Drawing Cars on Newsprint Paper continues with another sketch session. If you didn’t catch the last video, check out the previous newsprint sketch video. This time around, I’ll be sketching with a sort of “dry” marker. What’s a dry marker? Dry markers have just a little bit of juice left in them to help give you some varying line weight.

It will allow you to lay done some lines “lightly” so it doesn’t look like it’s “in your face” so to speak. Another thing you can do with dry markers is to use it to setup your construction lines before you commit to the page.

Again..this is sketched out in a larger newsprint pad.

Getting such practice exercises in larger format will be crucial to developing your drawing skills.

So sit back and watch the video. If there is something in particular you would like me to sketch, let me know.

You asked for it…and you got it! We are kicking off the Drawing Fundamentals videos this week to help you understand more of the “why” certain techniques in drawing can be executed due to fundamentals. This week we will be focusing on understanding the radius. It sounds simple enough and it basically is. However drawing complicated forms starts from understanding the most simplistic forms. This video sketch will focus on a simple cube and how to draw a radius on a cube.

Bear in mind that such simplistic drawings also need to be practiced so you have to take action and find a way to make time to practice these CORE fundamentals in drawing.

Last time, I had completed a 370Z sketch. This time around we’re going to create a quick marker rendering. These “quick” renderings are known as marker tests. The objective is to test out the various hues to understand which colors work or don’t work.

The other thing you may want to consider is making a photocopy of your drawing so you can experiment with using markers. Later on I’ll be creating a “tighter” rendering

Japanese aesthetics are quite a bit different from all the other brands. They have a sort of sophistication and sharpness about their design that reflect a sort of “samurai-isc” aesthetic. I am often reminded of samurai swords when I see their character lines in certain cars.

The Nissan 370Z has evolved quite a bit from it’s previous years with significant changes to the front fascia, headlamps, and pillars. Now more in line with the Nissan GTR aesthetic, Nissan continues to refine their design language in the sports car arena.

Without further delay…check out the video below for the sketch. Enjoy!

2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe Car Designer Marker Rendering

A couple of weeks ago I had sketched 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe. Many of you have been asking me whether I could start creating some marker rendering demos. So I decided to oblige!

So here are some quick techniques that you can use to add a little bit of color to your drawing by just using a range of grey scale markers.

BMW’s have been doing a great job on their exterior styling. If you look at the evolution of the bimmers you will notice how aggressive they have gotten with their styling. For instance, the passive headlamps from E21 to E90, BMW has made remarkable evolutionary changes while maintaining positive brand identity.(with some few exceptions along the way)

Creating the 4 series designer sketch was a fun exercise. The crisp taught lines and aggressive character line creases along the side bring a lot of attention to its gorgeous surfacing. Not to mention there is a sort of brutal gracefulness about it’s design language. The tires are large only enhancing its solid stance and “stage” presence!

Without further delay…check out the video below for the sketch. Enjoy!

Drawing Cars on Newsprint Paper continues with another sketch session. If you didn’t catch the last video, check out the previous newsprint sketch video. We’ll continue this demo with an indigo blue art stix. Art stix are of the same grade as prismacolor pencils. Gives you an excellent value range and allows you shade in large areas with the broad side of the art stix.

The trick with art stix is to continuously rotate the art stix to maintain a sharp point. You’ll need to use the broad side of the art stix to shade large areas. It can get a little tricky because you must still be mindful of line weight just as you would be with a pencil.

Getting such practice exercises in larger format will be crucial to developing your drawing skills.

So sit back and watch the video. If there is something in particular you would like me to sketch, let me know.

Here’s the 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe Car Designer Sketch! Why did I create this sketch? Cuz I can! I took a look at the new 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe Concept that was showcased back in January’s Detroit Autoshow and was stunned. I don’t know what it is about BMW and other European Cars like Audi that makes them so damn sexy, (just kidding…I actually do know what makes them look so hot) but this was a must draw as far as practice goes.

Most who visit this blog, love to learn about design related subjects, particularly in the automotive industry. Most of the time we discover sketching techniques and style execution along with fundamentals in design application.

However, it’s also important to get out there and see some of these super cars in real life and just appreciate their beauty. On April 20, I had the privilege of visiting one of Michigan’s most renowned automobile collectors, Ken and his wife, Kristen, Lingenfelter. Actually…they may be one of the very few in the country that have a collection so large, it would most likely turn Jay Leno’s chin in their friendly direction!

The Lingenfelter Collection, is quite a sight to behold. Though I was always curious about Jay Leno’s collection, I felt just fine being surrounded by classic Corvettes, Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s, Porsches, Muscle Cars, you name it! There are some seriously impressive vehicles under one roof. The Lingenfelter’s hosted this Open House event with proceeds going to charity. I was lucky enough to receive a nice poster for my donation and it was well worth donating to the Women’s Breast Cancer Foundation, to see some classic Corvettes and Corvette mods!

The Lingenfelters collection comprises of roughly 30% exotics, 30% muscle, and 40% corvettes. ( I think he is a Vette fan…but not sure )

Now just a quick background about Ken. Ken, the son of a General Motors Executive, has had a passion for cars at a young age. A successful real estate businessman, Ken secured his first Corvette in 1977. After selling his company, he embarked on assembling a collection of many different cars from around the world. In 2008, Ken purchased the assets of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, a company previously founded by his cousin, John Lingenfelter.

The Lingenfelter Performance Engineering team has been instrumental in developing a new range of vehicles by modifying existing OEM cars and enhancing their handling, control, and speed over and above their baseline performance.

I had the pleasure of conversing with his wife, Kristen. Kristen is also an entrepreneur that handles all the racing gear and apparel for the company. What is even more striking in this entire experience was their attitude. The Lingenfelters were extremely down to earth and personable people. I thought I was friendly…but man…if I owned these cars, I think I would have barricaded them off…or put life size posters of the cars in its place….just sayin.

Whatever it is, I have to give respect to a family that is willing to let the general public have a wonderful time and enjoy these exotics…and if anything …make them feel like a million bucks at the end of the day. Now that is good karma!

In anycase check out the photos and prepare to be in awe!

How to Draw Cars with Sections

Drawing cool cars from memory means you have to take a pragmatic approach to drawing. One of the tips in the automotive design industry to is to define your shapes using sections so I am going to show you how to draw cars with sections.

So what are sections? Sections are “slices” of the vehicle body that describe the shape of the vehicle. If you have a sphere, the section describing the shape would be a circle.

So the challenge is to develop a series of sections that will help you to build the forms of your vehicle illustration. Check out the video below to see how sections can help you to perfect your drawing skills.

Drawing an Audi TT Sports Coupe

Though the American OEMS have been improving in the recent years, especially GM with their stunning Cadillac line, other luxury brands seem to be on top of their game too.

Let’s look at Audi.

Audi has been pushing the boundaries of design ever since they released their “Bauhaus on Wheels”, the TT back in 2000 after its original inception in 1995. Their architectural approach was fresh, innovative and gave the world something they had never seen….especially with its accurate translation into production. The Audi TT has gone through a study evolutionary design process and has evolved from their basic architectural shape to more aggressive styling.

Just notice how the front headlamps have change for instance. Back in 2000 the headlamps looked passive but fit the form language. Now the headlamps are quite aggressive.

What I have found lately with Audi’s exteriors is their refined chiseled and harmonious styling that leads your eye through each surface transition leaving you begging for more. Every transition is precise and purposeful. Each cutline and break in the surface is consistently tight, clean, and crisp, creating graphical elements to their geometric forms that only accentuate its overall beauty.

So without further delay…check out the video below for the quick Audi TT sketch!

Drawing a Compact Car like a VW

Compact cars and sedans are making a strong comeback in the US due to the necessity of meeting fuel efficiency standards….so its popularity is starting to increase 2 fold! Since most of the time, I have been focusing on drawing sports cars, I finally decided to sit down and get some practice drawing a compact car for a change. VW’s have some of the finest looking compact cars like the Golf. Though this is not quite a VW golf…it is intended to be somewhat of a compact car resembling VW. That’s the theory anyway.

I have to admit that this process was a lot of fun. For some reason I have not really gotten into the habit of drawing different car segments but it is crucial to do so in order to not only understand each market segment, but to also familiarize yourself with the proportions of that segment. So drawing compact cars is indeed an important step in developing your visual vocabulary.

At some point, I hope to capture or discuss vehicle packaging as well. Until then…hit the jump on the video below and let me know what you think. Also be sure to practice drawing a compact car yourself after watching the vid.

Looking forward to your feedback

Aston Martin Vantage Designer Sketch!

Let’s face it…Aston Martins are sexy lookin refined beasts! Creating an Aston Martin Designer Sketch is a lot cheaper than buying the real thing(unless you’d rather buy the 1:18 scale). The Vantage is pretty pricey topping around $180 for the V12…so I suppose I won’t be buying one of those soon…but I will gladly take a 1:18th scale version So drawing this sports car in particular was a lot of fun for me to do. I would also like to take note that I decided to create this sketch on my Fujitsu T-5010 tablet with a wacom enabled digital pen. I don’t get all the pressure levels like a cintiq tablet but it’s definitely good enough for me considering the excellent price.

This will be a rear 3/4 view. The vantage has such beautiful proportions that it’s probably one of the perfect sports cars to use in terms of proportion and stance on a vehicle. Design cues remain relevant from previous model years by maintaining the signature grill shape (though you won’t see it on this sketch).

The Vantage’s design is so clean and pure that cosmetic details are used at a minimum so you can behold it’s gorgeous exterior styling.

Hit the jump on the video below and let me know what you think!

Looking forward to your feedback

Drawing cars on newsprint paper is a little different and takes getting used to. You have to have the right tools to draw on such a large surface. We continue with some more newsprint paper sketches with our 3rd demo. We’ll continue this demo with a tuscan red art stix. Art stix are of the same grade as prismacolor pencils. Gives you an excellent value range and allows you shade in large areas with the broad side of the art stix. Very cool indeed. So sit back and watch the video. If there is something in particular you would like me to sketch, let me know.

We continue with some more newsprint paper sketches with our 2nd demo. I’ll be using a tuscan red art stix. Art stix are of the same grade as prismacolor pencils. Gives you an excellent value range and allows you shade in large areas with the broad side of the art stix.

As you watch the video, bear in mind the following.

1. Core reflection – core shading on the side of the car that tracks the apex of curvature of the car.

2. Line weight – darkening the areas of concentration and focal point

3. Quick background – I just drew a simple box. Always start SIMPLE! Don’t get too fancy too soon.

So sit back and watch the video. If there is something in particular you would like me to sketch, let me know.

I recently stopped in to visit the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, California, which can only be visited with a reservation, 2 weekends per month. One benefit of the reservation system seems to be that the museum is not crowded, and perhaps that is why the museum has chosen to trust us to see the cars without ropes or chains blocking the view. The museum is built in the style of a 1920′s Paris Auto Salon, and is stocked with some of the finest examples of pre-world war II French automobiles.

The museum offers great views of these masterpieces from the second floor. In the foreground here is the one-of-a-kind Dubonnet Hispano-Suiza “Xenia”, and in the background, a Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic coupe, which is perhaps the most valuable car in the world.

The sensational Talbot-Lago teardrop coupe.

Beautiful Delahaye convertible.

And a Delahaye Coupe.

Amongst so many Bugattis, there are even unrestored examples from the famous Schlumpf collection, as well as one recovered from a lake bed on the Austrian border.

The museum has an impressive collection of race cars upstairs, with early Grand Prix cars from Bugatti, Delahaye, and Buciali.

There is a special exhibit of the incredible cars designed and built by obscure French genius Gabrielle Voisin. One of the great early pioneers in Aviation, Voisin then turned his attention to producing wildly innovative cars.

1936 Voisin Aerosport had a fully integrated body shape, with fenders and doors flowing together.

A faithful recreation of Voisin’s 1923 Laboratoire Grand Prix car. On this Monocoque-chassis car, the propeller drove the water-pump.

Art Deco Radiator Mascott

1935 Voisin Type C25 Aerodyne

So, if you live in or are visiting southern California, I suggest you make the time for a visit to the Mullin museum. And take a sketch pad!

What’s it like to draw the ultimate driving machine with a black marker? Well……fast! A few weeks ago we published a couple of sketches using a Sharpie Marker so we continue on with drawing cars using different brands. I sketched a few of my drawings before using Sharpie and then I decided to start off the BMW with an old prismacolor marker.

I want people to understand that digital tools are definitely great but the heart of your concentration should be with traditional mediums. Sometimes the digital tools are just easier for me to capture video and to teach….but let it be known that the intent is for you to draw cars using traditional tools.

So we are going to go with another Sharpie Marker sketch so sit back and enjoy the demo.

We continue on with our 3 min sketchin’ exercise! This video tutorial shows you how to sketch a car in 3 min….or somewhere around there Why? Well….creating dynamic looking sketches require a lot of practice and precision. The only way to help train your mind to interpret and incorporate details in your sketch, is to force time limits.

You don’t need to focus on design, just sketching and incorporating details as quickly as you can. This will help train your brain to accurately draw shapes and give it an artistic flair.

These principles will help you to build a very “dynamic” look to your sketches with life and movement. Just remember that it is always about learning and building your current knowledge base.

Hope this inspires you and enjoy the video!

Tablet PC

Software – Painter 12

Wacom Pen

The above tools were used to “simulate” traditional drawing methods. Please note that if you ARE a beginner, it is key to start creating your sketches with paper, markers, and pencils. It is THE best way to charting your path to be a sketching pro!

Now that we have drawn a ton of cars so far, I thought I introduce “Tall Cars” or also better known as Crossover vehicles. Believe it or not, crossover vehicles use a wheelbase or vehicle architecture similar to that of cars. In fact, most crossover vehicles use a car platform with a uni-body construction as opposed to Body-on-frame.

Why is this done? Well you uni-body construction allows for “car” handling characteristics and since the uni-body gives the structure more rigidity, it is able to handle corners better like a car. Also…it allows for reduced mass which is always good. So the basic principle here is to take the car platform and raise it higher to that of traditional SUVs. This gives the customer car handling, but a higher ride height for visibility, better fuel economy, space and luggage capacity, and a fairly nimble handling car. A great compromise to the SUV.

Check out the video as I sketch the tall car….and yes…I should have added another door.

I decided to start crankin out some more sports car sketches. What is it about sports cars that drives us to extreme excitement? I think it’s pretty simple. What’s not to like? They’re sexy, fast, dynamic, exciting, and nail you to the back of the seat at the touch of the accelerator.

So starting from today…I will try to post up more sketches in addition to the videos. It gets me to practice and hopefully provide you with additional inspiration.

To start off I decided to sketch the 2013 Porsche 911. Instead of my traditional black or blue prismacolor sketch, I decided to combine some hotter colors using multiple prismacolor pencils and a couple of markers. This name of the game is to get to sketching some sweet sports cars that personify the intensity and excitement of the car.

Learning how to draw sports cars and communicating visual dynamics is another technique altogether which I will be sure to cover in future videos and posts.

So without too much reading, check out the sketch and let me know what you think. Hope you get a little inspiration from it and eventually drive you to draw yourself

Have a good one!
