The long wait is over, Rangers.

The Wasteland 3 Fig campaign concluded at the end of 2016, and in the almost four years since then we’ve worked hard to make that promise a reality. Hopefully with the release of Wasteland 3 we’ll have met and exceeded your expectations.

Whether you’re a backer from the old days or you’re just now checking it out on Xbox Game Pass, we welcome you to our dark, funny, and gritty view of a post-apocalyptic Colorado. We invite you to take you first steps into the challenging tactical combat, and dozens of hours of deep story full of colorful characters, twists and turns, and brutal ethical choices. You’ll have to make choices and live with the consequences because Wasteland is a series all about reacting to your decisions, and there will be plenty of ways to change the course for Colorado and its people.

We’ve already had reviews rolling in, and the team’s been excitedly sharing 5/5 and 9/10 review scores with each other. But regardless of how the game is rated by press, we’re most excited to get it into your hands and hear what you think. So be sure to follow @Wasteland on Twitter, join the conversation in the inXile forums, and let us know how you’re enjoying yourself.

Thank you again to our backers, our fans both new and old, and any fans out there we’ve yet to meet. Your support and feedback are extremely important to us, and we look forward to continuing to support Wasteland 3 for the foreseeable future.

Wasteland 3 is available now with Xbox Game Pass, on Xbox One, and on PC for Windows 10 and Steam. Head over to Wasteland 3‘s official site and join us in our post-apocalyptic winter wonderland.

It wasn’t too long ago that we had some high ambitions of keeping the site fresh and full of blog posts to keep things alive and well. Like most plans, things didn’t turn out that way. We got super busy working on some titles we have talked about, and some that we can’t.

Over the last 2 weeks we had an opportunity to reconsider how information on this site was presented, and some of the foundational technologies that we are using to power the site. We’ve gone ahead and rebuilt much of the site using a much more simplified data object model which allows us to quickly iterate on designs and page rendering performance has been sped up by orders of magnitude. Hopefully, this improves everyone’s reading/viewing experience and gives us a chance to focus on other projects. We also are going to try to put back some of the old posts that we’ve got archived from previous versions of the website. This is currently the 7th major update to the site since our inception, so there’s an incredible amount of content archived to draw from.

One last thing to note is that Galileo has been turned into an open-source project, so if you were on the fence about paying for it prior, now its all yours, free of charge.

It has been a rollercoaster year for all of us at dotBunny.

This past year we forged some incredible relationships throughout the industry and have set plans in motion for the next couple of years to create an amazing game.

As we start to look to the future, we have decided to resurrect data ownership and are going to use the “blog” feature of the site to dispense any news. That is in part why we have transitioned back to using WordPress to power the site in an effort to minimize some of our extra hardware in AWS. Less surface area for attack.

This transition is expected to take a few months as it is merely a “Friday” task, as we continue to focus on doing what we do best, making games.

It’s been a long time coming, and these last few “Torment” weeks sure have been exciting. Time really does fly when you’re having fun, and we have had a fun-filled couple of years. This project has been a love letter to the RPG community. The sheer amount of detail that went into the game’s design and dialogue is staggering.

Torment is out

We are not ones to “kiss and tell”, so don’t expect much more in the way of details in this post. That, however, doesn’t preclude us from getting that awesome feeling of seeing Let’s Plays of stuff we’ve directly worked on, or having your children seeing the game on the shelves at local stores. With nearly 3 years spent on the project, it represented a significant time chunk for our company, one which we gladly would spend again.

Go check it out for Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) on Steam or GOG. It’s also available on PS4 and Xbox One, on their respective stores or found at retail outlets.

Post-release update

After an incredible launch, Torment surpassed critics expectations and reviewed quite well across the board. Averaging out around 81 on Metacritic, I can honestly say everyone at dotBunny is happy to have been involved in such an awesome title. The team at inXile deserve a nice long vacation after the herculean effort we all put in to make this title a success. So many wonderful experiences and memories, especially our infinite love for hexagons.

The dotBunny team wishes our very best to E*D Films with their new GCAP baby.

Back in October of 2015, one of dotBunny’s favorite contractors (Dan Gies) reached out about an idea. He needed our technical backing to bring the idea to life. Dan’s studio E*D Films had grown into a well-known boutique animation studio in Montreal. They, however, were a little short on technical expertise. The plan was to apply for pre-production funding through the Canadian Media Fund, for what would eventually be called GCAP, and then renamed SceneTrack (again).

Research & Development

When the CMF gave the go-ahead the excitement in the air was palpable. A chance for dotBunny’s rarely talked about “advanced development” side to work on a fringe-industry project. Within a month, we had completed a prototype of the concept. It recorded the entirety of a scene’s gameplay in Unity and then dumped it out to a Maya file. The idea was that an animator/movie director could puppeteer a scene in Unity. Take the output, tweak it, and then render it out in Maya at a higher quality. This, however, is not where the story ends, as the idea caught a few people’s attention, and it became clear that there was a viable market for the product.

Production Funding

E*D Films applied for another round of funding from the CMF, again listing dotBunny as the technical backers of the project. The plan was to really push the technical side of the project. To create a unique backend system to house the data real-time, while simultaneously creating a disk copy, without any performance impact. We are very ambitious when it comes to creating new things. Always striving to make greatness. One of the major hurdles we all faced this time around was the timeline. Trying to get a product to market, in a field where new things are popping up daily, delays are your enemy. The application process took far longer than expected. We started to see competitors making gains in a similar space. Either way, when the application was finally approved (October 2016) it began an incredible journey of architecting and developing one incredible piece of technology.

At first, I wasn’t sure about how incredible what we were making was. When every animator who saw the tech working had that light bulb moment, it became infectious.

The team spent 4 months re-developing SceneTrack into what is now formally called GCAP (Gamifying Cinematic Animation Production). It was a happy, yet sad day when we checked off our final milestone. We had poured our heart and soul into the project. We created something that fundamentally changed the way data gets written to disk. Yet, it was time to hand the project over to E*D Films. Our team had created a multi-platform, multifaceted system which used an open-source model for its input plugins (so users can easily write their own), a centralized threaded data store system, and multiple exports (FBX, MIDI, XML, MP4, etc.). We felt like surrogate parents, handling over the child that we had loved and cared for since birth to its future parents.

The dotBunny team wishes our very best to E*D Films with their new GCAP baby.

For years, we sat on our old logo. Too busy to invest any time into creating something that felt right, but always wanted too. Eventually that feeling grows, from a small nagging voice in the back of your head to a driving force at a company. In the summer of 2016, we collectively decided we needed to create a brand that would be the face of the company for a decade to come.

Previous to this, we would change the brand every couple of years to kind of match the current trend in logo design, but now we needed to create our own wordmark. Something that would be unique and us.
