Across all sports, there are athletes who leave a lasting impression on generations—both through their achievements on the field and their natural charisma. These athletes are beloved by fans, but even more so by their teammates. And it's no wonder! After all, they weather every storm together. They share intimate moments. They win championships side by side.

When the time comes to retire, their absence from team activities leaves a void. Things aren't the same as they used to be. There's a period of mourning. Yet this is the cycle of life, and life is filled with countless small losses to grapple with

One athlete who meets all the criteria listed above is Clayton Kershaw. The man who needs no introduction seems to be living in perfect bliss since he hung up his cleats at the end of the most recent season. Just recently, to everyone's surprise, the former pitcher was in the stands as a spectator to watch a game featuring his former teammates. His former catcher, Will Smith, was moved to see him again and had nothing but kind words for him. To quote him: his absence from the team's circle is felt.

Will Smith said Clayton Kershaw’s “presence is missing.”

“He was special. Obviously on the field but also as a teammate.” pic.twitter.com/rjAiUw39A0

An athlete like no other

Clayton Kershaw was long considered one of the best pitchers of his era, if not the best. He defined the 2010s: his multiple Cy Young Awards confirm this. Admittedly, his postseason performances didn't live up to his regular-season form, but in his prime, he was a joy to watch pitch. He controlled games magnificently.

The years passed and his role with the team diminished. However, he was always there, in the dugout and in the locker room with his teammates, a smile on his face. Ready to step up whenever his presence on the field was needed.

Let's not kid ourselves: it was Kershaw who decided to leave the Dodgers, not the Dodgers who pushed him into retirement. There would always have been a place for the great left-hander in the white and blue uniform. A legend like that, who represented the city of Los Angeles for 18 years, deserves respect!

Smith says it: he was special. Both on the field and in the locker room. It makes sense—with his illustrious career, Kershaw has seen it all, and he must have been a guiding light for his teammates. Both as an athlete and as a person.

It's clear that a player as iconic as Clayton Kershaw is missed by his peers. It's no wonder they were all happy to see him back at Dodger Stadium, sitting right by the field in the owner's box.

Come to think of it, perhaps that's how you define the greatness of an athlete. When his absence is felt almost as much as his presence, long after he's gone. That's a testament to Kershaw.

Soon, all eyes will officially turn to the draft.

For the first time since 2022, there's no real consensus. Gavin McKenna has a good chance of being drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs, but even then, nothing is certain.

McKenna has received positive feedback from scouts and league insiders. But one comment came up often: he can be a bit frustrating for the team.

Sometimes you don't see him on the ice, and he can be really exasperating, but his talent is extraordinary. He doesn't even need to give it his all to score three points. – a scout

One executive says he reminds him of Artemi Panarin: an exceptional talent, but one who will play for three or four teams and disappear in the playoffs.

In the article by the much-maligned Corey Pronman (The Athletic), several league executives shared their opinions.

They all agree that the guy has talent, but he lacks the grit. A few weeks ago, however, he said in an interview that his grit is the strength of his game. Yet, all the experts say the opposite…

Still, passing on a talent like this would be a big risk for Toronto. If the new front office were to pass him over, there would be a lot of grumbling in the City of Kings.

It really reminds me of the situation in 2022, in Montreal: new management, first overall pick, no real consensus on the top pick.

Toronto won't be at home, but in Buffalo—it's pretty much the same thing, honestly. 2026 isn't the new 2016 after all; it's the new 2022.

Renaud Lavoie reported this today on JiC.

Lavoie notes that it was obviously a little joke aimed at his good friend. Remember that Tortorella was the Habs' head coach in the past. And back then, there were no tablets.

The Montreal Alouettes continue to build for the future by adding an intriguing name to their roster.

The Montreal organization recently secured exclusive negotiating rights for quarterback Luis Perez, a veteran who has played for several NFL teams throughout his career.

An Unconventional Path to Professional Football

Luis Perez is known for his unconventional path. After finding success at the collegiate level, he managed to attract the attention of professional scouts despite a career trajectory that took him far from the major powerhouses of American football. Over the years, he has secured opportunities with several NFL teams while continuing his career in various professional leagues.

Although he never managed to establish himself as a long-term starting quarterback in the NFL, Perez has built a reputation as a reliable and experienced player. His name remains well-known among fans of alternative football, where he has often demonstrated his ability to lead an offense effectively.

What do negotiation rights mean?

In the CFL, each team maintains a negotiation list that grants it exclusive rights to certain players competing elsewhere, including in the NFL, American spring leagues, or college football. If a player on this list eventually decides to pursue a career in the CFL, only the team holding his rights may negotiate with him.

The addition of Luis Perez does not necessarily mean he will join the Alouettes anytime soon. Rather, it is a strategic move that allows Montreal to get a head start should the quarterback show future interest in the CFL.

An insurance policy for the future

With Davis Alexander and the other options already in the organization, the Alouettes have a degree of stability at the quarterback position. However, CFL teams are constantly monitoring the market to identify talent that could strengthen their roster in the medium or long term.

The acquisition of Luis Perez's negotiation rights aligns with this philosophy. Even though his arrival in Montreal remains hypothetical, the Alouettes are ensuring they control the discussions should the former NFL quarterback one day decide to cross the border to continue his career in Canada.

And Bolduc's contract can wait. He won't be a free agent after all. Yes, he may receive hostile offers from other teams, but it's not as if the Habs are in financial trouble and wouldn't be able to match an offer.

It's been a week now since we learned that Brendan Gallagher won't be returning to Montreal next year. During the team's end-of-season review, the veteran announced that it was “pretty obvious he was going to leave.”

And he seemed very, very emotional—he was in tears when he spoke about it.

But since then, the man himself has kept a low profile. We saw him being honored last night at a gala… but it's worth noting that he took a few minutes to answer some questions from Mike Cohen.

And Gally, not surprisingly, mostly talked about all the good times he's had since arriving in Montreal. He mentioned that the city, over time, had become his second home.

Gallagher also confirmed that he hadn't necessarily planned to announce his upcoming departure during the club's end-of-season review. He did it because he's honest, but it wasn't planned in advance.

Last winter, it was reported that Ketel Marte was on the trade market. But what was particularly interesting was that, at the time, it was reported (somewhat out of the blue) that he was causing frustration within the Diamondbacks organization.

His tendency to ask for days off seems to be the main point of friction between Marte and members of the organization.

That said, Marte stayed in Arizona. He's having a season that's a bit disappointing by his standards, but he remains a talented hitter at a position (second base) where they're rare.

Except that Bob Nightengale, in an article for USA Today, mentioned Marte's situation… and what we gather is that the frustrations haven't been resolved.

Seeing him take a day off when Shohei Ohtani was the opposing starting pitcher didn't go over well.

Sunday Notebook: Tarik Skubal trade will require major MLB deadline bravery just like CC Sabathia 18 years ago. Who's in? https://t.co/OS6W9VZdpc

— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) June 7, 2026

Keep in mind that Marte is under contract through 2030 and also holds a player option for the 2031 season. This means he's not anywhere near free agency… but there's another factor complicating the picture.

Because earlier this year, Marte reached the 10-year service mark. And since he's also spent five consecutive years with his current team, he now has a no-trade clause.

We don't actually know if Marte wants to leave. But what we do know is that even if the Diamondbacks are frustrated, they won't be able to trade Marte if he has no intention of leaving.

This is one of the main reasons his name was mentioned quite a bit last winter (even though he hadn't yet reached 10 years of service)… and it's why the Diamondbacks might be stuck with him.

The New England Patriots find themselves in a paradoxical situation heading into the 2026 NFL season.

After surprising the world by reaching the Super Bowl in Mike Vrabel's first year as head coach, the team is now ranked among the underdogs according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI).

The analytical index, designed to predict future performance, gives the Patriots only a 2.7% chance of winning the Super Bowl, placing them 14th in the NFL. Meanwhile, their AFC rivals, the Buffalo Bills, lead the way with a 10.7% chance, ranking first in the conference. The Los Angeles Rams lead the overall rankings with 14.9%, while the Seattle Seahawks, champions of the last Super Bowl, stand at 7.0%.

ESPN notes, however, that this assessment isn't necessarily a harsh judgment on the team. According to Seth Walder, the Patriots' previous season was marked by a relatively easy schedule and favorable playoff matchups against the Chargers, Texans, and Broncos—who were without Bo Nix. These factors may partly explain why the FPI sees them dropping in the rankings.

Despite these cautious projections, the New England franchise bolstered its offense this summer, notably with the acquisition of star wide receiver A.J. Brown, formerly of the Eagles. This addition could transform the passing game—considered the team's strength—and increase its chances of long-term success.

The Patriots: Underdogs but with Potential in 2026

Despite their “long-shot” status, the Patriots remain contenders: they have a 6.7% chance of returning to the Super Bowl and a 2.7% chance of winning it, according to the FPI. In the AFC East division, they trail the Bills with a 30.6% chance of winning the division compared to Buffalo's 67.6%, but their potential remains significant for those who believe in Drake Maye's talent and the new offensive dynamic.

This season, Patriots fans will need to closely monitor the performance of the revamped offense and the team's ability to transform itself from underdogs into genuine contenders for the title.
