Peace

So This is the New Year?

Life can be funny sometimes. Not just funny "ha ha", but funny as in, "huh, that's kind of makes me think..." I spent the Christmas holidays rubbing some hope matches together in an attempt to spark a kind of internal Big Bang. I wanted and needed a new sense of optimism and I was intent on sparking one to life. Optimism is not at all foreign to me, but it has been a long time since we've hung out and shot the bull. It was time we had a get together. Surprisingly, it didn't burst into being like I had wanted, but something did ignite. I didn't realize it for a while; it stayed quite and simmering. As the New Year started, I realized something had indeed come to existence, and I wasn't going to question the how, when, and why. I just knew I felt a new sense of strength and purpose. Although it wasn't fiery or consuming, it allowed me to think that everything was going to work out.

Funny. The New Year started off and I promptly lost my job. I had even started off the year dressing up for work, blowing off the extra casual days we got during the holidays. I was especially dressed nice on the day I was sent packing. So funny. My life had become my job with a monstrous, never ending "to-do" list. The last two years are a bit of a blur, just fuzzy images of getting up, going to work, come home, repeat. In a matter of moments, it was all gone.

My initial fear was that without the all consuming job I would be an empty vessel. Having done nothing or thought about anything but the job for so long, it was difficult to imagine life without it. Yet life does go on. Having shed the immobilizing and constricting skin of a job that left me feeling dead, I am slowing growing into a livable life. Maybe that optimism I caught continues to burn. Or maybe I'm delusional. I'm going to go with optimism though... for now. The New Year has brought a lot of new, and I've got to think that will include a new me with a new sense of purpose, new opportunities, and new found hope and happiness.

“Our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world as being able to remake ourselves.” ~Gandhi

I'm hopeful I can sustain this optimistic outlook. For good measure and an opportunity to "accomplish" something, I am working on organizing my music collection! In alphabetical order, of course. Nothing makes me smile like orderly arrangements. Oh and I redesigned the blog. TwentyTwelve is off to a great start, huh?
Have you missed me? I've been spending a good bit of time redesigning the blog. Within that process, of course, was learning a lot of .html and .css code. As someone has recently pointed out, I tend to get lost in the minutiae. So you can image how lost I get when buried in code (and something I really am not good at).

Here's the result. It is always a work in progress, but I think I'm finally to a point where I can look up, breath, and get back to posting. What do you think? I'd like to know what you think and especially how well the fonts read on your monitor. I've really learned a lot recently how different IE handles things. Just FYI -- I use Google's Chrome browswer and probably will never leave it. Left Firefox long ago and IE back in the 90's. I still periodically use IE to test things and had to implement some minor tweets to get IE to handle some of my changes.

If you are like me, you may be at a point in your life where you are losing your eyesight. It is a huge bummer because I am a font nazi and hate resizing/scaling for poor vision. I'm using different fonts on the site which may not be entirely eye-friendly, so I would like to know if anyone runs into trouble.

Ok.. so that's my morning hello and welcome. Stay and enjoy.

Lately I have been finding great wisdom and comfort from the Dalai Lama. He has a terrific website, by the way, so I encourage you to visit his site for more. There are also beautiful photographs.

His recent posts on Facebook are reminders we all need to hear.

Generosity is the most natural outward expression of an inner attitude of compassion and loving-kindness. When one desires to alleviate the suffering of others and to promote their well-being, then generosity - in action, word, and thought - is this desire put into practice. It is important to recognize the "generosity" here refers not just to giving in a material sense, but to generosity of the heart.
-- Dalai Lama, posted January 17, 2012

In the face of all the challenges we face today, is my optimism about the future of humanity idealistic? Perhaps it is. Is it unrealistic? Certainly not. To remain indifferent to the challenges we face is indefensible. If the goal is noble, whether or not it is realized within our lifetime is largely irrelevant. What we must do therefore is to strive and persevere and never give up.
-- Dalai Lama, posted January 13, 2012

These words are my motivational tools.

The Blog is still under construction and I can't say I work at lightning speed. However I needed to post this today as my own morning feel good kick in the rear. I generally, and lazily, rely on coffee to get the day started, but that should never be enough. One must have or develop a spark to ignite the inner engine which forces forward motion.

namaste.

Mostly because I'm becoming horribly forgetful, but I also tend to miss things as I tend to surf through millions of things both in mind and matter. If you also like to reminisce about the glory that was the past, here's my favorite wrap ups for 2011.

Gawker looks back at the Best Things We Read All Year. Plucked from all over the internets, this list has some wonderful articles and silly business that you probably missed.

NPR has lists for the best of everything in the world.

FailBlog has the top fails for 2011. And they are good.

Wired has a Best of Pop Culture - I'm happy to see Homeland made the list.

And my favorite stuff of all times - internet memes.... there's lots.

@ Straight from Know Your Meme
@ Ranker's list of Funniest Memes is actually pretty thorough.
@ I Heart Chaos has a great Best Memes of 2011. Also pretty thorough.
@ Geek Sugar has a Best Memes list, but it's not awesome.
To get you started, go out tonight to see a bright Jupiter next to the Moon. Should be great assuming the weather cooperates.
awwww yeah. I am so ready, the timer has gone off twice. And you know where I will be tonight... with my TV Boyfriend, Anderson Cooper and his friend-girl who does not make me jealous, Kathy Griffin. I'm so excited; I've been picking out comfortable pajamas all day... and drinking like a fish. hahahah.. I mean.. that is a joke.

Anyhoo... In preparation for our evening together, I have been daydreaming about how cute and silly he is. When Kath tweeted earlier what questions she should ask AC360, I replied that I simply want to see him blush and giggle uncontrollably.

Here is the archive of my brains...

TV Boyfriend harnessing the cute of
my Gay Boyfriend, ZQ.

and of course... one of the best things on the internets...

sqweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh!!! I'm so excited, I almost peed on myself.

I do not plan to post the video (or any video) featuring the 1986 hit song, "The Final Countdown" by Europe, as much as I'd love to. BTW, the link used for the song is due to the oddness of the site it's on. I digress... again. No, I'm counting down the last hours of 2011 and the time in which I have to scurry to get my CLE hours. I'm doing an immigration webcast this morning which is really pretty good. The lawyers presenting are knowledgeable and, equally important in my book, pretty funny guys. In addition, per usual I guess for Nashville lawyers, they are also musicians. Score. I always love it when presenters bring their big, hefty law books. Rockin Nerd Lawyers. Two thumbs up. Not linking to any specifics or people, but if you are in Tennessee or needing Tennessee CLE hours, please head to the Tennessee Bar Association. They have great online offerings.

I'm now stuck on the song "The Final Countdown" and its inexplicable resurgence in Youth Culture. If I can recall correctly, it is a song I heard over and over and over in some video game. I can't remember it right now, but I can feel I am correct on this. I will research and return. If the Nephew is reading (unlikely, I know), I am sure you know the answer to this. You can email me with the answer since you have a fancy new computer and I am a million miles away from my family and loved ones over the holidays. Does guilt even work on youngins anymore?

whatever.. I gotta get back to my professional duties... but before I go.....

Happy Last Day of the Year... Twenty Twelve is upon us. And I "Like" how that looks written out. Am I right? Let's start writing it out. There is something wonderful about the look of things when designed to look wonderful... when thought is put into typography and format. Twenty Twelve is practically a freebie for designers and graphic artists looking for inspiration and/or building blocks for the new year. Have at it, I say. Sally Forth!

Similarly awesome would be to start using Roman Numerals. MMXII looks super awesome... classic, even.

It has become (or has always been, when you think about it) an art form. Twenty Twelve already offers up some terrific choices in calendar design if you are looking for beautiful, retro, artistic calendar options. Some of the best I've seen so far are found here at Design Love Affair. I find this one particularly amazing -- mostly it is the design and colors, but also for the amount of interesting information located within and around. This calendar can be purchased in an interfaith edition (seen to the left) and it includes the End of the Long Mayan Count, known here in the States as the Apocalypse. Please visit the designer's site for more information, photos and purchasing options (be sure to click "EU" or "Worldwide" to get to the choices).

All of this leads me to the upcoming London Olympics. Yes, this is how my mind works. They will be in 2012 after all. Combine the year and the kick off competition that is the design of the Olympic Games, and you get anarchy... heh.. Anarchy in the U.K. no less (God how I love Wikipedia). So if you click on over to the London Olympics you can meander around and look at their brand designs, logo, and mascot.

If you are like me, you got tired of reading a bunch of mumbo jumbo about using their "Brand". So I am not posting or linking to their "Brand" right now. Mostly out of annoyance. My point however is that I have tooled around the site for a few minutes and have found NOTHING to inspire me in their designs, style, or use of numbers. If their logo is that broken piece of decorative glass that appears to be trying to run away, I am so not a fan. I realize this has been a bit of a controversy over in the Motherland, but since it "worldly" American news media ignores it until it is prime time (a.k.a. "on the tv" with "heart warming personal interest stories"). Iran even declared it racist. And I do realize it was designed by a student and chosen through competition. However, if you take it to the Google, you will easily see some superior logo designs that are out there.... just sayin.

Good Lord... what time is it? Is it 2012 in Australia yet? Nerds....

Signing off so I can enjoy our final day before the beginning of the end of times.

I am 3.7 hours short of having my required CLE (continuing legal education) hours for 2011. Not a huge deal, but my license/career/job is on the line. It may be a Friday night and the beginning of a long holiday weekend, but I am sitting in front of the computer doing what I have to do - like a grown up. It isn't a horrible drag. Luckily so much CLE is online now, either as a webcast (airing live) or as online video (with or without a live audience). It really helps lawyers find seminars or presentations that fit their interest or need.

The bigger problem for me is the inherent distraction of world wide web since I am online. Plus, I'm fighting off an sudden compulsion to redesign my blog. I've been thinking about this for a while, so sitting here makes me think this is the perfect time. But I shall not.... right now. But stay tuned...

Wish me luck!!

"Hey Hey Hey. You awake?
Huh, yes? Hey." - Newton

The morning began early with an excited Newton waiting for me to finally open my eyes. Sometimes I can feel eyeballs staring at me as I awake and I've learned to control how and when my eyes pop open. I know the Boogers anxiously await that moment, and once the moment arrives, there is no going back. They have been waiting for hours to tell me things or ask obnoxious questions. Not that I'm complaining, really. I mean, I do the same thing.

Perhaps because it is Christmas, my eyes reflexively opened right away -- to the face you see at the right. Newton clearly was close to combustion waiting for the moment when he can finally have all my attention.

"Yes, Newton?" I asked.

"You will not believe what happened last night!! You getting up now? You should get up. The sun is already up, you know."

Good grief, I thought. I got up. It was Christmas morning after all. Following my normal routine, I rolled out from under two kitties and made my way to the bathroom. Newton was not patient, but followed me downstairs afterwards following his normal routine. Before I could get to the coffee maker, he plunged right into a full play by play of the night's events.

"I heard this loud noise last night so I ran downstairs to check it out. And I caught this big, crazy guy coming down the chimney with garbage bags. Srsly. I wasn't scared though."

"Good thing I went down there. I mean, who knows what would have happened. He was big. He could have killed us all or stolen all our food. I got him though. I bit his nose and scratched up his face real good. He fell out of the chimney, but ran out of the house. He almost left his bags of garbage, but I jumped on them and he grabbed them up as he went out the door."

"Why you look at me funny?"

"There were cookies sitting by the fireplace, but Darwin eatted them. Not me. I told him you would be mad, but he never listens to me."

Sure enough. No presents for me anywhere. I can at least say Santa intended to visit me. I wasn't a bad girl after all!! Sadly, Santa may never visit me again.

And so it goes....

MERRY CHRISTMAS Everyone.
I'm frequently surprised and disappointed that there aren't more shared stories in the media sphere that are uplifting. Happiness documented leaving a smile on your face -- what a novel idea. This story may not be your happy story, but I will share with the hope that you at least smile.
Before beginning, I thought I would check in on the Facebook and "like" some silly posts my friend, Jason, had posted earlier about the Berlin Wall. I read a lot of Facebook posts via email and have to delay adding my "like" or commentary which really ruins some of the fun of Facebook, I must say. I've been sitting on my overwhelming need to "like" his post and comment about how he left his wife, Maggie, off the post, since 9:30 this morning. Needless to say, Maggie beat me to pointing out her absence. Another irritant of Facebook lag.

The first thing I saw when I logged on was a video from Catster called Hanukkah Cat ---

Cat celebrates Hanukkah

Here's the link to the video on YouTube. It had me with the hat. I could not resist. And then I could not resist scrolling through all the other Hanukkah kitty videos. Three hours later I can't remember what I had planned to do with the computer sitting in front of me. Although I did manage to squeeze in two episodes of "Homeland" and give myself a manicure. That's just nearly a score.

Now that the sun is surely down over most of world that is finishing out the 25th day of Kislev, I wish you all Happy Hanukkah. Grab your kitty and light your candle!!

note: there are truly awesome Hanukkah kitty toys and gifts should you need some. And srsly, I beg you all to please make these epic Dressy Cats holiday cut-out displays (below). PLEASE. And send me photo. I know my Mother will be the only one who wants to do this, but give her a break this holiday season.

I have to say, I will miss the sea. It has been beautiful and an incredibly wonderful trip. As a lifelong landlocked person, going into the ocean is like visiting another planet. Everything is foreign and mysterious. I want, no MUST, touch and see everything and imagine its purpose and history. Being out at sea is truly the most tranquil and calming experience in the world.
Yes, I'm still alive. I took a bit of a hiatus from writing due to having absolutely no desire to share anything. You know that saying - if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all. I haven't had anything nice to say.

However, I am on a great quest in search of my long lost spunky. I'm also on a Caribbean cruise with my little brother. I am determined to be hopeful of my spunky's return and to be welcoming when I see it again. In the meantime, I am floating at sea.
It is customary to celebrate the end of the work week by wearing your sport team in a show of dedicated fandom. This is especially big during football season, especially for Titans fans, and especially for those who own nice official jerseys.
This trend may be true all over the South. I just never noticed it until moving here. I've also never participated. I don't own any fangear, so I use casual Friday to wear odd assortments of kitteh wear. Today, I woke up feeling it was time to show my roots and hollah to my team. I'm wearing a loud red Razorback t-shirt. Whooooo pig. It is a family shirt, inherited from Rosie along with other Hawg memorabilia. I feel good; I feel casual and I feel Friday!
Just so no one thinks I'm "mainstream", I am wearing Spaghetti Cat on the feet and Chococat in the ears. Srsly. Kittehs make Friday.
TGIF, ya'll. Whooooo Pig.

via da crackberry!

Flynn the Librarian: Always
talking in paragraphs.

If your franchise moniker is "The Librarian", you're surely prepared for the nerd grrls to love you madly. I've missed the Librarian; I think I may be two or three movies behind. This Sunday morning, I'm surfing the toob for some mindless eye candy.. you know, just until I'm good and awake... or the race starts or a game is on. There in all his adorkable glory is the "bookish brainiac Flynn Carson" in "The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice". This movie is from 2008? Dang.. where have I been? Or have I seen this? I don't think so. I would remember New Orleans. I would also have remembered Flynn speaking Russian.

I realize Flynn is a fictional character. But aren't most fictional characters based on real life influential or notable people? Sure, I know most librarians are probably this awesome, but srsly. Where the hell are these bookish, braniac adventurers? Do any live in Nashville? If you are reading these, and you think you are all that and a sweet book collection, give me a hollah.

I'm gonna watch some of this for a while.. at least until I can find another awesome distraction.

namaste.
As you should know by now, I'm a public transportation gal. I love my bus and my bus buddies. Without it / them I surely would be institutionalized. Yet I worry that, like most other things I enjoy, I've developed an routine of dependence. Or (possibly in addition) a dependence on routine. It definitely keeps me from jumping in the car for spontaneous adventures. Not that I don't, on occasion, really want to; doing so just ends up feeling like a bit of a hassle. This simply could be indicative of laziness. However, I wonder at times whether getting a sweet new ride would get me back on the map.

My Velvet Mama

I love the Mini Cooper. If I were to splurge for kicks, or to remedy my mid-life crises, I would get a shiny little Mini. Convertible in Velvet Silver. There is currently a $500 off promotion for select 2011 manual transmission models (which is ALL I drive). Sheesh.. I'm starting to convince myself. The fun thing about cars right now is the technological advances. If I wanted to sound hip and intelligent, I would talk about fuel efficiency and my devotion to minimalism. But really, I want all the gadgetry, the USB ports, HD radio, and connectivity. What can I say; I'm a nerd.

While driving out east to the Bristol Race, the guys and I spotted our first Fiat. Yes... FIAT. Not sure what comes to mind when you think of Fiats, but I remember my grandfather having one back in the 80's and everyone in the family making fun of him. Oh but you know we had a big financial crisis and stuff. Fiat saved the old Chrysler and now has a big, nice American audience to impress. The Fiat has been here since late 2010, but I sure haven't noticed. Apparently now, JLo is the body and sound of the Fiat to the annoyance of most of the population of people who may be interested in the car. The car isn't hopping off the lot, but it has gotten good reviews.

La mia bello fantastico Mocha Fiat

Just surfing over the website, it clearly is the working gal's Mini. Much cheaper, and cool gadgetry comes standard (MP3 radio and connectivity). AND all the Italian names for things make it very chic. The Fiat's special grooviness is the "Blue & Me" integrated gadgetry system which allows hands-free access to mobile devices. From what I can tell, Fiat has compatibility with more gadgetry makers than generally found in such things (I'm guessing at that, really). I'm just pleased that the whole system isn't created solely for iPods. I didn't pile on as much bling as I did the Mini, but I could easily go for the Mocha Awesome above and spend HALF of what I could spend on the Mini.

So what's a daytripping deprived grrl to do? I've noted that Fiat does not yet have a "studio" in Nashville. But there's one in Memphis which is itself something to look further into. I do not imagine Memphis being a blazin Fiat market. I'm going to study this.

The Nephew, who is soooo into cars right now, will be happy when Fiat finally brings the Alfa Romero back to the States. I know it isn't German, but I have a feeling this will be working its way onto his wishlist. Good luck with that Squirt. I'm sure you'll at least be able to get one for the Nintendo 3D thingy.
