*Ok, ok, ok, there might also be this thing called SXSW that might also be high point for Austinites in March...

Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times called the bovine crime saga an “intense, shattering film, a confident and accomplished punch-in-the-gut debut,” while Rex Reed of The New York Observer says the film an “extremely original work...fascinating and unforgettable.” For Stephen Holden at The New York Times, BULLHEAD was “impressive,” adding that it was “a stark tragedy of masculinity and its chemical boundaries.”

“Forget Brad Pitt’s baseball drama or dapper Frenchman Jean Dujardin; BULLHEAD is the Oscar nominee you should be obsessing over,” says GQ Magazine in an article titled “Why You Need To See BULLHEAD,” adding that “it might be one of the best films of the year.”

For James Rocchi at MSN Movies, the Belgian tragedy features an “Oscar-level lead performance (Matthias Schoenaerts) that is part RAGING BULL and part Oedipus Rex.” Comparisons to De Niro’s unforgettable turn as RAGING BULL's “Jake La Motta," who is also robbed of his dignity and manhood, extends in Scott Tobias' review for NPR where he calls Schoenaerts' performance “unforgettable,” also adding that the film earned “a largely deserved Oscar nomination.”

Michaël and Matthias have been busy traveling back-and-forth from New York City to Los Angeles non-stop for the past month promoting their Academy Award contender and have conducted interviews with some of the world’s largest media outlets. During a pool-side interview, Roskam told Mark Olsen of The Los Angeles Times for their Oscar Envelope issue, “once you start playing the game, you want to win it.”

"For me, I feel like it's going to the world championship of cinema, and I'm already there in the finals," Roskam told The New York Times' Carpetbagger, "I cannot lose, I can only win, so I'm just going to enjoy it." The Belgian duo also conducted a video interview with Reuters on their surprise Oscar nomination which you can see here.

Exclusive clips of BULLHEAD have debuted this week on The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, Awards Daily, Hulu and HitFix. Roskam provided audio commentary exclusively for IFC.com to the magnificent theatrical trailer cut by UK's Intermission.

Drafthouse Films will expand BULLHEAD this coming Friday to theaters in San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Seattle, Washington DC, Boston, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston, Minneapolis, Portland, Denver, Salt Lake City, Winchester, Tucson, Cincinnati, Columbus, Asheville and Northampton. 

The Oscar-Nominated Drafthouse Films release BULLHEAD opens this Friday in three select cities: NYC, LA, and Austin, Texas. The contender for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award has a new trailer and one-sheet out, and we've got some new clips for you. Hitflix has this exclusive clip showing a significant moment in main character Jacky's childhood; then watch our new clip below revealing Jacky and Bruno as adults. Both clips reveal the powerful, elegant nature of this stunning film. 

Star Matthias Schoenaerts spent two years preparing for his role as steroid-user Jacky Vanmarsenille in Michaël R. Roskam's BULLHEAD, gaining sixty pounds of muscle through "a diet of 3000 tins of tuna, several hundred chickens and plenty of oats, rice and pasta combined with an exhausting iron pumping workout regimen." He looks tough, doesn't he? Tough and huge. The film is being released to theaters in these cities this Friday, February 17, and will be released to a wider market after that. 

THE FP:

The redband trailer for manic, dystopian dance battle film THE FP has been revealed and it's an absolute blast. 

Directed by Frazier Park natives and fourth-generation filmmaker brothers Jason and Brandon Trost,

“THE FP is an ambitious, explosive and hilarious indie film achievement,” says Evan Husney, Director of Drafthouse Films, “and we are delighted to expose the Trost’s warped vision with the largest audience possible this March.” Draftouse Films CEO/Founder Tim League elaborated, “as fellow fans of films like KICKBOXER and ROCKY IV we’ve been immersed in the films THE FP lovingly homages.”

Commenting on their filmmaking journey, co-director/writer/star Jason Trost said “it's both exciting and bittersweet. BULLHEAD, the feature film debut of writer/director Michael R. Roskam, was acquired by Drafthouse Films following its US premiere at Fantastic Fest, where it won “Best Picture” in the AMD/Dell Next Wave Competition, which highlights first-time feature filmmakers. 

BULLHEAD, an underdog pick for Best Foreign Language Film, surprised everyone with its Academy Award nomination. Its journey to the coveted nomination began as an unexpected submission for the category from its home country Belgium, earning its deserved accolades by being a bold, original story. BULLHEAD is just the second film released by Drafthouse Films, following the critically acclaimed FOUR LIONS, and it marks the first Academy Award nomination for the young distributor.
