The Sox completed a 3-game sweep of the M's, but not before Craig Hansen put the potential winning run on base in the bottom of the 12th. An infield hit by Willie Bloomquist and a smash up the middle by Jose Lopez brought Raul Ibanez to the plate with two on and two out. Hansen fell behind Ibanez, 3 and 1, then walked him.

John Farrell came to the mound for a visit, Jose Vidro, who had three hits and a walk, came to the plate. The rest of the Sox, meanwhile, contemplated what time they'd be arriving back in Boston. About 5 a.m. was a good guess.

Hansen went to 3 and 0 on Vidro, and homicidal thoughts flowed freely through the Sox dugout. But Hansen saved himself a long flight home by throwing a strike, then getting a roller to Pedroia to end it.

The Sox go home a half game behind Tampa and three games ahead of Yanks, who come to Fenway Friday for a three-game set.

The Sox then capitalized on an error by Willie Bloomquist, who dropped Kevin Youkilis's liner to center to score three times in the 12th to take a 6-3 lead.
Jacoby Ellsbury singled to start the rally and moved to second on Dustin Pedroia's ground out. JD Drew was walked intentionally, and Bloomquist dropped Youks' liner to load the bases. Mike Lowell followed with a two-run single and Sean Casey singled home another run.
Craig Hansen is in to close out the M's.

PORTLAND, Maine -- Officially in a rain delay. We've just been advised that the rain is supposed to stop sometime before 8 p.m., at which time, they'll hopefully be able to ready the field.

Here's hoping.

Those in the stands are watching the Sox and M's on the big board.

Then, when Coco Crisp got a late break on Johjima's liner, Ellsbury came streaking across from left to make a running catch in front of Coco, who might not have gotten there in time.
Oki just walked pinch-hitter Miguel Cairo; Tito has gone to Manny Delcarmen to face Willie Bloomquist. Not a real vote of confidence in Oki, to be sure.

The guy with the next most hits is Matt Holliday of the Rockies, with 50.

The hit went for naught, however, as J.D. Drew struck out and so did Youks, with Pedroia erased at second for an inning-ending play.

The Seattle pitcher was J.J. Putz, who is being used in non-closer situations since he just came off the DL.

3-3, middle of 7. Masterson comes out for the bottom of the 7th.

PORTLAND, Maine -- Still in a holding pattern in rainy Portland. Field covered in gray tarp, weather radar map covered in every other color.

To most of those who are braving the elements (and the stands are surprisingly full), the chief concern is getting to see Ortiz.

And that's an iffy proposition, at this point.

But there are Eastern League concerns, too. This is the last trip to Portland for the Connecticut Defenders, and with both teams fighting for the same Northern Division playoff spot, all parties would like to get this one in.

PORTLAND, Maine -- No BP for BP (Big Papi).

Rain took care of that.

Hadlock Field is being pelted by rain at present, which has waylaid any plans by the Portland Sea Dogs, and rehabbing Bosox slugger David Ortiz from taking any outdoor batting practice swings.

This is scheduled to be Ortiz final day of a six-game rehab stint, including the final three in Portland. But tonight's game with against the Connecticut Defenders is in jeopardy, so we'll sit tight.

Ortiz did take batting practice in the indoor cage.

No first inning blues today for Clay

With the help of an inattentive Ichiro, who was caught napping after his leadoff single, Clay Buchholz breezed through the first inning, after being touched for a total of five first inning runs in his previous two starts.

Ichiro led off by lining a single just past Jed Lowrie, but wasn't paying attention when he took a walking lead and was picked off.

Buchholz proceeded to strike out the next two hitters, Jose Lopez and Raul Ibanez.

Sox did not cash in on back to back walks to Dustin Pedroia and J.D. Drew, so it was scoreless after one.

There are trade rumors swirling through the Sox clubhouse. Some players are amused by the notion of planting false rumors, hoping to make reporters look stupid--Lance Berkman to the Rays fit in that category--but there may be a legit one involving the Sox. We'll keep you posted.
