Through the Glass……I loved this month’s Blog Circle theme and the possibilities it presented.

As someone who makes their living from portrait photography, I don’t always get as many photos of my own children and family as I would like.  In an effort to pick up my camera more to capture the personalities and moments of my kids, I will be posting once a month from a theme with a group of talented Photographers from Clickin Moms’…..an online community for both hobbyist and professional photographers! At the end of this post you will see a link to the next photographer in the group.  Click on their link to see their take on our theme!

I found an old window to shoot through and appreciate the texture and character it gave to the last two images….an interesting, pensive, vintage feel.

My oldest child posed for me (with the help of a little bribe, hehe) and here is the result.  Can’t wait to get outside when the weather finally gets warm!

This month’s theme for the Photographer Blog Circle I am participating with is “April Showers.”

Well folks, there has not been much in the way of rain here in Laramie but we have had plenty of SNOW and WIND.

So any ideas I may have had about cute rain boots, umbrellas, etc. will have to be postponed until old man winter decides to let go of the ferocious and bitter hold he has had on our area. Yes, we are ready for SPRING photo sessions around here!

So here is my take on this month’s theme:  Showers of Love.   Spring suggests all things new, beautiful, and amazing after a long, 9 month wait and so does a precious, sweet newborn!

The Tonka truck in the following photos are from this little man’s dad when he was a boy.  I just LOVE it when clients bring items along for their session that have sentimental meaning!
Mom requested this shot.  Big sis did a perfect job of playing the disgruntled older sister.  But as you can see a bit farther down, actually ADORES her small, sweet brother!It makes me HAPPY when mums and dads jump in for shots with baby……these are the moments that are so precious and fleeting……Please visit the next photographer in our “April Shower” themed Blog Circle.  Check out what Lisa’s take is HERE!

Around here, when we are planning for a senior portrait session, we never know what the weather is going to do!  If it’s not blizzarding or raining like crazy, we consider the weather GOOD, no matter what the temperature really is!  Since this Senior boy and his folks had come all the way from Nebraska for his Photo session, we were all hoping for even “pretty good.”   And though it was a bit windy, hey, we’ll take it and run with it!

Dawson and his family requested that for his photos we mix the session up:  both URBAN and COUNTRY locations.  Since we’ve got some of each here in Laramie, not a problem.

This Senior has all brother’s in his family so his mom and I immediately had that in common and we enjoyed discussing life when you are the ONLY FEMALE in a house full of BOYS!!  It’s a WONDERFUL life and I wouldn’t CHANGE A THING but I am convinced there is an extra special  measure of grace given to us moms of boys.

It’s always fun to reach out to and draw inspiration from others in the photography industry. Today I am posting an interview about my friend and fellow photographer Lydia Lynn who is a Colorado Springs, CO based photographer. Lydia has a soft, romantic, and beautifully sun-washed style that I admire so much!

Tessa:  What camera equipment do you use?

Lydia:  I absolutely love my Canon 5D Mark II.  I love the way it captures natural light and makes it so much easier to shoot in low light, something I’m a pretty big fan of. Recently, I’m loving my 85mm 1.8 and the compression of the images it creates.  I definitely have to have my trusty 50mm 1.4 too. The focal length feels really natural to me and it creates pretty great bokeh.  My 28mm 1.4 also takes gorg photos too, but I don’t usually use it for portrait photography. It’s my “mess-around” lens. J

Tessa:Who do you draw inspiration from in the industry?

Cruising other photographers websites is one of my favorite past times, so it was really hard for me to choose, especially since there is so much talent out there. Here are my top three!

Jose Villa. Jose Villa uses (nearly) all natural light and film to create simple, but somehow, stunningly gorgeous wedding photographs. I’m not sure how he does it, but I’m always blow away by the simplicity and beauty of his wedding portraits.

Andria Lindquist. She’s a Seattle photographer that photographs weddings and much more, but for me it’s her knack for showing the unusual beauty of real life that inspires me every time. I love her use of light, lines and architecture. She’s also quite the world traveler, which makes me super jealous, haha! Here’s a glimpse of her amazing work.

Jason+Gina Photographers are a Denver wedding photography team whose work is natural and oh-so-Colorado. Here is one of my all-time favorites; an elopement photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park. Every time something from them shows up in my Facebook newsfeed, I’m always blown away!

Tessa:  What kind of music do you listen to when working?

Although it depends a lot on my mood and what I’m working on,  Zac Brown Band is a huge favorite, since I love country music (some, anyway). I’m also a big fan of the classics (Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, the Romantics, Aretha and lots more). My Brett Dennen station (which plays obviously, Brett Dennen; Fruit Bats, The Shins, Mason Jennings and on and on) is another go-to. Also, I love Fun. But really, who doesn’t love them?  I’ve also been known to listen to a little Taylor Swift. It makes me hate myself a little, but I really can’t resist bopping along when it comes on.

Annnnd, now you all know how cool I am!

Tessa:  Where do you draw inspiration from outside the industry?

Lydia:  I draw inspiration from anything and everything. Driving is always great inspiration for me because I like to think about where I’d place my subjects in the landscape. More often than not, nature itself inspires me. I also love looking at old record album covers, 1960’s fashion magazines, and watching 50’s movies. Finally, I’m inspired most often by music and the feelings and emotions it evokes.

Tessa:  When you’re not photographing, what to do you do for fun?

 Lydia:  I love hanging with my family, camping, fashion and trying anything new (especially exotic food). I also really love to travel, and plan to visit South America, Thailand and the Caribbean next!

Love is…

As you may remember, Catherine was Miss Wyoming two years ago and I had the very special privilege of getting to know her after photographing her Miss America headshot.  Imagine how excited  we  were when we found out she was ENGAGED to a very handsome COWBOY and that they  wanted us to photograph their engagement session and their wedding coming up in August 2013.

While discussing options for their engagement session one of the first things they mentioned is that they wanted something outdoors, something big and beautiful, and what could be better than our very own Snowy Range Mountains!  We are just so very fortunate to live in Laramie where gorgeous scenery such as this is just a short drive away and the creative photographic opportunities are just endless!

One of the perks/surprises of traveling to the mountains is that you never know what the weather is going to do!  Thank goodness our clients are tough, Wyoming bred folks who are up for anything including snow, wind, rain, sleet, sun which all of us got to experience in varying doses, all within a few minutes of our time here!  Here is what Catherine had to say after our session was over:

“Clint and I just finished the most unique, dynamic, wonderful engagement session with Tessa and Damon!  We shot in freezing temperatures, sleet, rain, wind and amazingly all the factors combined into beautiful artwork capturing our love! So looking forward to our big day and having them capture it!”

We just couldn’t resist taking a stroll through these gorgeous aspen trees and this cool, romantic country road!!

This farm is where Clint worked and because it has such good memories for him, he asked if we could do part of the photo session here, which was just the icing on the cake to round out the whole Wyoming western lifestyle!

Life in the country just doesn’t get any better than this!  And why not dance on the prairie with only the cows watching?

Every couple has a story that is unique and beautiful.

This is one of the most rewarding privileges we have as photographers, to give that story a voice with a fine art twist!

When Clint and Catherine contacted us about their Engagement portraits, they mentioned right away that one of the angles of their love story that they wanted us to document was how they met in the soup kitchen of their church.  They asked if they could use our kitchen for part of the photo session.  Of course we said yes!

We asked Clint and Catherine if they would share a bit about their experience falling in love and how they met.  Here it is, in their words:

“Without God opening the doors and shining His light on their hearts, Clint and Catherine wouldn’t be where they are today: in each others arms. After numerous (secret) attempts by their mutual friends to set them up, Catherine’s dear friend and co-worker, Emily finally gave the situation to God and thanked Him for taking care of the rest. Soon after, Clint and Catherine locked eyes across the room at the High Plains Community Church soup kitchen, Sunday, 11/13/2011. They poured their hearts out to each other while serving pea salad and made plans to see each other again. The rest is history! Through Miss Wyoming experiences and adventures in Colorado and Wyoming, Clint and Catherine grew to be inseparable, despite their busy schedules.

After a summer trip to Dallas to meet Catherine’s family, the deal was sealed. Clint proposed Labor Day weekend after a beautiful horseback ride in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The love, the moment, and the proposal couldn’t have been more perfect! With their friends and family by their sides, the couple plans to say, “I do” beneath Devil’s Tower on August 31, 2013. “

This sweet baby girl’s mother requested a session that would replicate photos from her childhood with her sisters.  Mom wanted a similar dress and chair and was hoping for a vintage feel.  Those of you who know me or follow my work have seen my penchant for all things vintage, old fashioned, and nostalgic.  We had a wonderful time,  watching her toddle about while giving us the best Gerber baby smiles!

We couldn’t have picked a more perfect, beautiful day for our session!  Living in Laramie, you just never know but on this day it was warm, the sun was golden, the leaves at their peak of beauty, and this little guy couldn’t be happier, toddling about, exploring the great outdoors.  Honestly, I don’t think I have seen a happier grin anywhere!  And really, what did he not have to be happy about?  He was outside, running, jumping, playing with the two people that he loves more than anyone else in the world.  Truly, it’s the simple things!  I had a wonderful time photographing and getting to know this sweet family of three and here is the proof:
