Facebook iPhone App gets an Update with Great New features

Not ones to sit around, Facebook have today release version 1.1 of their free iPhone / iPod Touch App.

This update brings some great new features:

You can now write on your friends' walls, view their photo albums, and see their full profiles.
Photo browsing is more fun now with the addition of photo tags - just hold your finger down on a photo to make them appear.
Photos uploading has also been made much faster.
You can finally upload pictures from your library that you've previously taken.
Dozens of bugs have also been fixed, greatly improving stability.

Nice! Upgrading is easy... Either go to your applications tab in iTunes on your PC/Mac and select 'check for Application Updates' or start up the Wireless App Store on your iPhone or iPod Touch, and it'll show up as available at the bottom.

iPhone .co.uk Keyboard - And other countries

Kirsty over at nocto.com dropped me comment about how I could get the .com button on my iPhone and iPod Touch keyboard to support .co.uk - Thanks Kirsty!

So here's how you set it up.

1. Tap the 'settings' icon on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
2. Then 'General', 'Keyboard' and 'International Keyboards'.
3. In the 'International Keyboards' menu, select 'English (UK)'.

That's it. You can choose other additional countries also.

So now your keyboard will look like this. Note the new 'globe' icon. You use this to switch between USA and UK keyboard.

Now hold the '.com' button and you'll see the '.co.uk' option.

If you are running the new 2.0 firmware on your iPhone or iPod touch, you might not have noticed a new handy shortcut in Safari. When you type in your address, hold down the ".com" button to get a selection of 3 other domain name endings: ".net," ".edu," and ".org." When you tap on any of the endings, it will be automatically inserted in the address.

~~Shame there's currently no support for country specific domains such as .co.uk :(~~

Regular readers will already know I "knocked out" (OMG! Forgive the pun) a guide to Porn for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPod early this year (ipodhoney.com). Well, there's a commission to be made should anyone actually decide to purchase membership to any of the sites listed, and a blokes gotta earn a crust, right?

Why the TypePad iPhone App is getting such poor Ratings and Reviews

Thanks to a comment in the iPhone User group on FriendFeed, I just realised why the iPhone TypePad App is getting a bit of a battering in the reviews and ratings section on the iTunes App Store.

It's simply an issue of communication and managing customer expectations.

First off, I gave the iPhone TypePad App a 5 star rating and review because it's really very good, but that's only because I'm already a user of the TypePad Professional Blogging Platform. I have 5 Pro accounts with TypePad.

The problem, and cause of the bad ratings and reviews that the iPhone TypePad App is receiving, is that in the iTunes App Store it's not made at all clear that it's JUST the TypePad App that's free, and not a TypePad blog account. Oops!

iPhone users are downloading it, thinking that they're getting a free blog account.

So the customer expectation is set high, and they're really disappointed when they discover they need a TypePad account, which costs money.

The fix is simple. Just a couple of changes are required to the TypePad App Page in iTunes.

1. In the 'REQUIREMENTS' list, add that a 'TypePad Account is Required'.

2. In the main 'APPLICATION DESCRIPTION', change it so that it reads "TypePad Blog account holders can update your blog and share photos..."

The latter is most important, because it's also shown in the Wireless iTunes App Store that iPhone and iPod Touch users can access from their device.

So, there you go TypePad. Clear up the fact that it's only the iPhone App that's free and your rating will in the iTunes App Store will justly improve.

Back in October 2007 I posted an article regarding Scams aimed at iPod users. I thought I'd take a little time to warn of the iPhone scams that have cropped up (and iPod Touch Scams) . Particularly with for all the new 3G iPhone owners.

So you get yourself an iPhone, and naturally you'll want to pimp it out with all the latest videos, movies, games, music and any other iPhone goodies you can get your hands on.

While there may be a few legitimate 3rd party iPhone content sites out there, I've never actually come across one. However, there's a shit load of unscrupulous web marketeers that'll do anything to cash in on the iPhone hype by offering you "1000's of DVD films, Videos, Games and Music" for your swanky new iPhone.

So what's the offer?

Buried at the bottom of their sign up page is a dislaimer (they colour the text so you don't notice it - twats!)

Disclaimer: This website is a database (ie: an index) to other websites that host downloads. This website does not facilitate in the download process in any way. This website is not affiliated with, nor has control over any of the websites it links to.

Bottom line? Instead of loads of iPhone downloads you just get a list of links to other sites that have downloads. The same sites can be found by doing a search on Google, and of which most also have fuck all to offer you either.

I've seen 4 or 5 variations of the same site. Fairly sure it's the same people. They also do versions for owners of the Sony PSP. They're simply in the business of taking your cash. Bastards!

How to activate o2 Pay as You Go on an original iPhone

So now that we know the original iPhone works with existing o2 PAY As You Go SIM Cards - See Original iPhone o2 Pay as You Go available today - I thought I'd list the steps to activating the original iPhone with an o2 PAYG SIM card.

Steps To Activating your Original iPhone on o2 Pay As You Go

I was using an existing o2 PAYG SIM Card. The o2 site says "Buy an iPhone SIM Card", but you can in fact use any o2 PAYG SIM card. The only difference with an iPhone SIM card is the tariff. All of which can be changed on any PAYG SIM card, whenever you want.

Anyway, I was using an existing PAYG SIM card. I've no idea what tariff it's on, I can't remember and it really doesn't matter.

1. Put the SIM card in to the original iPhone.

2. Connect the iPhone to iTunes.

I'm assuming you already have the iTunes software, and an existing iTunes account.

3. Once connected to iTunes you'll eventually see a welcome screen. This tells you that you'll need to create an iTunes account, but you can use your existing iTunes account login and password.

4. Select continue.

5. Done! Yep it was that easy. You get prompted to upgrade to iPhone 2.0 software, if you haven't already done so.

The optional next step is to decide whether you want to add the o2 Web / Wi-fi Bolt On to your tariff for £10 a month. Worth noting that the wi-fi connection will work on your home, school, uni or work wi-fi WITHOUT paying the £10 a month. The wi-fi function is built in to the iPhone, not the SIM card.

If you want to add the o2 Web / Wi-fi Bolt you'll need to either call 2425 free or text WWW to 21300 free, from the PAYG Sim card.

Original iPhone - o2 Pay As You Go available today

Original iPhone - o2 Pay As You Go is launched today

The big question I had in the lead up to the launch of the 3G iPhone was "What can I do with the old one"?

I'd like Mrs doipod to use it, but on a Pay as You Go tariff, not on another monthly contract. Ideally, I'd like her to be able to use her existing o2 PAYG Sim card.

I spoke with staff at various o2 and Car Phone Warehouse stores, all of whom told me that I'd be able to use it on an o2 PAYG tariff later this year. I'd simply buy a SIM card and plug it in to the old iPhone.

All the o2 web site had to say on the matter was that "Pay as You Go will be available later this year".

Well, it's TODAY!

Just 2 days after the launch of 3G iPhone, I was digging around the o2 site and read...

Original iPhone?

Already an O2 Pay & Go customer
If you're an O2 Pay & Go customer you can use your current O2 Pay & Go SIM card with the original 2G iPhone. To make the most of the iPhone features, you can add the O2 Web and Wi-Fi Bolt On for £10 a month giving you unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi access**.

To add the Bolt On you'll need to either call 2425 free or text WWW to 21300 free. The only thing that does not work with this option is the Visual Voicemail.

Alternatively....

If you're not already with O2 or aren't eligible for the above options, you can use the original iPhone on a Pay & Go basis. You just need to get a Pay & Go iPhone SIM card from any O2 store. The iPhone SIM card is set to the Favourite Place tariff, so gives you unlimited calls to any UK landline or O2 mobile from your chosen postcode when you top-up £30 or more a month. If you don't like the sound of this tariff, you'll be able to switch to one of our other Pay & Go tariffs.

So I grabbed her SIM card, stuck it in the old iPhone and it was up and running in less than 5 mins! Also, the Wi-fi connection works fine from home, so we'll not bother paying £10 a month for the o2 web / wi-fi access.

The 911 Webapp - It's a Joke, Right?

Just having a quick scout through the old iPhone webapp listings at www.apple.com/webapps/ and I came across the 911 webapp.

In an emergency you wave your iPhone around in the air while it displays this image:

Here's the official blurb... "Use your iPhone as a safety device to get help. Upon turning your iPhone to landscape position (sideways) you can fill the iPhone screen with an animated 911/Help message in red and white.

This is a joke, right? Forgetting that I'm in UK for a moment. Under what circumstance, in an emergency, would I wave my iPhone around trying to catch someone's attention in the hope that they would call 911 for me?

I could rant on about how totally fucking pointless and useless this iPhone web app is, but I'll finish with the fact that if I was need of 911 assistance, and started waving my iPhone about, surely some fucker would just come and take my iPhone off me?

AirMe iPhone App - Making the camera button obsolete?

I downloaded the free AirMe app from the iTunes App Store. It's a clever app for taking, publishing and sharing your photos.

Okay, at first glance it doesn't sound particularly clever, but what makes this iPhone app stand out is the fact that it stores the location and weather info of where the photo was taken. Okay, I personally see little point in the weather info, but for the app to know the name of the village I live in is pretty impressive.

I tool a photo of Mrs doipod and it automatically tagged the photo with "Mostly Sunny, 17C, United Kingdom, England, Corton, AirMe, iPhone". You can then add your own tags before or after your publish it to either your free AirMe account or Flickr account.

The app invites you to sign up for a free AirMe account when you first start it up.

The photos are also added to your iPhone Camera Roll. So I'm not sure why I'd ever use the standard iPhone Camera button again. AirMe does so much more. I give this 4 stars out of 5.

No iTunes Wireless Store over 3G - Bummer

I just assumed that because the new Wireless iTunes App Store worked over 3G, that the Wireless iTunes store would also work over 3G.

NOPE!

When I tried it out earlier today, I got the same "Cannot Connect to the iTunes Store... You must connect to a Wi-Fi network to access the iTunes Store" message that I got on my old iPhone, using the Edge connection.

Bit of a bummer really! I'd gladly buy songs on the go. Would you?

It also knocks the Shazam App from the top spot if my 'Fave iPhone Apps'. The Shazam App is incredible...

Whenever you hear a song being played on the radio, TV, film or in a store etc, you hold up your iPhone to the music. Within seconds it'll tell you the song tile and artist.

You can then buy the music directly via the Wireless iTunes Store or watch related videos on youtube. Simply brilliant!

The 'buy now' feature is entirely useless when you're about and about.

A few limitations of the Wireless iTunes App Store

I was testing out the Wireless App Store while I was getting my car cleaned earlier today. Aside for giving me conerns about the Excessive Data Usage Policy of my mobile carrier, there's a couple of other limitations that could do with a fix next time around.

1. What's the App File Size?
No where on the Wireless version of the App Store does it tell you how big the app file size is. It's be nice to know it before you hit install. The app I tested out was nearly 3mb. It took about 5 mins to download.

2. No Pause, Stop or Cancel Button
It would be handy to be able to pause, stop (same thing?) or cancel an App download. I had no idea how big the app was, and after 2 minutes I was quite ready to stop it and do it when I got back to my PC or wi-fi connection at home.

iPhone Excessive Data Usage Policy

I was getting my car cleaned today. While they were busy giving it a shine I had a snoop around the App Store using O2's 3G connection. I dound a free app of interest do I hit the install button button.

It's the first time I had downloaded anything of a significant size to my iPhone over 3G. I had no idea what to expect, but the hype surrounding 3G had set my expectations high. Too high in fact... It took about 5 minutes to download a 3mb app from the iTunes App Store.

I could only find out the app file size when I got home and checked it out on iTunes via my PC. No where on the Wireless App store does it tell you the file size. Also, there's no way of stopping or pausing the download once it's started. That's a pain in the arse. After 4 minutes I was ready to ditch the download.

So this got me to thing about O2's excessive data policy. I checked out the O2 site and the O2 iPhone Terms and Conditions states...

O2 Web Daily allows you unlimited use of Telefónica O2 UK Limited's Edge/GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card:

to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing; or
in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.

If O2 reasonably suspectsyou are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges, impose network protection controls which may reduce your speed of transmission or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.

Well that's as clear as mud! I wanted to know an actual limit per month. 10mb? 50mb? 100mb?

So I contacted O2's iPhone customer service number (dial 2302 from your iPhone -a free call) and asked the woman "What's your 3G limits per month"?

She said it is was unlimited. I explained that I had just downloaded a 3mb file over 3G from the itunes App store, and that if I did that every day I would rack up 90mb of data usage every month. "Would that be considered excessive usage"?

Her reply, "Umm. No. I don't think so".

I asked, "What if I did 5mb per day, 150mb per month"?

Her reply, "It's unlimited"

So, there you have it. Are you any the wiser? No? I'd didn't think so. but she did finish by saying that they wouldn't just cut you off if they deemed you to be using too much data. They would call you first to discuss your usage.

Car Phone Warehouse screwed up 3G iPhone Launch

'kin twats at my local Car Phone Warehouse in Lowestoft, Suffolk said they were opening at 7am. I even phoned late yesterday to confirm it was still on. I even spoke with the manager because he "had been to a meeting" about the launch, and I has a question about the upgrade process.

"Yep, we'll have them in stock" and "We'll be open at 7am"... "See you in the morning" he said.

So I get up and drag the family to CPW. There was another bloke aleady at the door, which was locked. "8.02 mate" said the bloke.

I range the door bell and gave the knob head that answered it a gob full for wasting my fucking time.

So, thanks to the new Typepad iPhone App, I'm typing this as we make our way to the 02 store in Norwich, about 30 miles away. Sure it's a waste of petrol, and there is another Car Phone Warehouse in Great Yarmouth, which is only 10 miles away, but I'm not giving the idiots at CPW any of my money.

A Quick Guide to the iPhone and iPod Touch Parental Controls

The 2.0 iPhone software that's released via iTunes 7.7 on July 11th comes with a Parental Control function.

2.0 is available for both the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Setting up Parental Control on an iPhone or iPod Touch is straight forward:

1. Select 'Settings'.
2. Select 'Restrictions'.
3. Select 'Enable Restrictions'.
4. Choose a 4 Digit Pin Code.

That's it.

Take a look at the screen shot. When you select 'OFF' for any of the applications, it removes the icon from the home screen. So rather than limiting what they can do with the application, it simply makes the whole application unavailable.

Typepad iPhone Blogging App Review

So I'm sat here testing out the new TypePad iPhone app that's available free from the new iTunes app store... Well, Do iPod uses the typepad blogging platform, so this message was posted using my iPhone. It's a nice tool. Not great for me personally. But not at all bad.

So I thought I'd give a more extensive review of the TypePad iPhone App, but I'm not gonna type it all up on the iPhone. In fact that really sums up the experience for me. While the TypePad iPhone App may not be of great use to full time desk top blogger, it really is an incredible tool for the 'mobile blogger' or 'family blogger'.

Setting it up was easy. The first time I started it up, it asked me for my username password. Once up and running it has 3 main features...

'Create a Post'
This worked very well. I love that fact that it had all of my blog categories listed and I could select multiple categories. A very nice touch. I can set the title of the post, type away at the main text of the post and add a photo. Publishing the article took about 30 seconds, and you get a pop up confirmation that lets you go straight to your published article.

'Take a Photo'
Again flawless. Select the take a photo feature and it automatically starts up the iPhone camera. Take the picture, move and scale and then select use 'use photo'. It saves the photo and then you select which of your blog catagories your want the photo posted to. Add some text and select submit. Moments later the photo is up on your blog.

'Add a Photo'
Works much in the same way as take a photo, but it allows you to broswer through your iphone camera roll and select individual or multiple photos to post to your blog.

Other Nice Touches
- If you have multiple blogs on your account, you can easily select to which blog you want to post.
- You can set it up to post your Twitters.
