WJHG in Florida reports on a Fort Walton Beach woman says she’s alive because of her wiener dog. The 10-year-old dachshund, who had been rescued from a shelter himeslf, returned the favour last weekend.

On a related subject, here’s a report on the difficulties rescuers can face when the dogs they’re dealing with dogs who — like Rudy the Dachshund — have been abused.

Let’s be honest. Knitting does not happen a lot here at the world editorial headquarters of the Dachshund News so we were a bit surprised, to say the least, at how many of our readers bought this book: Knit Your Own Dog: Easy-to-Follow Patterns for 25 Pedigree Pooches. When we looked inside, however, we immediately saw the appeal. The dogs are fantastic including the Afghan Hound, the Scottish Terrier, and needless to say the Dachshund.

As the editorial staff of the Doxie News was seeking out stories to bring you, we came across this tale of Felix, an older Dachshund, passed from father to daughter.

In a way, I think that’s why we bonded, Felix and I. We had something truly unique in common: We’d both survived the Victor Ozaist style of child rearing – tossed into the ocean, with absolutely no warning. (That’s how I learned to swim, too, and how both Felix and I ended up absolutely terrified of water as “kids.”)

Halfway through his puppyhood, my father whisked Felix across the country with him. When I went to visit them in Arizona around Christmastime, Felix came flying down the dusty, ochre-colored road toward me with a look on his face of “Get me the hell out of here!”

Happily, and as is often not the case with Tributes at the Dachshund News, Felix is still alive and living out his golden years in Brooklyn close to Prospect Park.

Dachshunds are one of the breeds most susceptible to spinal cord injuries so it’s a great to hear about a promising drug trial that may mean fewer wiener dogs in wheelchairs.

At the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, in a study funded by the U.S. Department of Defense with a $750,000 grant, the drug Illomostat is being given to short-legged, long-torso dog breeds like dachshunds, beagles and corgis in the hopes that if it is successful it can eventually be used on humans who suffer  trauma to the spinal cord.

MSNBC has the details including the story of Beanie, a wheelchair-bound Dachshund whose veterinarian owner works at Texas A&M.

Poor Malachy the Pekingese. The little guy’s been dealing with a lot of haterz since he won the 2012 Westminster title earlier this week. While the Dachshund News agrees that his handler, David Fitzpatrick, was a bit OCD with that omnipresent purple brush, we don’t think Malachy should be blamed for that. The Pekes we’ve known have always been pretty tough little dogs. And according to www.webvet.com, they are the toy dog most appealing to men. Famous owners of Pekingese include Alice Roosevelt, J.P. Morgan, Elizabeth Taylor and Pakistan’s former President, Pervez Musharraf (shown below).

The Pekingese is the preferred toy dog of macho men and dictators

A journalist colleague of mine used to say that stories involving dogs, sex or Kennedys should always be considered for the front page, so clearly when you’ve got two out of three, it’s still news even if the photo was shot in 1937.
Here’s John F. Kennedy with “Dunker” the Dachshund puppy in Den Haag, the Netherlands while touring Europe that summer of 1937. Aren’t they both cute?

This is a long video at more than half an hour, but it’s a fun look at the great variation in hound types as the judge runs through the breeds in alphabetical order. The Dachshunds make their appearance at the 15 minute-mark beginning with the longhaired Dachshund winner, GCH Hundeleben Queen’s Armada SL, also known as Cheese. He was number one for all systems (?), all coats in 2011, according to the announcer.

Next up is Gino aka GCH Brownwood D’Geno Rock SS, the smooth Dachshund winner.

Then comes GCH Raydachs Playing With Fire V Gleishorbach also known as Cinders, a two-year-old Texan girl, who wins the group and goes on to compete for Best in Show.
