The Avengers (2012)

I'm not usually excited or prepared for summer movies (actually not in any season), but this summer, I just may watch me some movies... at the theater! My cash supply is draining fast, so I'm trying to be selective and am planning my excursion carefully by doing a little research. Initial indications are that The Avengers should top the "To See" list.

I'm checking out these guides for help.

Summer Movie Guide from Rotten Tomatoes
The 2012 Techie/Geeky Summer Movie Guide from Network World
2012 Summer Movies from Movie Insider

I have to say, there are several movies I'm excited to see. Anyone want to comment on their favorite or most anticipated movie for the summer??? Please do. I need fresh ideas.

Oh and I found the io9 guide, How to Tell From a Trailer That a Movie is Going to Suck, helpful.

Happy Star Wars Day

First, it is from a weddings blog. For reals. Second, it's made of red velvet cake.

Lord Stark Cake Pops

It's been enough time since Lord Stark's tragic end, so surely the feelings of sadness, loss, anger, betrayal have subsided to the point where these can be fully enjoyed. Fill the belly, because winter is still coming. Revenge should guide you now.

BTW, if you are the nerdiest of geeks and thinking of getting married (which I always advise against), check out When Geeks Wed for inspiration.

The Truth About Crazy

Once Anderson Cooper got involved, my will broke. As you all should know, I have not the strength to resist Anderson.

No, I'm not laughing at Tubby Kitty. I'm laughing at Tubby Kitty's expression. I'm sure she, like all good kitties, loves Anderson and really isn't sure how to act upon finding herself sitting on Anderson's lap getting her ta-ta's tickled. I would have the same reaction.

Avenge Me!

I wish I had started keeping track of how many times AMC has shown Red Dawn this year. It's not a notable anniversary of this 1984, gloriously absurd, red scare masterpiece. WTF? Yet here it is again. And I'm watching it. I don't think I realized the invasion was a joint Soviet Russia/Cuba project. I mean, it makes perfect sense, of course, but why Colorado? I could truly talk about this movie all night... don't worry though. I won't.

It's on again tomorrow, May 9th and May 10th.
Just FYI.

I do enjoy watching the girls shoot their rifles.

See, The Internets is easy!

I know I have an odd sense of humor, but I like to think it's part of my charm. My friend, Char, has had a difficult time comprehending my all consuming affection for internet memes (see previous post). I truly love to share things I find completely awesome and am baffled when others don't share the love. Part of me fears that I'm failing in some way to properly demonstrate the awesome if others don't get the awesome. Yet I can only do so much....

I feel especially warm and fuzzy today after Char sent me this:

Lawyer Dog is doing law.

I'm so proud!! I was unaware of Lawyer Dog until now. Let's have a w00t for Char!

She also sent me the link to Zombie Yoga which makes me want to do yoga even more than ever (but not, of course, enough to DO do yoga) (and no, not "do-do" yoga which would be gross).

Get it @ Etsy from RobOsborne (also available: Superhero Yoga, Alien Yoga, and Pirate Yoga! Plus fun President and dinosaur prints)

Bend it like you're decomposing!

Not that I will cook anything, of course, but I'm sure someone else out there will. I'm just enjoying reading the descriptions of the various dishes. I can't say I want to try anything Dothraki, but the breakfasts of the North look pretty tasty.

Cesare Borgia steamy
glare is match only by his cannons

In a previous post, I wrote lovingly about the catapult and poo-pooed the cannon. Leave it to 15th century Rome to ignite a strange new fascination with the cannon. And of course I'm referencing The Borgias. There's some good cannon porn in season one, for sure, especially if you like chained cannonballs and some people do. This season, Rome adds some along the city walls and fabulously unveils them to King Charles and his French troops. And I must say each cannon makes Cesare Borgia look hotter (see left). No spoilers if you haven't watched it yet. Let's just say they are "cannons".... just watch it.

If you want to see some cannons in action (cannon fodder, as they say?), or just like to see historical weaponry, watch this clip from Showtime on War in the 15th Century.
You would not believe the number of fanvids showing slideshows of steamy Sean photos set to varying love songs or dance music. The collection dedicated to Count Alexei Vronsky (from the 1997 film Anna Karenina) is incredible in both size and ability to induce heart pounding sobbing.
------an aside----- read the book! In English and Russian.

I stumbled upon (not literally) this gem which I have to post for my Dad. He got me watching the Vicar of Dibley which I haven't seen in ages although it periodically comes on our PBS channel. I don't think I've seen this episode, but the clip here is a keeper.

And because I can't seem to turn away from the YouTube (its magic is strong), I'm sharing another. This one made me laugh out loud enough to scare the kitties off the sofa.

From their stronghold at Winterfell, the Starks guard the old ways against the dishonourable and fractious houses of the Seven Kingdoms. Their devotion to honour and the old gods wins them few friends in the court of King’s Landing and beyond, but this very same dedication to tradition commands respect from the lords of the North. Those Northmen who bend the knee to Eddard Stark have been hard won with respect, devotion, and justice. His sons show signs that they too will be well-respected and beloved leaders in the North upon ascending to the lordship of this enduring and storied house.

I must back up and explain something important about Sean Bean. Number One, he's my new celebrity hunk fixation. Number Two, he is one of the reasons I feel the need to travel South Yorkshire. And Number Three, he dies ... a lot. The characters he plays, sadly, don't often make it to the end of the film. This really didn't occur to me until I was irrevocably hooked on Game of Thrones. He plays a lot of bad guys, so being killed is the logical dénouement in whatever film he's in. Fine. I can accept that. However, in Game of Thrones (season one) he was the ONLY good guy (perhaps that's just my opinion, but when I was picking the House I would join, I could not imagine being anywhere other than House Stark.)! Without giving anything away to those who may not have seen all of season one, I will just say I'm a little heartbroken by the outcome.

Moving on... After seeing the clips for Ashley Judd's new series, "Missing", I was a little curious as I also love spy thrillers, but I have a hard time remembering to watch shows on the old networks. And then I read that Sean Bean plays her husband. Well heck yeah. I'm gonna watch that. Spoiler alert if you have not watched, but you just might as well guess. He's frickin blown up at the very frickin beginning of the first frickin episode! I thought to myself, "you've got to be shitting me."

If you don't believe me.. this is proof... The Sean Bean Death Reel.

FYI: this clip is a little violent.. like bloody. Sean is even quartered at one point. My Mother probably should not watch. But then it is kind of hilarious, so she should give it a go.

I realized however, while scrolling through Mr. Bean images (the best have him in historical/fantasy costumes), that his character in "Missing" is perhaps not actually dead. This is rather exciting news. Now I've got to go back and catch up on all the episodes I've missed. Glory days. He still may turn out to be a villain, which doesn't bode well, but I'm just happy he will have more than a 15 minute intro turn violent death.

namaste!

Inspiration

Inspiration. I have none. When this happens.. when curiosity escapes me, which is rare and, honestly, a little deflating, I turn to the Google. Not a general search, as I'm a little over the Google for most things, but image search. I go to the Google image search site and make up random words just to look at pictures. This morning I'm browsing "ancient garden accessories". I'm fascinated by the number of modern architecture photos. I'm equally delighted with the number of Buddhist statuary. It turned out to not provide a monstrous hit list, so I'm thinking of some unrelated words to add.

I'm also watching All About Steve because Mary Horowitz makes me happy. I love how often she embeds odd foreign language expressions into regular speech. She doesn't carry a gun, but she shoots red hot bullets nonetheless. New York Times doesn't agree... but I choose to ignore them on this issue.

Caesar - Civilization 1

My Tv fixation has inexplicably focused on battles great and small, from history and fantasy, against the living or already dead, with glorious weaponry, armory, and sometimes amazing digital cartography. All of which brings back the happy days of playing Civilization (usually for several days straight ). I, along with many friends, played Civ 1 thru 3 religiously. I remember dreaming of game moves and unexpected nuclear strikes. I also remember waking up a few mornings to slumped over, droopy-eyed sub-humans still playing a game that had turned to crap the day before. Aye, but we fought on, out of sheer stubbornness if nothing else because the fate of the known world rested in our hands!

One of my favorite things from playing Civilization was the catapult. Oh how I loved the catapults -- and how I hated the moment when the Iron Age dawned and every damn other civilization had cannons! I hated leaving behind my catapults. Although "Spartacus" has ended for the season, the final two episodes brought the catapult to life. Nearing the end of season two's "Vengeance", Spartacus and his merry band of ex-slaves, having set up shop near Mount Vesuvius, await the inevitable attack from Roman troops. The assault commences with raining balls of fire flying over the fortification. FIRE BALLS from catapults! I think I may have screamed out loud at the sight. I'm not going to try to get technical, but they seemed to be pretty realistic catapults, not trebuchets or ballistas.

Even more reminiscent of Civilization is "Game of Thrones", specifically the opening title sequence. It isn't just the animation, with growing realms and castles, or the map of strange lands. It is the brilliant telling of a timeless story of peoples and places with all the pageantry, music, and grand details. It gives me the same little chill bumps that I used to get when I built the Pyramids in Civ. It's truly the most creative thing I've seen in a long time. Beautiful and includes a giant map! With an unbelievably earwiggy theme song. I'm embedding the season one opener. Season two has a new sequence since there are new faces and lands to get to know, but since it's just started, I'm still partial to season one.

Oh and speaking of season one, I'm saving my long love letter to Sean Bean for a later post. Until then, have some fun surfing the internets using these links -
I've neglected the blog, among other things, for some time now. You might think that I'm busying myself in productive ways, seeing how I'm currently in a career transition, but you'd be wrong... and right. How does an over-educated, unemployed, demi-professional woman with a supremely curious, yet horribly disorganized, brain spend her mid-life sabbatical? Watching Tv. Oh, do not get uppity. I'm a child of the 80's, when Tv was bright, shiny, through a cable, and the portal to all things better. It's been my closest companion since I was old enough to walk to the big box and strong enough to turn the channel dial.

I've been watching a bit of everything -- it seems like I've missed a decade of television and film. Catching up and discovering all the new Smart Tv programs has been a fun challenge. So what's on my playlist? It's an odd assortment, but I've noticed a few themes:

Women Kicking Ass

Sean Bean

All Things British (particularly Yorkshire)

Rome

The Apocalypse

The Way Back Machine - 1980-1999

The list is somewhat in order of current preference and strangely reverse order of my media journey. There are some fun connections within the list on which you are free to ponder and comment.

I'll be back with more... gotta do some lame adult stuff for a minute. Much thanks goes out to my friends who have helped in this exploration, especially Todd who is a valuable source for all good telly.

NASCAR is Back!

There are so many reasons to love February and I do not count Valentine's Day. There's my birthday, my Daddy's birthday, President's Day, and the return of racing season. The season starts today with the Daytona 500 although it's raining right now and the race is delayed. NASCAR says the weather should improve later in the day and seems intent to get the cars moving at some point. Let's hope.

The news this year is focused on Danica Patrick who starts 29th in today's race. I'm a fan. I'll be rooting for her today. No, I don't plan to sit here expecting her to win (and will not be disappointed if she doesn't). Today is just another day in racing -- although it is the Daytona 500. She doesn't have to start the season with magical wins setting a bar that can never be surpassed. I just want to see a good race with Danica competing against the top NASCAR drivers. It will be a fun watch should it ever get started.

Not fun to watch is the Rick Santorum car. The #26 car is wearing a Santorum ad for the race. I am disturbed by this for many reasons including the fact that Rick Santorum isn't even at the race. What do you all think about using race car ads for political campaigns? Is it any different than any other branding or sponsorship? I would like to think so, but I'm starting to think I am out of touch.

It's really raining... keeping fingers crossed.

Mae C. Jemison - Astronaut & Pioneer

Dr. Mae C. Jemison

I've thought several times about posts I'd I like to publish for Black History Month. With February designated as Black History Month, there are so many articles and informative sites providing great material. I will admit; I haven't posted mostly out of laziness, but I also have a hard time deciding on what to post. I am not an expert in black history. Most of the information I have read lately is new to me, and so interesting I get lost reading and exploring (as with most things).

When I ran across a profile of Mae Jemison, I knew I wanted to share. Dr. Mae C. Jemison is an astronaut and physician. Inspired by Lt. Uhura in Star Trek, Dr. Jemison applied for NASA's astronaut program and was accepted in 1987. On September 12, 1992, Dr. Jemison became the first black woman to travel in space. As a Mission Specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor, STS-47, Jemison spent 190 hours, 30 minutes, and 23 seconds in space.

Of course, she captured my attention because she is an astronaut. Other things, perhaps little things, I've learned about her I find even more interesting. She is a woman from the South, not just any South, but 1950's Alabama. I have a special place in my heart for Women of the South. Even though she and her family moved to Chicago when she was young (as so many African-American's from the South did and still do), I am sure her surroundings -- her family, home, outlook -- remained identifiably Southern. In addition, from what I've read, she never set out to be or cared much about being the first black woman in space. Although inspired by the message of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, she heard it as a call for individual achievement. Her accomplishments since have been her personal commitment to her own interests and goals.

I'm sure people may have different opinions on her motivations and career path, but it is notable to me, perhaps a little inspiring, to see a woman committed to herself. Oh yeah.. I know that sounds "selfish". Think about it for a minute. Everyone should (and probably does) have a bit of selfish. Although common opinion and stereotypes would beg to differ, I think women fail to have enough selfish... or really, self-confidence or self-determination. I think women tend to identify themselves by their role in society -- usually through relationships to others -- rather than how they view themselves absent that relationship. More often, women are wives, mothers, grandmothers, caretakers, homemaker, and not so often, leader, scientist, artist, writer, astronaut.

Here's to Mae Jemison, girl from the South, astronaut, individual.

note: most info came from Wikipedia. Here's her personal site, and company site.

Firing Up My Engine

I've never been a morning person. I have learned to love early mornings... theoretically. I do get up early quite a bit and generally feel good about it. I just have a hard time getting the engine started and ready to go -- physically and mentally. My mental engine runs on inspiration. I don't necessarily need a full tank, but I must have a sufficient amounts to get going. It's like the day seems pointless without a sense that amazing things surround me yet to be discovered.

Therein lies my need for Pinterest. It is perfect for sparking some inspiration. Several of my friends kept mentioning this site to me urging me to join. I ignored it for a while since I feel a little overextended on the internets lately. I finally jumped right in and haven't looked back. A morning scroll through different things tends to ignite something, usually fairly undefined at first, in me. No, I don't jump into a craft frenzy (although how awesome would that be?) or decide I should redesign my house. It is simply the flurry of images which, once amassed in my brain, form a mysterious collective of "exalting influence" (full disclosure, I stole that from dictonary.com). Whatever... it's a fun exploration, am I right?

Stonehenge Apocalypse?

I've been on a self-improvement mission. Since losing my job, I am happy to report that I'm rediscovering many things again.. things about myself, things I thought I had lost. Unfortunately this has caused the blog to be neglected. I've also put TV on the back burner...except for my all time favorite entertainment genre, The Apocalypse. Nothing says "Good Times" like The End of Days.

I popped on the tube a couple of hours ago for a chillax sit-down. The SyFy Channel blazed to life and it was immediately clear there was some apocalypse going on. I hit the "guide" button which caused me to momentarily fixate on the title and description. It said "Stonehenge Apocalypse"? Really? Really? As much as I love apocalypse movies, I'm not so sure I like the idea of turning Stonehenge into a force of doom. Oh and don't even bother clicking the link above which is to the SyFy original movie site. They have one unspectacular photo and nothing else. You'd think the SyFy Channel would know how to put some informative gadgetry on the internets. #fail. Check it out at Wikipedia or IMDb.

Stonehenge Apocalypse
It's also in German. Click for trailer.

Anyway, back to the movie. As skeptical as I was, I just had to know how Stonehenge would bring about our demise. I'm still watching... and it is a wacky, completely unbelievable trip. Originally airing in June 2010, Stonehenge Apocalypse couples the cataclysmic, destructive power of Earth's electromagnetic field with the ancient, extraterrestrial terraforming machine buried under Stonehenge. Together they awakening pyramids all over the world, which, of course, are poised to volcanically erupt. Uh.. wait. what I've already lost track of what's going on and why all that will lead to the end of the world.

Doesn't matter. I'm still watching. Why? Because this is monolithically stupid. Yet it combines so many things that are supremely fun. Of course, the whackjob scientist figures it all out, redeeming himself before all the folks who had written him and his crazy talk off. That is standard in any doomsday story, along with the also included leap to nuke whatever is causing problems. This movie however also has ancient aliens, gamma bursts, a cult leader (strangely played by Hill Harper), lovely English countryside, some silly special effects, and laughable dialogue. For example -

"I'm no mucky muck scientist, but I thought our planet was life sustaining."

"Pushing it's wavelength this short is turning Stonehenge into a nuclear reactor."

"Relax, you have a front row seat to the planet's rebirth."

"It was a robot head!"

As much as I'm enjoying making fun of this movie, I'm not a fan. I don't buy the bizarre plot. I like my apocalypse stories to be somewhat believable, based on scientifically sound destructive events, coupled with fantastically heroic, scientifically improbable, responses. This ancient terraforming machine business just doesn't sit well with me. A little too goofy.

Hmmm... 2012 Ice Age is up next!!! Joke... although I might just have to see what causes this ice age. In all seriousness, I cannot love The Walking Dead more. I love this new season/half season. When it comes to the apocalypse, I hope for a zombie apocalypse. w00t!

Crocheted Shorts?

This is just what I've needed to hear/see/read/believe for a long time. It is the perfect manifesto. Please read carefully and digest. This is my vision... MY manifesto.

The Holstee Manifesto

This manifesto is from Holstee, a shop featuring unique designs and sustainable products. It is available in a large size print..... which I want.

More Super Bowl As Viewed from the Internets

Information is beautiful. It can also be insightful and a little silly. Let's take the Super Bowl and Twitter which I wrote about yesterday. Minneapolis based advertising agency, Colle + McVoy, created a full game timeline of Super Bowl related tweets called SuperChatter.

Super Chatter from Colle+McVoy

According to the description on the site, over 600,000 tweets were collected by searching for 250 specific terms associated with "Super Bowl". With that information, Colle+McVoy created a scrolling timeline from pre-game through the final ads illustrating the number of tweets per minute broken down into categories including "half time" (there are even sub-categories). It's perfectly brilliant, although I wish I could see some of the tweets. Yet right there is a visual recap of the game shown through social media -- reactions to game events, plays, scores, plus, and probably what the advertisers want to see, reactions to the ads. Incredible really.

I also understand Amazon tweeted promotional info related to music heard during ads, but I haven't yet found through details on this. Anyone have that info??

The Real "Super" from Bowl Sunday

Eh.. the Hipsters like to say they aren't into sports. That may be true, but Hipsters have no defense against silly commercials and the Twitter. I barely watched the "game"; I follow public events via Twitter. It's like a real-time Mystery Science Theater. The commentary from the twitterverse keeps things super exciting. According to the New York Times, a new record was set for mass tweets; over 10,000 tweets flew the coup during Madonna's half time show each second! Back to Madonna in a bit.

I first have to plug my favorite part of the Super Bowl: Superbowl Science 2012 from one of my favorite geeky science writers, Phil Plait. He tweeted loads of fun science facts related to football, all of which are compiled by quarter at his blog, Bad Astronomy (link above).

So back to a quick note on Madonna. Srsly.. who is complaining about Madonna? I thought her half-time performance was great, terrific FUN! Checking around the googleverse, I am discovering my opinion may not be shared by all (dim wits). Yeah, the haters be hatin. Last night, most of the tweets I saw were very positive, yet sprinkled with gay jokes. But I did not get a sense (or hear) a collective gag reflex. So why the hatin today? From the (very little) research I've done, the tough guy / fake maker crowd thinks she bombed. Can I just point out the obvious? Football überfans probably are not the biggest Madonna fans and those who are, probably aren't declaring it to their social networks (not that they hide it, but simply aren't *thinking* about her in the lead up to the big game). The research done to gauge the "like" factor of Madonna was seemingly concentrated on the average football fan (surely male, surely).

Am I missing something? Who freakin cares about the average football fan? I like some football. I watch games during the season, but don't really care about the "championship game" unless it's college basketball. The Super Bowl is a national holiday; it's an excuse to have a big, loud party late on a Sunday night. Piles of people watched the game last night simply because they were at a Super Bowl party, or were following it on twitter, and a good many of those, watched to see Madonna. I know I did. Next fall, some monotone rock bands and country singers will be back. Don't fret.

Time and distance have magic though. Once the number crunchers get through the actual content of the tweets and other social media reports, with the help of Urban Dictionary, I think a different picture of the half-time reaction will emerge. Early in the evening, I felt the queasy tummy that alerts me an 80's nostalgic moment is upon us. Ferris Bueller, Echo and the Bunnymen. Please... they were buttering us up.

Haters gonna hate. That's the nature of the internets. And haters will always call women "old" and poo poo the notion that they should even come out of the house. All you can do is dance around them (for world peace). Madonna is a powerful, brilliant woman who does her own thing. She will never have an approval rating over 50% even if she adopted a southern accent. I have one finger for that... and M.I.A. beat me to it.

On the upside... Madonna did bring some gays to the game. You know, there are many gay men who like football, but I have to think the gay audience doubled last night. And then there are the jokes...

I didn't come here to have a Madonna moment!! I came here to have a David Beckham moment.... again. So yeah, I dug the half-time dance-a-thon (for world peace), but my Sunday was Super for this....

ummmmmmmm. Afterwards, I noticed a flurry of tweets from men declaring they will be rushing out to get some of these undies. Sally Forth, dudes. I support that decision.
