Petition To Return to Primary Elections

As all of you know, the Presidential Preference Poll and Precinct meeting date, February 4 is upon us. This the only opportunity we will have to express our choice for the candidate who will represent the Party and run for the office of President of the United States.

While it does provide us with the chance to exercise our right to vote, it does not allow for everyone in the Party to do so given the restrictive hours of the caucus. Situations like absence on the day of the vote or deployed military just don't fit with the caucus process.

Further, the cost of the caucus is born by the counties with little or no monetary return from those in the race.

Therefore we are petitioning the Nevada Republican Party to take action to return Nevada to a presidential primary election process. We ask our members and anyone who reads this post to print this petition and get signatures. When you have a sheet filled in, return it to the Douglas County Republican Central Committee Headquarters. The location and the address can be found on the home page of the DCRCC website.

Lincoln Reagan Day Dinner 2012

The Douglas County Republican Central Committee Lincoln / Reagan Day Dinner will be held at the Carson Valley Inn on February 12. This event gives us the opportunity to share food, views, and fun. The dinner is one of the biggest fund raisers for the DCRCC and helps our efforts to promote the Republican Party and its candidates.

As part of the celebration, a wheelbarrow of "booze" will be raffled off during the evening. However, we still need to add a few more bottles. A donation of the wine or spirit of your choice will be gladly accepted at headquarters.

The response to this dinner in the past has been overwhelming so it's important that you get your check in to reserve your spot for February 12. Don't leave it till the last minute. Get your check in not later than February 4.

NOTICE TO ALL DOUGLAS COUNTY VOTERS REGISTERED IN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

Nevada state law requires each major political party to hold a meeting of registered voters in each precinct every year during which a general election is held. All registered Republicans are entitled to attend their precinct meeting. Delegates to the 2012 Douglas County Republican Convention will be elected at each meeting by those in attendance. Caucus/Precinct meetings will convene at noon on Saturday, February 4, 2012. If you wish to participate in the organization of your party for the coming two years, attend your precinct meeting.

Overview of the Caucus/Precinct Meetings

Caucus as defined in Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary “is a closed meeting of a group of persons belonging to the same political party or faction usually to select candidates or decide on policy.”

Throughout Nevada on February 4, 2012 registered Republicans will have an opportunity to convene/discuss and vote on their Republican presidential preference. Times vary from county to county. Douglas will hold its Caucus/precinct meetings from Noon until 3:00 P.M. Attendees will be asked for photo ID and we’ll cross match names with those on the Clerk’s voter lists. The Caucuses will be held at different precinct sites throughout Douglas County. We’ll discuss and vote first. Then precinct meetings begin after ballots have been cast.

Whenever I hear the word, trivia, I get interested, not just because in reading or hearing what is seemingly unimportant information, I always find a nugget of historical knowledge. In this case there is a veritable treasure trove of history.

When you read this, do it carefully and take in the not only the history, but also the impact this person has had on our country. He did this during his lifetime, but his contributions have benefited this country through the years beyond his passing.

So read this not just as trivia, but as history.

The folks who are getting the free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now, the people who are forcing the people who pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So, the people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

Now understand this...all great democracies have committed financial suicide somewhere between 200 and 250 years after being founded. The reason? The voters figured out they could vote themselves money from the treasury by electing people who promised to give them money from the treasury in exchange for electing them.

The United States officially became a republic in 1776, 235 years ago. The number of people now getting free stuff outnumbers the people paying for the free stuff. We have one chance to change that. In 2012. Failure to change that spells the end of the United States as we know it.

Education Committee Offers First Presentation

The Education Committee presented, at the DCRCC meeting of October 13, a sample of the content that the committee would like to explore.

This short essay was written to give the membership a feel for what the colonists faced after the defeat of the British in 1781. What was their mindset with the release from the strain of war.

After Yorktown

Imagine, if you will, standing on the highlands overlooking the city of Yorktown where the York River bends to the northeast before flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. There the French fleet stands ready to block the retreat of the English general Cornwallis as well as any attempt to reinforce his beleaguered forces.

The fledgling confederation has waited a long time for the French to come around to support the colonists' efforts to attain independence. With the colonist artillery pounding English positions on both sides of the river and with broadsides from the French fleet, the English situation is untenable. Along with the acrid smell of burnt powder, the air has the sweet aroma of victory and the promise of freedom and liberty. The date is October 17, 1781.

Two days later, as their band plays the tune, "The World Turned Upside Down," the British army marches out in formation and surrenders.

It has been over six years since Lexington and Concord and now they can be free and live in unity with their brothers in arms, or so they hope.

But all is not well in post war America. The high ideals expressed by the patriots have faded with the passing of time. The individual colonies, established as free states, now face the problems of the associated obligations incurred during the period of the revolution such as debt owed to countries that financially supported them. The debt is overwhelming with no visible way of repaying it. And that is just one of the issues the newly formed country faced.

The United States, a title which did not really describe the condition at the time, was now organized under a loosely organized form of government called the Articles of Confederation.

Under this confederation, each colony exercised total independence, much as a country, but pledged themselves only to mutual defense.

There were no agreements between these country- states regarding commercial trade. Immediately after the departure of the redcoats, each of them rushed to enact onerous tariffs on trade between themselves and their neighbors.

Even the most dedicated merchants found interstate commerce a nightmare. Each border crossed demanded some sort of tax or tariff. Some duties were so steep that is was rumored that Connecticut and New Jersey were considering a joint attack on New York.

Some states having natural access via ports, exercised heavy duties at each of their borders. Merchants had not only to pay the duties on exit, but also on entry to the next state.

And to make matters worse, each state coined its own money, making free trade between states daunting at best.

Interstate commerce was in a shambles with no solution in sight.

All of this contention was caused by the main premise of the Articles of Confederation - a firm league of friendship with no central authority. After all, the revolution was fought against the tyranny of a centralized power and the colonists had no wish to encourage yet another.

So, there they were, not long after the surrender of the British with no central organizing document, no central leader, no currency, no regulation of commerce, a crippling debt equal to 2,600,000 British Pounds, and countrymen willing to pledge allegiance only to their state and not to the country. What could possibly unite these disparate people under these daunting conditions, another rebellion?

Hold the President Accountable

I'm wondering when the United States House of Representatives will come to know what constitutes grounds for impeachment as outlined in the United States Constitution, Article II, Section 4, which delineates the causes for impeachment, to wit: "Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors."

But, wait you say...what qualifies as "high crimes"? As the framers saw it, it applies to "high persons"; those holding public office are under special obligations that the rest of us are not. It places a high degree of importance to the office and the holder of that office and holds them to a higher level of accountability.

While the regular citizen is held responsible if he violates a statute, the high crime, as applies to officeholders, is that the sense of justice of the people is offended.

As an example of special obligations, the Uniform Code of Military justice can hold military personnel responsible if they disobey a lawful order, abuse their authority, dereliction of duty, or conduct unbecoming. These are violations that civilians are not held to.

Article II also prescribes the oath that the president takes, the oath that binds, not only himself, but also all those in the Executive Branch, regardless if they directly report to the president or not, to the status of special obligation described above.

It seems to me that if any department as a cabinet post organized under the executive ranch, decides to issue a policy, the president is ultimately responsible for that policy, owing to his oath.

Recently, the Department of Homeland Securiyt (DHS) issued a policy that says only those illegal aliens who have committed a crime will be subject to deportation. That infers that those who have not committed a crime after illegally entering this country will not be deported. One must wonder what distinguishes one from the other since they both have violated the law.

What is the logic that the Executive Branch is using to allow know lawbreakers to stay in this country? Why would the DHS issue such a directive? What is at the root of such a decision? Regardless of the
motivation, this directive is a violation of the oath of office that the president took to: "faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

When will the House of Representatives wake up and see the writing on the parchment so carefully crafted by the Founders? When will they collectively stand up and fulfill their obligation under the supreme law of the land and hold the president accountable for just this most recent breach of that same law? If not now, when?

The time for political game playing is over. It is time to change the status quo wherein the representatives say that they have to get reelected...don't rock the boat. That is self-serving and does not consider the dire straits that this country is in.

I say, now is the time and here is the place. Call your representatives and let them know that you are watching and want them to fulfill their duties under the Constitution. Initiate a Bill of Impeachment against President Obama for High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

For the Fallen Seals

Last week, on the 5th of August, our nation suffered a devastating loss in Afghanistan.

A CH-47 helicopter carrying twenty-two U.S. Navy SEALS aboard was shot down by Taliban forces. There were no survivors; truly, a terrible loss.

But saying there were no survivors is a serious misstatement because there are twenty-two families across America who are grieving the loss of fathers, brothers, cousins, sons, and comrades as you read this.

These families have but one thing on their minds right now: laying their loved ones to rest. The regular day-to-day things of ordinary life have receded into the fog of grief. Till the things of ordinary life come back out of that fog, these families need some outside help.

We here in Nevada are far from the home of Seal Team Six in Virginia Beach, VA, but we can reduce that gap and feel the kinship with those families by contributing what you can afford to the Naval Special Warfare Foundation and earmark it for the fallen seals in Afghanistan.

It's a small thing we can do to honor those who went in harm's way on our behalf.

In a recent letter to the Chancellor of Nevada System of Higher Education, Ron Knecht the HSHE Regent for District 9, seemed to ask the question: just how many lobbyists does it take to attend to the legislative affairs of the Nevada System of Higher Education. In the 145 years since statehood Nevada has never had to hold a special election to fill a vacant congressional seat. Small wonder that there was some confusion when Governor Sandoval created a vacancy by naming Congressman Dean Heller to fill the unexpired term of Senator Ensign. The governor set September 13, 2011 for the special election to determine Heller's successor.

Facts About the Democrat's 2011 Tax Increase Proposal

Nevada Democrats still can’t figure out that it’s a spending problem, not a revenue problem. And they want you to pay…

There used to be a sign at Nevada’s border that read: “No income tax, no sales tax, no inheritance tax, no corporation tax, no gift tax – A Debt-Free state welcomes you.”

Sounds good, right? Apparently not to Nevada’s legislative Democrats, who on May 5 introduced a proposal for the largest tax increase on Nevada citizens in history. It looks like they’re doing their best to take us as far as they can in the opposite direction.

Carson City District Court Judge James Russell has ruled in favor of major political parties deciding who should represent their party in the upcoming September special election.

A Reno Gazette Journal article reported that in his ruling, Judge Russel said that the Nevada Revised Statute in this matter was unclear.

Assembly Committee of the Whole - Reapportionment and Redistricting

Yesterday was the deadline for passage of bills in the legislature out of the first house. We’re working through the list of votes over the last few days, and will have an update soon on what bills are still alive and need to be watched, as well as what important bills are dead for the session.

Tomorrow evening, Thursday, April 28, at 5:00 pm the Assembly will meet as a committee of the whole to discuss reapportionment plans in the Assembly chamber. This meeting will be videoconferenced to room 4401 of the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas.

Governor Sandoval appoints Heller to replace Ensign

Nevada Revised Statutes require a special election to be held to fill the remainder of Congressman Heller's term of office, although the statutes are unclear on the exact conduct of such an election. SB231, allowing CCW holders to carry firearms on Nevada college campuses, also must get a vote by Tuesday or it will die. Although it passed with strong support from the Senate committee a month ago, it has not received a vote in the Senate. Please contact your Senator and Majority Leader Horsford and ask that this bill be brought to a vote: Majority Leader Steven Horsford shorsford@sen.state.nv.us or 775-684-1429.

From the Editorial Board: This letter was forwarded to the Editorial Board by a person who chooses to remain nameless. It thanks Congressman Paul Ryan for his Fiscal Budget Resolution and includes links to his television interview on the subject.

Dear Congressman Ryan,

I want to thank you for your strong stand on our budget. Your recent announcement [The Path To Prosperity] has energized many Americans to think positive; that we may actually save America from our pending fiscal crises. Your steadfast dedication to common sense and the realistic math of the debt situation is key. Very few of your counterparts seem to understand what you do; that you do not waste your time with the "media" attacking what you know is right.

As you know sir, this battle will get ugly and painful. I pray that God will continue giving you and your staff the strength to remain resolute as you work down this path of convincing your counterparts of what is right and necessary for America's fiscal path.

I am not in your district, but felt compelled to thank you in your role as Budget Director. I'm impressed with your leadership style and will encourage my representative from Nevada, Congressman Dean Heller to work with you. I will also share these thoughts with my friends and relatives and ask them to remain engaged in the process and support your efforts.

Reapportionment Education Budget Meetings

Here’s the latest information on the Reapportionment meetings to be held in Fallon, Reno and Carson City .

Please notice that the Fallon meeting on Thursday the 24th will be followed by a meeting on K-12 budgeting, and the Reno meeting will be followed by a hearing on higher education funding.

Also, for those of you that are NvSRCC members note that the Carson City meeting is scheduled at the same time as the state central committee spring meeting. Since you won’t be able to attend the Carson City reapportionment hearing because of this conflict, please be sure to attend either the Fallon or Reno meeting if you want to give comments on reapportionment.
