This video shows just aggressive and precise his driving technique is no matter where in the world he is or what car he jumps in to.

Keep in mind that this was a brand new car for him - a Lexus packing a whopping 1200hp 2JZ engine but he handled it like it his daily driver.

Really looking forward to the coming rounds as I predict he'll be on the hunt for the 1st place trophy.

Watch out Pawlak, Gitten and Millen. Daigo has arrived.
Long time no write! Disco Stu here with some dates and info about Drift Matsuri and G1 competitions for this year, 2012.

G1 News!

In 2012, they're going to be running the G1 competition in two separate classes- Super Class and Regular Class.

Super Class entrants are those drivers who have previously won G1 rounds or a series.

Current Super Class drivers are as follows:

1. Christian Pickering (SC), Australia, RPS13 (2011 champion)
2. Chris Dejager (SC), Australia, R32 (2010 champion)
3. Andrew Gray, (SC), Scotland, JZX90 (round winner)

With the pro drivers in the Super Class, it makes it a lot fairer for amateur drivers to get a shot at winning a round and proving your worthiness to move up and compete in Super Class.

The one I bought this time is a Drift HD170 Stealth action camera.

I just wanted to do a quick review of this camera because these types of action cameras are awesome for filming your drifting and if you're in the market to buy and action camera to record your drifting activity, then this review might give you some pointers if you ever decide to buy one.

No doubt you've probably already heard of GoPro cameras and perhaps Contour. Just about all action cameras you can buy now are quite good, but I like Drift Innovation's cameras because of all the features they come with and they're dead-easy to use.

Some people think the Drift Innovation cameras like the HD170 Stealth are a little bulky, but that doesn't matter to me as I'm going to use it mainly to stick on cars and film drifting.

If I was strapping it to my head it may be a different story. If I wanted to use it on my head when I go snowboarding, I might want to get the new Drift HD camera from the same maker which is 25% smaller.

Anyway, let's get on with the review of the Drift HD170 Stealth!

Drift HD170 Stealth Video Specs

HD video (1080p in 25/30fps, 720p in 25/30/50 or 60 fps)

With the 60 frames per second option I can slow the video right down when I play it back and make my videos. This is a must if you want slow motion in your videos.

1.5" Color LCD screen

I love this feature because I can watch replays of my videos on the spot right after I film them. It's also useful for lining up the shot when I mount it on the car. You don't need to 'guess' where the camera is pointing with this screen. There is a built-in speaker too so your mini videos come with sound.

Rotating lens

This is another awesome feature that GoPro cameras are yet to grasp. Contour now does it with their latest cameras but this has been a standard for Drift Innovation cameras. You can rotate the nose of the camera where the lens is a massive 300 degrees. So if your shot is perfectly horizontal when you mount the camera, just a quick turn of the lens to adjust it and you're ready to rock.

Wide angle

Most decent action cameras come with a 170 degrees wide-angle lens as does the Drift Stealth. However in 1080p mode, you only get 127 degrees, but I can live with that. Most of the time I think I'll be using it in 720p mode to get more out of the SD memory card. Youtube and Facebook video won't play 1080p anyway (although I hear rumors that Youtube may start supporting 1080p soon).

Wire-less Remote

The Drift Stealth comes with a nifty wireless remote control to turn recording on and off. It uses a radio frequency and is good for up to 5 meters. This is awesome if I'm strapped in in my car, I don't have to get in and out just to turn the damn thing on and off. My old X170 had a remote too but I never really tested to see if it works through metal or glass or not.. but I know it works when there is nothing in between you and the camera.

Other Cool Random Features...

The battery is a re-chargeable 3.7V 1110mAh Lithium-Ion battery which lasts about 2.5 hours in hot weather. A little shorter in cold weather. There is an option to buy a more powerful battery if you need it. Recharging is done via USB cable or an optional AC power adapter.

You get 32MB of memory built in which won't store much of anything but it can take up to a 32GB SD card. Not sure how many hours of footage would take up 32GB but it would be a fair bit. I think from memory, at Full HD (1080p) you get about 30 minutes for every 1GB.

HDTV output - Yeah, just HDTV not HDMI output like some cameras have now but that's fine. HD will still be good enough quality for a laugh watching back on my telly at home.

Comes with a 1 year manufacturer warranty but I'm guessing it only covers technical failure, not damage and breakages that happen when sandwiched between two drift cars or a drop on to the bitumen at 100kp/h plus. But it's always good to know if for some reason it stops working you can get it replaced. However, I had no problems with my other X170 Drift camera which I had for just over a year.

On the bottom of the camera, there's a threaded screw mount which is necessary if you want to use a suction mount or tripod. It doesn't come with a suction mount, but it does come with a whole bunch of mounts right out of the box, such as helmet clip, handle-bar mount, goggle strap mount and a thick elastic strap which you might use to bind your passengers up with when you blast around the track?!

Overall

I really can't see any downsides to this camera besides the brick-like design and slightly bulky size, which for me is not a big issue.

It's got everything I need to have fun recording me and my mates sliding at the drift track without any headaches.

For a camera with HD video, remote, color screen, rotating wide lens, rechargeable battery, suction mount ready you can't go past the Drift HD170 stealth.. and I forgot to mention it does 5megapixel still photos and 'photoburst' sequence shots too if you ever are in the mood for it.

If you're interested in buying a Drift HD170 Stealth for yourself too, you can get one from my favorite online Action Camera store (USA and Canada customers)

If you're an Aussie, check out this Australian online retailer.

Free shipping is included from both online stores.

Maybe ask Santa for one if you've been a good boy (or girl) this year ;)

Thanks for checking out my review of the Drift HD170 Stealth action camera from Drift Innovation.

If I ever need to buy another action camera in the future, I'll probably review that one too. These things are just too cool. Can't wait to get out and start making videos.
p.s. I plan to be shooting a lot more onboard drift video with this new camera. My old X170 was ok but it wasn't HD so the quality was a very average. This new HD model one is going to be much better so watch out for videos coming soon!

After the comp, they had free practice so here's a little bit of video that I snapped...
The sun was going down on a great afternoon... and these boys were drifting in 5 car trains like it was nothing. Just another lazy Sunday afternoon at Ebisu.

I mean.. who doesn't love to see drift carnage.. or even better.. carnage at Ebisu circuit?

Ebisu Circuit : RUN THE WALL from Luke Huxham on Vimeo.

Seems like Ebisu was made for wall scrapes..

which is just one of the reasons it's known a "drift heaven"..

and why Drift Matsuri week is known as "drift heaven week".

TIP: don't be bringing your D1 spec show car to drift matsuri.. Or it will end up looking like this:

Mike's Red Bull FD Rx-7 'Madbull' is now in it's 5th generation.

Still keeping the Naturally Aspirated 26B 4 rotor engine, but it now is equipped with a tube chassis front and rear.

Here is a recent video of it in a shakedown session:

The car is now all ready to be sent to good old Australia where he'll be competing in the Tectaloy Drift Challenge that's running in conjunction with the World Time Attck in Eastern Creek raceway in Sydney on 5 and 6th of August 2011.

Nicely done Mike and good luck in the competitions!

Would love to see it in the flesh too to hear the 10,000 rpm and beyond scream from the 4 rotor. Maybe a special appearance at a D1 Japan round is on the cards?

Kumakubo came out victorious when he beat the other mega horsepower 4-door driver in the final, Daigo Saito.

It was Kumakubo's first win in his new 1000ps Laurel.

Since he debuted in the big RB26 powered Orange beast this year, his results have been getting better and better.

Let's hope he can continue the streak for the D1 double-header in Ebisu on August 6th, 7th.
Here are two 'up close and personal' interview videos from two Team Orange members.

The first is with the "Queen of drift" Sumika Kubokawa, and the second with quick-hands Naoto Suenaga.

Enjoy!

Thanks Team Orange! You guys rock!!

Cool trivia: I, Disco Stu, was actually the man behind the questions for these interviews!

Luke begged me on his hands and knees to lash out my Japanese skills to do the interviews.

Videos were shot in the front display room at Kumakubo's K-Style garage in Nihonmatsu city Fukushima. That's why there's a lot of Team Orange merchandise in the background.

Wish we could have done an interview with Kuma too... Maybe soon!? Fingers crossed.
NOT when they're upside down going 100km/h down the freeway after coming off a trailer.

Instant missile!

Poor guy though.. So sad to see cars like this go to waste.

Drift fans, take care and save the drifting for the track!

This one is of an amateur drift meeting at Kunitomi Kart Land.

This small course looks really fun! Like a touge course but no ups and downs.

Song is: The qemists stompbox (spor remix), if anyone is wondering.

All in all, a pretty cool mix tape if you ask me.

Battle of the RB20s.. Stewy Bryant follows me (Disco Stu) down the hill at Ebisu West drift course.

15 drivers might not seem like a lot, but after North Japan and Ebisu
circuit suffered huge damage both physically and rumor-wise from the
Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear disaster, everyone was wondering if G1
and drift matsuri would go ahead and if any foreigners would show up for
them at all!

G1GP car line up... See the Cefiro.. or what's left of it?

Suffice to say, G1 went ahead as scheduled and 15 brave and dedicated drivers showed up - so thank you to all those drivers who made the effort to come!

Two Thumbs Up From The Day's Winner - Chris DeJager! Congrats!

The final battle saw Chris DeJager in his half a R32 with RB25DET go against Stewy Bryant in his mint and near stock C33 Laurel.

Chris walked away with the win after Stewy spun on the second run. This was Chris' second consecutive win at G1GP. He won last year's Autumn G1GP round on the same Ebisu Nishi course.

Thanks again for all the drivers who participated, PowerVehicles.com and to Team Orange and Ebisu circuit staff for putting on another memorable G1GP!

See you all for the Summer G1GP!

Luke is right into drifting and his talents not only lie behind the wheel. His amazing film and video skills really express his love for the sport and drift community.

Since the Japan tragedy in March 2011, Luke has been hard at work putting the first 2 episodes together and using the slogan "Ganbappenai! Tohoku"... which means "Hang in there, North East Japan!"

Here are the videos..

Episode 1 - Suenaga Naoto takes us around the courses at Ebisu circuit.

DriftColors.com : Episode 1 - Ebisu Circuit Course Introduction from Luke Huxham on Vimeo.

Episode 2 - We talk to the drivers at Ebisu (Japanese and foreigners)

DriftColors.com : Episode 2 - Ebisu Circuit Meet The Drivers Part 1 from Luke Huxham on Vimeo.

In Episode 2 you might recognize a familiar face/car... ME - Disco Stu and my trusty Cefiro when it was in pristine condition!

That footage was taken about 18 months ago (Fall Matsuri 2009)... I think I've matured a little since then... I hope anyway.. and my Cefiro doesn't look anywhere near as clean and straight as that any more!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the videos and look out for more upcoming episodes on DriftColors.com.

Oh, and if you're wondering, Ebisu circuit is has re-opened after the earthquake and is safe from radiation... but most importantly, drift matsuri is on this weekend (April 30/May 1), starting with the first round of G1GP for 2011 tomorrow!

"Hang in there Touhoku!!"

You would have seen the news of the Tsunami which flattened the north-east coastline of Japan in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

Soon after the tsunami hit, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant started overheating which fueled fears of a meltdown, and at this time, is still in critical condition.

So how did this all affect Ebisu circuit?

Thanks to Kuma and his blog, we're able to see some of the damage done to the tracks at Ebisu from the EARTHQUAKE!!

Driftland.. just a few more cracks.. probably won't even notice!

School course pits!! wow!

The cliff perched garages.. ouch! That's Kuma's first WRX that he sold to the italian drifter Federico Sceriffo.

Andy from PowerVehicles.com also mentioned their garages where they work from and store their $$$ cars was badly damaged too, but luckily his D1SL spec JZX100 only got minor damage.

It's a big shock to see the beloved Ebisu circuit receive so much damage, but the crew there have been hard at work and re-opened today after a 2-week closure.

Kumakubo really has a heart like a lion though. According to his blog, he has been providing shelter, food and water to those who lost their homes or had to evacuate due to the disasters.

Also, some folks have been wondering if drift matsuri will still be on at the end of April.

At this time, it is still going ahead. No news of cancellation. The only concern is the gasoline shortage that the whole of east Japan is suffering from.

If gasoline tankers can't start moving soon, there won't be enough hi-oku for the 200+ cars that attend matsuri - the next one coming on April 29th.

But, my inside source says that gas delivery should be back on track by the end of this month, so it seems there will be gasoline, but will there be enough for the gas guzzling drift machines! Let's hope so.

"The Drift Muscle" is the name of the new Drift league Keiichi Tsuchiya and Daijiro Inada are starting up here in Japan.

If you didn't know already, Tsuchiya and Dai-chan founded D1GP back in the day but split from D1 after some disagreements with the management at the end of last year.

The split left us D1 drift fans wondering what would happen to drifting in Japan. There were rumors that the pair would start their own "rival" league but there was little word as to when or what kind of league it would be.

But now it's official... "The Drift Muscle" league is starting up this year in 2011!

(kind of a weird name huh? but what else do you expect from Japan...)

And here is what the schedule for it's debut year is going to look like:

Round 1: 8th May, Nihonkai Maze Circuit
Round 2: 6th June, Bihoku Highland CIrcuit
Round 3: 17th July, Nikko Circuit
Round 4: 10th October, Suzuka Twin Circuit
Round 5: 3rd November, Sportsland Sugo West Course

Wait a minute... no Drift Muscle in Ebisu?

Yeah a little disappointing... I'm not sure as to why but it might be something to do with the lads from Team Orange's association with D1 and certain sponsors.

Anyway it's a shame - but we still get D1 at Ebisu and Team Orange is looking good with Kuma's 1000HP RB26 Laurel progressing nicely. (update about that coming soon)

So what's "The Drift Muscle" all about?

From what I've heard, there are going to be two classes. The "Muscle" class for middle and "Super Muscle" class for the experts.

Drivers are placed in there classes according to their skill level, not their car's horsepower level - the only way it should be IMO.

Keiichi (Dorikin) said on his site that “It’s begun for the sake of all lovers of drifting”. Info about regulations and entry into the comps should be appearing on that site "in a couple of days".

With the addition of Drift Muscle,we now can enjoy a new flavor of drifting in Japan. Can't wait to see the action from those circuits - especially Sugo's west (go-kart) course!

This is a brilliant video made by Hann of the Insane Drifters crew from Melbourne Australia. He captured this footage of his Japan/Drift Matsuri trip last year.

It just goes to show how much beatiful scenery and culture Japan has to offer. And of course, the awesomeness of drifting and motorsport here. Brings a tear to my eye...

Yep, those poor white zebras don't get any rest from the noise, smoke and fumes..

So who on earth would go to Ebisu in the middle of winter when it's under 3 feet of snow?

Answer: Anyone who wants to drift on the snow of course!

All you need are some studded tires (studless snow tires being the second choice) and some balls about you and you can go nuts on the Touge course like these guys!

Forget the need for 500hp! Snow gives you an extra 900hp at the wheels so any old NA beater is enough.. even if it's running on 3 cylinders.

In this video, it's actually the guys from Team Orange (Kumakubo and Suenaga) driving so they make it look easier than it is.

That reminds me.. I've got to get some snow tires for my Cefiro so I can try it too. Looks like awesome fun.. and you get a natural snow barrier around the course to stop you sliding off the edge!
