This gigantic number is larger than the populations of prominent countries such as France or the United Kingdom. Sadly, this figure also represents the great number of creatures who lose their lives to animal testing each year. This cruel practice is grossly outdated, and I believe that it should be discontinued. Not only is animal experimentation extremely unreliable, the whole process is wasteful and inhumane.

If the weather channel was only accurate about ten-percent of the time, would you continue to rely on it? Most people would find a new method of gathering information about the weather, so why can we not implement the same ideology when it comes to animal testing? At only a six-percent accuracy rate, experimentation on animals is not the most useful way in pioneering new inventions in cosmetics, medicine, or cleaning products. Not only does the inaccuracy of animal testing waste time, human lives could be threatened by the errors. For example, Aspirin caused thousands of animals to have negative reactions. Yet, this drug can be found in almost everyone’s home because of the beneficial effect it has on humans. These discrepancies can be explained by the great differences in an animal’s and a human’s cellular, anatomic, and metabolic makeup. A greater success rate could easily be found by using test subjects with human like qualities. Using human test subjects and cadavers is always an option, however new advancements in technology would eliminate the need for either of these methods. Scientists have begun to test cell based research in terms of determining if drugs are safe for human use, and the results have been extremely successful.

A byproduct of animal testing’s unreliability is the vast amount of waste generated. Running experiments on animals is greatly more expensive than testing using alternate methods, such as stem-cell testing. The National Institute of Health spent fourteen billion dollars on animal testing alone last year. With such a low success rate, animal testing is basically burning through the taxpayers’ money with little to no results. A commonality among humankind is that our time on earth is not infinite. If scientists are spending their time and energy working on a project that only has a ninety-four-percent chance of an accurate result, then humanity is being greatly cheated out of a wealth of scientific genius. In this way, animal testing is greatly limiting mankind’s ability to grow and thrive. In conclusion, animal testing is wasting the lives of animals and humans alike. Many research experiments are not well thought out, contain flaws, or fail. When scientists are using animals in these tests where nothing is accomplished, that creature’s life has been wasted. Human lives are also at stake. As previously mentioned, animal testing’s inaccuracy leads for unsafe drugs to be sold. In the 1950s, a sleeping drug went on the market that gave over ten million babies birth defects. Even in today’s world where a tragedy of that scale probably would not occur, someone must be the first human to try something. The waste of money, time, knowledge, and lives greatly outweighs the benefits of animal testing.

“The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are always cruel.” -Proverbs 12:10. Christianity, along with Hinduism and Buddhism advocates for the fair and humane treatment of animals. These beliefs challenge the morals and ethics animal testing employs. The wellbeing of one life cannot be superseded by the potential benefits given to anyone else. When scientists make the decision to experiment on animals, they are declaring their lives as more important than that of the creature. It is important to remember that animals are living creatures with thoughts, feelings, and emotions, and we have no right to establish ourselves as more valuable than them.

Animal experimentation is painful. In some cases, animals must go without food and water, are force fed, held in cramped cages, purposefully injured, and even killed all because scientists want to make life easier for humans. In some cases, the product tested is not even necessary for human existence; Rabbits have their eyes held open for days when a new mascara is being tested on them. Why continue to inflict pain on helpless creatures when there are painless and more effective alternatives?

Many people have adopted a “better them than me” policy when it comes to animal testing. I will admit that I, too, believed in testing products on animals if human lives could be saved and animals were not seriously harmed. However, after being exposed to how little animal testing accomplishes and the atrocious methods used when experimenting, I now believe that alternate methods, such as in vitro testing, benefit both humans and animals. Animal testing is not only unreliable and wasteful; it is grossly inhumane. The outdatedness of animal experimentation, not just in terms of science but in the ethics surrounding the concept, should be sufficient reason to move forward in science for a more positive future for all creatures on Earth. Imagine having your beloved pet be subjected to extreme pain and torture. Although this is a disturbing thought, many animals will spend their whole lives in this terrible situation. It is imperative for all human beings to bond together to insure a better future for animals and mankind alike.

zandraart:peafowl doodle
