I used the negative painting technique which consists of painting around an object instead of painting the object itself, in watercolors negative technique produce beautiful results. I like this technique as it gives a mystery to the painting, and let the objects blend in the painting nicely. checkout this interesting tutorial done by Catherine de ryck about negative painting, very nicely done.

Abstract nubian village in watercolors done on 300 g/m2 Arches paper 10x14 inch. I used a new technique which is color layering, and it happens that I like it a lot, it makes all the elemnts of the painting merge in harmony, such as this painting where the blue tones create the dominant ambiance.

Lake Landscape using Joe Dowden Style

Watercolor painting of a landscape using the style of Joe Dowden, whom I like his style very much, by the way it's part of the realistic school that I am exploring right now and this is the second painting following this school. What I like about Dowden is how he controls and organize chaos in order to convey reality and that is what I was trying to do for example in the background trees and how they are blended with the foliage painted in Lemon Yellow and Phtalo green. I learned also very helpful hints and details about how to do the foreground rocks and give the feeling of rocks under water. And by the way sorry for the quality of the picture as I forgot to take the picture before doing the frame.

The Nile in Cairo on a misty morning in Watercolors

This is another painting inspired by the book “Skies in Watercolors” by Ron Ranson, I tried to paint the Nile with a Felluca in the morning mist. The painting is done in wet on wet technique which is very nice to depict a misty atmosphere.

3 steps to draw trees wet in wet using watercolors

Drawing trees in watercolors using wet in wet technique is a very educational exercise, all you have to do is grab a small sketchbook, a brush, 3 to 4 colours and you are ready to go.

So here you go, only 3 easy steps to do it :

Step 1- You start doing the foliage wet in wet, applying a layer of yellow, then another layer of green, and why not small touches of orange here and there, for a feeling of fall.

Step 2- Then mix a brown watercolor, let’s say Burnt Umber with some French Ultramarine and apply a thick and rich mixture in order to depict the branches of your tree, don’t wait until the foliage colors are dry… apply your dark color wet in wet in order for it to bleed into the initial foliage colours suggesting dark areas shaded by the foliage.

Step 3- Start the tree branches from up to down, from the smallest branches, and getting bigger as you go down, finishing with the tree trunk, applying only the dark colour from one side in order to suggest rounded form.

Et Voila, not bad for an Oak tree…..

It’s a very easy exercise and it has helped me a lot to conquer my fear of painting and drawing tress in watercolours.

Painting Cups in watercolor Ink and wash is a very recurrent subject for me, because painting in Ink is very easy to carry out, fast, rich in tonal differences, values, the black and white colors and the in-between shades of gray provide a very rich span.

Ink paitning for me is perfect for studying shades, light and dark effects in what I paint. with Ink and watercolor wash everything in front of you becomes a subject for painting!!
