The 2013 issue of DUH won the award for Best Student Magazine. Marina Shawd was editor of the publication, and Katie Minnick was art director. Jeff Inman served as faculty adviser.

Also a finalist in the Best Student Magazine category was the spring 2013 issue of Drake Magazine, edited by Jeff Nelson. Elyssa Yesnes was art director. Their adviser was Lori Blachford.

Two Drake magazines designed as iPad apps were named finalists in the Best Digital-Only Student Publication: Urban Plains and Think. Kerri Sorrell guided the Urban Plains team, Lindsay Susla was art director, and Jeff Inman adviser. Think’s editor was Olivia Young. Rebecca Boneschans was art director, and Jill Van Wyke adviser. The winner of the digital category was the University of Missouri’s Vox.

The regional winners were announced at the Region 7 conference in Overland Park, Kan., on April 26. The national awards will be handed out in May.

Region 7 includes schools from Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska.

“The fact that our students are so successful in the publications categories speaks to their ability to managed the entire production process, not just tackle one article at a time,” said Lori Blachford, the Peggy Fisher and Larry Stelter Chair of Magazine Journalism at Drake.

“I’m also delighted to see the students and faculty recognized for their work in digital production,” Blachford said. “That has been a focus for us ever since 2010, when the first iPad was sold. By fall of that year, the first issue of the digital-only Urban Plains was an iPad app.”

Terry Branstad told Advanced Reporting students Iowa operates an “honest, open, responsive” government. During a 40-minute visit to Meredith Hall, the governor said “The state’s financial house is in order” and the unemployment rate has dropped from 6.1% to 4.4%.

The 5-term governor appeared at the invitation of adjunct instructor Mike Glover, retired AP political reporter. Branstad is running for another 4-year term on the Republican ticket.

Raised on a farm near Leland, in extreme Northern Iowa, his career has included financial advising, private law practice, three terms in the Iowa House of Representatives, a term as lieutenant governor and, most recently, the presidency of Des Moines University, the state’s osteopathic medical college.

The governor said two Drake Law students initially urged him to return to politics. “The hardest one to convince (about the pay cut) was my wife,” said Branstad, who still visits DMU’s Wellness Center for which he raised construction funding.

Branstad said he’s keeping an open mind on whether to support a freshened effort to legalize a marijuana oil extract to treat Epilepsy. The drug would require a prescription. His main concern is “a whole lot of unintended consequences.”

Branstad said he’s spoken with Utah’s governor and plans to seek advice from Alabama’s governor, a physician, telling student reporters he never promises to veto or to sign a bill until he sees the final form.

THEA 132 Music Video Project: Professor Sandy Henry is teaching this class. Students from Theatre, JMC and Music will work together to complete three major processes: transcribe a song into sheet music and perform the song for the video; design the costumes, lighting, scenery, and staging/choreography, as well as perform it; and, design and execute the multimedia production.

AUSTIN, TEXAS – They call it Nerd Spring Break for a reason. Every March social media junkies, venture capital gurus, scruffy bearded programmers and would-be Mark Zuckerbergs all converge on downtown Austin for South By Southwest (SXSW) Interactive.

SXSW-goers arrive at the Austin Convention Center.

While the annual SXSW convention covers more that the tech industry—there’s also an education, film, and, most famously, a music convention running nearly simultaneously—the Interactive portion grabs the lion’s share of the press. It’s the convention of the future—or what the geeks of the world wish it would be. It saw the launch of Twitter. It helped make social media guru Gary Vaynerchuk famous. It even brought together Vice President Al Gore and Napster founder Sean Parker.

Last year’s convention boasted over 30,000 paid attendees. Predictions for this year’s SXSWi (March 7-16) are trending even higher. And while the long lines, odd sidewalk marketing, and endless dash for free beer provide plenty of distraction for convention goers, it’s the panels that truly matter. Here are some of my top picks for the weekend.

“Online Lego Fans and the People Who Love Them”: Sure, it’s a panel about adult Lego fans. But it is also a panel about how to deftly balance brand values and messaging with a rabid and devout fan base in an ever-expanding online community. This is content marketing at its greatest.

“I’m Not a Designer: Accepting the Designer Label”: User experience dominates the tech lexicon these days. It’s also often seen as the designer’s responsibility. Avanade Inc. UX Architect Morgan Burton will talk about accepting the title of designer even though UX design should be everyone’s responsibility.

“A Virtual Conversation with Julian Assange”: Admittedly, a Skype interview with Wikileaks founder Assange could go quickly off the rails. But with the NSA always watching and online privacy becoming even more of a concern, Assange’s views on the world seem less anarchistic and more prophetic by the day. Though, for the record, he’s still weird.

“Print is Amazing (…ly Profitable)”: OK, that title alone should catch a journalist’s eye. But presenter Ane Marie Gardner, CEO and Founder of “Modern Farmer” magazine, actually has the experience—and the business model—to back it up. And with the launch of other new high-profile mags like “Dr. Oz,” “AllRecipes.com,” “Politico” and “Pitchfork,” she’s not alone.

“Dive into Social Media Analytics”: Pulling meaning from metrics isn’t easy. Even seasoned social media marketers and editors have difficulty interpreting all the numbers. With a panel stocked with analytics experts, this session will provide some solid tools to see the story in the data.
