Forex Trading - Maximizing Profit Potential By Properly Sizing Positions

Forex Trading involves high risks, with the potential for substantial losses and is not suitable for all persons. Past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

Most people begin trading by risking one lot (or mini lot) for each trade. Let's assume that the beginner already has learned to plan their entry and exits ahead of time. Regardless of the magnitude of the trade, they will frequently use the same size position for every trade. Therefore, a trade with a 200 pip stop will carry 5 times the risk of a trade that has a 40 pip stop. Therefore, an uncontrolled variable can greatly adjust results. To eliminate this variable, we simply adjust our position size so that every trade carries a similar amount of risk. It is probably best to risk one to three percent of the account balance in order to have a reasonable level or risk on each trade.

Calculating position size is easy. First, take the account balance and multiply it by your predetermined risk level. For our example, let's say that our trade plans to risk three percent of their account on each trade. Let's also suppose that our trader has a $100,000 account balance.

$100,000 x 3% = $3,000

Therefore, our trader will look to risk approximately $3,000 on each trade. Next, we have to calculate the amount of risk per lot for each trade. This can be quickly determined by drawing the value calculator from the entry to the stop. Let's say that our trade utilizes mini lots (10,000 unit lot size) so they are able to precisely risk 3% each time. Let's look at the following example to see how this works in the real world. Example 1 is the trade on the Daily Chart, and example 2 is the trade on the 15min Chart.

On example 1, we see that the distance between the entry and the stop is 230 pips. Therefore, on the EUR/USD the risk per mini lot is $230. Then our trader divides the risk per trade ($3,000) by the risk per mini lot for this particular trade ($230).

$3,000/$230= 13.04

Our trader rounds down to 13 mini lots for this trade. The idea is to get as close to risking 3 percent of the account as possible without going over 3 percent.

On example 2, we see that distance between the entry and the stop is 20 pips. Therefore, on theEUR/USD, the risk per mini lot is $20. Our trader once again divides the risk per trade ($3,000) by the risk per mini lot for this particular trade ($20).

$3000/$20= 150

For this trade, our trader will trade 150 mini lots. It quickly becomes apparent that example 2 requires a much larger position in order to keep each trade weighted equally. Let's take a look at the results. Example 1 was stopped out with a loss of $2990 ($230 risk per mini lot multiplied by 13 mini lots). Example 2 reached the profit target with a gain of $6,450 ($43 profit potential per mini lot multiplied by 150 mini lots). The result is a net gain of $3,460 or 3.46% of the initial account balance (assuming we began with the same account balance for each trade).

If the trader had not properly adjusted position sizes and used 1 standard lot (or 10 mini lots) for each trade, example 1 would have resulted in a 230 pip loss and example 2 would have resulted in a 43 pip gain. The net result would be a loss of $1870 or 1.87% of the initial account balance. The random variable of trade magnitude was not controlled, and a pretty large price would be paid for it. There could also be times where the longer term trade won and the shorter term trade lost, but there is no way to control that variable. Therefore, we eliminate it by adjusting our position size so that each trade carries roughly the same weight.

- Daily Chart - Example 1: Longer term trade that was stopped out.
- 15min Chart - Example 2: Shorter term trade that reached our profit target.

How To Build Backlinks via Google Alerts

Building backlinks is an essential, yet tedious
job for most webmasters. Here are a few tools
and tips to make that job just a little bit easier…

I am a member of many online forums. Most of these
forums have to do with online marketing and site
promotion. Recently, I came across a post on Ken
Evoy’s SBI forum that truly caught my attention.

It basically described how to use Google Alerts
to build your backlinks. Now for those not familiar
with Google Alerts a little explanation is probably
needed.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is a free program run by Google
that allows you to keep track of any topic on
the web. You select your “keywords” or “urls”
and Google will alert you via email whenever
links/content containing your selected topics
appear anywhere on the web.

It is an excellent way to keep informed about
your own domain or name. It is also perfect for
keeping up-to-date on the latest information in
your market niche or niches. It’s also a great
way to find out what other people are saying
about you or your site.

For example: if you have a site on “antique cars”
then you would create a Google Alert for those
keywords. Google will alert you by email whenever
a new link/content related to those keywords
appears on the web.

This is a great way to stay informed in your niche,
but it is also a valuable source of potential
linking partners. Many of those links are blogs
that will allow comments with a link back to your
site.

Google Alerts will probably send you 10-20 links
each day, depending on the popularity of your
chosen keywords. Just go to these blogs/links
and see if you can leave a comment with some
valuable additional information on what’s been
discussed.

Don’t Spam

Please Note: Don’t spam; there are intelligent
people behind most of these blogs, and they will
recognize keyword spam when they see it. Your
main goal should be getting targeted traffic back
to your site and any link PR should be secondary.
Always put the reader or viewer first, especially
if it’s on someone else’s site. Don’t talk about
your site or your marketing - just join the conversation
and add your comments/opinions/suggestions…

Enhance their site and they will reward you with
traffic and a link. But you still have to keep
your own interests in the equation! You have to
make sure you get your targeted keywords in the
anchor text.

Keyword Market

First, if you’ve done your homework, your main
keywords should already be in your domain name
or url. Another way is to add your “keywords” +
“guide” to your sig or signature. Such as:
Name, Your Antique Cars Guide. If you’re an
expert in your particular niche, many webmasters
will kindly welcome your comments and links.

Since your main goal is the traffic, many
webmasters don’t worry if there is a “no follow”
attribute attached to the link. But if you are
concerned about this - one way is to look at
the source code to see if it has the “no follow”
tag. I usually copy the whole source code of
the page to my text editor and then do a simple
“no follow” search.

No Follow

There is also a great little free comment tool
called “Comment Kahuna” co-created by Jason
Potash which will search blogs and tell you if
they have the “no-follow” attribute or not, it
will also give you the PageRank of each blog post.
If you’re going to use blogs as a source of
your backlinks, I suggest you try Comment
Kahuna - it will make the task much easier
and it’s free.

Actually, while the “no-follow” issue may be
a concern for some webmasters, the savvy ones
will realize these are links/sites Google is
actively indexing and spidering, otherwise you
wouldn’t get the alert in the first place. You
must get your links into this whole mix of related,
relevant sites to help raise your own rankings.
Also remember the other search engines may not
even consider the “no-follow” tag.

Trackbacks

Likewise, creating trackbacks are another way
of linking relevant content. Keep in mind, a
trackback is simply an acknowledgement via a
ping signal that is sent from Site A (originator)
to Site B (receptor). Then the receptor often
places a link back to Site A showing its worthiness.

Again, I am mainly concerned with the quality
of the blog or link, rather than the linking
structure. I want the targeted traffic, and it
doesn’t really matter whether the link has
“no follow” because interested visitors only
see a link they can click for other helpful
information.

Other Linking Options

Since we are on the topic of link building,
another useful way to build backlinks is to
use Google Search or Google Blog search. Now
if you’re looking for niche-related blogs just
type in:

“(Keywords)” “powered by (blog scripts)”

For example, if you’re looking for some
“antique cars” related links on WordPress
blog, you would search for:

“antique cars” “powered by wordpress”

And Google would give you a whole list of sites
on antique cars.

Now if you want to find the links that will
allow comments, just repeat the Google search
with:

“antique cars” “powered by wordpress” “leave a comment”
-”no comments”

Remember the “-” means posts that have no
comments will not be displayed.

If you’re concerned with PageRank, Number of Backlinks,
Alexa Ranking… of particular posts you can download
and install the SEOQuake plugin. This handy SEO plugin
can be attached to your browser and will give you helpful
SEO information on the link or links you’re viewing.

Please Note: If you’re using SEOQuake in FireFox you have
the option in Preferences to tick a Line-through “nofollow”
and “noindex” links. Really handy tool to find those “nofollow”
links…

Used in conjunction with Google, it can sort thru all
these blog posts and give you the ones with the highest
PR? Highest traffic? Highest number of backlinks? The
more knowledge you have, the easier and more effective
your link building will become.

Just remember, finding quality backlinks is probably
the most tedious job for most webmasters. It takes
time and it takes patience. By using Google Alerts
you can have relevant keyword related links emailed
to you each day. Use this information to help build
your backlinks in relevant related niches. Do this
consistently over a period of time and your site will
get noticed and ranked higher.

Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) Attacks

The Problem

There are several tools being distributed on compromised computers that allow vandals to remotely control those computers to launch attacks rendering a victim's computers inoperable. The attacks of several prominent Web sites during the week of February 6-12, 2000 used these Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attack tools. The nature of the attack is such that it is very difficult to stop and next to impossible to prevent single-handedly. Some sites have experienced several days of downtime while trying to restore services.

The core problem is the existence of the compromised computers used to create the attack. The computers used in the attacks are compromised several ways including remote attacks on vulnerable, defective software and taking advantage of computers whose owners have loaded remotely controllable software such as remote control trojans and IRC bots. Some reports have put the number of compromised systems in the thousands. Many of the systems are compromised because patches for software defects that were reported and fixed months ago are never installed, because anti-virus tools are not kept up to date, and because the computer owners give away control of their computers by indiscriminately running unknown programs.

Recent studies have indicated these attacks may be widespread and underreported.

The basis of the attack is to overload a victim's computer resources by flooding them with traffic. This is done by commanding multiple compromised systems to send high rates of traffic. In addition, the traffic is often formulated in such a way that it consumes resources at abnormal rates.

Halting an attack is extremely complicated and time consuming for several reasons:

The flood of traffic will likely shut down the victims network making it harder for them to diagnose the problem, collect enough data to determine the sources involved, and communicate effectively. The upstream network provider may fail from the amount of traffic also increasing the isolation.
With some types of attacks, the victim may be able to filter the traffic by its source with a firewall. But there are issues with the number of filters that can be put in place, how long it takes to install the filters, and what happens when the filters block traffic which the organization needs to perform its business. In addition, even with filters, there will be performance degradation because of the processing they require....sometimes to the point of making them ineffective as a defensive tool. If the attack overloads the upstream provider, then filtering is useless.
The victim may see traffic from hundreds or even thousands of computers. The traffic may be coming from compromised computers all over the world. To stop the attack requires tracing each different address back to the network and system from which it originated. Then the responsible organization must be contacted and asked to help shut down and/or clean the offending system. This can obviously be challenging across organizational and national boundaries. The tools allow a vandal to automate attacks times and frequencies so they may come and go before they can be traced.
If being attacked from a hundred different organizations is bad, imagine not knowing which hundred they are. Many of the DDOS tools allow the attacking machines to forge their source address and change them in a random manner. This may make it appear as though the attack is originating from tens of thousands of different computers when it actually may only be ten. This makes it impossible for an organization to single-handedly a) know where the traffic is coming from or b) filter the packets. The attack must be traced step by step from the victim back to the source through all the intermediary ISPs. This requires a large amount of cooperation and technical help from the ISPs who may be in different countries, minimally staffed, and minimally motivated to help. In some attacks, the actual traffic isn't even coming from the attacking computers. Its coming from networks which are configured to allow themselves to be used as traffic amplifiers. In those cases, it is the traffic feeding the remote networks that has forged source addresses. This means the back-tracking must start on someone else's network which increases the complications even more. And again, the attacker may vary the attack time and frequency to harry the victim and avoid capture.
Once the source organizations are identified, the victim must ask them one by one to clean or shutdown a compromised computer. That computer may serve a critical function for the source organization. It may be their email server for example. The source organization may not be staffed on weekends or at night. They may speak a different language. They may not have the authority or desire to help. The staff may be unfamiliar with the attack, system administration, network topology, or any number of things that may delay shutting down the attacking computer. If there are hundreds of computers involved in the attack, a victim can't spend too much time hunting down each one before the recovery efforts are measured in days.

I just find this to be an effective discovery when I decided to use all my basic tools all from one program that provides the basics.
