Later herbs &amp;amp; leather &amp;amp; a hint of dried flowers appear. Mid bodied with silky medium - tannins, medium acidity, with red fruits and herbs on the palate. Great length. Does not taste like any other Greek wine (whether from international or local grapes) and that is no bad thing. Very individual. Moreish. Brings to mind an aged Italian wine but does not have the tannins of either barolo or brunello. On the contrary it is perfectly smooth and mellowed and at a perfect stage of its evolution - may keep but now seems to be at peak. From a maverick producer who dares put on the market wines aged for ten years. Thousand bravos! Surely one of the best wines Greece produces - if not the best by far... It is produced in miniscule quantities from the local liatiko and mandilari grapes and is released whenever the producer thinks it is ready.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Very light garnet-brick with orange hues. Very fragrant with elegant aromas of blood orange, red cherry, herbs like thyme, flowers, earth and noble animal notes. Mid-bodied but quite mouth-coating with ultra-silky tanins, bright fruit, obvious alcohol due to the relatively low extract (13.5% on the label), balancing acidity and a long finish. A very elegant and idiosyncratic wine speaking of its place of origin and the passion of its producer. Regarding its style, it reminds of an old-fashioned, aged Pessac-Leognan, an aged Barolo and a Sicilian nerello mascalese. Great job. Ready to drink now. Yannis Economou marches to his own idiosyncratic beat. It is a complex, challenging and ultimately rewarding rhythm.  With an unrivalled curriculum vitae, fluent in five languages, this 47-year-old was, when I first visited him back in 1995, a reluctant disciple of natural wine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He argues, convincingly, that he had no other choice in making such wines. It is the anomaly of the Ziros plateau (600 m.) that these 60- to 70-year-old ungrafted vines are solely responsible for delivering low yields and a naturally high acidity. He adds, “I just nurture them (very low sulphuring) and bottle when I feel they are ready”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He does admit to selling off lesser vintages and keeping only the best vintages. The current release is the 2000 Sitia. The only other dry vintage to preview was a stunning 2006 Sitia. It tasted so shockingly youthful that it only reiterated Economou’s viewpoint of his unique plateau where he sources his remarkable grapes. Economou claims that what is called “Liatiko” in central and western Crete could well be another, altogether different grape. I am not so sure. Fellow Cretan producer Nikos Douloufakis, in Dafnes, above the town of Iraklio, claims he has seen the Ziros Liatiko grapes. He says it is a different, smaller-berried clone. Coupled with the high altitude and much cooler nights, this may explain the measurable difference in styles and the success of this remarkable bone-dry red wine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Having recently enjoyed a Morgon by the father of natural wine, the late Marcel Lapierre, I could not help thinking what Marcel would have thought of this vin-de-terroir natural-wine rarity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pale, ruby brown. Initially reductive, it opens up after 20 minutes in carafe. Very Burgundian, floral and spice, Pinot-noir nose.  Ethereal, very fine aromas evolving in the glass. Delicate but insistent middle palate that blossoms in layers on the aftertaste.  A wine of great purity. Classy. Complete. Der Grill ist schon heiß, das Gemüse geschnippelt, Oliven und Olivenöl aus eigenem Bio-Anbau stehen auf dem Tisch.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Der  Winzer  Giannis  Economou  ist  ein  sehr entspannter Typ. Anders könnte man die Ar-beitsbedingungen auf seiner im Jahr 1612 ge-bauten Domaine im Osten Kretas auch kaum ertragen. Mitten im Dorf liegt sie, Edelstahl-tanks  und  Holzfässer  sind  reingequetscht  in winzige Räume. „Das Haus wurde 1821 so ge-baut“, erzählt er, „meine Vorfahren kämpften in der Revolution gegen die Osmanen und zo-gen sich hierher zurück. Um alle unterzubrin-gen, mussten die Zimmer unterteilt werden.“ Schon sein Großvater  hatte  hier Wein  ge-macht, den aber nie in Flaschen gefüllt und die  Region  nie  verlassen.  Giannis  dagegen&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;sammelte Erfahrungen in Europas wichtigsten Weinregionen. Franz Keller in Baden nahm ihn erst nach langem Zögern als Praktikanten, überreichte ihm aber dann am Monatsende ei-nen Umschlag mit 1800 Mark und erklärte ihn für fest ange-stellt. Zwei Jahre blieb Giannis Economou in Vogtsburg am Kaiserstuhl, ging dann zu Ceretto in Piemont und arbeitete schließlich als Önologe auf Château Margaux. In die Heimat kam er 1994 zurück. Seitdem produziert er Weine, die auch international Erfolg haben.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;„Burgundischer Stil“, sagt er über seine Roten, „nicht dunkel, eher rubinrot, Finesse statt Kraft.“ So ist sein wichtigstes Ex-portland Frankreich, gefolgt von Belgien und Deutschland. Die Mengen sind allerdings bescheiden: Von seinen neun be-pflanzten Hektar füllt der Winzer gerade einmal 20 000 Fla-schen – biologischer Anbau, auf dem Etikett aber nicht ausge-lobt. „Ich schreibe meinen Namen drauf, das genügt“, sagt er selbstbewusst. Seine Reben sind durchschnittlich 50 Jahre alt. Anders als in anderen kretischen Regionen gab es hier vor 20 Jahren keine Reblausplage, „so haben wir die alten Stöcke er-halten, und deren Trauben ergeben sanftere Tannine“. Die nied-rigen Reben ducken sich an den Boden, das Laub stellt sicher, dass die wenige Feuchtigkeit nicht verdampft: „Bei euch sind die Steillagen die besten, hier ist es umgekehrt.“&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Das zeigt er mit seinem „Sitia“ aus den Sorten Liatiko und Mandilari, von dem er neben dem aktuellen Jahrgang auch noch den 1998er präsentiert – ohne Schwefel ausgebaut und trotzdem immer noch mit sehr lebendiger Frucht. Zum Ab-schluss einen „Sitia Red Sweet“, quasi eine Beerenauslese. Gianms Economou spricht ausgezeichnet Deutsch und erinnert sich gut an die Zeit, als seine Frau in Freiburg im Breisgau Medizin studierte und er einen Job suchte, Franz Keller aus Oberbergen stellte den Griechen 1990 als Praktikanten auf Probe ein und versprach ihm einen Monatslohn von 400 Mark. Bei der ersten Auszahlung fand Giannis 1500 Mark in seinem Kuvert, dachte an einen Irrtum und sprach beim Chef vor - worauf er gleich für zwei Jahre fest angestellt wurde, so angetan war der Patron des «Schwarzen Adlers» von dem griechischen «Gastarbeiter». Danach studierte der junge Mann Agrar Wirtschaft, war durch den süddeutschen Winzer aber so auf den Weingeschrnack gekommen, dass er später im Piemont (bei Scavino und Ceretto} und schliesslich auch in Bordeaux arbeitete - auf Chäteau Margaux.&lt;br /&gt;1995 kehrte er in die kretische Heimat zurück und begann selbst mit dem Wein- und Olivenanbau. Und das eher unkonventionell. Die uralte Rotweinsone Liatiko kommt bei Giannis Economou ungeschwefelt in die Flasche, dennoch wird der Wein erst etliche Jahre nach der Kelterung verkauft. Aktuell im Sortiment sind die erstaunlich stabilen 1998er und 2000er. Der 1999er wird noch zurückbehalten. Der 45-Jährige macht kein Geheimnis aus dem Grund für diese überraschende Haltbarkeit. «Die Weine haben von Natur aus etwas Schwefel, das reicht für den Oxidationsschutz.» Männer, die so gegen den Strom schwimmen, erinnern an einen überlieferten Spruch: «Es gibt drei Arten von Menschen. Solche, die Eier ohne Schale essen, andere, die sie mit Schale essen. Und schliesslich jene, die Eier mit Schale und Teller verspeisen. Giannis Economou, permanently smiling, worked in Germany, Piemonte and at Château Margaux after his training in Milan. Since 1994 he has been making red wines that are designed to be bottle aged. His 1999 Sitia (Sitia, on the far eastern tip of Crete, is Giannis's place of birth and the name of the appellation), based on the local Liatiko variety, for example, has not yet been released. The 2001 has sold out. The wine itself, not the market, dictates the release date. The 2000 bore a strong resemblance to a pretty decent burgundy and the 1999 was wonderfully scented in a Nebbiolo sort of way. So much so that you bring a few bottles home and when you next drink a bottle of it, at home, it doesn’t taste the same as you remember? Often this is due to the fact that on holiday the sun is shining, you are relaxed and chilled out, the food is different and matches with its surroundings, the weather and the wine- sometimes at home it tastes different because the circumstance are different, be it the company, the weather and the food. Thus we are always slightly fearful when friends ask Gerard to give his opinion of a wine they have found on their travels, that they love and want to know what he thinks of it, as sometimes his thoughts on it are not what they want to hear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thus it was with a little trepidation that I asked Gerard to taste some Greek wines which a friend and business associate asked his opinion of…. We have known him many years, and in fact rely on his advice and expertise often and so we wanted to help but didn’t want to offend him if the wine was not as good as he hoped- we needn’t have worried.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The wines are from Greece, the island of Crete in fact and Gerard has now sampled them twice over the past 8 months and they are delicious. What is surprising is that the red wines are very light in colour and appear quite “thin” in the glass but when tasted are spicy, surprisingly full and pleasantly fruity flavoured, with a medium length of finish.
