One of the messiest parts of cooking, depending on the dish, can be the slicing and gathering of raw ingredients for making salads or adding selectively to a pan.

While the curved sides of normal cutting boards are handy in many ways, they can make it a pain to move food from one surface to another – plus, depending on how much stuff you have cut, you may lose a lot when trying to tilt the board.

Hence the obviously-titled Transfer by DesignSpray, a German group that simply sliced a plate-shaped half-circle from the top of a normal board, then set it on rails to let a plate slide more easily underneath. Simply sweep the top with a knife and drop off just what you need for the next step.

More like a living room than a home away from home, this Finnish cottage was designed to supplement and provide relief from the everyday living space of a family living a few miles away in Helsinki.

The result is a little relaxing, sitting or sleeping, area with a bit of lofted storage for the inevitable stuff you want to get out of your way and a kitchen area for light cooking (convertible to a homework area for the kids) – no need for a shower, though, with home close at hand.

The entire structure is set up off the ground and could be moved intact as needed, but otherwise sits in a simple small plot of forests with other traditional Finnish retreats around it. Designed by Verstas Architects with photographs by Andreas Meichsner.

Want to eat alone? Well, too bad – this is not designed to let you do that. If there is a line in design between facilitating and forcing users, well, this certainly crosses it.

Created by dutch design student Marleen Jansen, there is just no getting around dual dining – if someone stands up to leave, the other person has to as well … or drops to the ground if they fail to follow.

Perhaps, like the original seesaws for children, there is a lesson in all of this about being polite, but etiquette aside, it would simply be fun to watch how people interact with such a thing in public, too.

Floating homes have to strike a delicate balance between livability and maximization of limited square footage. Most defer to the latter and form naturally into cubes as a result, but some, like this one, bend to accommodate their occupants better as well.

From steeltec37,  this modular design uses steel frame and glass infill elements to create a lightweight core living space – one side, however, bends to deflect direct sun, wind, waves and spray, while also creating a more private enclosure.

Sister and brother developers Kerstin and Thomas Wilde work together as architect and engineer, crafting custom buildings but also proposing broadly-deployable solutions such as this floating home – something that can stand alone or with sibling structures, each visually protected from the next.

There are some things you reach for every day when getting dressed, so if you have some extra rack space, here is a hanger that accommodates items normally set on a table or dresser.

While not the only see-through tub in town, this one makes a bold statement both in contrast to the surrounding tile and with a clean-edged simplicity that renders it almost impossible to see.

Stern McCafferty is a Boston architectural firm that took a cue from its clients in this case, creating the tub based on a photograph presented to them by the owners during an all-out gut renovation of their row house.

As part of a series of abstract play spaces and other kid-centric scenes, these photos show a real-life intermingling of beds and the ultimate childhood bedtime activity: being read a storybook.

Yusuke Suzuki is a photographer of the abstract, and this set is typical of her work: odds and ends lifting up off the page to be interacted with and form real-life scenes.

While perhaps not pragmatic, it looks like just about the most fun bed ever conceived. And when the kids get too tired? They can simply flop over and fall asleep, simple as that.

Functional architecture can take any number of shapes and adopt endless forms. In the case of the Room Room house by Takeshi Hosaka, function takes the form of almost a hundred small windows scattered all over the walls, ceilings and floors of a tiny two-story home in Tokyo.

The home is occupied by two hearing-impaired parents and their two sons. To facilitate communication via sign language – or verbally, in the case of the two non-hearing-impaired children – these 7.9″ square windows are scattered randomly across all surfaces.

The windows do not only allow communication between levels of the house and between outside and inside. They also let in natural light and allow potted plants to grow up from the first level, though the floor of the second level and into the large space there, creating an odd sort of continuity throughout the home.

Although perhaps not as effective as full-size windows at connecting the outdoors and indoors, perhaps that is the goal here. The home is in an exceptionally crowded part of Tokyo on a tiny plot of land. The small windows break up the scene outside and make it into something magical as seen through a hundred tiny 8″ square slices.

The family makes good use of the unusual floor openings, as well: the children sometimes drop small toy cars from the top story to the lower level to catch their parents’ attention.

In addition to the bedrooms on the first level and the large room on the second level, there is a rooftop terrace accessible via a skylight and ladder which adds to the living space of the structure.

Room Room is actually an annex to a family home on an adjoining plot of land which eventually became too small for the three generations living there. As such, this structure has no kitchen facilities; only the second-story living/play area, the two small first-level rooms and a small bathroom.

You might say it is a detached living room built to accommodate an overflow of family, or a retreat that allows the young children to run free without contending with the clutter and furniture in a regular home.

Undoubtedly, the Room Room home is a lovely example of how interiors designed to accommodate differences can be visually striking as well as functional.
