Public Meeting to explore Write On, Door County!

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, the Door Community Auditorium hosted a public meeting to explore: Write On, Door County! An initiative to facilitate and promote writing in Door County.

Jerod Santek, program director of The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota facilitated a public conversation exploring ways to develop Write On, Door County! The conversation focused on ways that the Door community can focus on and expand the literary arts for all ages from Southern Door to Washington Island. This first public meeting was well attended and elicited an enthusiastic response from all present.

Listen in as Jerod Santek presents the vision that launched The Loft and how Door County can go about launching a writing center of their own. During the presentation Mr. Santek highlights several other writing centers including 826 Valencia in San Francisco. 826 Valencia was co-founded by author Dave Eggers and employs Door County’s own Emilie Coulson of Victory Farm fame.

Door Community Auditorium Artist Spotlight: Johnny Hickman of Cracker

The Door Community Auditorium Artist Spotlight features an interview featuring Cracker vocalist and guitarist Johnny Hickman. He and his band Cracker will be performing onstage in Fish Creek on Saturday, May 5 at 7 PM. Cracker burst onto the scene in 1993 with the platinum-selling album Kerosene Hat and the hit songs, Low, Euro-Trash Girl and Get Off This. Since then, the band has toured continually and released ten studio albums. They’re still rocking today and the audience at the Auditorium will be treated to a rousing, unforgettable show. Barbara Luhring has known Kimberly Sawyer for most of her life and during that time Kimberly has always been a star. A star athlete (3 sport letter winner at Gibraltar High School), a star performer in plays and in choir as well as a star student. On January 15 of next year she will have the chance to shine yet again as she competes in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas as Door County’s own Miss Wisconsin. Barbara talks with Kimberly about the experience and about the benefit show she is putting on at the Door Community Auditorium on Saturday, December 18 with a cast of many. Door County artist and musician Jeanne Kuhns talks with Barbara Luhring about her summer concert series that is switching venues for 2009. The series outgrew the wonderful Town Hall Bakery in Jacksonport, and has found a new home at the Woodwalk Gallery in Egg Harbor. Jeanne has a diverse group of talented musicians making their way to Egg Harbor every Friday night this summer. She talks about the schedule and the beautiful music that will be filling the barn which was lovingly restored by Margaret Lockwood and Allin Walker.

Jeanne also talks about her son Eli Mattson and his music career that took off after his runner-up finish on America’s Got Talent.

Woodwalk Gallery is home to Margaret’s original oil paintings and their gallery featuring over 40 artists.

Door County Icon Norb Blei has come out with a third edition of his 1987 Door County classic Meditations on a Small Lake. In June, Pastor Michael Brecke of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church convinced him to perform selected readings from the book. The result was a packed house and Blei at his fesity best. Listen in.

Northern Door Children’s Center: a family resource in northern Door County

Barbara Luhring talks childrens’ early education with Sandy Friedenfels, board member and Cindy Trinkner-Peot, executive director of Sister Bay’s Northern Door Children’s Center. Full disclosure upfront: this center saved Barbara’s life when she moved here 21 years ago! Her daughter started attending what was then called Northern Door Child Care Center as an 8 week old and continued to attend the center for the next ten years.The level of care offered by the center back then was excellent. The expansion of services that has occurred when the center moved to a new facility eight years ago is even more impressive. Sandy and Cindy discuss the multitude of programs available through NDCC, as well as the challenges of operating a year round child care facility in a tourist destination. Christie Weber and pat mAcdonald organized quite a show and once again Door Pod Show was there! Recorded June 14-16, 2007, this series of podcasts on the topic of the fabulous Steel Bridge Songfest are Door Pod Show’s most ambitious production yet. The 17 audio files were pared down from over 100 recordings done over a three day period. And yes, it took me a long time to complete, but I think the results are worth it.
Here are a few things to keep in mind. Several files were recorded backstage and have lots of LOUD background noise. There was also lots of wind and some of the recordings reflect that, most notably the interview with Paulie Rocco. I think the interviews are worth the noise however and encourage you to give each one a listen. The podcasts include interviews with Jackson Browne, Jane Wiedlin, Jonathon Spottiswoode, James Hall, Chris Aaron, Ruby James, Tony Brown, Melanie Jane, Catacombs of Rome and many, many more artists. And don’t miss Margaret Welch of the National Trust for Historic Preservation who gives a shout out to Christie and pat for their hard work in preserving the Sturgeon Bay steel bridge. This year the podcasts are organized differently this year, into smaller audio files as opposed to the long all inclusive podcast format from last year. Host Barbara Luhring listens in as Norb Blei, Ron Whitehead and Rob Zoschke discuss Ron and Rob’s newly published editorial homage to the 50th anniversary of beat writer Jack Kerouauc’s On the Road. The book is called Reflections upon the 50th anniversary…Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. The discussion covers Kerouac’s influence on their own work and lives to his influence on writers, artists, and musicians since On the Road was published by Viking in 1957. Norb, Ron and Rob all have written pieces and artwork in the book which includes 43 other national and international writers, artists and photographers, including individuals from Door County. Lawrence Ferlinghetti, proprietor of City Lights Bookshop and Publishing House in San Francisco and acclaimed poet created the cover illustration especially for this book. At the end of the discussion Ron Whitehead does a reading of his new poem Looking for Jack Kerouac. This is a passionate discussion about one of the 20th century’s most influential authors.

During the interview they are joined by Pat’s sister Christie Weber, who discusses the purpose of the festival – to raise money for the repair and upkeep of the historic Michigan Street bridge in Sturgeon Bay and Adam Macintosh, a singer/songwriter from Denver who took part in the songwriter’s Construction Zone at the Holiday Motel last year.

Caitlin Oleson goes on the road to Leo Feldman and RiverRat Gallery’s “Drive By” multimedia art exhibit commemorating the National Rifle Association Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This pro-gun, pro-American, pro-NRA show featured works by Bob Watt, Johnie Shimon, pp d’CaCa, Erick von Munz, David Ruehl, Kris Ward and more. RiverRat Gallery is Milwaukeeâ€™s only homeless gallery. This unique urban art show was held in an alley adjacent to the fabulous Amazon Pizza. Listen in as Caitlin interviews Feldman’s curator Jimmy von Milwaukee along with artists pp d’CaCa, Erick von Munz, David Ruehl, and Kris Ward.

Brandon is in Door County to pitch Steven Diedrick of Redmond Research about becoming a corporate sponsor for his skateboard team.
