Michaël R. Roskam’s emotionally powerful Oscar nominee BULLHEAD opened yesterday in Los Angeles (The Cinefamily, Laemmle Monica 4/NoHo 7/Playhouse 7), New York City (Angelika Film Center, AMC Empire 25) and Austin (Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar/Village/Lake Creek) to stellar reviews and press coverage in mainstream publications across the country.

Kenneth Turan of The Los Angeles Times called the bovine crime saga an “intense, shattering film, a confident and accomplished punch-in-the-gut debut,” while Rex Reed of The New York Observer says the film an “extremely original work...fascinating and unforgettable.” For Stephen Holden at The New York Times, BULLHEAD was “impressive,” adding that it was “a stark tragedy of masculinity and its chemical boundaries.”

“Forget Brad Pitt’s baseball drama or dapper Frenchman Jean Dujardin; BULLHEAD is the Oscar nominee you should be obsessing over,” says GQ Magazine in an article titled “Why You Need To See BULLHEAD,” adding that “it might be one of the best films of the year.”

For James Rocchi at MSN Movies, the Belgian tragedy features an “Oscar-level lead performance (Matthias Schoenaerts) that is part RAGING BULL and part Oedipus Rex.” Comparisons to De Niro’s unforgettable turn as RAGING BULL's “Jake La Motta," who is also robbed of his dignity and manhood, extends in Scott Tobias' review for NPR where he calls Schoenaerts' performance “unforgettable,” also adding that the film earned “a largely deserved Oscar nomination.”

Michaël and Matthias have been busy traveling back-and-forth from New York City to Los Angeles non-stop for the past month promoting their Academy Award contender and have conducted interviews with some of the world’s largest media outlets. During a pool-side interview, Roskam told Mark Olsen of The Los Angeles Times for their Oscar Envelope issue, “once you start playing the game, you want to win it.”

"For me, I feel like it's going to the world championship of cinema, and I'm already there in the finals," Roskam told The New York Times' Carpetbagger, "I cannot lose, I can only win, so I'm just going to enjoy it." The Belgian duo also conducted a video interview with Reuters on their surprise Oscar nomination which you can see here.

Exclusive clips of BULLHEAD have debuted this week on The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, Awards Daily, Hulu and HitFix. Roskam provided audio commentary exclusively for IFC.com to the magnificent theatrical trailer cut by UK's Intermission.

	BULLHEAD:

The contender for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award has a new trailer and one-sheet out, and we've got some new clips for you. Hitflix has this exclusive clip showing a significant moment in main character Jacky's childhood; then watch our new clip below revealing Jacky and Bruno as adults.

Star Matthias Schoenaerts spent two years preparing for his role as steroid-user Jacky Vanmarsenille in Michaël R. Roskam's BULLHEAD, gaining sixty pounds of muscle through "a diet of 3000 tins of tuna, several hundred chickens and plenty of oats, rice and pasta combined with an exhausting iron pumping workout regimen." He looks tough, doesn't he? Tough and huge. The film is being released to theaters in these cities this Friday, February 17, and will be released to a wider market after that.

	THE FP:

The redband trailer for manic, dystopian dance battle film THE FP has been revealed and it's an absolute blast.

Directed by Frazier Park natives and fourth-generation filmmaker brothers Jason and Brandon Trost,

“THE FP is an ambitious, explosive and hilarious indie film achievement,” says Evan Husney, Director of Drafthouse Films, “and we are delighted to expose the Trost’s warped vision with the largest audience possible this March.” Draftouse Films CEO/Founder Tim League elaborated, “as fellow fans of films like KICKBOXER and ROCKY IV we’ve been immersed in the films THE FP lovingly homages.”

Commenting on their filmmaking journey, co-director/writer/star Jason Trost said “it's both exciting and bittersweet. We've been working on this movie for so long, it's almost like sending our kid off to college. But, you know... hopefully our kid makes a name for itself and doesn't piss the world off too much.” Co-director/cinematographer Brandon Trost added, "there is no better place to release our mutant spawn into the world than with Drafthouse Films. They totally get it."

THE FP will be released to theaters in these cities on February 25, so keep your eyes peeled!

	COMIN' AT YA! 3D:

Watch the exciting trailer for three-dimensional western epic COMIN' AT YA! 3D below.

COMIN' AT YA! 3D will be released in these Texas theaters on February 24, so essentially, you should clear your entire movie calendar this month and devote it all to Drafthouse Films. You won't be sorry, trust.

See the brand new trailer for COMIN' AT YA! 3D, a wild, rousing, three-dimensional spaghetti western explosion that throws fiery arrows, punches, breasts, bats, cowboy corpses and diapers (?!) at your face as you sit in stunned, satisfied silence. The film, from producer and star Tony Anthony and Italian genre film vet Ferdinando Baldi, astonished audiences when it was first released in 1981, and a recent, digitally restored version blew us away at Fantastic Fest last year. The film was such a raucous success that Drafthouse Films acquired the North American rights to distribute the insanity to a Texas theater near you. From the press release:

AUSTIN, TX – Friday, February 3, 2012 – Drafthouse Films’ COMIN’ AT YA! 3D gets an exclusive Texas launch on February 24. The film was acquired by the Alamo Drafthouse’s distribution label following the world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2011. An indie sensation in the 1980s, the film was credited with igniting a resurgence of studio-produced 3D films. And now, COMIN’ AT YA! 3D marks the first fully restored classic 3D film using state-of-the-art RealD technology.

“COMIN’ AT YA! 3D is the kind of experience you can only get in a theater, and we’re proud to offer it to our home state first,” said Drafthouse Films founder and CEO Tim League.

A tale of a vengeful gunslinger determined to rescue his kidnapped wife from a gang of ruthless bandits, COMIN’ AT YA! 3D is the 3D movie that does exactly what you want a 3D movie to do. It hits you with a ludicrous barrage of flying fists, flaming arrows, boobs, and everything else you can imagine. It’s pure, unadulterated fun all the way through, mimicking the experience of an amusement park ride. Called “a lof of fun” (Film School Rejects) and “a great experience & 3D showcase” (HitFix) COMIN’ AT YA! 3D is a crowd-pleasing event with the most insane, unsubtle 3D gimmicks known to man.

Star Matthias Schoenaerts spent two years preparing for his role as Jacky Vanmarsenille in Michaël R.

Schoenaerts will next star with Marion Cotillard in Jacques Audiards' (A PROPHET) RUST AND BONE, recently acquired by Sony Pictures Classics. See his "career-defining, powerfully physical lead performance" (VARIETY) in the Academy Award-nominated BULLHEAD.

As you can imagine, we're pretty outrageously stoked around here about BULLHEAD's Oscar nomination, and we've been dying to get as many people as possible to see this wonderful film since. And here's your chance! BULLHEAD will expand to new theatres in February and even more after that. Read the press release below:

Los Angeles, CA – Friday, January 27, 2012 – Drafthouse Films announces that Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award-nominee BULLHEAD will open Friday, February 17 in New York, Los Angeles and Austin in the following theaters and will expand to new markets following its initial limited release.

New York – AMC Empire & Angelika

Los Angeles – Laemmle Santa Monica, Laemmle NoHo, Laemmle Playhouse & The Cinefamily

Austin – Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar & Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek

BULLHEAD, the feature film debut of writer/director Michael R. Roskam, was acquired by Drafthouse Films following its US premiere at Fantastic Fest, where it won “Best Picture” in the AMD/Dell Next Wave Competition, which highlights first-time feature filmmakers.

BULLHEAD, an underdog pick for Best Foreign Language Film, surprised everyone with its Academy Award nomination. Its journey to the coveted nomination began as an unexpected submission for the category from its home country Belgium, earning its deserved accolades by being a bold, original story. BULLHEAD is just the second film released by Drafthouse Films, following the critically acclaimed FOUR LIONS, and it marks the first Academy Award nomination for the young distributor.

BULLHEAD has gathered international acclaim, winning 25 awards to date including the “Best Actor” prize at Palm Springs IFF 2012, going to Matthias Schoenaerts, who packed on 60 pounds of muscle for the role and was honored for his “superb portrayal of an innocent and sensitive man trapped in a truculent body.” Schoenaerts is next scheduled to headline RUST AND BONE with Marion Cottilard from director Jacques Audiard (A PROPHET).

The film also won the "New Auteurs Audience Award" and "New Auteurs Critic's Prize For Best Actor" at 2011 AFI festival and Roskam was named one of Variety’s “10 Directors to Watch.”

Michael R. Roskamʼs BULLHEAD is an emotionally driven tale of revenge, redemption and fate set against the backdrop of the Belgian bovine hormone mafia. It is an exciting tragedy about fate, lost innocence and friendship, about crime and punishment, but also about conflicting desires and the irreversibility of a man’s destiny. Domineering cattle farmer Jacky Vanmarsenille (Matthias Schoenaerts in a ferocious breakout performance), constantly pumped on steroids and hormones, initiates a shady deal with a notorious mafioso meat trader. When an investigating federal agent is assassinated and a woman from his traumatic past resurfaces, Jacky must confront his demons and face the far-reaching consequences of his decisions.

BULLHEAD is distributed domestically by Drafthouse Films.
