Hi. I’m new around these pixels… My name is Mike and I’m a doodler. I love to doodle. I’ve been doodling as long as I could wrap my opposable thumb around a crayon. In fact, one of my earliest memories that I can rethink is of me and my dad trading doodles in church. Over the droning voices and minor chords, he would draw the plane from my favorite book, “Fly Away” and I would doodle it back to him.

We’d draw helicopters, rocket ships, aliens, tanks, monsters and whatever else we could think of. In school, I’d much rather doodle than work on maths. When given the choice of breaking down sentences into their benign parts or draw—I’d choose to draw, usually to the dismay of my teachers. Even now, when I’m in very important meetings, my pen will drift off, curl around, loop, scratch and flow and before you know it, I’m doodling. Somehow doodling has become the best way for me to express myself, to think clearly and to most importantly, have fun. When I found this site—devoted to the art of doodling, I was immediately drawn in (he he). I’m honored to be a guest contributor for a while, and I’m glad to virtually meet all of you. Please take a few minutes out of your day and enjoy a good doodle. (This, my first-ever real blog post is devoted to Fly Away. Thanks little pal.)

New crop of advertdoodles

New crop of Doodle advertising is here and ready to be harvested by me, the hardworking doodle-farmer

First, fresh for the summer, Friendly’s Ice Cream came out with a summer print and tv ad campaign featuring… but of course!.. Notebooks, lined pages full of kids and their doodles. Website got a doodley-do-over too, even the loading progress thingy is an upside-down-kid sucking up doodled milkshake through a doodled straw from a doodled glass, how adorable!

One of my other guilty pleasures (besides ice cream) - Project Runway show on Bravo has been running very cool ads full of doodles that look like stitches (naturally!) Very appropriate and good looking.

While searching for the author of the adorable stitch doodles in the Project’s ads (with no luck, unfortunately), came across this book on Amazon:

First doodle-fishing, now doodle-stitching… who would’ve thought! Oh, the mysteries of the doodling world.

I know, I know, the woodcutting is as un-doodling as it gets. It’s hard work, it’s definitely not mindless, it requires skill and patience. But just the same, I love the results, especially if they arrive on a Tugboat.

And I can easily see how they could, possibly, start with a scribble on a scrap of stained wrapping paper somewhere in the depths of wood-smelling print shop…
The unfortunately sold-out Penguin Tee captured my heart.

Btw, did I ever show you my own penguins? They, of course, started out as a doodle somewhere on a napkin, but alas, I lost it, so this is a “cleaned up” and “colored in” version:

Calligraphic Doodles

This gal, jabzug, a student in NYC, is clearly having some fun with the hand-lettering, all while really studying typography and being bored in class. I like it a lot

I’d imagine lovely Canadian artist Eve Duhamel, who studied visual arts in Montreal and Santiago, Chile, was probably also an avid doodler in school. She still is, and we applaud her for that:

And finally, if you’re so lazy, you won’t even doodle letters, you can buy them at Urban Outfitters and stick them on your walls any way you want! Which is also, in a way kind of like doodling.

It’s a ~~bird~~ ~~plane~~ Swedish sneaker-doodle LookDown! Custom-made and right up our alley:

Famous Converse commissioned 100 musicians, graphic and graffiti artists from all over the world to use their canvas (pun intended) for designs inspired by the global fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. Jeff Hamada from Booooooom! doodled a cool handy design which was chosen by the Converse people and will appear in the stores near you in the near future.

Super-talented German artist Bobsmade (Anne) doodles on shoes, hats, bags, you name it. And every single thing that she touches with her magic black marker turns ~~from a pumpkin~~ into a trendy wearable art.

You can even watch a youtube video of her, performing the transformation.

And last but not least, some black and white twirly beauties from the before-mentioned Ukrainian SHCH Graphics Group.

Boy, am I glad this workweek is over… So much to do, so little time.Now, do you know what other doodle-related activity can help you unwind and relax when you finally make it home after crazy Friday frenzy? COLORING! Who says it’s for kiddies? Not anymore! There’s a ton of stuff out there specifically geared for adults who still have their pencils sharp and ready. I picked just two artists, who’s coloring pages are doodles, just waiting to be enhanced by a patient hand.Amazing, highly-detailed images by Phil Lewis:

World Beach Project

Well, the weather is certainly appropriate in our neck of the woods (unlike the past long weekend, when it rained on our ~~parade~~ camping trip)! How about some good-old beach-combing? Some people turn it into a super-creative, fun and artistic experience. See for yourself:

Victoria and Albert Museum’s Artist in Residence Sue Lawty devised the World Beach Project as a global art project open to anybody, anywhere, of any age. Building on the experience of making patterns on beaches and shorelines, this project combines the simplicity of making patterns with stones with the complexities of shape, size, color, tone, composition, similarity and difference.
The results are very different in the skill level and artistry, some abstract and some more realistic, some flat and others more 3-D. But that’s the whole point of this creative exercise!!!

Wild about Simon
