I’ve been playing with the Palm Pre this week, and after a few days, it’s growing on me. Apple’s iPhone team should take some notes; multi-tasking on the Pre is truly differentiating, and it is executed very well. Switching from Email to GPS, or from web browsing to your music library is extremely easy and intuitive. Here are my overall impressions after a few days with the Pre. Well done to Palm! Apple iPhone OS is #onnotice.

PROS

multi-tasking is done really well. taskbar like monitoring of email, calendar, music, gps. this rules.

sprint network

camera fast, good color

turn-by-turn gps is great, standard

fast and responsive overall

itunes support

exchange support > iphone

screen is gorgeous

size when keyboard collapsed is perfect

email app is solid

physical keyboard

replaceable battery

CONS

keyboard too small and cramped, auto-correct lacking, but easily fixed with a virtual keyboard

no default loadout of ’cards’, aka apps. when you reboot, you have to launch everything one-at-a-time

usb charging slot is non-standard. on the side of the device. total junk. but the touchstone looks awesome. touchstone charger > iphone

interface slightly clunky compared to iphone, probably because we’re used to the iphone. there is a small area below the screen to navigation forward back that is funky at first, but you get used to it quickly

battery life <= iphone 3g/3g

sprint network

landscape browser is silly with keyboard extended

very few apps so far

no videocamera mode

inital startup is slow

Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman.

She spins and she sways to whatever song plays,
Without a care in the world.
And I’m sittin’ here wearin’ the weight of the world on my shoulders.
It’s been a long day and there’s still work to do,
She’s pulling at me saying “Dad I need you!
There’s a ball at the castle and I’ve been invited and I need to practice my dancin’”
“Oh please, daddy, please!”

So I’ll dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I’ll dance with Cinderella
I don’t wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone

She says he’s a nice guy and I’d be impressed
She wants to know if I approve of the dress
She says “Dad, the prom is just one week away,
And I need to practice my dancin’”
“Oh please, daddy, please!”

So I’ll dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I’ll dance with Cinderella
I don’t wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone
She will be gone.

Well, she came home today
With a ring on her hand
Just glowin’ and tellin’ us all they had planned
She says “Dad, the wedding’s still six months away
but I need to practice my dancin’”
“Oh please, daddy please!”

So I’ll dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
‘Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I’ll dance with Cinderella
I don’t wanna miss even one song,
(even one song)
Cuz all too soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be gone

Growing up in rural farmland New Jersey, an hour from both New York City and Philadelphia, you wouldn’t imagine that my youth was punctuated with rap music. It was.

And now, thanks to the wonder of the internets, I can share the songs that blasted from my Sears boombox.

My weapon of choice was the Sears LXI boombox. Detachable speakers, 5 band equalizer, line in, mic in. (note, that’s not me in the video, but it’s the box I had!)

My fascination with rap started with Run-DMC’s, “You talk too much”.

Then onto Run-DMC’s “You Be Illin”

Synthesizer magic with Whistle’s “Buggin”

Human Beatbox Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick, kick it live with “La Di Da Di”

And who can forget UTFO’s “Roxanne Roxanne”? Yea, neither can I!

And the pinnacle of synthesizer rap, “Jam On It” by Newcleus.

Of course there were many more songs, but these are a few that I would blast from my front porch, busting mad lyrics and beat boxing. This was the innocent days of rap, whose mild mannered lyrics put some rhythm in a middle-class Caucasian via power 99FM. I can’t thank them enough.

And I’ll end with some Fat Boys.

Good times.

The iPhone 3G is has me both extremely excited and surprisingly dismayed. Why?

Simple. The iPhone 3G isn’t very ‘3G’. Despite being blanketed in 3G signal, according to AT&T’s 3G coverage map, I’m consistently getting EDGE speeds on 3G, and even more frustrating, sketchy GPS location via 3G. By the way, if your iPhone can’t locate you or GPS doesn’t appear work, try turning off the 3G network. EDGE seems to find me quickly and reliably every time. Oh yeah, and as the BSTG says, “3G is a myth”.

My second, and final gripe is battery life via 3G. When you do manage to find a 3G signal with blazing broadband speeds, say goodbye to your battery life. Add PUSH email and calendar to that, and you’ll be lucky to last 2 hours. There are plenty of tips to extend the battery life, which definately work, but suprisingly contradict the value proposition the iPhone 3G promotes.

However, those two complaints aside, the iPhone is arguably the most intuitive, powerful, networked, exciting, and productive mobile device available. What’s more, Apple’s ‘Mobile Me’ service has changed the way I think about data portability and syncing; though I wish it were a bit more agnostic.

For consumers, Apple has the strongest hardware and software solution available: Music, Photos, Web Browsing, Chat, Web Authoring, Calendar, Email, Backup, Networking, Search, Application Installation, etc. Seamlessly synced and easy to use.

Just discovered the beauty of Vimeo HD. I can’t help but think that we’re on the verge of some amazing short films given the access to affordable HD cameras, editing software and hardware, and an incredible platform for publishing. I think we have yet to see the true power of the self publishing model - beyond blogs and social media sites like digg. Take a look at the others, some amazing stuff. *note: HD video not embeddable: hit this link to view in HD
Human Movement from Jordan Clarke on Vimeo.

Update. Can’t wait to join the vimeo scene with my new Canon HF100 HD camcorder!
