Nobody can say no to Pierre Herme macarons, especially not when it's already right in front of your eyes and you didn't have to fly to Paris just to try them. It turns out that Pierre Herme opened a shop in Bangkok, right in the heart of Emquartier, which is a huge ass mall with lots of food and branded items, similar to Siam Paragon.

We got the 7 piece macaron which came up to about 37SGD.

Expensive, but no regrets.

TRUFFLE BLANCHE & NOISETTE

white truffle and roasted piedmont hazelnut slivers

This is part of the Christmas seasonal special flavour.

If you like truffles, this is it.

Mildly salty mixed in with some sweetness, this is a really unique flavour.

ISPAHAN

rose, litchi and raspberry

This macaron is their best selling flavour and it's all about texture. There were little bits of pinkish stuff inside, can't quite tell what it is but it added some oomph to the cream.

INFINIMENT CHOCOLAT PAINEIRAS

This is hands down one of the best chocolate I have ever had. The chocolate is so creamy it's almost like a thick and silky smooth ice cream.

One of my favourite flavours is this orange one. It looks simple but the addition of candied orange really takes the citrusy notes to a higher level.

Bangkok Adventures: Laduree Cafe at Siam Paragon

French macaron masters Ladurée have landed in Siam Paragon and I decided to drop by for a visit.

I like how the whole place seemed like a pop up cafe concept, right smack in the middle of the mall but still manged to look all quaint and French cafe-ish.

The setup all looks super dainty and girly, it's the perfect place to spend a girly afternoon date having some high tea and chilling.

SAINT HONORE ( 350 BAHT )

puff pastry, cream puff pastry, pistachio light cream, whipped cream, grilled flaked almonds

Ordered a dessert to share, and this sounds very appealing. The actual look of the dessert gave me a surprise though, because I expected some dainty looking thing you know, to match the whole cafe vibe. My other experience with the Saint Honore was at Patisserie G and that was mind blowing. The whole design of the cake just looks sleek, dainty and tasted extremely refined.

I'm a tad disappointed to say the least, while this is not bad, it wasn't mindblowing like what I expected. . I am more disturbed that our local Patisserie G has a much more refined and delicious version than the famous Laduree.

ROI SOLEIL (280 BAHT)

green tea marked by the energy of bergamot combined with rhubarb and caramel. a royal blend that gives panache to this tea.

This tea, however, blew my mind away. It was green tea and beyond. All the added bergamot spices made the flavour of the tea more complex, Even though we were on a time crunch, we still managed to drink the whole pot.

Bangkok Adventures: La Creperie - French Crepes & Parisian Homecooking in Siam Paragon

La Creperie is a French cafe and this branch at Siam Paragon is their second home in Bangkok. Their first cafe is further away from the city and nestled among greenery so fantastic you would think you're in a French countryside.

This outlet at Paragon takes on the decor of a modern Parisian apartment, with monotones blacks and whites taking the main colour scheme and chic paintings hung on the walls. The paintings are all sourced by the owner, and some of them were even taken by him.

There are two levels to this cafe and some really nice and cosy corners for diners who prefer some privacy.

For the people who love promotions and any deals that gets them something free, this is for you.

For the first 100 persons everyday, you get a FREE DRINK if you share a happy moment on Instagram or simply check in on Facebook and hashtag them. FREE DRINK okay. I did it on the spot and got a free drink hahahah

Roasted Tomato Soup with Black Olive Crostini (150 baht)

This is one of the best soups I have tasted and I am not kidding. That tomato soup was velvety smooth and so intensely fragrant. I might also add that tomatos, olives and breads are three foods that I dislike and avoid but in this instance, not only did I finished it all up, I wanted more. The black olive crostini was amazing. The bread was warm, crispy and that black olive spread was salty, fragrant, intriguing and amazing. Typing this makes me swallow my saliva as I crave for this deliciously comforting dish.

Savoury Crepes: Bacon, Mushroom, Cheese, Egg, Tomato (290 baht)

The reason I was drawn to this place was actually because of this dish. They had this gorgeous poster of this exact dish put right at the entrance of the shop and everyday I walk past them, I can't help but stop and stare for a bit. Can you blame me? It was gorgeous and yes it tasted as good as it looked.

The crepe was crispy, eggy, and thin. Yes it was thin but chocked full of ingredients. Everything tasted awesome and the owner was especially excited, regaling us with tales of how he opened his restaurant and what life is like in France.

Savoury Crepes: Smoked Chicken, Cheese, Egg, Mushrooms (270 baht)

I confess I've never had smoked chicken before and this is my first time. The smoked chicken is quite substantial in size and strong in flavour, so one piece can feed many mouthfuls if you cut it up into smaller pieces so that the taste does not overpower the crepes. My only regret was we had no more space for the sweet crepes but that meant I'll be back! It was truly an enjoyable dining experience.

ISAO, is one of the hottest modern Japanese fusion sushi places in Bangkok, and with good reason. Located in Sukhumvit 31, it’s in between BTS Asok & Phrom Phong, so the best way to get here is by taxi unless you like walking or if you are staying nearby. I actually walked from Asok the first time and it was very farrrrrr.

MUST-ORDER! JACKIE (350 BAHT)

Jackie is the most adorable caterpillar sushi you will ever see, and it's also delicious.

This is a Specialty Maki Roll and it comes with ebi, shrimp tempura, ebiko and avocado all lying in a bed of delicious sauce.

MUST-TRY! ISAO'S CALIFORNIA (250BAHT)

Wanted to try something lighter and boy was this amazing. I always thought California rolls were a waste of stomach space but ISAO took my breath away. Their rendition of California roll was a ton of sweet snow crab packed tightly with creamy avocado. Even without shoyu, the roll exuded the sweetness and freshness of crab. It was the simplest roll but it was also one of the most memorable ones. If you want to go back to the basics and would like to try a lighter sushi dish, this is a must try.

SPIDER ROLL (280 BAHT)

While this is not the signature, this is also quite a spectacular roll. The Spider roll is essentially soft shell crab with avocado packed tightly with rice and roe. It was creamy, crispy and mad delicious. Why is everything here so delicious?! I also ordered the Spicy Salmon, which is not pictured here but also extremely good. Must try that if you're a fan of Spicy Salmon. They also have the tuna version available.

MUST-ORDER! SUSHI SANDWICH (300 BAHT)

This is also an ISAO signature, which is sushi shaped like a sandwich with fresh chunks of tuna and salmon. The cripsy tempura bits and roe added a layer of texture to the dish, elevating it to awesome.

MUST-ORDER! VOLCANO (250BAHT)

The Volcano is actually baked scallops in creamy spicy sauce.

This is so incredibly addictive it's impossible to stop at one. Dig through the creamy mess to find big fat juicy scallops hidden underneath. It's like heaven just descended on your plate.

The scallops have ben thoughtfully cut into small pieces so it's easy to spoon up everything and slurp it down. I scraped the shell clean and was tempted to pick it up and lick all the sauce off.

Don't order to share, because you will end up fighting each other for the last piece.

Just order one each, trust me.

Bangkok Adventures: Talad Neon - Bangkok Biggest Night Market

Talad Neon is the newest and biggest night market in the city and it is opened by the same people behind the Platinum Fashion Mall. Officially opened in December, this lively market is conveniently situated in Pratunam and it houses over 900 food and retail shops.

You can expect to find organized rows of beautifully set up stalls with fairy lights, food trucks and whimsically designed shipping container shops where cheap and good items are being sold!

I actually got my phone a tempered glass screen protector for 100baht! That's around SGD4, a very good deal indeed. Especially since the guy worked extra hard to clean my phone for me too haha!

Talad Neon is an all-encompassing experience that not only allows customers to eat and shop to their hearts’ desires. They also have live music performances on-site every night. The festival vibe is strong here with funky neon lights, lighted blossom trees and enchanting fairy lights everywhere, setting it apart from the usual night markets that Bangkok is so popular for. These lighted trees make for a good rendezvous spot for big groups, people who are afraid to get lost, and for the perennial eater who needs a spot to indulge uninterrupted.

You can find lots of hipster looking food and beverage items, like this bloody drink in bag for 79 baht or have a syringe shot in a smaller dosage.

One stall I greatly recommend is this grilled pork skewers. If you think this is just the usual satay we have in Sg, you are greatly mistaken. But if you want the Sg style satay, they also have la. I tried it from another stall, super not impressive. Sg has better. So skip those and TRY THIS.

I don't know what is milk pork, but for some unknown reason the skewers were impossibly tender and juicy with that charred smoky flavour bursting in your mouth.

The most wonderful pork skewers I have ever tasted, it was life changing. If you are there, MUST SAVE STOMACH SPACE FOR THIS.

Okay so I get it, night market foods are always heaty so drown out the fire with some fresh squeezed juice! It is very cheap and refreshing so you can drink to your heart's content, but in moderation please, in case you laosai from too much juice.

I went for the butterfly pea lemon juice just because the colour was intriguing hahaha!

But it was a life saver because...

I was having mad spicy tom yum noodles HAHA!

Look for this food truck if you're there, spiciness aside, I really like this bowl of noodles!

For some reason it reminded me of a fusion version of our Ba Chor Mee.

Tom Yum soup base, but lots of minced meat much like our beloved Ba Chor Mee, plus an oozy egg like in Japanese ramen, and topped with crispy fried wonton skin like in Wonton mee.

If you eat this, run down the street and get juice, its nearby.

Mad delicious, but also mad spicy.

Bangkok Adventures: Crab and Claw - New England Seafood at Siam Paragon

I love Bangkok, and I've been there so often that my friends have started coming to me for food recommendations in Bangkok. Also proof that I am a certified glutton.

Crab and Claw is a relatively new establishment located in the food basement of Siam Paragon, also known as Singaporean's backyard playground. Crab and Claw serve up New England style seafood, which is still a rather new concept in Thailand. It's not cheap, because duh seafood, but there are still plenty of curious locals and tourists descending on the restaurant during peak hours.

SNOW CRAB LINGUINE (450 BAHT)

I believe that made this pasta with some high quality bisque or seafood stock because this dish is one hell of a UMAMI. It packed punch, and lots of it. It was fragrant and chocked full of flavours, it almost tasted like the ocean exploded in your mouth. And so much crab meat, that is fresh meat they took from the claws, so fantastic.

There are many mouth-watering dishes such as the rare wild Alaskan white king salmon (B780) served with confit cherry tomatoes and squid ink hollandaise, and char-grilled Spanish octopus tentacle (B650) served with roast garlic and chorizo-based sauce. They also offer seafood promotions from time to time like the Crystal Crab and the Alaskan King Crab.

NEW ENGLAND SHRIMP BOIL (680 BAHT)

I know I know, it does look great, doesn't it! It also smelled fantastic, the buttery spices wafting.

We couldn't wait to dig in.

But as we soon found out, we were literally and figuratively digging in.

and in.

and in somemore.

Until we stopped 1/4 way through and surveyed how many prawns we had peeled.

We counted how many prawns were there in the pot.

There was close to 40-ish.

Very value for money if you think about it, but you definitely need 4 pax to order this dish.

We even ran out of space to dump the shells. The wait staff had to give us another bucket.

Up to a certain point, I'm just eating because the prawns died for me and so they must not be wasted.

As proof that we have eaten every single bit and how absolutely stuffed we were, here is a picture of our empty bucket and the butter knife standing inside as a gauge of how ridiculously deep the food bucket was.

We swore never to have prawns again for the rest of the trip, and also probably not any for the rest of the year.

Kohaku Tendon at Suntec City

Kohaku Tendon is a fairly new establishment at Suntec City, part of the group of Japanese restaurants at EAT AT SEVEN. Kohaku specialises in Edomae Tendon, where bowls of piping hot Hokkaido rice is piled with tempura, which is then drizzled in a specially made sauce.

Ordering is fairly straightforward.

Basically you decide if you want:

1. Original Meat or Veg

2. Spicy Meat or Veg

They have the signature Kohaku Tendon ($15), Vegetable Tendon ($14), Spicy Flavour ($15) and Vegetable Spicy Flavour ($14).

If you are extremely hungry, a set meal comes with an additional bowl of udon, which costs $4.50 more. But a small eater will not require this option, because the rice bowl is already too much to inhale.

KOHAKU TENDON (15.00)

The portion was extremely generous, so it's definitely value for money! The original Kohaku tendon bowl was topped with ingredients from pumpkin, long beans, mushroom, chicken breast, squid, crab stick, baby corn, and shrimp. The rice is fragrant and fluffy, a tag on the counter indicated that the rice used is imported from Hokkaido.

VEGETABLE TENDON (14.00)

The Vegetable Tendon is essentially the same but without meat and has more vegetables. There is free flow pickled radish and cabbage on every table for you to eat in between mouthfuls of tendon, to get rid of the cloying feeling.

All in all, a very satisfying meal indeed.

Les Patisseries @ Upper Thomson Road

Les Patisseries is a cafe that I've recently discovered in a more obscure part of Upper Thomson that serves the most awesome food. I love the chill vibes of that place and the quality of the food served.

TRUFFLE FRIES (9.50)

When you think of truffle fries at Upper Thomson, people usually think of Habitat Cafe first. Or Pacamara down the road. But I can officially say Les Patisseries has truffle fries to rival the two above mentioned cafes. Fragrant, crispy and addictive, with a touch of sea salt and furikake.

Very ingenious and very delicious.

MUSHROOM BACON AGLIO OLIO (14.00)

Aglio Olio is the most basic od pasta dishes but I have to say Les Patisseries really executes it extremely well. Lots of fragrant mushrooms and bacon bits, this was one of the better aglio olios I have tasted in Singapore.

AL GRANCHIO (18.00)

This is my all-time favourite pasta. I did not expect it to become my all-time favourite but it did. I usually shy away from cream pastas because jelat. But this is tomato cream with crab! I took a leap of faith and there were no regrets at all. No regrets. Creamy, tangy, and chunks of sweet crab. It was amazing. And no, not cloying or jelat at all!

Sadly, they took this off the menu and I'm not a fan of the new menu, the older menu seemed much more exciting and interesting. The Truffle Fries and Aglio Olio is still on the menu, so fret not! On the other hand I am crossing my fingers they bring this back. If not I think I shall be heading elsewhere, possibly Poco Loco to try out their version of the Al Granchio.

Thong Lor - Thai Food @ Djitsu Ang Mo Kio

I saw this fairly new Thai establishment at Djitsun Ang Mo Kio and decided to skip my favourite hawker center behind for this restaurant. They serve a myraid of Thai food and also Thai mookata.
Seeing how my favourite neighbourhood Thai food place is Nakhon, I was excited to see if I can add another jaunt to my list.

PANDAN CHICKEN

This looks so promising but...

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHICKEN!!!!
Massive case of shrinkage here.
While it has a slightly interesting smoky flavour, the size of the chicken is SMALL UNTIL I CANNOT.

NAKHON VS THONGLOR

Both come with 4 pieces of chicken BUT look at the huge discrepancy in size. Obviously you can get more value for money at Nakhon,(and they also taste fab) which is now available almost everywhere.

GREEN CURRY CHICKEN

I was looking forward to this but sadly this has no kick. I also prefer the chicken to be in chunks rather than a whole drumstick, it's rather hard to eat the chicken with the curry while having to debone it. This curry is also too watery for my liking. Sadly I also prefer the version at Nakhon, packs more heat, is of thicker consistency and feels more shiok. The saddest thing is my in-law's maid can make an even better green curry than Thonglor's watered down version. Time to up your game man,

OLIVE FRIED RICE

This was one of the better olive fried rice I've had recently, but somehow the prawns tasted a little undercooked. If not for the undercooked prawns, I would say this olive fried rice is a little above Nakhon's standard. More refined and this definitely makes you think of Thailand.

When I heard that Poco Loco is an Italian restaurant that's situated in the heartland area of Ang Mo Kio, I jumped at the chance to visit them. I love Italian food and sometimes you just can't be bothered to dress up nicely and travel to town just for some Italian food. Poco Loco solved the problem for you! Now you can shuffle down in your just-woke-up hair and nua shirt for some conmfort Italian food!

CALAMARI (7.00)

deep fried squid with spicy tomato sauce

Calamari was springy and fresh, the batter was decent - light and and crunchy. It could do with a bit more seasoning to enhance the flavours though. The spicy tomato sauce was pretty alright, but could do with more sauce. Overall this is pretty value-for-money.

VONGOLE BIANCO (11.00)

So hard to find a plce that can do a good vongole, so I decided to give this a try. Flavour wise, they got it. I feel that if there's more sauce it would be even better, There were lots of clams so clam lovers can rejoice! Very value for money dish, it was quite a big portion!

MANZO ( 12.00 )

The Manzo sounds very atas, and it does look quite atas too. Chunks of beef lathered in truffle cream sauce, people who love cream pasta but dislike those heavy cream jelat type can give this a try. This is a comparatively lighter version of cream pasta and it gives off a very rich and fragrant aroma. This dish is a delight to slurp up.

Tonkichi - Tonkatsu With A View

I've long heard about Tonkichi and have always wanted to try it.

Not sure why I never got down to it til recently.

If you use the JPassport app for food discounts and deals, you'll notice they offer some promotions from time to time.

That is the story of how I ended up at Tonkichi for an early dinner.

MENTAIKO KASANE KATSU SET $28

When I saw that they have Mentaiko, I decided I must try it.

After I had Tampopo's version of mentaiko tonkatsu, I decide I should try this to see who does it better.

There is alot of mentaiko stuffed between the fillet, which is quite satisfying I must say. The tonkatsu is crispy, juicy, everything a tonkatsu should be.

The set meal comes with refillable rice and cabbage, miso soup, pickles, and fruit.

My only gripe is their sesame salad dressing is meh. No body or fragrance whatsoever.

Saboten has a much delicious salad dressing in comparison.

There is also no fresh sesame for you to grind and pair with the tonkatsu sauce.

KATSU TOJI $24

I was quite impressed with this dish, despite being drenched in this special soy sauce and coated with egg, the tonkatsu remained super cripsy all the way til the end!

It was flavourful, cripsy, egg, meaty.

Eveything a good Katsu Toji should be.

Overall I think Tonkichi did a decent job, but I think it's not as mindblowingly good as their reputation seems to suggest. Off the top of my head I can list a couple of my favourite tonkatsu places that can probably do an equally good, if not better job than Tonkichi.

I've heard about Ah Bong's on the grape vine for a while and being the Italian food lover, of course I must visit! They change their menu everyday and come up with some new dish every other day, so this is good for the average diner who craves excitement in their food.

I went to their Tiong Bahru branch first and was so blown away that I repeatedly went back to their Tan Quee Lan branch after that.

WHY SO ADDICTIVE!

BIRTHDAY PASTA $7/$9

This is like crack.

Seriously.

Love the old school plates, and super love this mildly spicy pesto.

I love penne because of the texture, and I think the pesto went perfectly with it.

There's a kinda smoky, spicy, creamy flavour to it that not only is it extremely pleasing, it also tempts you back for more.

TRUFFLED MAC AND CHEESE $7

black pig bacon, mushrooms, truffle oil

So cheesy, though the cheese lovers could argue that there could be even more cheese!

The skinny pasta provided a good bite and my dining partner enjoyed this dish very much.

CRABBY MAC AND CHEESE $13

The chefs at Ah Bong's are never stingy with their cheese, and whatever liao they decide to put in the pasta. It's actually a fairly big portion so you can consider sharing, so as to make space for more sio bak and other to-share dishes!

FLYING DRAGON $12

This is a very pleasing dish, the phuay leng adding a touch of local uniqueness to the dish while also lending a lighter flavour to complement the chorizo. I also love this type of pasta!

PESTO $12

This Pesto is so slurpingly good, the pine nuts were extremely fragrant.

There was a generous amount of shitake mushroom slices inside, all coated with creamy pesto.

Their pesto is made fresh everyday so if you love pesto, grab it when it's on the menu!

ALMOST THERE PORK BELLY $12

(only available at Tan Quee Lan)

This is on their To Share menu at their new branch at TQL.

It usually goes for $12 but I got it at $10 because they accidentally burnt it a little.

Sio bak is sio bak, Burnt or not, I'll take whatever I can get.

This is pretty delicious , crispy crackly skin with juicy meat.

It's practically singing in my mouth! Would be even more perfect if there's mustard to go with it.

Hajime's chef helms from the popular Tampopo so you can expect some standard for their food.

GYOZA $6.90

Gyozas were pretty delicious, thin skin and suitably juicy.

CHA SHU RAMEN $11.90

For 11.90, this ramen has alot of liao and will satisfy the greediest of people who wants a little of everything in their ramen.

The stock is milk white and robust, but not too jelat.

TONKATSU RAMEN $14.90

Tonkatsu Ramen comes with a side of tonkatsu and this is actually quite a pocket friendly option.

The broth is slightly spicier and has lots of cabbage for that extra crunch.

I cannot say this is a super duper delicious ramen but this is a decent version if you just want a quick ramen fix in the neighbourhood.

The tonkatsu fared better than the ramen, it's crunchy, juicy yet not the least bit oily.

It remained crispy til the end of my meal.

I suggest you can order the tonkatsu set meals with rice if you're dining here.

These were the epitome of freshness, and I love the spicy sauces the chopped sashimi were tossed in. It really takes gunkan sushi to another level.

CHIRASHI DON - 19

The Chirashi is super pretty and fresh!

They offer DIY Chirashi but we stuck with the basic bowl. The fish were sliced to cubes, perfect bite size portion. Paired with the crunchy cucumber and sweet tamagoyaki, this made the for perfect sharing bowl.

DYNAMITE MAKI - 16.80

One of the most interesting and most yummy maki rolls I've ever had.
Wagyu sliced thinly and seared is one of the best things to exist. The crunchy tempura bits added some texture to the overall mouth feel. MUST ORDER.

SPICY TUNA MAKI - 15.40

This is a very light and refreshing maki roll as compared to the Dynamite. The tuna is super fresh and sweet, and the drizzle of spicy sauce elevated the overall flavour of this dish.

For this level of freshness, Senmi serves up pretty decent and value-for-money sashimi and sushi.
If you're suffering from some Japan wanderlust, Senmi's deliciously fresh food can cure you of that. Until you can return to Japan to gorge yourself silly.

Ginza Tendon Itsuki - The Most Authentic Tendon in Singapore (so far)

I am super excited to write about this because people who know me know that I am quite nuts about tendon, just check out how many tendons I ate while in Japan. Many Japanese restaurants in Singapore serve some form of rice with tempura that they called tendon, but its utter blasphemy to call those pathetic bowls of overfried food a tendon. It's far from the real thing.

Ginza Tendon Itsuki is the first tendon restaurant in Singapore and they only serve tendon.

Whoohoo!

All set meals come with a bowl of miso soup and chawanmushi.
And typical of all Keisuke shops, there's a palette cleanser of seasoned vegetables on every table. Feel free to eat your fill.

There are only two types of tendon - the Special or Vegetable.

Either you eat meat or you go veg, very easy to decide.

SPECIAL TENDON - 13.90

The Special comes with 2 very big prawns, 2 pieces of chicken fillet some long beans, binjal and other assorted vegetables. Oh and a tempura onsen egg! Honestly, the chicken fillets felt kinda out of place here, tendon places in Japan usually use fish but that might drive the costs up. If the chicken fillet was well done, it probably would not feel so weird, but it also tasted kinda bland. I really think fish or squid would be a much better choice.

VEGETABLE TENDON 12.90

This Vegetable tendon was a delight to devour, and the special bowl kept the food warm right to the last morsel, perfect for super slow eaters like me. The sweet tempura sauce was pleasantly compatible with the grains. I especially love long beans tempura! Bell pepper still tasted sweet and brinjal is oh so crisp on the outside soft on the inside. Yums!

This style of tempura is slightly heavier on the batter, which reminds me of Sansada

There's no right or wrong, simply which kind of tendon you prefer. I usually like my tempura light and crispy like how Tsunahachi does it, but variety is good.

This is definitely a bowl of soul food that I can keep returning for.

This one is so hot, don't order unless you are very sure you can take the heat.

I perspired my way through it, but love the abundance of ingredients inside. Everything is fresh and because it's cheap, it almost makes you think you're in Thailand.

This pad thai has wok hei, and it's well-fried. For $5, it's quite a big portion, small eaters can share.

Tender, tender chicken. And so fragrant and flavourful too.

If you think the airport in Tokyo is a boring place, you're in for a surprise. Narita Airport is full of delicious foods and you'll be left wondering why you don't have more tummy space. A quick walkaround led me to Sanbei Soba for some comfort food before boarding.

Soba is one of my favorite food and it's also the less popular cousin in the Japanese food family. Most people go straight for ramen because of the rich and robust soup. But I like soba because of its light and refreshing flavour, it provides a nice respite to the usual Japanese dishes.

Tempura Soba (1320 Yen)

Soup soba with tempura set is actually pretty good. While it wasn't mind-blowing, it was exactly as I expected. Hot comforting broth that you can count on to warm your stomach.

Tempura Zaru (1420 Yen)

This is the cold soba with tempura set that I really like. One of my favorite things about eating soba is dipping them in the sauce and slurping it alllll up. It's also rather rare that I get good tempura paired with soba, crunchy and fresh. I really like the vegetable tempura, fresh with and sweet.

Three cheers to gyozas!

The ultimate comfort food, pan-fried gyozas dipped in vinegar and doused in spicy chilli oil!

We stumbled upon this gyoza shop one day and decided to be adventurous.

Deep-fried Tofu ( 230 Yen )

I was expecting agedashi tofu but turns out it's just normal fried tofu.

Nothing special, you can give it a miss.

Maybe try their stir-fry dishes, they do look and smell fantastic.

20 pieces Gyoza (880 Yen)

We weren't adventurous enough for the Everest hahahaa! 20 was just nice for us.

This gyoza place categorized the amount of gyozas into 3 different mountains - Normal(20), Mt Fuji (30), Mt Everest (40).

I believe this is the grilled gyozas, since they have 3 types - boiled, grilled, fried.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the grilled and fried but I think whichever you ordered will be delish anyway.

Look at the pretty golden undersides of the gyozas!

They gyozas popped open with a burst of juice, and my favourite way of eating them is to douse them all in chilli oil, spoon some chilli flakes on top, then dip them in vinegar. Yums.

While I believe there are even more delicious gyozas out there, this random place I found still managed to hit all the right spots. 皮薄馅多，多汁爽口!

Fried Rice (430 Yen)

One of the best fried rice I've had in my life, this looks deceptively simple but it had a garlicky fragrance and wok hei that tells of a skillful chef wielding the wok! 粒粒分明！

I can easily pack a plate by myself, this goes extremely well with the chilli!

This is the menu, it comes in English. So considerate and helpful!

Not too hard a place to find, just look out for the signboard with lots of giant gyozas.

On a wet and cold night, we were stumbling along Nishi Shinjuku and were dazzled by the amount of food available. So we decided to dine at the first ramen shop we see. So tadah welcome to Yokohama Kakei.

Black Lekei Ramen [Ramen seasoned with Black Garlic Oil] (780 Yen)

Look at the silky smooth and clean broth with the beautiful black garlic oil floating on the surface. I tell you the fragrance is so overpowering and makes you want to slurp it alllll up. This ramen shop is super cute because all their ramens come with a tiny ajitama in the form of a quail egg. I ordered a normal size ajitama anyway because eggs!

The only flaw in my opinion is the thick like siao ramen noodles! One strand of the noodle is like 6-7 strands of the thin noodles. It had a thickness and slightly chewy consistency that reminded me of udon. It took me quite a while to chew and my jaws were given a pretty good workout. Not my favorite, which was a pity because the broth was pretty spectacular. I drained the bowl dry, slurps!

Ramen with Slices of Pork Belly (980 Yen)

This was the original tonkotsu broth which felt very clean, rich without being overpowering, savory without being too salty.

Also the same thick noodles which filled us up even more quickly. The char siew was pretty good, tender and fragrant.

You purchase your meal coupons from

the vending machine but this machine has no English. At least there's pictures.

The English menu that will save your life. Look at this before making your order at the vending machine.

Overall, this shop did well on the broth. It was very clean and warms you up properly. If the ramen wasn't so thick, it would have been better, but this is just a matter of personal preference. If you like thick ramen noodles, you shouldn't miss this place because the broth is quite stellar.

Tenfusa is a humble little shop nestled among the various sushi shops in Tsukiji Market, most notably beside the extremely famous Sushi Dai and Sushi Daiwa. It's a small place and can only seat around 12 people.

We arrived at lunch time and wandered around for a bit before we found the shop. The Sushi Dai and Daiwa queues were stupendously long. The queues broke off once it encroached on the other shop's space and continued along the corridors. In comparison, Tenfusa is full house but only has 2 other salarymen queuing in front of me. Of course everyone else soon joined me after they realized the sushi queues aren't moving. Or maybe they had no idea what I was queueing for and just randomly joined in (so many Singaporeans hahaha).

The kindly old lady inside was all smiles and welcomed us into the shop. Whoop finally! I took a peek into the kitchen and saw the chef cooking. It was a tiny kitchen and there's only one chef, the tempura is only fried upon order so it takes a while for the food to get served.

We ordered the standard tempura don and boy, was it yummy. It was piping hot and crispy, but the seafood inside was freshhhhh. The rice was drenched with this delicious sauce that added flavor to the tempura. Fish tempura and squid tempura were one of the highlights of this dish, how often do you see these two ingredients being tempura-ed in Singapore?

It may look like a hole in the wall place but this hole hides a formidable tiger. Or in this case, tendon. If you want to try something other than queuing the whole day for sushi, eat this. You won't regret it.

If you're an organized traveller like me, I'm sure you would be surprised to find that you've been walking past THE Gontran Cherrier for 3 days without even realizing. For the life of me, I couldn't remember why I didn't put this on my travel to-eat list. Imagine the horror, I missed out on having awesome flaky croissants for 3 days!!!! It was a good thing my travel partner decided to be curious.

From then on, we bought pastries back to the hotel every night as supper. The original croissants were UNBELIEVABLY FRESH. It was flaky, crispy and airy. The faint buttery aroma gently wafted up your nose as you feel torn between devouring it in big bites or to savour in slowly. The chocolate ones were even more amazing. It was then we decided we have to sit at the shop itself and enjoy the other pastries.

Criossant aux amandes [Almond Croissant] (280 Yen)

The almond croissants were dense, sweet, and were loaded with goodness. I expected the croissant to be a plain empty one, but the insides proved to be a surprise. It was loaded with something fruity and sweet, and it make me think of apples. If you're not a fan of sweet stuff, it's better to share this because it can get a little too sweet towards the end. Or pair it with some hot tea.

Quiche Lorraine (380 Yen)

I seldom see quiches being sold here so this is a perfect opportunity to try one. The size was just nice and it was actually quite filling without being cloying or rich.

Pain au gorgonzola, noix et figues (380 Yen)

This pastry is half sweet walnut and half salty. It was quite an interesting combination, and the baguette is very fragrant. It had a buttery enticing fragrance.

On a cold and wet winter night, I was suddenly ravenous and craved some hot soup. And tadahhh what should I find but a vending machine ramen shop!!!

Oreryu Jukusei Shio Ramen (680 Yen)

They have many types of Shio ramen and given my limited vocab, I couldn't understand what's the difference btw between the different types of Shio. And so we randomly picked one. And boy was it the best choice ever, this was one of the most amazing bowls of Shio ramen I've ever tasted. The Shio had this depth of flavour with an extremely fragrant smelI .

Look at the very thin noodles, it was very springy and had a good bite. The thin noodles paired very well with the broth, so it made slurping all the more fun.

Miso Ramen (700 Yen)

This miso ramen was mad delicious, very good miso and different from the miso ramen you get in Singapore. It wasn't overly salty and the miso tastes fantastic.

The only thing I didn't like about this bowl is the noodles. It's not that the noodles aren't good, it's simple because I prefer thin noodles to thick noodles. These noodles are yellower and slightly thicker than the Shio ramen noodles. I suppose it pairs well with the miso stock but I simply prefer the Shio better.

We also ordered a karaage and gyoza mixture because when in Japan, eat as much as you can. While the gyozas and karaage weren't fantastic, they were still quite decent.

They have many branches, so if you see one, don't miss it.

The taste of the Shio is really quite unforgettable.

Asakusa is a cultural heritage area that's famous for tendons!!!!!!

I really love tendons, and the lack of good tendons in Singapore has sent me running to Japan to satisfy my cravings.

During my research, we stumbled upon this place called Sansada that serves up old school tendon.

上丼　(1820 yen, 21 SGD)

This is the standard tendon, it came with a bowl cover but because the bowl was overflowing with goodness, the bowl cover only rested lightly on top, with all the delicious looking tempura peeking through.

The prawn is hugeeeeee, and look at how beautiful it is.
Yes it tasted as good as it looks. Very fresh, fat and fabulous.

There's a piece of kakiage in the tendon, and it was full of surprises. Small

prawns embedded in a batter mixed with cubes of squid!

特上丼 (2700 yen, 31SGD)

This is the special don with prawns. 3 jumbo prawns begging to be eaten.
But it was so amazing that you just keep on going despite feeling stuffed.

The tendons here are more pricey than usual but that's also because of the ridiculously generous portions that were served up to us. I was so stuffed that I couldn't finish all the rice, despite it being extremely fluffy and delicious.

Asakusa is famous for tendons so if you're in the vicinity, do drop by for a bowl of this famous old- school style tendons!

Fresh Seafood Chirashi Sushi Bowl (895 Yen - without tax)

I stumbled upon a 24 hour seafood place and decided that we shall give it a try.

The menu is quite extensive and there is a wide variety of dishes to satisfy whatever craving you might have. This Chirashi don is one of the most generous and cheapest bowl I've had! It was brimming with fresh sashimi cubes, even the cubes of tamagoyaki were sweet and yummy.

Jumbo-size Minced Tuna Cutlet (399 Yen - without tax)

We ordered this minced tuna cutlet and were shocked by the sheer size. When they say jumbo, they really mean jumbo. It's bigger than my face! When we cut it up, we were met by a delightful sight of real minced tuna, which tasted fantastic by the way. The exterior was crisp and the insides were suitably juicy.

Famous Kani Crab Miso (499 Yen - without tax)

We have no idea what this is but somehow it looks good so we ordered one anyway. It was a grey gooey mess and I have no idea how it'll taste like, so I tentatively scooped some and tasted it. IT WAS EPIC. So insanely and unexpectedly delicious!! It's so hard to describe the taste cuz it's a blend of seafoody and crabby flavour that lingers indefinitely in your mouth. MUST TRY.

Three Grilled Items Bowl (730 Yen - tax included)

Basically this is an bowl of aburi fish goodness.

My favourite is the aburi salmon because oh yes who can say no that slightly charred smokey flavour paired with the soft melty Omega 3 that just dissolves in your mouth.

While their sushi wasn't the best, it still manages to hit the spot with its freshness . Even the wasabi is fresh, not the "lao hong" type commonly served in Singapore. I especially love the tamagoyaki sushi, and that's saying something because I basically stopped eating tamagoyaki sushi in Singapore cuz it's always cold and hard. But this one was surprisingly tender and had a tinge of sweetness typical of tamagoyaki. And the salmon roe sushi!!!!! Feel every single roe burst and erupt into amazing goodness in your mouth.

I swear, eating in Japan is like having a food orgasm multiple times in a day. If you're in the Shinjuku vicinity and happen to need some kani, or feel the temptation to stuff your face with cheap chirashi don, please come here. EAT ALL THE KANI MISO!!!

The Regular Cup Set costs 780 Yen which is inclusive of a regular soup and sesame rice/bread
That translates to about SGD 9, which is slightly cheaper than the branch in Singapore, which costs $10.80 for the same set. The flavours they offered in Tokyo are different as well.

The moment you walk into the shop, you will be stunned at how luxuriously elegant and quiet the place is. It's a busy kind of quiet, pretty elegant Japanese ladies engaging in soft conversation with their friends, or just sitting alone enjoying a quiet lunch by themselves. I fell in love with the space, it was clean, bright, and full of wood furnishings. Very zen, very Japanese.

Atlantic Lobster, Tomato & Potherb Bisque

The lobster bowl is exclusive to the Japan outlets, unless you buy the packet versions on Rakuten in Singapore. I love how smooth and creamy it is, with a sweet hint of seafood enticing you.

Eat it with their amazing sesame rice, and you will wonder why rice has never tasted so good in Singapore. Or why have you not tasted such delicious rice in your life.

Balsamic Accented Chicken and Onion Soup

This is also a interesting flavour not on the Singapore branch menu. It's not a thick soup, but I like how creamy it tasted and how well it goes with the rice.
