Downtown Bend is growing and so is the Downtown Bend Business Association. As part of this growth, the vision and branding for Downtown are transforming. The DBBA is excited to announce Miguel Edwards as the new Downtown Bend photographer. Edwards is helping the non-profit showcase the history, vibrancy, shops, restaurants, and services in Downtown Bend to a larger community.

“We are incredibly lucky to live in a City with a thriving Downtown,” says Aisling, Executive Director of the DBBA, “Downtown Bend is the heart of our community – and it has been for over 100 years.  Photos that document and celebrate our history, culture, and vitality are a great asset for not only Downtown Bend but for our entire Bend community.”

The decision to bring on Edwards comes from the request by Downtown Bend business and building owners. He has gained recognition recently from designing and building the cauldron for the Opening Ceremony of Special Olympics USA Games last summer in Seattle. The Cauldron “Hope Rising” will be featured at Oregon Winterfest in February. Miguel has worked with the Cities of Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Seattle, and Bellevue… to name a few. This December the book, Art in Seattle’s Public Spaces by Miguel Edwards and Jim Rupp with University of Washington Press hits the shelves (and Amazon). This month Edwards’ photograph is the cover image for Western Home Journal’s first Winter Book

The Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl is a time for friends to come together and have some wacky fun! Afterward, they’re hosting an Ugly Sweater Dance Party.

After the tree lighting, Santa Claus will go to Beach Hut Deli’s patio, next to the fire pit, for children to have a chance to speak with him and get their picture taken with him. Santa Claus will be in this spot every Saturday in December from 12-4 pm.

The event also benefits local charities; Family Access Network and NeighborImpact. People can also donate a Christmas present or ornament that will go on or beneath the tree. All proceeds from those donations will go to Bend Cares.

The Operations Manager is an important element of the program’s visibility and is expected to be a ‘working’ manager, actively participating in the daily tasks and duties.

The Operations Manager implements and oversees the streetscape maintenance budget and directs activities related to watering/flowers, electrical, landscaping, hardscape repair, lighting, banners, event logistics, holiday decorations, snow clearance, cleaning & sanitation, and other contractor and staff work within the EID.

The Operations Manager maintains and manages the operation’s equipment and supplies, and works closely with District business owners and managers within the EID on streetscape and landscaping maintenance matters, as well as with City agencies, contractors and utilities.

Primary Functions:

• Completes and oversees grounds operations, managing beautification, maintenance, and EID improvements.

• Instrumental in the development and implementation of initiatives related to the EID’s outdoor environmental features, including but not limited to; streetscape, landscaping, parking, irrigation, electrical lighting, and snow clearance operations.

• Oversees a schedule and budget for the regular streetscape maintenance and beautification within the EID, coordinating and supervising the work of contractors and maintenance staff. Ensures all services are being performed as required.

• Develops new community programs, enrolls volunteers and optimizes current systems and work processes for efficiency.

• Manages and safeguards all DBBA equipment.

• Ensures a safe environment for employees and the general public.

• Performs consistent and timely work.

• Increases the use of the banner program with a goal of 90% capacity at all times.

• Oversees holiday décor installation and removal.

• Reports on and evaluates streetscape maintenance program effectiveness and develops new plans to improve service. Manages and develops reports for Board of Directors, the City of Bend and other stakeholders

• Works with and maintains a professional relationship with City and other public service agencies and utility providers.

• Ensures service expectations are being met through regular contact with the customer; evaluates the quality of services by measuring individuals employee performances compared to expectations and overall program performance, making adjustments a necessary.

• Actively engages customers, representatives, stakeholders, and outside agencies to collaborate on solutions to identified issues and to set a course for continual program evolution. Implements new local strategies to continually improve service delivery.

• Must have and use own vehicle (standard mileage compensation applies)
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to drive/operate a lift, ATV, trailer, large truck (UHual), etc.

• Must have a desire to work with a close-knit team to make a difference in the Bend Community

The Downtown Bend Business Association (DBBA) is a local nonprofit that is dedicated to increasing the vitality of Downtown Bend.  The DBBA provides the cleaning, decorations, flowers, events, banners, marketing, advocacy and growth planning for the Downtown Bend Economic Improvement District (EID).

Our Bend Community loves Downtown with such wholeheartedness, that every year they put on Bend Oktoberfest to raise funds for Downtown Bend.  With donations from all the local breweries, sponsorship from businesses citywide and almost 300 volunteers, Bend Oktoberfest not only raises necessary funds for Downtown Bend – it offers the community a fun way to celebrate together with silly games (like the chicken dance or bratwurst toss), feats of strength (like the hammerschlagen), and (of course) the much anticipated Weiner Dog Race.

The great news is that you can join the Bend Community in making Bend Oktoberfest a success & raising funds for Downtown Bend.  Here is how: First and foremost, you can attend the event on Sept 21^st & 22^nd, with the knowledge that every beer you drink or chicken hat that you buy is raising funds for Downtown Bend.  Second, the DBBA is still in need of volunteers for this year’s Bend Oktoberfest.  Each volunteer receives a free Oktoberfest stein, a free beer token, a free bratwurst, and huge thanks from the staff and board at the DBBA.  To learn more about the event, or to sign up to volunteer, visit www.bendoktoberfest.com.

Welcoming Week takes place Sept. 14 to 23. Festivities begin with a Launch Celebration at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, at St. Charles Health System. Elected officials and community members will address attendees with thoughts about the importance of Welcoming Week. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend.

Community events, including the “Borderless Stories” photography exhibit, a book reading, workshops and educational presentations, Latino Fest, a food truck event and a soccer tournament will provide residents ample opportunity to participate in Welcoming Week.

In addition to attending Welcoming Week events, Bend area residents are encouraged to participate in a social media photo contest from Sept. 14 to 23.

To enter the contest, participants must upload a photo with an “I’m a Welcomer” sign to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Tag the City of Bend page and use the hashtags #IWelcome and #WelcomingWeek to complete the entry. One photo will be randomly selected each day to win a prize pack of Welcoming Week and City of Bend goodies.
