When presented with the question of paying taxes to Cesar, Jesus saw they were trying to trap Him and used a coin to show that since they were part of the Roman system, they should pay the taxes to that system. As long as our government doesn’t conflict with God’s laws, we should obey their laws, but remember that our true allegiance lies with God.

Prayer and fasting hold the keys to spiritual breakthrough. When the disciples couldn’t cast a demon out of a boy, Jesus told them that it would only come out by prayer and fasting. There are many accounts of others in the Bible who fasted and prayed for breakthrough as well, including Jesus.

Answered prayer didn’t affect the faith of those who trusted God. Zechariah and Elizabeth remained faithful to God even though their prayer for a child wasn’t answered right away. God eventually did give them a child, but their dedication to Him was not based on that.

Angered by God’s Mercy

After Nineveh’s great repentance, Jonah was angry that God had compassion on the people and didn’t wipe them out. When Jonah left town to sulk, God used a leafy plant and a worm to teach Jonah about His concern for the people of Nineveh. We don’t know Jonah’s response to that lesson, but should God not be concerned about those who we feel deserve judgment and our attitude about them?

Time to Repent | Jonah – Week 5

After Jonah’s repentance, he was quick to obey God and go to Nineveh when God called him there a second time. When the people of Nineveh heard the message of God’s coming judgment, they quickly repented, believing that His compassion would spare them from it. God’s primary desire is not to bring judgment, but to offer compassion and forgiveness.

Jonah decided he would rather die than repent and do what God called him to do, so when the storm continued to worsen, he had the sailors throw him overboard, which calmed the storm. God wasn’t done with Jonah though, as He provided a great fish to swallow Jonah so he wouldn’t die.
