I’m not sure who else has already blogged about this masterwork, but Joakim’s new album (due out on K7 in September), is a ferocious piece of genius. Musically terrifically diverse, Milky Ways (SUCH A GOOD TITLE) meanders a path somewhere between dance, post-punk, and “out there”, somehow managing to carve it’s own perfect story into a tradition forged by Television, ESG and more recently, Liars and his own Monsters and Silly Songs. While not necessarily appropriate for the club (unless you want to seriously creep everyone out, which can be incredibly enjoyable), the album is smart, interesting and above all, WHOLE, meant to be played the entire way through.

I give you the opening cut, ‘Back to Wilderness’, an epic track clocking in at over eight minutes and hacking through some deep, dark and dense sonic forestry. Get your machetes my lovelies, we’re going in.

Surprise surprise, this covers both bases. A gift from BEST! DUDE! EVER! James F)&*ing Friedman of Throne of Blood fame, this track is so unbelievably good and tight and “groovy” (hate that word. Sorry. But the track is really “in a groove”! Swear!) that I hesitate to bother attempting to articulate it and suggest that you just have a listen for yourselves.

To exponentially turn the genius level up, these dudes make their shit live. Like playing actual instruments and doing loops on the fly, fusing the principles behind jazz and the tools and sounds of dance music. Check out THIS amazing video of them in action and have a peek at their WEBSITE to see what these guys are really about, because it’s pretty next level. This is the music I want to make and the way I want to make it, UGH! IT IS SO FUCKING GOOD! Happy 3rd of July.

It’s a bunch of music I’m pretty excited about right now and exemplifies the sound I’m cultivating as a solo act (Staccato’s most recent work is available HERE).
As with all of my mixes, this is live, uncut and unedited. The levels are a little funky, sorry, but you get the idea. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed makin’ it.

It’s a great feeling to unleash some epic giant of a song on the world. What’s even better is to uncage a relatively unknown, or unshared piece of work, that had it not been for you, might’ve gone quite awhile without ever seeing the light of day. Now, I’m not saying that I have discovered anything! But after a few days of hunting on Google, I’m pretty positive that I’m one of the first of make it widely available. And of what brilliant speckle of joy do I speak? Why, it’s none other than 65 Days Of Static’s remix of ‘Reading In Bed’ off Emily Haines‘ 2006 release Knives Don’t Have Your Back. Lately I’ve found comfort in the melancholy hums of glitchy IDM. Ironically, the trademark straining of white noise and side-winding vocals brings a cool calmness to my mind. This specific piece is without a doubt a bit more gentle (slow) than the majority of 65DOS’s work, which only expands its greatness in my opinion. Haines’ vocals need to explaining. They are as they always are; rough, gentle, and perfect.

The piece is featured on Disassociates 1, a compilation exclusively available on Beatport, and the whole thing is solid. Appropriate for dropping in front of the heads early in the night, or keeping shit ‘on the level’ in atmospheric sets (gallery openings, restaurants, pool parties, hotel lobbies). Gitit!

First introduced to me by my favorite Derek Bobus c. 2004, this gem brings to mind supergay dudes who appreciate the fine art of “cape dancing” in sweaty awesome underground clubs and hurling glitter on everyone they encounter. So good! The track was actually released in 1981 by said German cult act who apparently were responsible for inventing “electronic body music” aka industrial dance (shout out to wikipedia for filling my life with fun facts). Regardless of origin and the fact that it’s mixed horrendously, Los Ninos del Parque rules. Happy Tuesday.

A tech-tribal minimal groove released on Marc Romboy’s Systematic label is excellent in terms of the richness of production and the variety of the remixes. This one from Nick Curly (child prodigy from Mannheim) and Gorge (his mysterious some-time production partner) is pretty relaxed but feels fucking great nonetheless. The original and the Livio and Roby versions are also really dope and available at Traxsource.

Oh man, I love being right. And, after the brief argument I just had involving the pronunciation of the name of The Postal Service’s Jimmy Tamborello’s now full time musical outlet, the only thing that makes my smile any wider is the track that actually ignited said debate. JT admits on his website to having made a remix of Lykke Li’s ‘Tonight’ that “didn’t end up getting used”. Lucky for the rest of us, he was granted the personal use of it, which was then extended to the public. Free music, is there anything better?

As with everything that floats out of Jimmy’s bedroom studio, ‘Tonight’ is a whimsical escapade through tech-romance framed in cinematic perfection. In this case, his loss truly is our gain, though having followed Jimmy’s work long before his entrance into FedEx, Honda, and Sony commercials (via the The Postal Service), I have a feeling that we haven’t robbed him of a thing. In my opinion, this remix is the only thing saving Zachrisson (LL) from total electro inclusion melt down. This song is literally making my day.

Recently, everything that Eli Escobar touches has just been so unbelievably good it makes me kind of furious. Not only is he a fellow member of the Turntable Lab family and an exceptional blogger (blog.turntablelab.com and outsidebroadcast.blogspot.com), but the remixes he’s been doing of late have just been stupid good. We shared the edit of Heaven 17’s seminal ‘Penthouse and Pavement’ he did for the disco set, and I think I drop his version of ‘Stand Back’ every time I play solo. Now, though it’s usually not my style, this poppy, meloncholy-urgent, sparkling, lovely take on Neon Neon’s ‘I Lust You’ is a dreamy slice of magic for you. Shit goes deep around three minutes in. Eli is also playing ‘More on the Floor’ Saturday in DTLA with Bladerunners, (fellow Major resident) Mike B and Nate Day. Goes Late. Highly recommended you show up.
