iPhone on Orange in the UK

Orange has reached an agreement to sell Apple's popular iPhone in the UK.

The deal ends an exclusive arrangement between UK network operator O2 and the Californian phone maker, which has been in place since 2007.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone "later this year" but did not specify a date or pricing.

However, analysts said that in markets where there was already competition there was little difference in handset prices but small variations in tariffs.

"There's not a lot they can do - they are subsidising the hardware, so they can't afford to do much on the tariff," said Carolina Milanesi of Gartner.

"You may see a £30 per month tariff versus £35, but I would not expect anything more."

The iPhone GPS app market unleashed by the release of the iPhone 3.0 software update is getting more interesting by the day, with several developers in an arms race to add new features to their initial offerings.

Taking the lead in the GPS app race is Navigon MobileNavigator, which recently added support for spoken street names—a major failing in the three apps that I previewed in a Macworld Video last month. My own in-car navigation box doesn’t even speak street names (other than numbered freeways), and it sure makes a big difference.

Physics, schmysics: That’s what Apple seems to be saying when it comes to the company’s latest iPod Nanos, introduced by Steve Jobs in San Francisco.

The new Nanos are pixies just like their predecessors. The designs are identical: 3.6 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide and less than a quarter-of-an-inch thick. As before, I suspect most buyers will use the Nano mainly for music, though it can also show movies, TV shows, pictures and more.

$100 Price Cut on Apple TV's

Apple TV, which has so far been a minor failure, will get a boost from both the new iTunes LP format and a $100 price cut. However, you may want to hold off on that purchase for an expected new model.

Some had thought the new Apple TV would debut as part of the 09/09/09 "Only rock and roll" event. Indeed, with the new iTunes LP, enhanced online music product, and additional DVD content becoming available, a new Apple TV would have been a fine addition to the event.

iTunes 9 Launched

With due fanfare, Apple finally unveiled iTunes 9 at the Rock and Roll event yesterday. Its media management software is now available for download on PC and Mac. Apparently, the leaked pictures showing the social network integration feature finally saw daylight. The all new iTunes 9 comes with a cleaner polished look, navigational improvement, tweaked icons and a redesigned iTunes Store.

Packing a number of new features, the iTunes 9 is touted to improve the music and movies experience. Apple CEO Steve Jobs heartily boasted about the new Genius Mixes feature that is like having a personal DJ which automatically generates 12 endless song mixes from the iTunes library. Genius Mixes feature also categorizes movies and the apps installed on the iPhone or the iPod Touch.

New Home Sharing feature now allows copying music, movies and TV shows across from up to five authorized home computers. Possession of iTunes Music Store account is must for the Home Sharing. By sharing the iTunes libraries to the authorized computers, users can drag-n-drop content from one library to other or stream the content.

iPhone Developers See Sales Slump After App Store Changes

The changes Apple made to its App Store through the release of iTunes 9 are being met with a mixture of gratitude and worry by iPhone developers. There's appreciation for changes that improve app exposure but some developers, particularly smaller ones, are seeing a decline in sales.

Beyond the ongoing controversy over Apple's management of the iPhone app approval process -- which culminated in the unusual public posting of Apple's response to an FCC inquiry about the way Apple vets apps -- there's the more mundane difficulty the company faces in managing its success.

Google Adsense have released details of the beta version of Google Adsense for iPhone App Developers.

To participate in the beta trial, the app must be getting 100,000 page views a day, but once it rolls out to all app developers, I reckon it'll prove to be one of the most popular methods of monetizing the 10,000's of free app available in the app store.

Inititally integration of the ads will done via an SDK.

More importantly, it'll give the jokers over a AdMOB and long deserved kick in the arse.

Cartier Saying iPhone & iPod Touch App Infringing Trademark

Luxury watch maker Cartier International has sued Apple Inc., saying the electronics giant is offering software that infringes on its designs without authorization.

The trademark lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in Manhattan. It sought a stop to the practice and unspecified damages.

Cartier said in the lawsuit that Apple is offering for sale, via its iTunes store, products that use the Cartier trademarks. It said the applications enable customers to display time on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The watch manufacturer said it never authorized Apple to use images that look like its watches on the software. A message left with Apple for comment was not immediately returned.

iTunes to sell copy protection-free songs.

Apple has agreed to start selling digital songs without copy protection software from its iTunes store along with over-the-air download songs for its popular iPhone, according to people familiar with its plans.

The maker of the iPod is also set to announce a deal to roll out variable pricing on digital songs at the iTunes Music Store with songs priced between 79 cents (53 pence) and $1.29.

Apple is expected to announce the changes at the Macworld Expo trade show in San Francisco later on Tuesday.

Copy protection software, also known as digital rights management or DRM, has proved a controversial topic with music fans and record labels alike.

DRM was designed to prevent fans from illegally sharing digital downloads on file-sharing services. But it also prevented many fans from moving their own songs between devices and became increasingly unpopular.

Apple's founder, Steve Jobs, publicly called on major record labels to drop DRM in February 2007.

In exchange, labels have been asking that iTunes agree to sell songs at variable prices. Currently, iTunes sells all individual songs at 99 cents regardless of their popularity or date of release, unlike most other retail outlets.

Apple is also expected to announce details to allow iPhone 3G and iPod Touch Wifi users to buy songs while on the go, over the air through its popular App Store.

iPod to Computer Transfer Software

I found myself having to hunt out software to get music off iPod over the holidays. My son's computer had a major meltdown, and his iPod is packed with a few hundred dollars worth of songs that he's collected over the last few years.

Sim City Game launches on iPhone and iPod Touch

SimCity for iPhone and iPod Touch has arrived in the iTunes App Store. Early player reviews complain of the app crashing.

It's a pain in the arse, but some of these big games require you to restart your iPhone / iPod Touch.

There are two versions available. SimCity for users in the USA ($9.99) and SimCity (International) (£5.99) for users everywhere else. There's no difference in gamplay, it's a licensing issue that requires two versions to be available.

UPDATE: Gotta share with you that I've been playing with this for a while, and if you're a hard core SimCity fan you will be bitterly disappointed with SimCity on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Isn't one of the best features of SimCity on your desktop computer, that you get to sit back and take a look at your huge, sprawling metropolis?

Try that on an iPhone / iPod Touch screen. It simply sucks!

The official launch date is a little vague. I'm told that they'll be going live mid-December 2008, and I have no idea what countries these will work in.

One thing I do know from experience is that Brightshare is fully regulated and compliant with gamblling regulation. So my money's safe... well right up until I think I have that killer hand.

Who'd have thought that the first Tomb Raider game for iPhone would be a webapp?

That's exactly what fans of Tomb Raider and the iPhone can expect to see later this month, when Brightshare launch a "real money" casino game for the iPhone under the the Tomb Raider franchise.

They've long held a license to provide a mobile casino games using the Tomb Raider brand, and the first Tomb Raider iPhone game will be a casino slot machine.

So, not at all what we expected from a Tomb Raider game on the iPhone.

You probably already know this, but I only discovered it today. So I'm sharing it with others that might have missed it. The iPhone earbuds that come bundled withe the iPhone ALREADY have a buillt in 'Pause' and 'Skip Song' button.

Press the microphone on the earbuds once to pause a song, press it twice to skip to the next song.

UPDATE: Press it three times and it skips BACK a song.

A couple of weeks ago I went scouting around the internet for some iPhone App Reviews. Not the reviews you get in the iTunes App Store, but more indepth, online app reviews.

I came across a few sites, most notable was http://www.iphoneappreviews.net - I've been meaning to give them a 'shout out' for the last week.

If you like to do a little research in to an iPhone App before you part with your hard earned cash, then you'll not go wrong checking iPhone App Reviews, to see if they've covered the app. The site tag line says it best... "Honest reviews of the latest, greatest, and lamest iPhone apps"

I've just finished building my new iPhone and iPod Touch apps chart site at thumblounge.com/topapps/

I couldn't find a site that let me view the top selling paid apps and most downloaded free apps for EACH of the app categories. So I've taken a feed from the iTunes App Store and output for all to see.

The really great thing is that the charts are automatically updated by Apple, so it's ALWAYS showing the the most current chart data.

The only bummer is that Apple don't provide specific data for iPod Touch Apps that would have enabled me to create a separate version for iPod Touch users.

Apple DIDN'T Fix the Wireless iTunes App Store Bug that's screwing Users and App Developers alike

With iPhone 2.1, a bug was introduced that meant links to apps in the Wireless App Store don't work in the iPhone / iPod Touch safari browser.

Bottom line, if you're viewing this page on your iPhone or iPod Touch, THIS LINK won't work. It should take you to a game called 'Punch-o-meter' in the Wireless iTunes App Store on your device. Instead you'll simply get a a pop up error.

Bad News

Bad news for users that want to download the free and paid games and apps that they see reviewed, and really bad news for the developers that would really love for you to download them.

What's bad for users and bad for the developers is naturally bad for Apple and a number of other companies. Aside from the fact that your iPhone isn't working as intended, Apple will lose money on the great many 'impulse purchases' that drive app sales.

The numerous Mobile Marketing Networks such as AdMob make a living from selling ads on iphone optimized sites. If developers aren't going to get downloads using Admob, they stop advertising.

Apple were made aware of the bug by many developers, straight after 2.1 was released. They've had many weeks to fix the problem with today's release of iPhone 2.2 firmware update, but it simply didn't happen.

So how long until it's fixed? Your guess is as good as mine, but until then everyone loses out.

I've been watching the freeverse site over the last few weeks with eager anticipation. Burning Monkey Casino game has finally been launched for the iphone and iPod Touch.

Priced at just $0.99c / £0.59p, it stomped straight in at #26 in the iPhone Games Chart and iPod Touch Games Chart. Expect it to be top 10 within a day or two!

I've just grabbed my copy and it certainly lives up to the hype. It's excellent! 7 casino games in one app. Great value for monkey. I'll put together a full review soon.

iPhone Poker Games

I've been playing Aces Texas Hold 'em on my iPhone for quite some time. It's always floating around in the iPhone Games Chart. It costs $4.99 / £2.99.

A Better iPhone Poker Game

I've just come across another, even better iPhone poker game called "Live Poker". It's free to download in the iTunes App Store, and while that's an obvious plus, it's the real time, online multiplayer feature that blows me away!

While Aces Texas Hold 'em lets you play against others over your local wi-fi network, it's best as a solo Poker game, pitching you against computer players.

Live Poker on the other hand, has you playing against real players over the internet. You can play via iPhone 3G or Wi-fi. I've yet to test it out using EDGE.

Worth noting that neither are "real money" poker games. So you can only lose the 'virtual shirt' off of your 'virtual back'.

There are thousands of players on Live Poker for the iPhone, and how they have managed to get so many people playing already is really very clever. You see the company that developed the game are in fact online game developers. Live Poker has been around for ages, they've simply built an iPhone game that connects you seamlessly to the other player whether they're play via the web or via an iPhone. Told you it was clever stuff.

My nick name is "puntmobile". I you find yourself at a poker table with me, say hi. I may even use the in-game feature that lets me buy you a beer :)

Back in June, I put together a webapp for the GTA IV XBox game. Nothing too remarkable, it simply listed the in game cheats and other information. It's still very popular with a large number of game players.

I mean, they really stole it. The code, images and even my page stats tracking code. The fool that copied couldn't be bothered to remove my stats tracking code, so I know exactly how many visitors he's getting and where they're coming from.

Over the past few months I've assisted numerous iPhone App Developers in marketing their Apps to iPhone users, each has enjoyed an increase in downloads/purchases as a result of my advice.
