Feluccas on the Nile from a scene in Aswan, I used in this painting the Style of Ron Ranson a great landscape watercolorist, from his book Skies in Watercolors. His book inspired and helped me a lot with the different types of skies and how to paint them and also the foreground rocks.

3 steps to draw trees wet in wet using watercolors

Drawing trees in watercolors using wet in wet technique is a very educational exercise, all you have to do is grab a small sketchbook, a brush, 3 to 4 colours and you are ready to go.

So here you go, only 3 easy steps to do it :

Step 1- You start doing the foliage wet in wet, applying a layer of yellow, then another layer of green, and why not small touches of orange here and there, for a feeling of fall.

Step 2- Then mix a brown watercolor, let’s say Burnt Umber with some French Ultramarine and apply a thick and rich mixture in order to depict the branches of your tree, don’t wait until the foliage colors are dry… apply your dark color wet in wet in order for it to bleed into the initial foliage colours suggesting dark areas shaded by the foliage.

Step 3- Start the tree branches from up to down, from the smallest branches, and getting bigger as you go down, finishing with the tree trunk, applying only the dark colour from one side in order to suggest rounded form.

Et Voila, not bad for an Oak tree…..

It’s a very easy exercise and it has helped me a lot to conquer my fear of painting and drawing tress in watercolours.

Painting Cups in watercolor Ink and wash is a very recurrent subject for me, because painting in Ink is very easy to carry out, fast, rich in tonal differences, values, the black and white colors and the in-between shades of gray provide a very rich span.

Ink paitning for me is perfect for studying shades, light and dark effects in what I paint. with Ink and watercolor wash everything in front of you becomes a subject for painting!!

Using Masking Fluid for Watercolors

Using Masking Fluid for watercolors is more simple than I thought it would be, I think it’s a replacement for negative painting. All you have to do is to have an old brush you don’t use anymore, wet your brush, rub it in soap for maximum impact and ease of use, dip it in the masking fluid then finally of course you begin painting and using it in the places where you want to apply the masking fluid in well in areas that you want to keep white, that’s why its important not to throw away your old brushes.

N.B: Of course you can always paint on these areas again once you take off the masking fluid, when the fluid is completely dry you can take it off by rubbing it with your fingers, AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!!!

I was in Paris when I bought the fluid and so it was my first time so naturally I was very excited to buy a bottle of this fluid “Gomme Liquide pour dessin” as it is said in French, I couldn’t wait to get back to Egypt to test my new gadget, I can’t describe the feeling I was in the skies!! And I think it turned out a very nice and interesting technique, it enabled me to do the above painting of trees landscape.

So I followed the instructions of my favourite Book How to Paint and Draw
By Hazel Harrison, great book that explains various techniques, its divided into four parts, this book covers all the most popular mediums: drawing, watercolor, oil and acrylic, and pastel. In this book the painter says “the great advantage of using the masking fluid is that it removes the worries and allows to paint more freely” well he couldn’t be more right, especially for a student in watercolors like me.

Well the steps I took to achieve this painting:

Step one: I used the masking fluid with a small brush to reserve the small areas “white areas I want to keep white” on the trees suggesting light or other effects on the trees.
Step two: Then I applied a light wash (lavis) of blue-gray color on the whole area between the tree trunks with tonal differences to create depth in the painting suggesting the foliage and the background.

Step three: I allowed the first wash to dry and then I applied Greens and yellows in various areas wet in wet.

Step Four: I allowed all colors to dry then I applied browns on the tree trunks and on the masking fluid, using mainly Burnt Umber Brown

Step five: Most FUN part, I took off the masking fluid

Step six: Well some of the white areas are so white, so I darkened some with some yellows and Ocre color

Fruit painting in watercolors

Painting fruits and still life is always a tempting subject to do especially with watercolors but it’s a subject that I always apprehend because in general when I draw and paint fruit its seems that its has no life.. when I paint still life I always forget the “Life part” but this time I realised that one of the most important things was the light direction or in short the light. The small tricks and tips that I learned so far about depicting and capturing light paid off in this fruit painting. The other vey important thing is composition, I personally prefer a smooth composition rather than a bull’s eye effect where everything smack at the center, of course you can disagree!!

Oh about the colors well I was in the mood for some strong flashy colors.

Today’s recommended site is Julia Sawrtz especially the still life part and the fruit paintings, the artist dares to approach very difficult types for me like plums, grapes and the most difficult for me Kiwis and pumpkins. Her original watercolors are great too check it out.

I also found a great place called About.com painting, I found tons of projects of still life and fruit, I really enjoyed discovering them before I painted my platter, here is an example:

“Direction of Light: Judging by where the highlights are on the plate and fruit, the light is shining from directly in front. But judging by the shadows, the light is coming from the back on the right-hand side. The direction of light (and thus the shadows and highlights) needs to be consistent throughout the painting. Wet on wet watercolor painting

Painting wet-in-wet watercolor looks very simple at the first trial, but you discover that the pigments and the water are uncontrollable!!! But practice will prevail at the end.

The response of color applications in watercolor painting is amazing, it has always fascinated me, and especially the Wet-in-wet watercolor technique I think its more “picturesque” than painting on dry.

One of my old works done applying wet on wet lavis of watercolors, one of the things I really love to learn is how to control the water smudges of watercolors created by the wet on wet watercolor application, but I think its by time and experience.

Tip#1:

The area on which you are working on should not be overworked or soacked.
Tip#2: ,

The second layer will spread very easily producing watermarks….here is where it gets intersesting, the secret is to know how to leave them untouched!!! Controlling of course the amount of water the brush is charged with. PRACTICE!!! Is the secret….

One of my trials in Encre de chine wet on wet, trying to create depth by applying differerent tones.

Hello this post is not for me, its for a great Egyptian Artist & painter that I like very much. She likes to paint with Acrylic and Gouach, She always tell me that these mediums are very simple to handle especially when there is a correction to be made....well I like all mediums..but there is nothing for me that parallels the watercolor effects....

Hello all,
I know I haven't been posting lately, actually I am doing a Master degree in Marketing and my exams start the 10th of the coming May... so whish me Luck!! this post is just to give you a "PROOF OF LIFE" but I couldn't leave the post empty, so this is my very latest production.. its amazing what you can learn from tutorial books I just can't stop buying books about aquarelle. One thing that I really did bad in this painting is that the water reflection isn't really coherent with the hill itself...!!!! Sorry for that :) but I am rather satisfied with my water reflections shapes, do you agree ????

I've always been fascinated by tonal differences to create depth, and especially with blue colour because it give such great tones, so here it is my first authentic painting of Cairo, inspired by a photo that I had to park my car in the middle of the street creating such a mess, in order to take this photo of the ancient Cairo site viewed from a slightly high point. So I used French Ultramarine Blue... the middle tone was mixed with Chinese White and the very soft blue in the background was just heavily diluted...... I wanted to use another colour in this painting so I used in a way the complementry colour of the blue and Violet tones which is the yellow cadmium... so I think i turned up rather nice giving somewhat of city lights in the bottom...Hope you like it.

I's not a version of my daughter, I didn't do anything to the picture, thought it was nice the way it is. So this is my daughter with a typical bedouin head decoration, we were in Dahab a little town on the Red Sea "Sinai" in Egypt. you have 2 options in Dahab => either to Dive or to relax and sit in cafe's by the carpet like Red Sea. We had a really good time.

WOW Its good to be back, this post is just a proof of life...... Lately I have been to Lebanon, Red Sea (Egypt) and France. Its good to be home though.
