Downton Abbey Season 4 Official Air Date Announced

It had been previously reported by unofficial sources that January 5th, 2014 would be the US Downton Abbey season 4 premiere date and now that date has been made official by PBS Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton at the PBS Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, May 14th.

This is one day earlier then the US season 3 premiere date of January 6, 2013.

The show will run for 8 weeks concluding on February 23, 2014.

Hugh was nominated for Best Actor in a Comdey Series for Twenty Twelve, which had four nominations and won for Best Situation Comedy.

Could Downton Abbey Run for Six More Years?

As fans of Downton Abbey we all wonder how long the show will run for.

Downton Abbey's executive producer, Gareth Neame, commented on this subject recently at BritWeek's Downton Abbey celebration in Santa Monica, California.

It’s the news “Downton Abbey” fans have been hoping for — the Emmy-winning show could last another six years if producers get their way.

“Downton” creator Gareth Neame told the Daily News he hopes to keep the white hot drama going for up to 10 seasons.

“I think it is going to go on for a while,” he said. “Right now the show is still growing in the U.S. and it would be awful to think of the show ending.”

“I would rather let the show run between four and 10 years, I imagine,” Neame said

“I would rather that we picked the right year (to end) and that in 20 years time the show was loved rather than we went on a season too long and people fell out of love with it,” he said.

Neame also comments on the possibility of bringing on other writers if Julian Fellowes steps away from Downton to concentrate on his new NBC project The Gilded Age.

Downton Abbey Mothers Play Central Role in Third Season

Check out this interesting article in the National Review Online by Melissa Langsam Braunstein titled The Mothers of Downton Abbey, it discusses the big role mothers play Downton Abbey's third season.

The show’s women acted as prisms, reflecting and contrasting one other’s personalities and mothering styles. So much of what defines these women’s lives and informs their identities is motherhood, in large part because of the era they live in but also because of who these particular women are.

Mary, Cora, Martha, Violet, Sybil, Isobel and Susan are all discussed.

E! News' Melanie Bromley caught up with executive producer Gareth Naeme at BritWeek's Downton Abbey's Vintage Party, where he set the record straight on Mary's love life in the new season, as well as what fans can expect the show to look like without Matthew!

He says Mary is not looking for any suitors but that does not mean they are not looking for her. He also comments on the casting of Downton's first black character, jazz singer Jack Ross, played by actor Gary Carr.

New Project for Maggie Smith - 'My Old Lady'

Maggie Smith to star in film version of Israel Horovitz's My Old Lady.

Downton Abbey's Dowager Countess, Dame Maggie Smith has signed onto a new project, Israel Horovitz's My Old Lady.

The film is a Paris-based dramatic comedy and marks the feature film directorial debut for playwright and screenwriter Horovitz, who adapted his award-winning stage play for the screen.

It's the story of a down-and-out New Yorker who travels to Paris to liquidate a huge, valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father. He discovers a refined old lady (Smith) living in the apartment with her daughter and learns that she and his father were lovers for more than 50 years.

The film also stars Kevin Kline,Jane Birkin and Dominique Pinon.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Paris in September.

1928 Jewelry Company Signs Deal for Downton Abbey Jewelry Line

The 1928 Jewelry Co., maker of vintage-inspired fashion jewelry, has inked a license with the show on a collection of jewelry and accessories inspired by the show. The brand was already familiar to “Downton Abbey’s” costume designer Caroline McCall. “[McCall] mentioned that whenever they needed vintage jewelry in the U.K., they would go to a local department store and 1928 was always the go-to [brand],” Christina Lovejoy, 1928’s design director, told WWD. “There was a lot of mutual respect there because we were already seeing our work on the show. It really was a fantastic match.”

The line will consist of about 36 boxed styles and 70 carded styles of necklaces, earrings, hair pins and brooches, with prices ranging from $22 to $38. It is slated to hit Macy’s, Amazon.com and specialty retailers, as well as U.K. department stores House of Fraser, Debenhams and John Lewis, in the fall.

EW talked with Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame and got the 411 on Downton Abbey's cameo in Iron Man 3:

Executive producer Gareth Neame had yet to see the film when EW chatted with him prior to its release, but explained that it came together rather simply. ”They just approached us,” he said. “[The Iron Man producers] just said, ‘We think the character should be watching Downton in the hospital bed.’ And we looked at the context and thought ‘That’s good. We’ll do it.’”

Laura Carmichael On Downton Abbey Season 4, An Ungloved Lady Edith, Ryan Gosling as Lady Edith's Love Interest and More

The Telegraph was able to interview Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael at Brit Week in LA on May 3.

Below is an excerpt:

Poor Lady Edith Crawley. Jilted at the altar and living in the shadow of her elder sister, the glamorous Lady Mary, it's been a hard road. But the upcoming fourth series of the unstoppable Downton Abbey will see her blossom.

"They're very interesting times," says Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith. "The exciting thing for me, and for Edith, is we can show her when she's not at Downton, and what happens. There is a shadow over the house but elsewhere she can kind of reinvent herself, and she's having this exciting time, and she's writing.

"I'm having so much fun with this series. She's really embracing the modern way of life, she's working, and of course she gets to go to London and I get some great clothes. She's evolving. Its really fun playing Edith with the bit between her teeth and going after what she wants."

Asked which Hollywood star she would want as Lady Edith's love interest in the show, she told The Telegraph: "Ryan Gosling. I think he would be brilliant in Downton, and it would be a waste if it doesn't happen."

Gosling, star of The Notebook, has yet to sign, but there will be no shortage of drama in Lady Edith's love life. Asked if she will find a man, Carmichael said "I can't possibly reveal," but added: "As ever with Julian and the show there are ups and downs and twists and turns to the story, and all of it is desperately exciting."

PBS Announces Summer 2013 Line-up

This past week PBS announced their 2013 Summer Season programming.

Of particular interest to me and maybe to you is the 'Secrets Of' series that takes a look at some of the UK's most fascinating castles.

Last summer it was Secrets of Highclere Castle and this summer there are three new episodes to look forward to:

SECRETS OF HENRY VIII’S PALACE

Behind the royal pleasure palace Hampton Court’s grand façade, opulent rooms and hidden corners lie the dark secrets of storied kings and queens. MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! “Inspector Lewis, Series VI”

Kevin Whately returns as Inspector Lewis for the sixth season of the popular series. He and his young partner, DS Hathaway (Laurence Fox), continue solving cases in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. Sundays, June 16-30, 9:00-10:30 p.m. ET

· “Down Among the Fearful” – June 16

When a psychic is found murdered, Inspector Lewis and DS Hathaway discover that the victim is really an Oxford psychology research fellow. As they probe further, the truth behind the psychic’s double life unravels, revealing numerous suspects.

· “The Ramblin’ Boy” – June 23

With DS Hathaway on holiday, Inspector Lewis is assigned a new partner to investigate the discovery of an elderly man’s body in a field. Finding that the man had already been embalmed, the inquiry leads to a funeral home and those connected to it, including one of Lewis’ former colleagues. Peter Davison (“Doctor Who”) guest stars.

· “Intelligent Design” – June 30

Lewis and Hathaway are called in to examine the brutal death of a chemistry professor — recently released from prison — who may be connected to the discovery of a murdered Oxford student lost for 15 years. As more casualties and suspects emerge, Lewis considers his future on the force. Edward Fox (“Miss Marple,” “Foyle’s War”) guest stars.

INDEPENDENT LENS

PBS’ Emmy Award-winning weekly series INDEPENDENT LENS, hosted by actor Stanley Tucci, concludes with“The Revolutionary Optimists,” which follows lawyer-turned-social entrepreneur Amlan Ganguly, who has transformed some of the poorest slums of Kolkata, India, by empowering children to become leaders in improving health and sanitation. Using street theater, dance and data as their weapons, the children have cut malaria and diarrhea rates in half, increased polio vaccination rates and turned garbage dumps into playing fields. POV “Homegoings”

The beauty and grace of African-American funerals are brought to life through the eyes of Harlem funeral director Isaiah Owens. The documentary takes an up-close look at the rarely seen world of undertaking in the black community, drawing on a rich palette of tradition, history and celebration. By Christine Turner. Monday, June 24, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET

ANNIE: IT’S THE HARD-KNOCK LIFE, FROM SCRIPT TO STAGE

It’s been 35 years since the little orphan Annie first stepped onto a Broadway stage. The show-stopping musicalAnnie, its characters and its songs are timeless and classic, and for the musical’s return to Broadway, this documentary offers a memorable behind-the-scenes look at every step of the production number “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” from the earliest phases of discussion among the creative team, rehearsals with actors, to opening night. PBS programming in July is steeped in history and secrets. After a re-airing of the 1985 Ken Burns film THE STATUE OF LIBERTY and a film about the journeys of explorers Lewis and Clark, PBS welcomes the star-studded 2013 edition of the popular Independence Day special, A CAPITOL FOURTH. Global history and religion get the spotlight in a full night dedicated to Buddha, anchored by a fascinating new SECRETS OF THE DEAD episode, “Bones of the Buddha,” which unravels the controversy surrounding the leader’s sacred remains. The episode is preceded by THE BUDDHA, acclaimed filmmaker David Grubin’s documentary about the mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment as he sat beneath a tree. Another SECRETS OF THE DEAD premiere, “Ultimate Tut,” sheds new light on King Tutankhamen. More royal secrets are uncovered in two specials, SECRETS OF ALTHORP – THE SPENCERS and SECRETS OF CHATSWORTH. POV

The award-winning POV (Point of View) is the longest-running showcase to feature the work of today’s best independent documentary filmmakers. Mondays, June 24 – August 26 at 10:00 p.m. ET.

· “Special Flight” – July 1, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET

Made in Switzerland, the film is a dramatic account of the plight of 25 undocumented foreigners at the Frambois detention center in Geneva, Switzerland, and of the wardens who struggle to reconcile humane values with the harsh realities of a strict deportation system. By Fernand Melgar.

· “Herman’s House” – July 8, 10:00-11:30 p.m. ET

The film takes the viewer inside the unlikely 12-year friendship between Herman Wallace, possibly the longest-serving prisoner in solitary confinement in the United States, and artist Jackie Sumell. Imprisoned in 1967 for a robbery he admits, Wallace was subsequently sentenced to life for a killing he vehemently denies. Imagining his “dream home,” a game proposed by Sumell, became an interrogation of justice and punishment in America. By Angad Singh Bhalla.

· “Only the Young” – July 15, 10:00-11:30 p.m. ET

Follow three unconventional Christian teenagers coming of age in a small Southern California town. Skateboarders Garrison and Kevin, and Garrison’s on-and-off girlfriend, Skye, wrestle with the eternal questions of youth: friendship, true love and the promise of the future. Their lives are also touched by the distress signals of contemporary America — foreclosed homes, abandoned businesses and adults in financial trouble. By Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims.

· “High Tech, Low Life” – July 22, 10:00-11:30 p.m. ET

Trail two of China’s first citizen-reporters as they document the underside of the country’s rapid economic development. A search for truth and fame inspires young vegetable seller “Zola” to report on censored news stories from the cities, while retired businessman “Tiger Temple” chronicles the struggles of rural villagers. Land grabs, pollution, rising poverty, local corruption and the growing willingness of ordinary people to speak out are grist for these two bloggers who navigate China’s evolving censorship regulations and challenge the boundaries of free speech. · “Neurotypical” – July 29, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET

Explore autism from the point of view of autistic people themselves. Four-year-old Violet, teenaged Nicholas and adult Paula occupy different positions on the autism spectrum. How they and the people around them work out their perceptual and behavioral differences becomes a remarkable reflection of the “neurotypical” world — the world of the non-autistic — revealing inventive adaptations on each side and an emerging critique of both what it means to be normal and what it means to be human. LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, sent by President Thomas Jefferson to find the fabled Northwest Passage, led the most important expedition in American history — a voyage of danger and discovery from St. Louis to the headwaters of the Missouri River, over the Continental Divide to the Pacific. It was the United States’ first exploration of the West and one of the nation’s most enduring adventures. Filmmaker Ken Burns tells the remarkable story of the entire corps — not just the two famous captains, but the young army men, French-Canadian boatmen, Clark’s African-American slave and the Shoshone woman Sacagawea, who brought along her infant son. A huge stone coffer uncovered in Northern India in 1898 contained five reliquary jars, one of which bore an inscription that seemed to say it contained the remains of the Buddha himself. But doubt and scandal have hung over this amazing find. For some, the whole thing is an elaborate hoax. For others, it is no less than the final resting place of the leader of one of the world’s great religions, a sage who died nearly 2,500 years ago. Renowned historian Charles Allen sets out to solve this mystery, once and for all.

THE BUDDHA

Two-and-a-half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. Primetime in August spotlights two new MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! productions (one a modern legal drama, the other a new look at a Hitchcock classic) and two independent films from the series POV, along with several new specials. The comprehensive three-part series THE LIFE OF MUHAMMAD traces the often-misunderstood religious leader, and SIDE BY SIDE, with Keanu Reeves, provides an enthralling look at technological advances in the film industry. In addition, PBS will commemorate the 50^th anniversary of the March on Washington with a multi-platform campaign to be announced at a later date.

Sophie McShera visited This Morning with Holly and Phillip to promote her new UK series, The Job Lot.

Of course Downton Abbey was discussed!

Sophie revealed that Daisy has "got up in the world a bit" thanks to being promoted and is now able to wash her hair in Downton Abbey season 4.

Sophie also said not to expect to see Daisy lucky in love any time soon and that Alfred is still pining away for Ivy.

Downton Abbey's First Black Character Has Been Cast

ITV announced today that Gary Carr will play jazz singer Jack Ross in Downton Abbey season 4:

We're delighted to announce that Gary Carr (Death in Paradise, Bluestone 42), has joined the cast of Downton Abbey.

Carr will play a jazz singer called Jack Ross, a charming and charismatic young man. He joins new cast members Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Nigel Harman, Joanna David and Dame Harriet Walter who are all set to star in the fourth series.

Carnival Films’ Managing Director, Gareth Neame said, “We are delighted to introduce another fantastic, dynamic character to Downton Abbey.

"His addition will bring interesting twists to the drama which we can’t wait for viewers to see in Series four”.

As well as filming an eight-part fourth series, Downton Abbey will return at Christmas 2013 with another feature length episode.

The new series will see the return of Shirley MacLaine as Martha Levinson alongside series regulars Hugh Bonneville, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Jim Carter.
