I want to thank as well congratulate all those people who are associated with the establishment of states' first law university, the Chanakya National Law University, Patna (http://www.chanakyalawuniv.org)

A million thanks!

It’s a matter of pride for the state, because Bihar has marched along with other states in establishing NLU and being the part of revolutionized integrated legal education system in India.

Earlier, I used to doubt whether we could have institutions like IIT, IIM, AIIMS, NLSIU, NIFT and the likes that could prevent the migration of vast pool of talent out of the state. But now I am sure that the future holds bright opportunities for thousands of aspirants.

This year itself two more NLUs have been established. They are:

Quota's for OBCs in Central Universities, IITs, IIMs: Is it Fair?

The proposal of UPA Governments' HRD minister Arjun Singh to increase reservations from the present 22.5 per cent to 49.5 per cent in prestigious educational institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Management, Central Universities and other institutes of national repute, is catching up a storm across the country.

This is certainly not fair to keep reservation in educational institutes. No doubt, tomorrow the government can come up with a policy of reservation in private sector. I don't know exactly, what the standard of higher education in India on international scenario is, but politics play an important (spoilsport) role in state of Indian educational affairs.

There are several other ways to help the 'meritorious' students from downtrodden sections of society, viz. scholarships, free preparatory classes, rebate in tuition fees, facility of bank loan etc. In fact there is only one class of students, ‘economically backward students’ (irrespective of belongings to the caste i.e., forward or backward), who should be given the above privilege not the SCs, STs or OBCs.

And this is the humble request to the educational authority (the so called government- central as well as state): please do not waste others' time, money, effort and energy in simply politicizing (if I am not wrong) the education system of India (i.e. reservations, minority status to institutions etc) and instead concentrate on improving the quality of education.

The IIM, Bangalore controversy!

The controversy created by HRD ministry over opening up of IIM, Bangalore's branch in Singapore, again shows how politics play spoilsport in the academics. On the other hand the counterparts abroad are giving autonomy to their institutions of national repute and making them more successful in all evenues. Earlier it was Murli Manohar Joshi, now it is Arjun Singh.

By opening a branch in Singapore, IIM Bangalore will not only get financial aid but also the exposure at international level for Indian institutions. It can also cater to the needs of the wards of 9% population of Singaporeans which are Indians. The BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan is one such example which has opened its campus in Knowledge Village, Dubai apart from one in Goa.

Our institutions despite being research and education oriented are pressurized to think about the political, bureaucratic obligations. If any institute is financially independent, it should be given a chance to have tie-ups with other world class institutions and offshore study campuses for their research activities. They should be given full autonomy.

On the other side these institutions are unable to fulfill the internal demand-supply chain. Only 1% of the CAT aspirants get through IIMs. The need of the hour is to either increase the intake of seats or increase the number of IIMs or say to open an IIM in each state. (As in the case of National Law School, Bangalore, after the need was felt such seven law schools were opened in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Raipur, Gandhinagar and Kochi. One more at Lucknow is under consideration.)

Change in the admission pattern of IIT-JEE!

The drastic change in the IIT-JEE is right from one point of view. Thousands of student reappear and draw their two-three- even four years for writing the highly coveted Joint Entrance Examination only to find themselves with frustration, sever tension and lack of confidence (these persons otherwise after entering other fields viz. fashion design, law journalism, food technology, hotel management, pure sciences, defense etc would have done extremely well.)
If not selected after two attempts, they can concentrate on other things. These criteria (which if brought into action) will allow students to drop only one academic year. At the end of one year if not selected they can think of other equally available avenues in career. One plus point is that parents from rural parts of India have not to worry anymore about the high fees charged by 'private coaching institutions' for IIT preparation.
On the other hand the students from rural areas will be highly affected, because normally they start preparation after the completion of plus two. Many deserving and talented students will be deprived of their chances of getting into IITs.
The matter should first be discussed among students, educationists, faculties, ex-IITians and parents before coming to a final conclusion.
Let’s hope for the betterment of student community.

District Rural Education Development Society (in short DREDS) is functioning towards the social and educational betterment of rural community. It is presently functioning at small level from Gopalganj district of Bihar. The vision of the society for the future is as follows:

# To run a non-profitable CBSE/ICSE affiliated senior secondary school (in all the rural districts) in a way to cope up with the needs of time and to provide students the best of the school education. The level of studies in these schools will be at par with those of public schools/central schools. No longer the students will feel the need of migrating to other cities/states for coaching classes. The students will be right enough & capable to compete in IITs, Medical, NDA, Law, NIFT & other competitive examination right after their schooling. It will provide free education to all deserving students from underprivileged community and downtrodden sections of society.

# To run a women polytechnic for training women technically/professionally in a way to make them financially independent. Particularly it will help them in their hard times because our society is men dominated and more often women are the victims.

# To run a public library, to cater the needs of all students and book lovers, who otherwise are unable to purchase books or avail the facility of library, within the district territory in which the library is located.

# To open a youth & old aged club. The youth club will act multipurposly from helping the rural people in natural disaster to educate them on AIDS/latest agriculture techniques/ human rights etc and to organize Educational/Psychological counseling session twice a year for students from all over the district. The old aged club will function as a intellectual get together, as all the retired & old age people will share their experiences and come up with an idea about diverse range of topics.

Tsunami - the effect and rehabilitation!

The biggest ever-natural calamity in last fourty years, the Tsunami hit the southeast and southern coast of India on the fateful 26th December 2004. A major earthquake(9.0 at ritcher scale) near Banda Aceh province off Sumatra coast in Indonesia followed by a tsunami [a Japanese word (tsu + nami), meaning tidal wave] claimed more than 1,50,000 lives in South and South-East Asia, and was responsible for displacing hundreds of thousands of people in the in the region.

This national disaster is a result of nature's internal disorder. Now all the NGO's, self help groups, whole heartedly individuals (apart from central and various state governments) should come forward to donate generously in order to provide relief, rehabilitation and to reestablish & bring the things to normal. Many helping hands are donating generously for the rehabilitation of tsunami heat areas, but it will not be sufficient for overcoming from the tragedy and psychological fear the people are going through. India should join hands in the global warming system as to prevent such incidents at huge scale in future.
May God help all those grievous victims and confer peace to the deceased!
It is a request to all those who by means of anything can donate generously towards tsunami-affected people.

Integrated Legal Education in India!

Legal education should aim at promoting ‘Justice’ rather than just resolve disputes & improve relationship. The study of law in order to be meaningful has to be in context of social realities.

In the era of specialization it is fruitful to concentrate on a career right after twelfth and the five-year course provides ample time to build a sound background in the subject and develop professionalism. The period of five year is sufficient for a law school to equip their students with professional-skills as per the market (social) demands.

The five-year law course was introduced in 1984 to attract brilliant students into the stream of legal studies. Bar Council of India, with the support of Govt. of Karnataka, started the National Law School Of India University, at Bangalore in 1987 as center of excellence. The idea of Bar Council of India was to make the study of law as prestigious and attractive as technological and management studies in the IITs & IIMs, which are India’s premier institutes.

Originally, Bar Council of India thought of having one National Law University for the whole country as a model, later the idea got greater acceptance among educationists & administrators to have at least one such National Law University in every state.

The admission process to these law schools/universities is almost same and based on a national level entrance test comprising of the following subjects. –

(a) General Knowledge, (b) General English, (c) Legal Aptitude, (d) Reasoning, (e) Essay & (f) Elementary science

It is not a hidden fact that, Bihar is among the few states whose share in production of National Human power is high. But no one of them actually wants to contribute to the state. Migration is at the maximum it can be. Its all due to the system (educational/political).

We are the only large state in India which has no college/university/institute with the "A" grade certification of NAAC [National Accreditation and Assessment Council] of UGC.

How shameful is it to hear? Nearly 25% of the primary school teachers are found absent from schools. All colleges (intermediate & degree, except some in the big towns) are either yet to be provided with faculties/facilities/equipments/funds/books for libraries etc. There are laboratories in the intermediate colleges (I can not comment on the degree colleges as they are in the hands of the different affiliated universities) but neither the student is familiar with the practical classes nor they are motivated to attend a very-very few theoretical classes.

The situation is such that students have to depend upon private tuitions/coaching institutions largely run by the govt. teachers/ lecturers/ unemployed youths. You can realise the condition of a poor student who can only rely upon the hot "guess papers" available just before intermediate examination. At least the teachers of Govt. plus-two/inter colleges should do their "duties". My request is to the Secretary of Bihar Intermediate Education Council [BIEC]. He must ensure that all the schools/colleges under BIEC are implementing the strict education pattern/teaching hour/practical classes/attendance/other extra curricular activities etc. as required at plus two level. This complaint may go very long, but the point is that the students should not be left behind in the current education pattern.

The Career
Processed and preserved foodstuffs have been among the most remarkable catalysts for bringing about change in the food habits of a substantially large urban population. From eating merely for subsistence, people now show preference for supplementing their diet with value-added foodstuffs. Increase in consumption of processed foods is noticeable across various categories of the population and the trend of 'eating out' has grown manifold. With these trends the market for processed food is growing significantly and it is expected that the food industry should grow rapidly and cross the two hundred thousand crore mark by the turn of the century.

The domestic industry has been largely handled by the disorganized sector in the past. However, with growth on the anvil, investment and restructuring is required in processing, retailing and for setting up cooperatives as well as for streamlining the agricultural inputs sector to enhance the growth of this industry. Food production, procurement, processing, distribution networks and retailing are attracting large integrated players into the field. With the open market policies of the government, this industry has attracted multinational participation. This industry should offer tremendous opportunities to qualified food technologists and entrepreneurs.

The Nature of Job

Food Technology is the study of sciences related to food processing, which involves preservation of fruits, sea food, meats, cooked foods, vegetables, juices and beverages and also the manufacture of confectionary, snacks, foodstuffs and packaging.
The tasks: Research for devising new and improved food processing techniques. Guiding the processing, conservation and preservation of foodstuffs. Creating new foodstuffs generated from plant and animal life. Improving existing techniques for economizing, processing, adding value, creating new tastes for providing impetus to marketing and consumption of processed foodstuffs. Evolving measures such as infestation control, fungicidal treatment and insecticidal storage to protect foods from spoiling and damage. Examining foodstuffs for contamination, adulteration, food value, etc. by biochemical and nutrition tests and quality control measures. Developing new methods and processes for recovering useful and utilizable by products from industrial and domestic wastes of foodstuffs.

Who should pursue it?

If you have analytical mind, keen observation, interest in chemistry and foodstuffs, you will find this field interesting. Interest in flavors, tastes, healthy foods and marketing will be of value.

Where will it take you?

Food technologists work in industries manufacturing mostly all kinds of foodstuff. They work for quality control in the manufacturing sector, supervising the production process. The manufacturing industries use their expertise in monitoring the storage, processing, hygiene, temperatures and experimenting for making new preparations.

Food technologists also work in hotels, hospitals, packaging industries, distilleries, soft drink factories, spices, cereals and rice mills.

Study Routes

Students after Class XII (PCB/ mathematics/agriculture) can pursue graduation in Food Technology.

Graduation in Food technology, chemical technology/chemistry, agricultural sciences, dairy technology/dairy sciences, can be followed by postgraduate in the subject.

This refers to all those young/intellectual persons of the great land of Bihar who are doing well in all areas.

My request to all of them is that, instead of making comment on the present political scenario & criticising over the education system in Bihar, you all must follow the slogan -"Each one, Teach one". The point is if you are really eager to do something for the people of Bihar, you can do it by means of providing education to a student. It doesn't imply that you need to be very rich or very educated person. If you can provide basic education to a deserving child then it is very good, but if you can't then at least you can motivate them / counsel them / guide them / give them moral support / make them realise the importance of education. And when education will prevail in the state then no longer you will feel the need to criticise on the political scenario & the education system. The day when you will apply the slogan on yourself, you will feel a great satisfaction.
