The “EDAG Light Cocoon” is not just a concept study of a compact, dynamic sports car, but also an unprecedented projection of the ultimate in future lightweight construction: a complete, bionically optimised vehicle structure combined with a weatherproof textile outer skin panel, which marks a new dimension for lightweight construction and automobile aesthetics: backlight technology illuminates the skeleton-like, organic structure, and brings the “EDAG Light Cocoon” to life.

Also involved in this extraordinary and visionary concept are outdoor specialists Jack Wolfskin. Their outdoor textile “Texapore Softshell” provides ideal weather protection for the “EDAG Light Cocoon”.

Following the success of the EDAG GENESIS this spring, engineering specialists EDAG have expanded their vision of a bionically inspired body structure. In order to be able to implement bionic construction principles and natural strategies, additive manufacturing potential has also been put to use in the “EDAG Light Cocoon”.
“We are pursuing the vision of sustainability – as demonstrated by nature: lightweight, efficient, and without any waste,” explains EDAG’s head designer, Johannes Barckmann. “The result: the ‘EDAG Light Cocoon’ presents a stable, branch-like load bearing structure from the 3D printer, which only uses material where it is absolutely necessary.”
Instead of treating the body as a closed surface here, any material not actually needed for the special load cases was removed. EDAG’s simulation experts carried out static and dynamic calculations for the basics of this topologically optimised ideal structure, and in this way helped to confirm its suitability as a potential lightweight concept.

The EDAG designers took a leaf as their inspiration for the ultimate, lightweight outer skin. Just as with a leaf, which has an ideal structure with a lightweight outer skin stretched over it, a textile skin covers the “EDAG Light Cocoon”. In Jack Wolfskin, outdoor specialists, the ideal project partner was found to supply a tried and tested stretch fabric that is also extremely weatherproof, to serve as the new outer body skin. “Even if it sounds futuristic to begin with, this approach has a its own special appeal: weighing no more than 19 g/m², the Jack Wolfskin material supports maximum lightweight design requirements with minimum weight.
To give you a comparison: this extremely strong material is four times lighter than standard copier paper,” points out EDAG CTO Jörg Ohlsen. “Combined with the topologically optimised, additively manufactured structure, it offers enormous potential and stimulus for the ultimate lightweight construction of the future.”

When world-beating car meets class-conquering engine, the formidable result is the all new 367PS Audi RS 3 Sportback. The DNA for the world’s most powerful series production premium compact hatchback comes courtesy of the A3 hatchback – the 2014 World Car of the Year – and the latest evolution of the evocative 2.5-litre five-cylinder TFSI – the International Engine of the Year in the 2.0 to 2.5-litre category. Enhanced by latest generation quattro all-wheel-drive, these genes create a car with truly exceptional dynamic capabilities, but one which can also deftly handle everything that daily life throws at it.

“There is a long tradition of five-cylinder engines at Audi,” says Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Board Member for Technical Development at AUDI AG. “In the 80s, they turned Audi into a sporty brand, both in motor sports and in production. The new Audi RS 3 Sportback features the latest generation of our 2.5 litre, five-cylinder engine – the most powerful production engine in the modular transverse matrix.”

Due to become available in the UK in March 2015, and expected to reach its first owners here next summer, the extreme high performance hatchback bolsters the 367PS output from its 2.5-litre TFSI with 465 Nm (343.0 lb-ft) of torque, which is available right from 1,625rpm through to 5,550rpm, enabling it to punch vigorously at the horizon in any gear and at virtually any speed.

Lighter, faster, more efficient

Helped by advances in construction processes and material use made as part of the Audi ultra efficiency programme, the successor to the original RS 3 Sportback weighs in 55kg lighter, tipping the scales at 1,520kg (without driver), despite additional equipment and safety features. Against the clock its resulting power-to-weight ratio of 241PS per ton helps it to clear the 62mph marker from rest in just 4.3 seconds, and to continue to an electronically governed 155mph top speed which, for drivers with regular Autobahn access, can be increased on request to 174mph.

The distinctive rhythm of the 1 – 2 – 4 – 5 – 3 five-cylinder ignition sequence – the classic Audi soundtrack played out since the 1980s by rally cars, touring cars and production models such as the Ur quattro, the RS 2 and the TT RS – washes over the cabin as the new RS 3 Sportback gathers momentum. Two flaps in the exhaust pipes control the exhaust flow to provide for an even more intensive sound experience that varies with engine load and speed, and the driver can control these flaps via the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system, which is standard. For the first time in an Audi model at this level, the already fittingly bass-heavy RS exhaust system can be replaced at extra cost by an even richer-sounding sports exhaust upgrade.

In the latest edition of the classic engine increased power and torque goes hand in hand with improved efficiency, which is confirmed by its compliance with the latest EU6 emissions regulations. According to the NEDC consumption test the new ‘entry level’ RS model is capable of returning up to 34.8mpg, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 189g/km. A recuperation system, a demand-controlled oil pump and a newly developed start-stop system which turns off the engine shortly before the car comes to a stop contribute to this impressive data.

A seven-speed S tronic transmission, which has been reworked to offer even faster shifts, directs the power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The quattro system features torque vectoring based on intelligent software and is designed with maximum driving enjoyment foremost in mind. Its central component is an electronically controlled, hydraulically activated multi-plate clutch, the weight of which has been reduced by 1.4kg as further evidence of the adherence to the principles of Audi ultra throughout the car.

Variable quattro response

The clutch is mounted on the rear axle in the interest of balanced load distribution, and the parameters its bespoke RS 3 software works to can be controlled via the Audi drive select system. Depending on driving style and the coefficient of friction, it can send between 50 and 100 percent of the available torque to the rear axle, and when Audi drive select is in dynamic mode and the ESC Electronic Stabilisation Control system is in its sport setting, power is transferred to the rear sooner and in greater amounts for even greater agility and more direct turn-in. In this mode the driver can even perform controlled drifts on low-friction road surfaces. ESC can also be completely deactivated by pressing and holding the button.

The chassis of the five-door model also sets new standards. Compared with the Audi A3 Sportback, the body sits 25 millimetres lower, and the track of the McPherson front suspension has been widened to 1,559 millimetres. It incorporates specially developed, high-strength aluminium pivot bearings. The rear axle, which has a track width of 1,514 millimetres, is a four-link construction with rods of high-strength steel that handle the longitudinal and lateral forces separately.

The new progressive steering system is standard, and is capable of varying its ratio between 15.3:1 and 10.9:1 as a function of steering input. Its efficient, electromechanical servo boost has RS-specific settings.

The Audi magnetic ride adaptive damper system with its magnetorheological fluid-filled dampers that can be influenced by an electric current is available as an option. Its operating characteristics are adjustable via Audi drive select with its comfort, auto, dynamic and individual modes.

The internally ventilated disc brakes measure 370 millimetres in diameter at the front and 310 millimetres at the rear. The front friction rings feature a weight-saving wave design and are perforated for maximum heat dissipation. Pins connect them to aluminium brake caps, and they are gripped by eight-piston fixed calipers painted black (red optional) with RS logos.

Optional ceramic brakes

Among the technologies that differentiate the new Audi RS 3 Sportback from its competitors are the optional carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs on the front axle. They also measure 370 millimetres and are gripped by anthracite grey calipers.

The acclaimed framework within which all this advanced technology is integrated is the Volkswagen Group’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) with its strict lightweight construction concept. The occupant cell contains many components of ultra-high-strength and hot-shaped steels, and the bonnet is made of aluminium. The transverse orientation of the engine in combination with the multi-plate clutch and the battery, which are located in front of and behind the rear axle, respectively, contributes to a favourable axle load distribution.

The remarkable capabilities that render this car worthy of the RS badge are also visually referenced at the front of the car by the high-gloss black, honeycomb-look treatment for the Singleframe grille with its matt aluminium-look frame, by the pronounced air intake below the license plate frame and by the large side intakes framed by bold contours. The blade integrated into the front apron extends upward into the air intakes to form a vertical dividing bar.

Viewed in profile, the widened front wings, chiselled side sills, matt aluminium-look mirror housings and large roof spoiler immediately catch the eye, while at the rear the differentiation is clearly made by a remodelled bumper with high-gloss black diffuser insert, honeycomb grille and four bars, from which two large, oval tailpipes boldly protrude. Eight paint finishes will be available, including the two new shades Nardo grey and Catalunya red, metallic, the latter available exclusively for the RS 3 Sportback.

Dedicated individualists can order additional optional distinguishing features, including 19-inch matt titanium or high-gloss anthracite black machine polished alloy wheels as an alternative to the 19-inch five-arm rotor design fitted as standard, a carbon engine cover and styling packages in matt aluminium and gloss black which also include a quattro logo in titanium grey in the air inlet.

The purposeful black interior of the RS 3 Sportback also befits its status. Its sports seats are upholstered in Fine Nappa leather with contrasting stitching in rock grey, and the driver’s is perfectly positioned in relation to the flat-bottomed RS multifunction sports steering wheel with its leather and Alcantara trim. Stainless steel pedals, Alcantara door inserts and inlays in either 3D design black or optional Aluminium Race or Carbon also help to set the tone. High-quality applications in gloss anthracite black frame the instruments, which include black-faced dials with red needles and white scales, plus a driver’s information system enhanced by a boost pressure indicator, an oil temperature gauge and a lap timer.

Lighter RS buckets seats

Standard equipment will of course be in keeping with this model’s ranking in the A3 line-up, as will the list of attractive options. For the first time in a compact class Audi this will include newly developed RS bucket seats with integrated side airbags and a carbon seat shell which are seven kilograms lighter than the standard sports seat. It will also offer an RS 3 interior design package with red accents on the seats, knee pads, air vents,floor mats and seat belts.

The infotainment and driver assistance systems familiar from the wider A3 range will naturally also be available, including MMI navigation plus with MMI touch and Audi connect bringing internet-based services to the car.

The new RS 3 Sportback takes the total number of RS models offered by quattro GmbH, the high-performance subsidiary responsible for developing and building the most extreme models in the Audi portfolio, to seven. The newcomer joins the RS Q3, RS 4 Avant, RS 5 Coupé and Cabriolet, RS 6 Avant and RS 7 Sportback.

If you see it on the road, you could be a bit shocked by its look. The wide body emphasizes the lines of the car, and successfully matches its blasting performance. Three power options are available (160 BHP, 210 BHP, 248 BHP). The most powerful version goes from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5,5 seconds, and its top speed is in excess of 240 km/h. The car is not just a tuned 500 Abarth. It is intended to be a real production car, homologated by Romeo Ferraris. In other words, you buy the Cinquone, not a tuned 500 Abarth. And you can customize every single detail, both on the outside and the inside. The exterior colour and livery can be fully personalized. Plus, countless leather and trim options are available.

SIMPLY AMAZING
Starting from a 500 Abarth, Romeo Ferraris was able to craft a small-size gran turismo with unique design and extreme performance. UP TO 248 BHP
The 1.4 T-jet is pushed to its limits with three different power options: 160 BHP (Entry Level), 210 BHP (S), and 248 BHP (Corsa). All of them feature a specific ECU setup developed by Romeo Ferraris. With the S and Corsa models, you also get an upgraded turbocharger, new injectors, a new fuel pressure regulator and a high performance full exhaust system (downpipe with catalyzer, mid pipeand rear muffler) homologated to meet the Euro 6 pollution standards. And if you think that your exhaust note is sometimes too loud for the city streets, you can install a remote control valve to quiet it down as an option.

NEED FOR SPEED
If the exterior can leave you speechless, the car’s handling will definitely make you fall in love. The Cinquone Corsa (248 BHP, 330 Nm of torque) goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds and its top speed is in excess of 240 km/h. In addition to that, its weight-to-power ratio (4,15 kg/BHP) is the lowest among minicars (A segment). On the road, you can appreciate the amazing handling and grip levels resulting from an Bilstein/Eibach suspension system with adjustable ride height (as an option, you can get a fully ride height/compression/rebound adjustable one). Every time you hit the throttle, you can feel the power through your veins. And you don’t have to worry about stopping in time because the braking system is up to the situation, with 305 mm Brembo vented discs and 4 piston floating calipers at the front and 204 mm discs at rear (the Entry Level has 284 x 22 mm discs at front).

TAILOR MADE
The interiors can be fully customized and Romeo Ferraris offers countless options to satisfy every client request. Every single part of the cockpit can be covered with leather or Alcantara®, to delight even the most sophisticated tastes. On the other hand, who loves racing style can choose from a wide range of carbon fiber parts to replace the original plastic ones, including a full-width dashboard, paddle shifters and steering wheel inserts, door handles an the A/C panel. Upon request, Romeo Ferraris can create a two seater configuration with a roll-bar and Recaro monocoque sports seats (optional). V 63 RS EXPORT by VAETH

The located at Hoesbach near Aschaffenberg VAETH car and engine techniques company is not only the best specialist for Mercedes tuning, if the matter concerns car ennobling, power enhancement, exhaust systems, chassis, light alloy rims, carbon aerodynamics, interior or other, but here one can find also competent information to give new life to classic cars.

The E 63 AMG 4Matic S model is not at all “child of sadness” – already when leaving the production place at Affalterbach. But the VAETH professionals, nevertheless, could not do otherwise than to give the finishing touches for a real thunder bird.

The basic engine of the Swabian vehicle with 585 HP (= 430 kW) has been pepped up by tuning kit named V 63 RS Export. This means an individual fine tuning of the engine electronics including Vmax boost. Furthermore, to this kit belong the modified VAETH turbo charger, the VAETH oil chilling system, a downpipe system reducing exhaust counter pressure and increasing, this way, the engine power and a VAETH axle back exhaust. This bundle of well pointed measures costs on the one hand 24,740.00 Euro, but on the other hand sensibly increases the pulse frequency of interested parties only when reading the performance characteristics: Out of 5.461 cm³ cylinder capacity come impressing 750 HP (551 kW) and electronically limited 1,000 Nm of torque! This allows – with corresponding tire approval – Vmax of 350 kmph (220 mph).
By the way – a MOT/certified version with 680 HP (= 500 kW) is also available.

After – of course optional – lowering by 20…40 mm using corresponding springs with coilovers on the front axle and electronic adaption of the rear axle for 1,166.20 Euro (plus 297.50 Euro for mounting including axle alignment) and considering the output volume, the time has come at least now to think about a suitable reinforcement of the serial ceramics braking system. VAETH suggest to take a set of racing braking pads and Castrol SRF racing brake fluid including flexible steel brake tubes.

Since chilled fuel is of higher density, its efficiency is being sensibly higher. The consequence of the considerably improved combustion are excellent exhaust values, less fuel consumption, lower combustion chamber temperature and more of power in the end. VAETH offers a fuel chiller for 1,773.10 Euro plus 416.50 Euro for mounting and air condition service.

It is now high time to talk about the absolutely optimal junction between car and road: the wheel-tire-combination. The VAETH team has installed three part forged rims with tinted in titan stars, in 9.0 x 20 in. on the front axle with tires 265/30ZR20 (1,542.24 Euro) and in 11.0 x 20 in. on the rear axle with tires 305/25ZR20 (1,832.60 Euro).

In order to improve aerodynamics, for lowering the lift and last not least for a more sportive and noble outfint a front spoiler made of high quality sight carbon has been installed, for which VAETH demands 1,416.10 Euro. To be added still another 238.00 Euro for mounting and MOT-certificate, each. Against upcharge, VAETH offers a rear diffusor for the E 63 S model tail end, also made of sight carbon, with fins and underbody extension for 2,011.10 Euro plus 178.50 Euro for mounting.

POSAIDON “RS 850”

Actually, the considerable serial output of 557 PS in the current Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, should be quite sufficient for most uses. Should be; there is a surprising number of performance fans who can never get enough of such a potent vehicle. Posaidon will gladly take care of this wish and by targeted measures generate so many additional PS in the E-class that no wishes will remain unfulfilled at all: Almost 300 PS extra turn the E63 AMG “RS 850″ into a hunter on the motorway that will hardly find its match in longitudinal dynamics. This performance treatment is made up of several mechanical and electronic components: For example, two upgrade turbochargers have been installed in connection with a changed charging air cooling. Furthermore, the suction paths of the 5.5 litres V8-biturbo drive have been optimised and the original exhaust system has been replaced by completely new exhaust technology, including turbo downpipes, racing sports catalysers and flap control. Thanks to fine coordination of the motor electronics, the drive output has now been increased to an incredible 853 PS by Posaidon, corresponding to an additional performance of precisely 296 horses. The torque, increased from 720 Nm to 1,300 Nm will render you speechless, as well.

The maximum speed is at 345 km/h, electronically limited. The gearbox and the rear axle also had to be optimised as resist the increased stress. In addition to the extreme development stage at 853 PS, the Posaidon specialists offer various other performance stages from 630 to 749 PS for all model series with M157 63 AMG biturbo motors, covering any customer wish. Result: With the “RS 850” Posaidon proves how much potential there is in this drive, using it relentlessly.

Ferrari’s new FXX K research and development programme receives its world premiere next weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The laboratory-car is based on Maranello’s first hybrid model and will grace the world’s tracks from next year onwards. The K in its moniker is a reference to the “KERS” kinetic energy recovery system it adopts in maximising its track performance.

Unfettered by homologation and racing regulations, the FXX K will never be used in competition. It was, in fact, developed to be completely uncompromising, incorporating technological innovations that will guarantee an unprecedented driving experience to the exclusive group of Client-Test Drivers with whom the Prancing Horse will roll out a test programme over the coming two years.

The car’s enormous potential is attested to by two significant figures:  a total power output of 1050 cv (860 cv delivered by its conventional V12 engine and 190 by its electric motor) and maximum torque in excess of 900 Nm.

The FXX K’s 6262 cc V12 features new camshafts and a modified valve train with mechanical rather than hydraulic tappets. The intake manifolds have been redesigned and given a special type of polishing treatment. The exhaust system has been modified as its silencers have been eliminated.

The HY-KERS system has been evolved specifically for pure performance with the result that the driver can control the function logics from the specific 4-setting Manettino on the centre console: Qualify, for maximum performance within a limited number of laps; Long Run to optimise performance consistency; Manual Boost for instant maximum torque delivery; and Fast Charge, for a fast recharge of the car’s battery.

A focus on delivering maximum efficiency at every stage of every track lap has resulted in extensive but integrated work on the entire car body in terms of both active and passive aerodynamics.

The front of the car is dominated by a twin-profile spoiler and a larger splitter, which is 30 mm lower, with a gap in its centre. This design is an application of the concepts developed to improve aero balance in the GT category of the WEC, which Ferrari has won for three consecutive years.  Two pairs of vertical elements, an endplate and, externally, a dive plane, together with vertical fins channel the air towards the car’s flanks, generating a longitudinal vortex that creates a localised depression. This in turn sucks the wake from the wheels to the outside of the aerodynamic underbody. Along with the side skirts that extend out from the sills, the vortex helps isolate the airflow from the underbody to boost its efficiency.

The solutions on the rear of the car are highly sophisticated, too. The tail section is now higher and the mobile spoiler extends further for a total increase in extension of 60mm when fully deployed. A vertical fin and a small wing each side of the tail act as guide vanes in the low drag configuration and boost the spoiler’s efficiency in the high downforce one. This system also creates considerable downforce at the rear of the car, allowing the use of an extreme diffusion volume for the rear diffuser which optimises air extraction from the underbody.  The section of the flat underbody just ahead of the rear wheels is also exploited to the full to generate downforce thanks to the reduced pressure in the wheel arch guaranteed by the direct connection to the rear of the car by a by-pass duct.

The result is a 50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration, resulting in a figure of 540 kg at 200 km/h.

Vehicle dynamics are further improved by the adoption of Pirelli slicks complete with sensors that monitor longitudinal, lateral and radial acceleration, as well as temperature and pressure. This ensures an accurate analysis of the interaction between the tyre and track surface, providing even more vital data to enable the traction control system to guarantee maximum performance.

The intervention level of the E-Diff electronic differential, F1-Trac traction control, Racing SSC (Side Slip Angle Control) – now specially calibrated to suit the car’s slick tyres – and the high-performance ABS can be controlled using the five-position Manettino on the steering wheel.

Aston Martin together with EON Productions, the producers of the James Bond film franchise, unveiled Bond’s stunning new car, the Aston Martin DB10, on the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios.

The luxury British sports car brand is delighted to confirm that James Bond will once again drive an Aston Martin in Spectre. On this occasion, it will be a model developed specifically for the film and built in-house by the brand’s design and engineering teams.

Led by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, the design team worked closely with the film’s director, Sam Mendes, to create the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy.

Celebrating the great British brand’s half century with Bond, which started with the iconic DB5, the DB10 gives a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins.

Dr Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin, said: “In the same year that we celebrate our 50-year relationship with 007, it seems doubly fitting that today we unveiled this wonderful new sports car created especially for James Bond.

“To be partnering once again with EON Productions is great news for this company and for everyone around the world that loves to see Bond at the wheel of an Aston Martin.

“I’m incredibly proud of everyone in the team at Gaydon who have brought this special project from concept to reality.”

Production will be strictly limited to 10 of the bespoke sports cars, developed and built by the designers, engineers and highly skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters.

Spectre is due for general release on 6 November 2015.
