Filming months before the Olympics and continuing the journey from Beijing and back, the 61-minute documentary is the only non-American film nominated at this year’s American Black Film Festival.

It is one of three films nominated in the documentary category at the festival, which is slated from June 24-27 in Miami Beach, Florida.

Director Garcia-Guereta strives to find the answer to Jamaican athletes’ speed in the film and in the process, beautifully captures the spirit and zeal of Jamaicans.

A post on Attorney Street pointed me to the BBC´s coverage of the Africa Fashion Week 2009 and at the same time reminded me that I haven´t posted anything about Caribbean Fashion Week 2009 so far.

Well, here we go: photographers Giovanni Powell and Gladstone Taylor have quite a few shots of CFW09 in their portfolios. It´s kind of sad though that they haven´t added any information about the collections shown on their pictures. I´d be especially interested in the designer of the very simple and clean business women collection you see e.g. here. Anybody out there who knows?

Btw: More fashion stuff will follow this week, as I´ll be heading to Berlin Fashion Week which will e.g. see the homecoming of the Bread & Butter trade show. Stay tuned. Pssst: We might even give you a sneak preview of the new seen. collection.

Yesterday, our Berlin-based Bundes-Brazilerian friend Daniel Haaksman dropped his new EP called “Gostoso” on vinyl. It follows the highly acclaimed “Who´s Afraid of Rio” EP. As Daniel is one of those no-bullshit guys and the tunes are already played by e.g. the Crookers, Sinden, Fake Blood, Radioclit, Riva Starr, DJ Yoda, Mixhell and Tim Turbo, I will just repost the original product information to give you an idea of how Gostoso sounds like:

The EP kicks off with Haaksman bringing baile funk to the playground, introducing the 2nd generation of baile funk MCs. “Kid Conga“ features MC Miltinho on the mike, the son of baile funk legend MC Batata, singing a nursery rhyme over a heavy, tropical beat, accompanied by an arpeggio that is resembling North Eastern Brasilian forro melodies. „Senta Senta Mais Uma Vez” („Senta Senta once more“) is Haaksman’s revisit to the anthemic „Senta Senta“ track from his „Who’s Afraid Of Rio?“ EP which received massive DJ rotation all over the globe. In its revisited mix, the techno side of baile funk finds its shape.

The B-Side of the EP opens with „Pobum Coco“, Haaksman’s bowing down to Rio’s love affair with Miami Bass. With a heavy 808 beat, „Pobum Coco“ tops off with a Tropicalia guitar line to get those big booties going. The polka-bass tune is followed by Rio’s MC queen Tati Quebra Barraco, shouting out on “Jesus” over a twisted funk synth and 808 snare rolls.

The digital release is to follow on July 5th. We hand out “Pobum Coco” upfront. Thanks, Daniel, and greetings to Rio!

Maxi King queens and water gunmen. It’s Tim Turbo Thursday!

Wow, I had a blasting weekend. It started with playing together with Danny Scrilla and Ron Foto in Cologne on Friday. And that was already a mad party. On Saturday, we were all recovering and seriously hanging over in some middle eastern food place, when DJ Beware called and offered me to fill in for him on his gig in Bielefeld, because he was having some serious pain in his back. So me and Danny also played in Bielefeld on Saturday and had a another mad night full of lazers!

Speaking of DJ Beware: This time it’s the truth and nothing but the truth: I will fire off some exclusive Bayern Funky tunes by Danny and some of my own new remixes on Beware’s FM4 Unlimited show on Austria’s number one radio station today between 02:00 and 03:00 PM CET. Tune in on www.fm4.at!
