Things to Do in Lake County, California

Whether you’re an active adventure seeker or a more passive vacationer, Lake County has something for everyone. From hiking trails and kayaking lakes, to sipping fine wines and enjoying delicious meals, Lake County has enough to explore for any weekend trip, group gathering or romantic getaway.

Hiking Mount Konocti

Ok all you restless travelers, let’s kick off all the best things to do in Lake County with some heart-pumping activities. Just a short drive from the town of Kelseyville you’ll find the base of Mount Konocti, a potentially active, but dormant volcano with a series of trails and peaks.

Mount Konocti sits on the edge of Clear Lake, so throughout the summit you get a range of spectacular views of the lake. From the main car park you can ascend roughly 1,500 ft to the mountain’s highest point of elevation at Wright Peak (4,300ft).

The 6 mile up-and-back trail to Wright Peak is a predominantly wide gravel track that is easy to climb. There are a couple of toilets at intervals along the way, but no water, so be sure to carry enough for the trip. Depending on the time of the day the path has some sun cover, but there’s also a lot of patches that don’t, so a good hat and sunscreen are also advised.

We recommend leaving early for this hike before the sun gets too strong. Take your time soaking in the stunning views along the way and at the top. We took off a bit late and ended up hiking in the middle of the day. On the 95 degree day, it was a bit of a challenge, but making it to the top was more than worth it! You get a 360 view of the lake and surrounding hills and valleys that make up Lake County. Gorgeous!

Kayaking on the Blue Lakes

After building up a decent sweat it’s time to hit the water. The stunning Blue Lakes, just a short drive from Upper Lake, is a perfect spot to cool down and take in the lake from a kayak, stand up paddleboard or boat. Depart from the dock and cruise along the water as you soak in the tranquility. Dotted along the lake banks are areas that you can stop off to swim, rope swing or just relax in the kayak while you listen to the sounds of nature.

Aside from the winter months Lake County gets pretty warm weather year round, so spending time on the lake is an excellent activity. Whether its kayaking on Blue Lake, so boating on Clear Lake, there’s lots of options for enjoying the water when the temperatures rise.

The Lodge at Blue Lakes not only operates as a beautiful accommodation option right on the water, but it’s also a great place to rent any equipment you need to explore the lake. They have a number of lake facing rooms where you can walk straight out of your door and throw a stone to the waters edge. Doesn’t get much closer than that!

Where to Stay in Lake County

There’s no shortage of amazing places to stay in Lake County while you visit. From boutique hotels and BnBs, to unique farm stays and winery lodging. Here are some of the best places to sleep in Lake County.

Tallman Hotel

This historic boutique hotel is located in the quaint little town of Upper Lake. The Tallman Hotel is on Main Street, a super cute street that looks like the set of an old Western movie. There are a couple of shops that add to that small town charm.

Along with beautiful rooms and a very hospitable staff, there were two stand out features of the Tallman Hotel. The first are the traditional private Japanese ofuro soaking tubs located on private patios in the four garden rooms. These beautifully crafted wooden tubs are heated to around 105F and are perfect for relaxing in with a glass of wine after a long day exploring.

The second is the incredible onsite restaurant, the Blue Wing Saloon. Open for lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, the Blue Wing Saloon has a wide variety of delicious meals on the menu. The Tallman Hotel also has a number of sustainability initiatives that make this a great eco option when choosing accommodation in Lake County. Along with renewable solar energy, electric vehicle charging and a sustainable reuse policy, Tallman Hotel also has a GeoExchange heating and cooling system that helps significantly reduce energy use.

Peace and Plenty Farm

This organic farm, located just outside of Kelseyville center, has it all! Aside from being the largest saffron producer in North America, Peace and Plenty also has an organic farm stand, beautiful event spaces and a number of different accommodation options to choose from.

During our time at Peace and Plenty we stayed in the retrofitted 1968 Airstream, which is fully equipped with its own composting toilet, shower and private deck area that overlooks the vineyards. To say it was perfect would be an understatement, as this nostalgic throwback to traveling around in a self contained Airstream, while being off the grid on an organic farm, couldn’t suit our travel style and lifestyle more.

While staying at the property you can also take advantage of the beautiful farm and all it has to offer. Take a farm tour to check out the saffron, lavender and organic vegetables growing. Feed the chickens and watch them potter around as they cluck away. Or visit the farmstand where you can purchase products straight from the property like saffron lemonade, saffron popsicles or various other local items.

Six Sigma Ranch

Another great option for accommodation and activities in Lake County is a visit to Six Sigma Ranch. The main draw to this family run, 4300-acre ranch is the wine and food, but they also offer lodging and a range of trail options for visitors to enjoy.

Come for the wine and ranch to table dinners (detailed in this article), but Club Members can also take advantage of complimentary overnight parking for RVs and trailers. Enjoy a night under the stars as you stay right on the ranch itself, which makes it perfect if you plan on knocking back a couple of extra bottles of wine.

For the active travelers there’s also world class mountain biking trails at Six Sigma ranch that can be taken advantage of by Club Members. Open from 9am-4pm there are a number of trails to explore. Club Members can also bring up to two non-members on the trails if you want to bring along some friends.

Guyana might be unknown to a lot of the world, but that’s all changing fast! With some recent tourism pushes, Guyana is really starting to make its mark on the world as a premium destination for adventure travel. And after spending 10 days adventuring around the rugged south, we can see exactly why.

It had been a long time since such a strong sense of adventure and excitement had ran through my veins. Guyana revitalized my passion for exploring the unknown and getting off the usual tourist track. So sit back, strap in and get ready for one hell of a trip.

Starting the Guyana Adventure Travel

The adventure started as soon as we touch down at Georgetown International Airport and made our way out to the small propeller plane at Eugene F. Correia International Airport. We boarded an hour long flight with Trans Guyana Airways southwest to Lethem, a small town that borders Brazil, where there’s little more than an airstrip, a few hotels and some empty looking shops.

It’s on our flight from Georgetown that we met Ian, who is the owner and organizer of Bushmasters, an extreme adventure tour company that specializes in survival training and awesome times. Over the next six days Ian would be taking six professional travel bloggers across the wild savannah of southern Guyana.

Note: We regret to inform everyone about the sad and unexpected passing of Ian Craddock in July 2020. Ian died doing what he loved, adventuring in Guyana, and will forever be remembered for providing so much joy and adventure to so many. May he continue to be exploring and pushing the limits in his next adventure. We hope this post can showcase even just a little bit of his amazing spirit. Rest easy legend!

Bushmaster Tours in Guyana

Aside from being an absolute survival master, Ian is a real character. Years of service in the British Special Forces has prepared him for just about any challenge in life. For Ian, there’s no such thing as it can’t be done, and his wild explorations around Guyana are proof of that.

We arrived at Ian’s house after dropping off our gear at the Takutu Hotel in Lethem. It was a short drive from the airport, yet even in that drive we got a sense for just how remote and isolated this part of the world is. Paved roads are replaced with red, dusty streets. There are a handful of hotels to stay at, but other than a jumping off point for jungle and savannah exploration, there doesn’t seem to be a lot to do in Lethem.

Ian’s house was like an adult adventure playground. Outside in the yard there were four ATVs (quad bikes), along with two 4×4 vehicles. Inside there was an authentic 6ft Amerindian bow and arrow resting against the couch. In one of the rooms a jaguar pelt, from one of the indigenous villages, was mounted on the wall.

Across the room there are piles of camping and survival gear spread out everywhere. As I scanned the room my eyes found the stack of machetes sitting on a small table, each one in a leather sheath with a small branded logo of Bushmaster on the front side. Everything in this room shouted adventure, and I could barely contain my excitement for the trip to start.

Ian gathered us all together in the room to explain the next steps. He ran us through all the gear we needed to pack in our rucksacks. We were given a hammock with built in mosquito net, a hammock rain cover, light blanket, foldable chair, canteen, spoon and eating containers. We also got a 3L camelback, our food provisions, dry bags to keep everything in, and of course, a machete!

Preparing for the Adventure

The next day we woke up early, eager to start our adventure tour in Guyana! After a quick breakfast at the Takutu Hotel we grabbed our rucksacks and headed over to Ian’s to collect the vehicles. The four ATVs were all lined up in a row, tanks full and ready to hit the road.

Terry, Frankie and Lionel, three local Guyanese who work for Ian, were busy loading up the 4x4s with all our equipment. Water tanks, tools, inflatable kayaks, medical kits, generator and all the other things we were going to need to survive for a few nights. Once the vehicles are ready to go, it was a concise explanation from Ian about the plan and we were off.

This is Ian’s style as a tour organizer. He is energetic, funny, full of crazy stories and knows his stuff. He doesn’t give you an answer if he doesn’t know it. And when he does, he only likes to say it once, and he does it with a precision and conciseness of a skilled expert in the survival field. He also has an amazing ability to teach you how to do something, without holding your hand throughout the process. It was this type of unguided adventure travel that I’d been missing after so many years on the road.

ATV and 4×4 Adventure

We hit the road with pace! The four ATVs led the charge at the front of the convoy, with Ian directing first, followed by two of us and then Lionel at the back. Behind him the two 4x4s were driven by others on the trip, with Frankie and Terry each manning one of the vehicles to ensure everyone was on track. I was on the first round of ATV driving and had an absolute blast. We bumped around on the trails, trying to avoid large potholes and termite mounds that had hardened like concrete in the sun.

As I rounded a corner I slammed down the accelerator and a sudden burst of speed erupted from the ATV. The back tires slid out as I continued to crank the handlebars to the right and held the accelerator down. Just as the ATV started to slide out of control I let go of the accelerator, straightened up, hit the gear up button and burst off down the trail, leaving a trail of red dust in my path.

We approached a river and slowed down to assess the level of water and our ability to cross it. Ian took a calculated look and said we were good to go, so he sent the 4x4s across first and then we hit the water with speed and determination to make it across.

On the first day of adventuring we rode 105km out of town and into the savannah. Day two we rode 101km, with all of us rotating between driving the ATVs and 4x4s. During this time we crossed rivers, hammered down dusty red roads, bumped across the savannah and carved a path through the very sparse terrain of southern Guyana.

On a couple of occasions we passed small shops and used this an opportunity to fuel up on an ice cold beers to wash out the dust. At one shop there was a large bottle of murky white liquid being sold in old Coke bottles. After an inquiry we found out it was a bottle full of cow fat! Our shocked faces were met with equally shocked expressions from the locals at the thought that we’re not using large bottles of cow fat regularly in the kitchen.

Over the next few days we continued along the trails. Six riders, over 350km and only two crashes. Naturally I was one of them. After getting a little too confident on the trails I decided to take the ATV off road and hammer through the uncharted savannah. As I bumped along, trying to avoid 3 foot tall termite mounds, my vision was blurred through the long grass, obscuring the obstacles in my way.

I looked to my right to see the convoy of vehicles running along the trail and then directed my attention back to the savannah just in time to see that I was heading straight towards a fallen tree. I had a split second to brace myself before the ATV hit the tree at 50km an hour and I was bucked from the seat. Momentarily, I held onto the handlebars, thinking I was going to land it, before I was ripped from the vehicle and thrown into the air.

I tried to tuck and roll mid flight and managed to land on my shoulder, before spinning onto my back and sliding several feet though the padded long grass. The spectacle ended with my limbs catching up to my body, me on my back and my legs in the air. From the microphone in my ear I heard someone call out, ‘man down!’. I took a moment to compose myself, before standing up and assessing the damage. A banged up elbow, but thankfully I was fine. I jumped back on the ATV, rejoined the track bashfully and decided to stick to the trail in the future.

Camping Under the Stars

After each day of riding we established a camp under the stars along the river. On the first day Ian delivered a safety instruction on machete use, before setting us free onto the barren landscape to find a tree and hang our hammocks. Having this complete independence was one of the best parts of this trip. Ian gave just the right amount of instruction, before letting us fend for ourselves like real life jungle adventurers.

As each of us found a suitable area, we chopped and slashed our way to a clearing and strung up our hammocks for the night. After getting our bedding organized we returned to the communal camp area where Ian already had a fire going. After a quick jump in the river, to clean our clothes and wash off the dust, we spent the night sitting around the fire, cooking up our camp meals and exchanging stories underneath the stars. With no light pollution whatsoever, and only a slither of a moon, the stars were incredibly bright.

Where we slept was not your average camp spot. There were no facilities or other established areas. It was just us and the wild. Ian told us that we were among only a dozen other people who had stayed near this spot before, and they were all just from his previous trips. After swapping a few more stories we retreated back to the hammocks to avoid the mosquitos and to try and get some sleep.

From my hammock I could see the stars through the black mosquito net mesh that protected my hammock from an army of mosquitos that awaited my fresh blood. Even through the mesh the stars shone bright enough to light up the ground below. The faint light of my iPhone illuminated my little cocoon bed for the night, as a soft breeze slowly swung my hanging hammock.

Even though I was stripped down to my underwear it was still boiling and I could feel the beads of sweat dripping down my forehead, temporarily resting on my eyebrows and creating a small pool of water, before dropping down into my eyes. I felt like I was never going to get to sleep in this heat, but before I knew it the vibrant colors of a savannah sunrise are awakening me from my hammock.

Saddle Mountain Ranch Guyana

After a few days on the trails we arrived at Saddle Mountain, where the real ranching adventures begun. Situated deep in southern Rupununi, Saddle Mountain Ranch is any aspiring cowboy’s dream. Operating as an active ranch since 1990, Tommy and Joan, have made their own little slice of paradise out in the middle of nowhere in Guyana.

Named after a nearby mountain that looks like a horses saddle, Saddle Mountain ranch is full of exciting adventures, delicious home cooked meals, stunning landscapes and plenty of opportunity to immerse yourself within authentic Guyanese ranching life.

This simple, yet beautiful, homestead is surrounded by miles and miles of open savannah, with the property itself enclosed between luscious mango trees. There are goats, chickens and all kinds of Guyana wildlife that can be found on the ranch. There’s even the rare spotting of a jaguar. If you make it to Saddle Mountain Ranch, be sure to ask Joan about her story fighting off a jaguar with a machete. The rooms are simple and open aired, making the afternoon breeze a very much welcome feeling after a sweltering day. Fortunately there aren’t as many bugs here, so you can leave your window open and catch a breeze during the night.

Riding a Horse at Saddle Mountain Ranch

As an active ranch, Saddle Mountain Ranch has plenty of horses that get used on a daily basis to assist with the work duties. While leisurely horse riding is not an activity these horses usually encounter, it must be a welcome break from the demands of ranch life that sees them out herding cattle across the savannah.

For our horse riding experience we got up early to make the most of the cooler temperatures of dawn. After the local crew saddled up the horses we received a crash course in handling and riding, but the real learning came from just doing. It had been at least 20 years since I’d last straddled a horse, and I was pretty sure my horse knew it. I awkwardly tried to synchronize my erratic jolting with the horse’s trotting, but end up bouncing around so much I thought I was about to fall off.

After half an hour, a numb backside and plenty of gorgeous views, I was finally starting to get the hang of it a little more. I tried less to find the rhythm and instead just let the horse jolt me into a rhythm. Walking was easy, trotting was hard, but cantering was much simpler, as the smooth gait of the horse made it easier to work with.

The only problem with cantering is that it meant the horse was now going a lot faster! I tried to hold on, with one hand on the ropes and the other holding onto the saddle for dear life. It was only towards the end of my third horse riding session that I realized the more I relaxed, the easier it was to ride.

My final cantering moment down the home stretch was the real highlight of my career as a horse rider. My horse, finally understanding my lack of abilities, gracefully gliding down the track; me, one handed holding onto the ropes, furiously swinging my hat in the air like a real cowboy. It felt pretty damn cool!

Ranching Activities

One of the biggest draws to Saddle Mountain Ranch is the opportunity to experience authentic Guyanese ranching life at its best. And while you’re there you’ll be able to learn from the best, because at the ranch you’re amongst cowboy royalty with Tommy and Judah.

Tommy, the former Rodeo King of Guyana, has a long history of being involved in movie productions and any cowboy / Western related content that was filmed in Guyana. With that type of pedigree it’s no surprise that Judah, his son, is currently a two time Rodeo King of Guyana himself. Not only that, but Tommy’s daughter is also a legendary barrel racer.

Ranching activities start off by learning how to throw a lasso, with a lesson in technique, as well as some attempts on a target. Don’t worry if you end up in a tangled mess of rope, or trip yourself up, we were doing plenty of that. If you’re up for it, you can take your latest skill into the corral, and test out your talents on a real life moving target.

As part of an active ranch, the herd occasionally requires some maintenance and looking after. One of these jobs is to brand the calves and to castrate the bulls. Please note that this is not a staged activity put on to appease tourists. This is just one of many everyday ranch activities that help support the livelihood of the whole ranch. Some people may feel a little uneasy about the idea of branding calves, but every person is free to choose how they want to participate.

Whether you show up at the ranch or not, these are activities are performed daily in order to maintain the herd and support the business. For anyone who considers this an act of cruelty, I’d only ask you to compare that to the lives of cattle in other parts of the world. One act of branding on a thick cow hide, ensures this cow can live in the open savannah, free from antibiotics, pesticides and enclosures. This is the real free range.

Swimming in the Creek and Eating Delicious Food

After a long day of ranching there’s nothing better than taking a short walk down to the waterhole to take a refreshing swim. Forget changing your clothes, just walk down in your filthy, sweaty clothes and jump straight into the cold water. We all took a bar of soap down and scrubbed our clothes while wearing them, before splashing about in the water and jumping off the overhanging palm tree.

After cleansing ourselves from a hard day on the ranch, that home cooked meal from Joan felt so rewarding to tuck into. Casserole, mashed potatoes, rice, beans, veggies and so much more delicious food. If you’re a meat eater you can eat the beef straight off the ranch, where it doesn’t get more sustainable than that. Everyday we were on the ranch Joan and the kitchen crew whipped up some amazing food. There was a selection of fishes, chicken and beef, always accompanied by huge platters of sides and ice cold jugs of fresh lemonade and fruit juices.

Kayaking on the Takutu River

After five days of hardcore adventure travel in Guyana, we didn’t think this trip could get anyone more jam packed until we finished the trip with a kayak down the Takutu River. On the last day we traveled on the vehicles out to a section of the Takutu River, which works as the border between Guyana and Brazil.

Even though we were running out of time, Ian wanted to give us a taste of the kayaking trips he offers. We only hit the water for a few hours, but usually Ian offers multi-day, even multi-week, trips that venture deep into the pristine rainforest and jungle.

The ATVs and 4x4s stopped at a spot along the river and we unloaded the inflatable kayaks. After a brief, yet concise, demonstration we set off on preparing our kayak. We lugged them down to the river and docked them along the bank. Across the width of the river we could see Brazil, so Chris and I took this opportunity to swim across to the other side for a laugh.

After launching our kayaks onto the river we paddled along for the next couple of hours, stopping a couple of times along sand banks to take in the scenery and chat with local fisherman from both sides of the river. Even in these few hours we got a sense of how awesome an adventure along the rivers would be.

Picture this, each night, deflating the kayak, walking into the jungle to set up camp for the night, experiencing the real jungle, before doing it all again the next day. It’s on those sorts of trips that Ian told us we’d be likely to encounter Guyana wildlife like anacondas, jaguars, pumas, ocelots and the other cat species found in the jungle.

After deflating the kayaks and jumping on the bikes for an hour we arrived back in Lethem. Dusty, dirty but definitely not defeated, we sat around at the Takutu Hotel with a cold beer and reflected on what an incredible six days we just had.

Between six professional travelers and bloggers, we all agreed that this trip was one of the most authentic adventure experiences we’d had in a long time. No fancy hotels or meals, no private transport, no guides holding your hands, just pure exploration like the old days. So, who’s ready for an adventure?

Traveling to Guyana

Located in the northeast corner of South America, Guyana is a little harder to get to than other more popular hotspots on the continent, but once you’re there it’s definitely worth it. Traveling overland to Guyana is difficult, as it borders Venezuela to the left, which isn’t the safest country to travel through at the moment. To the east and south it borders Brazil and Suriname, but the easiest way to enter Guyana is by air.

Cheap flights to Guyana can be found if you book ahead of time, with Caribbean Airlines being the major airline that flies into Georgetown. A lot of flights to Guyana from the US go through New York or connect through Florida on your way past other Caribbean countries.

Guyana Packing List

The key to adventuring in Guyana is to pack light, as you’re often going to be carrying a lot of your gear with you. Lightweight, quick dry clothes are key, as well as things that are going to protect you from the elements and bugs. Here’s a list of our top things to pack for Guyana adventure travel.

Long sleeved microfibre top – I wore this everyday, literally! The long sleeve is key, as it keeps the sun off you during those long days on the ATV and horses. It’s also good to defend yourself against the bugs.

Brim hat – Another thing to protect your head and face from the intense sun! It’s absolutely brutal out there, and without a good hat you’re gonna get burnt.

Buff – When you’re tearing up the track on the ATV you’ll need something to cover your mouth. A scarf or Buff works great. It also keeps the sun off your face.

Hiking boots – For this trip they weren’t super essential, but you will need them if you go deeper into the jungle and do more trekking.

LifeStraw – We take our LifeStraws Go bottles absolutely everywhere, because when you’re out in the middle of nowhere, the one thing you need to survive is safe drinking water!

Sunglasses – Get yourself a good pair of sunglasses, because between the dust and the sun you’re going to need eye protection. We always recommend SunGod glasses, because they’re basically indestructible. And believe us, we’ve put them to the test!

Traveling to Estonia is perfect for all types of outdoor lovers. Slower paced travelers will adore the incredibly well maintained nature preserves throughout the country. Adrenaline junkies have a plethora of adventure activities to get their heart racing. But no matter the pace, every traveler will enjoy getting a deeper sense of Estonia’s people. Especially how their unique history has played a part in preserving the local culture, which they so passionately enjoy showing off to their guests.

Although traveling through Estonia would be fantastic with any mode of transportation, we highly recommend renting a car, as some of the highlights were really far off the beaten track. Not only does a car allow you to reach the more rural attractions, but it also gives you the freedom to spontaneously venture off the main road to hidden spots along the way. As a jumping off point, the following here are our favorite highlights from our weeklong Estonia road trip. We zipped through these places in just 5 days, but given the time we’d recommend slowing down a bit to have some more down time.

Estonia Road Trip Day 1

Balloon Tallinn

We kicked off our wild Estonia travel itinerary with an adrenaline-pumping balloon ride that jolted our sleepy selves wide-awake. Balloon Tallinn offers rides in their helium balloon that rises 120 meters into the air, giving you the perfect view of Tallinn city and the Baltic Sea. 120 meters might not sound high from the ground, but once we started going up it became apparent just how far we were going. We’re not the biggest fan of heights, so after a few minutes into our ride Jules and I were already getting jumpy. We asked the guide if we were at the top yet, to which he replied “no, we’re only one third up.” Yikes!

Once you get settled at the top you start to forget about the height and start enjoying the views. From the balloon you overlook the Baltic Sea and can see the historical buildings of Old Town in the distance. It’s pretty windy and cold up top, but they give you a blanket to stay warm. For those that are interested in a hot air balloon ride, this experience is the perfect precursor because it isn’t quite as scary. Even for the daredevils, it’s definitely worth a peek to see Tallinn from above and only takes about 15 minutes for the whole ride.

Bear Watching

One of the best parts of traveling in Estonia is that there is so much wilderness that surrounds you. And wilderness means plenty of space for wild animals like bears, moose, lynxes, boars and the odd wolverine. With this in mind we decided to head into the forest for a chance to spot some of Estonia’s finest wild animals!

We met our guide in Alutaguse, located in northeast Estonia, and from a small roadside stop walked about a mile to our official bear watching hut. The shelter is a basic wooden hut with bunk beds, sleeping bags and a compost toilet. Although we were told that bears are mostly likely to come out around 8:30pm, we spotted our first one around 7pm when it was still light out. We were in absolute awe of this huge, magnificent animal lumbering around the trees that we were frozen, unable to look away.

Unfortunately that meant we failed to capture any photo or videos of the bear, but believe us, they’re out there. We also saw bears later in the evening around 9:30pm, but the dim lighting meant we could only make out an outline of the animals. We did see other animals, including the local raccoon dogs and, we think, a wolverine, which is very rare!

The whole bear watching process felt very meditative, with nothing to do but sit and look out into the gorgeous forest ahead. It was a perfect time to disconnect from our devices and enjoy the serenity of the Estonian nature.

Where to Stay

Because bear watching is best at nightfall, you have to sleep in the hut overnight. It’s simple living, but it does the job for a night. Trust us, you don’t want to go trekking back to your car at night, risking seeing the bears a bit too close up.

Where to Eat

Bring your own food to the hut for dinner and an early breakfast the next morning. It’s important not to bring alcohol, smoke cigarettes or walk around the area because the scent can deter the bears.

Day 2

Kivioli Adventure Center Zipline

About 90mins west of Tallinn is the Kivioli Adventure Center. This ski and snowboard resort is in a prime position during the winter, but also boasts a number of adventure activities during other seasons. One of those activities is Estonia’s longest zipline, which runs 600 meters in length and reaches speeds of up to 80 km/hr. Although the ride only lasts about 40 seconds, it is a real rush. It’s a bit daunting standing at the platform looking out over the drop. But you won’t find a better view than looking out over one of the highest points in Estonia. The adventure center also offers a quad bike track and motocross trails.

Where to Eat

The Hill Café on site has delicious food if you work up an appetite after your adrenaline rush. During the winter when the spot has snow you can ski or board all day, sip beers at night and then sleep at the hostel that is only a 1 minute walk from the center.

Heinrich Lukk’s Sleddog Center

One of the most unique experiences during our Estonia trip was hanging out with the Alaskan Malamute’s at Heinrich Lukk’s Sleddog Center, about half an hour from the city of Tartu. Dog sledding in Estonia was definitely at the top of our list of adventure activities and we not disappointed. The dogs, which look more like wolves than your average house dog, can be a bit intimidating at first. Upon driving up to the center, the dogs went nuts barking and jumping around. And we soon understood why, they love to get out and run! Whenever their owner (and alpha dog) Heinrich brings out the sleds, the dogs know it’s their chance to get out and move, so they bark like mad yelling “Pick me! Pick me!”

Normally the sled dogs pull snow-sleds, but in the warmer months they are hooked up to a cart with wheels to pull guests along trails. Heinrich picks the lineup, 8 dogs per cart matched in pairs based off strength and endurance. You lead the dogs to the cart and attach their harnesses, which is an interesting task in itself to restrain the energy of the dogs. After you’re all buckled up, you lift up the break and the dogs are off! With an incredible spurt of energy the cart goes flying down the trails, zooming past the Estonian forest. After some time the dogs slow down and take periodic breaks to rest and drink water. By the end the pups are tuckered out and very happy to give sleepy cuddles and kisses when returning to the kennel. Watching Heinrich’s affection for these dogs and his passion for the sport made the whole experience feel like we were part of an age old tradition native to Estonia.

Where to Eat

Pahupidi Kohvik is a vegan cafe in Tartu has a great plant-based selection including some delicious gluten-free beers and yummy desserts.

Where to Stay

Peramaa Puhkekeskus is a beautiful wooden house set in a gorgeous rural area of Estonia. It’s the perfect place to stay after an evening of dogsledding. With several smoke saunas on site and a beautiful lake in the middle of the property, it’s definitely worth setting aside some time to enjoy the serene setting.

Day 3

Jarvselja Forest

Driving through the rural roads of Estonia, you’ll start to feel like you’ve left civilization and are driving in an endless sea of forest. Being surrounded by nature it can be easy to forget to get out and actually enjoy it. There’s no better place to do that than the Jarvselja Forest. This nature reserve is a primeval forest, meaning it has grown without human interference all throughout history to the present day. There are a number of hiking trails you can explore, walking on wooden planks lifted above the ground so as to not disturb the growth. The Jarvselja is home to some of Estonia’s tallest and oldest trees, including the 360 year Kuningamänd pine tree.

The Jarvselja is also home to SMEAR, the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations. During our visit we were accompanied by a local scientist who studies the reserve ecosystem, giving us invaluable information about the forest and all it’s inhabitants.

Kayak Vohandu River with Matkajuht Osauhing

Compared to dogsledding and bear watching, kayaking may not seem like the most unique activity offered in Estonia, but wait till you check out the Vohandu River. This river flowing through southeast Estonia is incredibly picturesque. The calm water flows under wooden bridges and past small farmhouses, past limestone rock walls and under canopies of trees. But don’t get too relaxed, because just as you start to kick back and admire your surroundings, you’ll need to grab that oar and navigate through some small rapids! The whole trip lasts about 2 hours and you do get a bit wet. Overall it was a perfect combination of relaxation, thrill and a bit of exercise, all in a serene setting.

Where to Eat

Mooste Viinavabrik – This vodka distillery is a great place to stop for lunch after your hike. The historical building has an event hall, restaurant and even accommodation if you’d like to stay over.

Where to Stay

Taevaskoja Turismi- ja Puhkekeskus: This beautiful inn next to the forest is a gorgeous place to rest and explore after a big day kayaking. They have food on site so you can easily grab dinner or breakfast the next morning.

Day 4

Kicksledding in the Forest

When we first heard about kicksledding, we couldn’t figure out what it was. There was no snow on the ground, so we knew it wouldn’t be sledding. It was described to us as a bicycle with no seat, which was no less confusing. When the day finally came, we finally figured out what we were doing… riding off-road scooters through the forest! Using designated trails, we zipped through the trees, past an old town abandoned after WWII and down to the Ahja River.

Along the trails you also go past the famous Heaven’s Hall, an important spiritual site for ancient Estonian folklore. Legend has it that anyone who dares to enter the cave will either go insane or blind. We’re not sure about all that, but the incredible limestone walls along the river are truly spellbinding. You can opt for a 5km or 7km trip, but don’t let the scooters fool you. This isn’t a walk in the park. Uphill inclines will give your thighs a workout and the downhill will have you soaring down the paths. For those that find hiking a bit boring, you’ll love this extra dose of adventure.

Mooska Farm Smoke Sauna

While we really enjoyed every activity we participated in during our road trip through Estonia, the our time at Mooska Farm Smoke Sauna was definitely the most memorable. Forget everything you know about saunas, this is a far cry from the steam room at your local gym. In Estonia, people take saunas very seriously. Perhaps no one more than our gracious host, Eda Veeroja. After all, she spent a 10 years working to get the Estonia smoke sauna added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

We did half a day in the traditional black smoke sauna, which get its name from the lack of chimney causing the smoke to circulate through the room, and the experience is not for the faint hearted. Firstly, you strip down to your birthday suit, jump into a 100+ degree room and get whisked with dried bundles of leaves. There are salt and honey scrubs, chanting and lots more!

If you’re really adventurous you can jump into a freezing cold lake in the middle of the property to jumpstart your system. The whole experience was one of a kind and gave us a much deeper understanding of the local history and culture. Estonian black saunas have been central to local life for centuries, used to mark special occasions like weddings, deaths and the end of the year. At the end of the ceremony we gave thanks to our bodies, to the sauna and let go of something negative we’ve been holding onto. We left feeling lighter, possibly because we just sweated a few kilos, and much more connected to Estonian culture.

Where to Eat

Eda and her husband graciously offer dinner to guests after an evening in the sauna. There’s nothing better than a hot home cooked meal and some local cider to replenish your nutrients after the sauna.

Where to Stay

Greete Motell is a gorgeous hotel easily accessible from the highway. The classic wooden rooms are a fantastic way to rest your bones and the breakfast buffet is great to fill up before a big day ahead.

Day 5

Bog Hike

The last stop on our Estonia holiday was an explore through Soomaa National park and a hike in the Toonoja bog. Not sure what a bog is? Neither did we! But we planned the adventure anyway and found ourselves hiking through a sort of swampy wetland that spans out as far as the eye can see. Because of the water underneath the thin soil feels like a massive sponge and it’s easy to sink through the ground, ending up knee deep in the bog.

Our guides offered us bog shoes, similar to snow shoes, that distributed our weight to keep from sinking in. Those proved to be tricky though and we had some funny moments tripping and getting a face full of bog moss. But beside our less than graceful falls, we had a fantastic time exploring the bog. Although the terrain stays pretty much the same throughout the hike, there is a plethora of plants and wildlife to explore. A highlight was coming across the remnants of a plane crash from WWII that our guides had heard was somewhere in the bog but had never seen it before. The local bogs play a bigger role than just a beautiful place to hike, however. To many Estonians they are spiritual locations. The moss and plants have medicinal properties, which was especially helpful when a blister formed from my boots.

As we circled back to the entrance of the bog, we kicked off our bog shoes and hiked through the much firmer forest area, picking berries off the vine and nibbling on them on the way. As our road trip came to the close, we thanked our guides and hopped in the car to head back to Tallinn. The entire trip was jam packed with activities and we finally had a moment to digest our experiences. From the balloon ride to the bog hike, we felt like we truly covered Estonia from top to bottom.

Getting to Costa Rica

Getting to Costa Rica is relatively easy, with several international airlines offering direct flights to the country’s two major airports: Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose and Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia. From North America, it takes around 5-7 hours to reach Costa Rica, while flights from Europe take around 12-14 hours with a layover.

Once you arrive in Costa Rica, there are several options for getting around, including taxis, buses, and rental cars. However, it’s important to note that driving in Costa Rica can be challenging due to narrow, winding roads and unpredictable driving conditions. It’s recommended that visitors rely on a professional driver or guided tours to explore the country. One trip in particular that we’d recommend a driver for is traveling from Manuel Antonio to San Jose, where you have a number of options to choose from depending on your budget and preferred method of transport.

Playa Grande

ROAM Luggage Review

I know this sounds a little travel nerdy, but we were super excited to road test our new ROAM luggage on our Peru trip. The last time we were in Peru, back in 2012, we were your typical backpackers; lugging around 80L backpacking bags as we lived for months on whatever we could jam into our packs.

Now, after a decade of backpacking bags, we finally had a premium set of luggage to help ease our travel experience. We were super pumped to roll out the luggage and give it a test. Here’s our three part review of our ROAM luggage experience.

Design

Before we jump into anything let’s begin with the design. Our journey starts on the ROAM website as you have a number of different luggage sizes to choose from. There are two types of carry on bags, where one has an added expansion zip that takes it from 37L to 51L capacity. Equally for the check in bags you have the option to make it expandable, taking the bag from 60L to 86L.

Once you’ve settled on your size it’s time for the fun part, customization! The best part about ROAM luggage is that they are incredibly customizable. There are 7 different elements that you can choose colors for, with multiple color options in each element. This allows you to literally make thousands of different combinations to suit your style.

Choose the front shell, back shell, zipper, binding, wheels, carry handles and monogram patch as you create a unique ROAM design. Another great function is the 3D design that changes in real time to reflect your design choices. Swapping colors is as easy as a click of a button, as you try all the different combinations until you find one that speaks to you.

Functionality

Along with amazing customization, ROAM also has a number of great features that make their luggage elite for traveling. Each bag comes equipped with polycarbonate outer shells, making the bag super strong and sturdy when transporting your valuables inside.

There’s also a telescoping handle that gives you two different heights to extend to, ball bearing wheels for a smooth journey, a water repellent zipper and a TSA approved lock. On the inside there is fabric lining and two compression boards and straps to lock down each compartment side of the luggage. This is perfect for when you need to open your bag and don’t want all your contents spilling out in the process.

In Practice

So with our brand new, fully customized The Large Carry-On (the expandable version) ordered and packed it was time to road test them. As we rolled into San Francisco International airport we could feel the smooth ride of the bag right up until we checked our expanded carry ons. Once the bags were expanded it was super roomy and it was enough to carry everything we needed for two weeks in Peru.

Being so lightweight and compact meant it was easy to transport them from taxis to our accommodation, as well we wheel them through the streets when needed. They even held up great with the cobblestone streets of Cusco as we rolled around town when leaving our accommodation and deciding to do a little more sightseeing (aka shopping).

Overall our ROAM ‘The Large Carry-On’ luggage was excellent for our trip to Peru. It couldn’t have been put through a more thorough road test and we’re so stoked to finally have a premium piece of luggage to travel with.
