From July 1 – August 29, 2009 The Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Gallery at Smith Farm Center in Washington, DC will be hosting Finding Beauty In A Broken World: In the Spirit of Frida Kahlo.

This exhibition hopes to showcase the work in all mediums of artists influenced not only by Kahlo’s art, but also by her biography, her thoughts, and her writing or any other aspect in the life and presence of this remarkable artist who can be interpreted through artwork.

We are seeking works of art that evoke the prolific range of expression, style and media like that which Frida Kahlo used as an outlet for her life’s experiences.

The show is curated by artist Allicette Torres with guest judges Lawrence Rodriquez, owner of Casa Frela Gallery and Gina Fuentes Walker, Cofounder of artHARLEM. This exhibition is slated to be the premiere showcase for Latina, Hispanic and Chicana contemporary photography and photography based mixed media.

The show tackles head on the idea of what is a Latina, Hispanic and Chicana woman through a modern and current interpretation of self and imposed identity. The idea of what a Latina, Hispanic and Chicana woman represents runs the gamut of the traditional to the abstract. With photographs that touch upon the sacred, religious iconography; to Teflon impermeable super heroine status to the fragility and suffocating doll like womanhood thrust upon us. In this exhibition the untrue archetypes have fallen away and demonstrate that we are not the Carmen Mirandaesque girls with baskets of fruit toppling over, nor the hot and spicy variety of women as Hollywood has pegged us to be. The show highlights new perceptions and new trends in how Hispanics are seeing themselves and in turn how others are perceiving us. The basal open question left for the viewer is where is the Latina, Hispanic and Chicana woman headed as the soon to be new female majority here in the United States of America.

The show will be featuring the Photography and Photographic Mixed Media from 13 artists that include Kathy Bozzuti-Jones, Daniele Casaburi, Michi Jigarjian, Reneé Khatami, Carmen Lizardo, Lisette Lopez, Elena Marrero, Jackie Munro, Jasmin Ortiz, Gabriela Peña Izquierdo, Priscilla Pompa Alvarez, Guadalupe E. Salinas and Allicette Torres.

Assembly workers with tools raised in a frozen moment of manufacturing. Doctors and scientists stand near a child in a nativity scene that pays tribute to medicine. Secretaries and accountants, heads bowed, fingers on typewriters and adding machines. One panel even shows Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company, seeming to watch a collection on unseen workers below him.

The meaning of these images is complex, a view of industry that challenges ideas about its role in society and raises issues of class and politics.

These murals were painted by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Rivera was already well known as the leader of the Mexican muralist movement when he started the work, and he considered Detroit Industry the most successful piece of his career.

The Bushwick Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library is located at 340 Bushwick Ave and would love to have artists use our space during BOS ‘09! We are home of the newish but already beloved ‘Bushwick Reading Series’ and hosted ‘Past Present and Future of Food in Bushwick’ as part of the SITE festival. We have a big and ‘bunkeresque’ space in our basement, complete with a somewhat elevated stage. The ground floor is sunny and spacious = a good room to set up gallery walls.

Palmetto AIR will host a video art show Sat 6/6, we are looking for video art to show. Work should be on a DVD and no longer that 7 minutes. Space is limited. We are also looking for a few visual artists, any media, who reside within a few blocks of Palmetto between Central and Evergreen.

Ladies and gentlement of the stage, Arts in Bushwick cordially invites you to submit your work for the BOS ‘09 Cabaret! This is a fabulous event every year, and the Cabaret team looks forward to this year being better than ever.

For the first time, we will be having a curated, themed show. The Cabaret theme is High Society. Recession special? Who needs it? We want more excuses to dress up. Please submit works that are appropriate to the theme suggestion. Think: Billionaires for Bush, fancy dress balls, and nights at the opera.

The Addtract Consortium, producer’s of last year’s concert/art/robot costume party series seeks performance, installation, and visual artists working in collaborative or experimental media to help create an immersive, multimedia experience for the Open Studios kickoff party. The party will take place on the top floor and rooftop of the Bushwick Department of Public Works on Melrose Street on Friday, June 5 from 10pm to 2am.

Hi, you’ve probably noticed the bar with the tinted windows and numbers on it on the Knickerbocker side of Maria Hernandez. That’s the 208Cafe and Lounge. It’s a real classy place with an owner really open to performers. He isn’t all up in your business and all, just wants you to get heads in there to see how nice he’s made the place. I will launch a show there Thursday May 21st (7 PM), “Hank Schwarzkopf and Peanut Butter Baby” where I present various performers; more or less it’s a third sketch comedy or comedic theater, a third world music from the neighborhood, and a third “wild card” which could be like wrestling, vaudville, performance art…something entertaining and interesting that is maybe rare or as of yet without definition. There are running gags and interviews with neighborhood personalities throughout. Im producing a special BOS edition at the 208, if there are any performers who want a place to do there thing during this great weekend please send an email telling me what you do.

Participants are immersed in the creative community of New York City, with the guidance of a distinguished faculty.

As luck would have it, Reed A. Prescott III lectured on this very topic at Artists’ Mediums in Williston, Vermont. Mr. Prescott approached the topic with the common sense of a businessman, or in Prescott’s case, of a full-time artist.

One myth that he worked to dispel was that the price of a work should be such so it will sell quickly. By artificially lowering the price to accommodate a market, an artist actually devalues their own work—as well as the works of every other artist in the area, and possibly even the galleries representing them.

Although Lee is known for his prolific moving images, his work has also influenced a multitude of visuals artists across genre, language and borders. This exhibit is an opportunity to showcase artwork and offer a public thank you for his inspiration.
