THIS IS WHERE WE STARTED

When our oldest was just learning to talk, this is the type of prayer we started with. Over the years, our family prayer has grown into something longer and more complicated, but it started with just a few recited prayers and a short list of petitions. So, if your kids are still very young, or you are totally new to family prayer, start here!

Here is what I suggest:

1. Gather for prayer at a specific time and place in your home. Turn off distractions and place a crucifix or icon in the center so that your family can focus on it as you pray.
2. Together, recite an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.
3. Starting from the youngest to the oldest, have each family member share a short list of petitions, talking directly to God.
4. Ask your patron saints to pray for you (“St. Andrew, PRAY FOR US!, St. Joan of Arc, PRAY FOR US!).
5. Recite the St. Michael Prayer.
6. Make the Sign of Cross.

You can, of course, adjust the prayers you recite and the order you do things in. This prayer should take less than 10 minutes, and if you do this each day as a family, it will establish a habit of prayer that you can build on for years to come!

WHAT IS THE DIVINE MERCY CHAPLET?

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is part of the Divine Mercy Devotion, which Jesus Himself gave to us through St. Faustina just over 100 years ago. It is a beautiful practice to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet daily for those who have died and those facing death this day, especially those who will die alone. Jesus promised many blessings for those who say this prayer before they die.

Jesus appeared to St. Faustina, a Polish nun, and asked her to promote devotion to His Divine Mercy. This devotion included an image of Christ with rays of light shooting forth from His heart. The red rays symbolize His blood and the Eucharist. The white rays symbolize the water that flowed from His side and the waters of baptism. He also asked that under His image the words “Jesus, I trust in you” be written. 

To pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, all you need is a rosary! And praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet takes less than half the time required to pray a full Rosary. Therefore it is a great prayer for young families.

According to the quiz, your family is ready to dive into a Scripture study! God invites you and your family to interact with His living and powerful Word. Do this as a family, and together listen to God’s Word and learn to hear Him speak in your life.

WHAT IS A FAMILY SCRIPTURE STUDY?

We hear Scripture read each Sunday at Mass, but we are invited to spend more time interacting with God’s Holy Word. Reading Scripture independently is a beautiful practice, but I encourage you to also get into the practice of studying Sacred Scripture as a family. 

For years, we have done this in the simplest possible way. Each night, Bill, my husband, reads the daily Gospel reading as part of our family prayer time. After he reads it, he picks out a verse for us to repeat a few times. The goal is to memorize this verse as a family. Then, we briefly discuss that verse and the passage as a whole. Although some nights the kids are uncooperative, some nights we have beautiful conversations and walk away with a powerful verse memorized and planted deep in our hearts. 

We have also done several other types of Scripture studies over the years. Each Advent, we pray through the Jesse Tree, a Scripture study of the Old Testament, and Each Lent, we pray through the Jesus Tree, a Scripture study of one of the Gospels. 

The most powerful Scripture study we have done together, however, was one focused on renewing our love of the Holy Eucharist. Encountering the Heart of Jesus is a beautiful study of both the Old and the New Testaments, focused on transforming families’ hearts and bringing them closer to Jesus, Fully Present in the Blessed Sacrament. 

HOW WOULD MY FAMILY USE A SCRIPTURE STUDY?

Committing to a multi-week study as a family takes some planning and lots of follow-through. Also, we have NEVER completed a six-week study in six weeks. It almost always takes us double or triple the required time, and we are fine with that! We finish when we finish and always walk away better for it. 

We also have done family Scripture studies in a variety of ways. During Lent and Advent, we add the Scripture study to our family evening prayer. However, we wanted to create more space for discussion when we went through Encountering the Heart of Jesus. Because of this, we completed this study over family dinners. Now, dinner in our house is just as crazy as it is in yours. Toddlers that don’t want to sit down, sports practices that cut it short, five-year-olds that don’t want to eat their veggies. I get the struggles, and there were some nights we just could not get through the study, which is why it took us so long to get through it. But, we stuck to it and finished and were renewed because of it!
