Award-winning broadcast journalist and artist Dana King delivered three “pearls of wisdom” from her long and distinguished career to graduating students at Dominican University of California in her keynote address at the University’s commencement on May 18.

Share the credit. Know what makes you happy and you when you have achieved that. Speak the truth.

“No matter your physical, economical, emotional or intellectual differences or the degree are you are being awarded today, you all have one thing in common. That you had a vision for yourself that you have honored today,” King said. “While this accomplishment is yours and your families’, we will benefit from it. By graduating from college, you gained the future for yourself that your family may have always dreamed of. And you made a contribution to your community and your country.”

King, who received an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree during the ceremony from Dominican President Mary B. Marcy, addressed 356 undergraduate and 190 graduate students on a bright and sunny day at Forest Meadows Field.

Elizabeth Castellanos, who graduated with honors and a bachelor’s degree in biology and minors in mathematics and chemistry, received Dominican’s Outstanding Student Award.

Gerard Cabarse delivered the Senior Class address and Kathleen Smith gave the Graduate Class address.

King’s career as a broadcast journalist spans 25 years and includes network stints with ABC’s “Good Morning America Sunday” and the “CBS Morning News.” She joined San Francisco’s CBS-5 (KPIX) as news anchor in 1997. In her 15 years at KPIX, King travelled extensively for the station, bringing to her Bay Area viewers reports of struggle, survival, and perseverance from around the world.

Her travels took her to Honduras to report on the consequences of Hurricane Mitch; to Rwanda to mark the 10-year commemoration of the genocide; to Ghana to report on the inhumane treatment of women accused of witchcraft; to Afghanistan to cover post-war/pre-presidential election stories; as well as to Iraq, Albania, Turkey, and Kosovo.

King’s reporting from Honduras earned an Emmy. Her work in Rwanda received two honors from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTNDA), including the Edward R. Murrow Award in 2005. She won another Edward R. Murrow Award in 2008 for her stories from Ghana. In all, King’s reporting has earned her five Emmy awards, two Edward R. Murrow awards, two Gracie awards, and four RTDNA awards.

During her tenure, KPIX’s late-night newscasts rose to the top of the ratings. In the November 2012 sweep, “CBS 5 Eyewitness News” was the Bay Area’s most-watched 11 p.m. newscast. King left her anchor post in December 2012 to pursue her art career.

King’s art includes works of classical sculpture, charcoal drawing, and oil painting. Her work has been featured at galleries throughout the Bay Area. In 2012, King received the Jan Hart Schuyers Artistic Achievement Award in recognition of her accomplishments as a sculptor.

King’s extensive community service includes work with MarinKids, The Center for Domestic Peace, Sunny Hills Services, Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, the World Affairs Council, the Women’s Initiative, the American Red Cross, Museum of the African Diaspora, National Philanthropy Day, and the Commonwealth Club. She is a member of Dominican University of California’s School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Advisory Board.

King graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. She is the mother of two college-age children.

Commencement 2013 concluded with a special tribute to John Kennedy, who will retire on July 31 after 29 years as Dominican’s Vice President for Student Affairs.

Dominican University of California students, faculty, staff, and friends began their Earth Day celebrations early this year as they performed the Global Renewal Planetary Dance on April 19. Choreographed by theater artist Anna Halprin, the two-hour event was held on the Forest Meadows Field.

This participative event, which focused on global renewal, was the first of four dances in the Bay Area. Additional dances will be held in Berkeley on April 26, in San Francisco on May 5 and in Santos Meadows at Mt. Tamalpais on June 2.

The Planetary Dance is a participatory dance rather than a theatrical performance. At its heart is the Earth Run, a simple dance during which participants run, walk, or simply stand in a series of concentric circles and move to the sound of drums. Participants can call out dedications for a person in need of healing.

The Planetary Dance was preceded by two half-hour workshops for drummers/musicians and dancers/walkers.

Dominican’s School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences hosted the event, in partnership with the University’s Intergenerational Conversation Project. The Intergenerational Conversation Project matches Dominican students with older adults to bring about fellowship and understanding through meaningful activities.

The Dominican event was held in celebration of Earth Day 2013, and also in tribute to the career at Dominican of Arthur Scott, assistant professor of history and cultural studies, upon his retirement from full-time teaching.

“This seemed like a fitting tribute since Arthur has worked for many years to expand and deepen the study of, and reflection upon, environmental issues, and Native American cultures at Dominican and beyond,” said Nicola Pitchford, Dean of Dominican’s School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Music industry legend Sandy Pearlman was a guest instructor teaching a class titled “Curse of the Hidden Music Business” April 6 and April 13 to students in the Communications and Media Studies Department at Dominican University of California.

Pearlman is producer, creator, songwriter, manager and theorist for many of the most important bands and musical trends of the last 35 years: Blue Oyster Cult, The Clash, Black Sabbath, The Dictators, Pavlov’s Dog, Dream Syndicate. He is one of the certified creators of music known as Heavy Metal, Punk, New Wave and Goth.

As a producer, Pearlman is recipient of numerous Gold and Platinum Albums, for titles having sold some 40 million copies.

“In teaching communication and especially mass communications courses it's always great to bring in someone who has actually been a part of that process,” says Brad Van Alstyne, chair of Dominican’s Department of Communications and Media Studies. “We can always talk theory, but the real-world experience that only someone like Sandy can bring to the table is a priceless commodity for any student. He is an integral part of music history, someone who only comes along once in a lifetime.”

Pearlman may be best known as founder, writer, and producer of the band Blue Öyster Cult, and for producing records by The Clash. He also was one of the pioneers of digital music downloading before iTunes, as a co-founder of the company emusic.com. A graduate of Stony Brook University who attended Brandeis University, Pearlman’s academic appointments have included holding the Schulich Distinguished Professor Chair at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal. Pearlman is currently both a visiting faculty member at McGill and the Dean's Professor of Interdisciplinary Innovation at the University of Toronto.

The 69-year-old music icon, owner of Alpha and Omega Recording in San Rafael, also has been a guest lecturer at Stanford, Harvard and the University of California Berkeley. In 2009, he was appointed as an at-large member of the National Recording Preservation Board of the Library of Congress.

Pearlman reached out to Dominican last year after hearing about the University’s Big History program from a pair of Dominican students working at Double Rainbow, Pearlman’s favorite ice cream store in San Rafael.

A public art project designed to highlight the issue of educational equality in Marin County was installed on April 26 along a freeway underpass in San Rafael.

The “INSIDE OUT-Educational Equity in Marin” project features photographs of Dominican University of California students, local high school students, and young mothers and their children. Each 3' x 5' portrait is affixed to a freeway underpass below Interstate 580 to form a five feet high by 84 feet wide installation.

CLICK HERE TO WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEO SLIDESHOW OF INSTALLATION

"Our project, "INSIDE OUT: Facing the Gap" aims to make the faces of our invisible youth visible as well as the geographic boundaries that often divide the losses from the gains," noted Lynn Sondag, chair of Dominican’s Department of Art, Art History, and Design. Sondag and colleague Julia van der Ryn, director of Service-Learning at Dominican, worked together to develop the project.

The project is being offered as a service-learning course in which Dominican students are enrolled and the local youth and young mothers are full participants, experiencing the course material and activities alongside the college students. To prepare for the photographs, all participants are telling their social biography and interviewing each other to write a narrative statement about what education means to them.

INSIDE OUT is inspired by French street artist and TED-Prize winner JR’s call for people around the globe to turn the world “Inside Out” by sharing a photo portrait along with a statement about what they stand for. In the past year, similar projects have been created in more than 9,500 locations in the U.S. and overseas. This is the first project to be installed in Northern California.

In February, new survey data from the US Census Bureau revealed that Marin County is the most educated county in California, and among the most educated areas of the United States.

Yet, the 2012 report titled “A Portrait of Marin.” issued by the American Human Development Project and funded by the Marin Community Foundation, highlights educational disparities present in this county. These disparities include lagging educational attainment among Latinos—the fastest-growing population group in Marin and in the U.S.—which has important implications for the future workforce in Marin and across the country.

“Dominican University of California is uniquely positioned as the only four-year college in Marin County to develop and expand our role as an advocate for education justice, working with our community to increase access for all people to a full and dynamic educational experience,” van der Ryn said.
