They have been driven out of business as a direct result of the Japanese Tsunami and it’s after effects.

Proppa, who went through the BBC’s Dragons Den and won investment, supplied aftermarket accessories to the motor industry, specifically the Japanese 4×4 truck sector. Following the devastation of that country’s industry and infrastructure, manufacturing and exports have ground to a halt. This has meant that the customers here no longer had access to the vehicles so in turn, did not buy the stock and the rest as they say is history.

There are many advantages to purchasing goods and services from abroad – mainly financial along with others such as quality, expertise, speed of supply amongst others. However the knock on effect of problems in the supply chain can ripple through with unknown consequences, especially when those problems are unforeseen and unplanned for.

The vast majority of the UK’s supply of 44mm GRP Composite Door Slabs is currently supplied from just 2 factories, one in Korea and the other in Taiwan – both half a world away. This has lead me to think that this is a good time to come to market with an alternative supply. It is no longer sound business practice to have all of your eggs in one basket and multi sourcing product has to make sense, particularly given that modern technology and methods have created markets which require instant gratification and which will not wait.

Even though the Doorway Products One Size Fits All composite door slab is manufactured in the Far East it does offer the industry an alternative in time of need, reducing reliance on one source of supply.

The Composite Door market is served by many companies, both large and small, but fundamentally they all do the same thing, as they say in parts of Yorkshire, they allow you to “put wood in’ ‘ole”. Or if you would rather, “Shut that door”.

The UK Composite Door market has grown rapidly in the last 5 years from a limited option, any colour as long as it’s white, social housing product chosen for its low maintenance and security to a high specification entrance system with a multitude of options, features and benefits.

The Composite Door manufacturers generally fall into one of two camps, those who manufacture their own Composite Door Slab from scratch or those who buy in a ready prepared Composite Door Leaf suitable for machining and fitting into a frame. In turn there are a number of options for materials used in the production of Door Slabs, predominantly the bought in market opts for a 44mm GRP Door Blank which is then trimmed as required.

A number of profile extruders to the Window and Door Industry have a suitable door system which is designed to take this size and easily manufacture a full Composite Door set.

The supply of the 44mm GRP Composite Door Slab is currently dominated by just 2 distributors and this has lead to supply issues for many customers. Doorway Products has sourced an alternative 44mm GRP Composite Door Slab to compete in this sector of the UK industry. Our Door Leaf has a major advantage over the current products in that it is manufactured over size, 850mm wide and will therefore allow the door manufacturer to make the majority of their doors using only one size rather than 3.

The One Size fits all concept for Composite Doors means that stock holding and inventory can be reduced, cash flow improved and reordering simplified. To take advantage of the benefits offered by the Doorway Products ‘One Size fits All’ Composite Door Slab please contact us
