to get rid of their loyal companions whom they love or avoid having to pay so much pet deposit if they are lucky to find a place that accepts pets but they still have to pay an ourageous pet deposit.
Am pleased to say that after taking the initiative to advertise dogs accepted on our rental property, we have just signed up a new tenant for a year that was struggling to find somewhere as they have a dog.It means that I have to sort a fence out but we are pleased to have the place rented again with only one month dicontinuity of tenancy and glad to be able to at least help someone out with a home in this difficult times ..After this article was posted then a reply was also posted that said" Am pleased to say that after taking the initiative to advertise dogs accepted on our rental property, we have just signed up a new tenant for a year that was struggling to find somewhere as they have a dog.It means that I have to sort a fence out but we are pleased to have the place rented again with only one month dicontinuity of tenancy and glad to be able to at least help someone out with a home in this difficult times .So you see you can spread the word and in time who knows maybe their will be more places that will rent to people who own pets" Let's hope so anyway.. Northern Ireland Shamed by Treatment of Death Row Dog, Bruce

The comments coming from around the world on the desperate plight of Bruce, a dog condemned to die by the law for no other reason that the way he looks, have brought shame to the United Kindom for its continued use of breed specific legislation. As Bruce’s deadly situation has captured the attention and worry of dog lovers all around the world, it offers a sad and embarassing glimpse in to a law which has taken innocent lives ever since its inception in 1991.
The UK is currently (rightly) in uproar about the deaths of two police dogs, left to swelter in a parked car on one of the hottest days of the year. But their deaths are heavily and shamefully outnumbered by the countless corpses of dogs who have been intentionally killed by the UK Government.
If you are a British politician and you sit idly by as MILLIONS of pounds of tax payer’s money is sloshed up the wall trying to enforce a law that even the enforcers accept is literally impossible to maintain - never, ever try and claim to be an animal lover if you refuse to act and use your influence to remove breed specific legislation from the statute books NOW.
If you are a tax payer, you have a RIGHT to demand your money be well spent. The 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act has:
NOT reduced dog attacks
NOT saved lives
NOT been possible to implement
NOT been properly administered (because it can’t be)
NOT been effective in any way, shape or form
and now is NOT even attempted to be defended by the legislators responsible for it
Bruce’s life still hangs in the balance. But what’s not in question any longer is that the United Kingdom can never, ever claim to call itself a nation of animal lovers if it intends to systematically kill dogs for NO other reason that what their parents were or what they happened to be born looking like.
If you weren’t aware, two perfectly legal dog breeds can (and do) produce offspring which are deemed illegal.
For example, a Boxer x Staffordshire Bull Terrier can produce a ‘Pit Bull type’ as can any number of other combinations. And so our response to that occurence should be what? To kill the dogs?
Our dangerous dogs laws are not only ineffective, costly and downright cruel - they are a national embarassment. Just take a look….
The RSPCA, USPCA, British Government and Northern Ireland Assembly ALL continually urge the public to place appropriate value on animal welfare.
What sort of example are they setting if they kill this dog when the offer for him to live legally in Eire is on the table?
What role model is government projecting when it kills WITHOUT NEED?
PLEASE do the right and humane thing and save this poor creature who has already suffered so much when he has done nothing wrong. We only ask that he be allowed to go where it is legal for him to be and not be killed senselessly. There is absolutely no reason that this can’t happen as it would cause no one harm for him to leave. We ask you for sweet Bruce.
I am appauled at a country that shows such indifference towards animal. This dog has a place to go to live out his life free. Haven’t they tormented this animal long enough. Are the egos of the judges/Ministers in Ireland so large that it overshadows the heart.
There is no justification in killing this dog Bruce.Are you ashamed of the fact that through your ill equipped holding system and obviously ignorant and insensitive staff Bruce has suffered both mentaly and physically.Do you not want the extent of your neglect to become common knowledge IS THIS THE REASON FOR THE DESTRUCTION ORDER. As part of the UK you should adhere to common scense and parden this dog who at least has a bolt hole.
I can’t believe people still cling to the bigoted “it looks like a pit so it must be dangerous” ignorance. How would you like to be jailed because “you’re Irish so therefore you must be IRA”? Stop generalizing and let that dog go home to his family. HE DID NOTHING WRONG!
And voters, I’d take a second long, hard look at such arbitrary and uninformed officials; you need to elect someone who knows a hawk from a handsaw.
What the hell kind of country are you running over there ?Im from the United States and have always loved Ireland.Have been there many times, since I married and Irishmen. I will tell you this. I will never return until the BSL law is overturned. It is unjust and downright awful.To allow this to happen to an innocent , is outrageous.

Well that is it for me. I had a trip booked for Ireland in the Fall. I will take the loss of my non refundable ticket. As long as there are BSL laws , I will not visit. Will also advise all my friends and family to also stay away from Ireland.I can’t imagine any country that would make a poor dog suffer like Ireland has made Bruce suffer. California Dog found _lost all the way from Saudi Arabia

CARLSBAD, Calif. - A "sweetheart" of a dog now in a California shelter may be really, really far from home. His microchip says the knee-high, light tan Saluki came from Saudi Arabia.
The neutered male dog brought to a Carlsbad animal shelter last week has an implanted microchip that was sold to the U.S. Military Training Mission, headquartered in Riyadh, said Lt. Dan DeSousa of San Diego County's Animal Services Department.
The dog was found June 15 near Escondido, about 30 miles north of San Diego.
DeSousa said he believes someone in the military owns the dog and likely brought him from overseas. But they haven't been able to track down the owner, even after speaking with veterinarians who work with the U.S. military in Saudi Arabia.
"In our hearts and minds, we know this dog belongs to someone in the military. For all they've done for us, it is only fair we try to get the dog reunited," DeSousa said.
DeSousa said he doesn't know the dog's name but he wears a tag that reads "Pet Rejuvenizer." Plenty of people have said they would take him but authorities hope the real owner will come forward.
"There's a lot of unanswered questions, and dogs can't talk, so we're kind of restricted as to what information we can get out of him," DeSousa said, chuckling. "We're trying to put the word out. He is a sweetheart of a dog."

Kennel Hand Breaks Silence on What’s Happening to Dogs

The ‘Greyhound’s Voice’: A kennel hand has spoken out in sheer frustration and has published his video diaries and photographs, cataloguing the appalling level of greyhound welfare deemed acceptable by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain.

The trainer’s refusal to accept his offers of help and the indifference shown to a series of complaints he made to officials regarding breaches of Racing Rules, eventually broke his silence.

Neil Haine, 40 from North Dorset, contacted Greyt Exploitations - a greyhound protection group - after the complaints he lodged with his Area Steward, Colin Betteridge, regarding greyhounds being kennelled in their own
excrement and urine soaked beds for three days at a time, without fresh water or any form of exercise - were ignored.

Eve Blanchard, a professional trainer attached to Poole stadium, employed Mr Haine from November 2008 until his departure on May 26th, where he felt he could no longer endure the conditions suffered by the 36 greyhounds at the
kennels.

Mr Haine said “I asked Colin Betteridge to come and witness the disgusting conditions of the kennels I faced every Tuesday morning but when he arrived with a GBGB official, Noel Thompson, it was after 1pm. Colin was fully
aware I finished at 1pm and therefore knew the kennels would be clean by this time.

Regardless, I pleaded with Colin to do ’something’ but he insisted ‘kennels only need to be cleaned when deemed necessary’ - even if it meant breaking the rules”

“In an effort to try and help Mrs Blanchard reduce her kennel to a more manageable size, I spoke to a trainer Mrs Blanchard trusted, about her reluctance to re-home her retired dogs. Although it confirmed rumours, I was still shocked when the trainer told me ‘just give them sleeping tablets, 2 should do the job’ and then bury them
in her garden with the other 17 greyhounds”

Mr Haine continued “The more I tried to help, the more abusive and obstructive Mrs Blanchard became. She stopped me cleaning the kennels, voluntarily, from Saturday lunchtime until the following Tuesday morning and even stopped me from exercising the dogs, racing or retired. It was heartbreaking going into work on Tuesday mornings, seeing the filth the dogs had been locked up in all weekend. The squalor and the stench never failed to bring tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat”

“Mrs Blanchard refused to pay for the costly disposal of the old bedding and dog dirt, getting rid of it was becoming a problem and so the amount of waste had to be reduced. When I refused to just add a handful of clean bedding on top of the wet bedding, she then told me she wasn’t getting any more bedding and if I didn’t do as I was told, the dogs would have to sleep on bare boards. This was the final straw and with my wife’s support I knew we had to get help and quickly!”

In a heartfelt plea, Sue Haine concluded “You all need to stand united against this despicable treatment of these beautiful creatures. The GBGB are killing the sport by ignoring this terrible abuse. Please be a voice for the
greyhounds!!

Mrs Blanchard’s kennels were under the spotlight earlier this year when an undercover video of the kennels was posted on the internet and as a consequence the RSPCA were called in.

In January, Inspector Ken Snook, ordered a number of major structural improvements to be made. However, we spoke to Mr Snook on Monday last and he confirmed he had not been back to ensure those improvements had been carried out, preferring to phone the Greyhound Board of Great Britain and seek assurances from the very racing officials who had earlier dismissed the kennel hands concerns.

A spokesperson for Greyt Exploitations said “It is abundantly clear these greyhounds were needlessly suffering and the responsibility lay with the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, in failing to enforce an Improvement Notice issued to Mrs Blanchard last November and have since consistently failed to secure the welfare needs of these innocent dogs.

The welfare of animals will always be compromised where there is a profit to be made and we are appealing to the public to refrain from supporting or betting on Greyhound Racing until such a time as the commercial element is removed”

How to Train your puppy to Pee outside

A puppy isn't born knowing that your carpet is not an acceptable place to relieve himself. You are going to have to show it the ropes and train the puppy to hold it until it's time for a walk outside or playtime in the backyard. Here's a relatively easy way to train him that doesn't require punishment.

Step 1. Watch your puppy's behavior while relieving himself outdoors so you can detect the warning signs and intercept him when indoors.

Step 2. Stay outside as often as possible during nice weather so your puppy can develop a preference for eliminating outdoors. Help him develop a liking for surfaces like dirt and gravel by taking him outdoors to eliminate after eating, playing and sleeping, or, ideally, every 15 minutes.

Step 3. When it's time, go straight to a predesignated area and don't leave until the puppy urinates.

Step 4. Tuck your puppy into a cozy crate in your bedroom at night. Dogs are den animals and don't like to soil the area where they sleep.

Step 5. Carry the puppy outdoors when he becomes restless in the middle of the night, and wait until he's finished relieving himself.

Step 6. Supply a litter box (filled with sand or kitty litter) during the night, unless you plan on getting up every couple of hours to take him outside. If you do want to take him outside, set your alarm if you sleep too deeply to notice that your puppy has started fidgeting, and carry him outside at those times.

Step 7. Carry the puppy outside first thing in the morning so he won't soil the floors as he walks outside.

Step 8. Be consistent with training. Consult a pet behaviorist if you have problems.

Step 9. Reward your dog with puppy treats and praise every time he successfully eliminates outdoors.

What keeps anxiety and depression away, lowers blood pressure, boosts immunity, and even improves your social life? Research through nearly twenty-five years has shown that for all these, all you’ll need is a loving tail-wagging or maybe softly purring animal.
Allergy Busters and Immuno-Boosters
In the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, James E. Gern, MD, a pediatrician at University of Wisconsin-Madison, writes that more and more studies suggest that kids growing up in a home with a pet cat or dog, or on a farm and exposed to large animals will have less risk of allergies and asthma.
Gern analyzed the blood of babies immediately after birth and one year later to look for evidence of allergic reactions, immunity changes, and infections possibly caused by bacteria in their environment.
If a dog lived in the home, infants were less likely to develop pet allergies, even eczema, a common skin allergy that causes itching red patches. They also showed higher levels of some immune system chemicals. “Dogs are dirty animals, and this suggests that babies who have greater exposure to dirt and allergens have a stronger immune system,” Gern says.

Dogs ease people out of social isolation or shyness, says Nadine Kaslow, PhD, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University in Atlanta. “People ask about breed, they watch the dog’s tricks,” Kaslow says. “Sometimes the conversation stays at the ‘dog level,’ sometimes it becomes a real social interchange.” Better than the internet, pets are great for social networking and even matchmaking.

“Studies have shown that Alzheimer’s patients have fewer anxious outbursts if there is an animal in the home,” says Lynette Hart, PhD, associate professor at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. “Their caregivers also feel less burdened when there is a pet, particularly if it is a cat, which generally requires less care than a dog,” says Hart. The elderly can walk a dog or just care for a pet which, in turn provides exercise and companionship. As part of their medical screening, Midland Life Insurance Company of Columbus, Ohio, asks clients over age 75 if they have a pet — which often helps tip the scales in their favor.
Good For Hearts, Minds, and Biochemistry
AIDS patients who own pets are far less likely to suffer from depression. “The benefit is especially pronounced when people are strongly attached to their pets,” says researcher Judith Siegel, PhD.
In one study, hypertensive stockbrokers who adopted a cat or dog had lower blood pressure readings in stressful situations than people without pets. Stress puts people into a “state of dis-ease” in which chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine harm the immune system, says Blair Justice, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health and author of Who Gets Sick: How Beliefs, Moods, and Thoughts Affect Your Health.
Studies show a link between these chemicals and plaque buildup in arteries, the red flag for heart disease, says Justice. Heart attack patients who have pets survive longer than those without, according to several. Male pet owners have less sign of heart disease — lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels.
Playing with a dog can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine — nerve transmitters known to have pleasurable and calming properties. Justice, who recently hiked the Colorado Rockies with his wife and two dogs, observed: “People take drugs like heroin and cocaine to raise serotonin and dopamine, but the healthy way to do it is to pet your dog, or hug your spouse, watch sunsets, or get around something beautiful in nature.”

How to remove yourself from following a blog
The easiest way to remove yourself from following a blog is to visit the blog, and click "Settings" under the Following widget on the blog.

If the blog doesn't have a Followers widget, you can still stop following the blog. To do so, go to the "Blogs I'm Following" tab under your Reading List on your dashboard.

What does Blocking a follower do?
When you Block a follower of your blog, the user will no longer appear in the Followers Gadget on your blog and will not see your blog in their Blogger Reading List. Hollywood star may visit hero dog

I came across this article and like the owner of the dog Hoff I also wondered why the actor would want to visit the hero dog named after him? Any Comments??

Hollywood star David Hasselhoff has said he wants to visit a canine hero named after him.

Hoff, a Staffordshire bull terrier, made news when he saved his owner Nathan Williams from a burning building in Cinderford, Gloucestershire.

Writing on his blog, the 56-year-old actor, currently filming America's Got Talent in the US, said: "I am trying to get in touch with the owner.

"I would like to congratulate this heroic Hoff in person."

Mr Williams, 29, suffered burns and broken fingers in the fire at his home in the High Street.

Hoff had woken him as the fire took hold of the flat.

Firefighters said he would have died if he had stayed in the flat much longer.

Talking about Mr Hasselhoff's remarks, he said: "I would be up for it," he said. "It would be strange to see him in Cinderford.

"I can't really understand why he would want to meet me, I am just a man from Cinderford who had a fire."

Mr Hasselhoff shot to stardom in the 1980s as the star of TV series Knight Rider and later appeared for several years in Baywatch

Homemade Dog Treat Recipe "Good Dog" Cookies

Here is a doggie treat Recipe that you can easily prepare yourself for the faithful companion in your life who deserves a treat because hes special...
1/2 cup powdered milk
1 egg, well beaten
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1 1/2 tsp brown sugar
1/2 cup water
6 tblsp gravy
Baby food meat

Mix all ingredients well. Roll out on a floured board about 1/2" thick. Cut out cookie shapes with floured cutters.
Bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes. Cool, maybe leaving them in the oven to dry. Cookies should be hard. Store in an airtight container. From the Kitchen over at Bullwinkle.com

Our Canine Cousin: The Dingo

What is the dingo? Is he a direct descendant of the wolf or is he a wild dog which was once domesticated, then turned wild again? This puzzle is as frustrating as the proverbial chicken-and-egg progression.

Genetically, the dingo is homogeneous to the pale-footed Asian wolf (canis lupus pallipes), presumed still to exist in certain remote, mountainous regions of Asia. It is believed that he has altered very little from his prehistoric forebears, which were widely distributed throughout Africa.

It is believed further that he came to Australia in a semi-domesticated condition during the last phase of the Ice Age (15,000 B.C.), and that he was in the company of nomadic aborigines who had trekked across the Indonesian archipelago.

He wandered as far as New Guinea, where he developed into a smaller variety of dingo (which is called New Guinea singing dog because of its opera-like howling at sundown), but he did not make it to Tasmania or Kangaroo Island. It is interesting to note that the singing dog's diminished size may be the result of selective breeding.

What Do Dingo's Look Like & How Do They Live?

The average dingo is about 24 inches high, which is somewhat smaller than the Asian wolf, but his legs are longer than the wolf's. Many other wolf-like characteristics distinguish him from the domesticated dog. A growing body of medical research suggests that people who own or interact regularly with animals may be healthier than people who don't. Some suggest that a cat's unique and soothing purring may be the key. Others say it's a matter of the owner's personality, not the cat itself. Its been proven on the other hand when dogs have been taken into hospitals and old folks homes that they also relieve stress and make people feel good when they pet the dog. Some old people who have never smiled or moved all of a sudden while petting the dogs head, a smile appears on their faces and they even move their hand in order to be able to pet the dog or hug him.
