A couple weeks ago, we started getting emails from some users about spam they were receiving at email addresses used only for Dropbox. We’ve been working hard to get to the bottom of this, and want to give you an update.

Our investigation found that usernames and passwords recently stolen from other websites were used to sign in to a small number of Dropbox accounts. We’ve contacted these users and have helped them protect their accounts.

A stolen password was also used to access an employee Dropbox account containing a project document with user email addresses. We believe this improper access is what led to the spam. We’re sorry about this, and have put additional controls in place to help make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Keeping Dropbox secure is at the heart of what we do, and we’re taking steps to improve the safety of your Dropbox even if your password is stolen, including:

Two-factor authentication, a way to optionally require two proofs of identity (such as your password and a temporary code sent to your phone) when signing in. (Coming in a few weeks)

New automated mechanisms to help identify suspicious activity. We’ll continue to add more of these over time.

A new page that lets you examine all active logins to your account.

In some cases, we may require you to change your password. (For example, if it’s commonly used or hasn’t been changed in a long time)

At the same time, we strongly recommend you improve your online safety by setting a unique password for each website you use. Though it’s easy to reuse the same password on different websites, this means if any one site is compromised, all your accounts are at risk. Tools like 1Password can help you manage strong passwords across multiple sites.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at support+security@dropbox.com. We’re committed to keeping your Dropbox safe and will continue to monitor this situation carefully.

Since time immemorial (2008), folks have been asking us for a bigger Dropbox. We’ve heard from architects with giant drafting files and photographers with huge portfolios, but mostly we hear from families who have more than 100 GB of photos, docs and videos. And now that Dropbox can automatically upload your photos from just about any camera or phone, everyone’s adding tons of pictures and videos to Dropbox every day. As people add more stuff to Dropbox, we want to make sure they don’t have to worry about space.

Today we’re happy to announce that our upgrades are getting a huge upgrade! Dropbox Pro now comes in flavors of 100 and 200 GB, but at the price of the original 50 and 100 GB plans. For those of you who need even more space, a brand new 500 GB plan is also joining the posse! If you’re already a Dropbox Pro subscriber, just take a seat and enjoy the fireworks — your Dropbox will supersize itself automatically tonight.

All this goodness goes live on our pricing page this evening, so stay tuned. We’ve got an extra bonus too: since sharing is caring, we’re giving existing Pro users a three month Pro 100 trial to share with friends or family!

We hope that these bigger Dropboxes help you create amazing stuff
Happy Dropboxing!

P.S. For those of you using Dropbox for your business, check out Teams! You get a single centralized bill, phone support, and 1 TB of space to start.

Hey everyone!

A couple weeks ago we wrapped up our second annual Dropquest, and we’re happy to announce the results! Dropquest was a magical scavenger hunt (through space and time?) that sent our users across Dropbox and the internet to win 1 GB of space and a shot at some amazing prizes.

All in all, around half a million people participated in Dropquest, of which 157,000 braved every obstacle to complete it. Special congrats go to Nathan F for beasting through every puzzle and placing first in Dropquest with a time of 4 hours and 40 minutes!! Nathan, your sleuthing will go down in the annals of Dropquest history for all eternity! Congratulations to all our other finishers too, who scored prizes ranging from Dropbox t-shirts and hoodies to more Dropbox space. You guys can expect your prizes within 4-6 weeks!

So we think the first Dropquest went pretty awesome, but there were a few things we wanted to spruce up this time around. We’re really impressed by all of you who stepped up and figured out how to turn flags into music, how to spell messages by touring San Francisco, or how to move a knight around our about page. You guys are wicked smart!

We’ve got a few ideas for next year’s Dropquest. First, we’re thinking of running two different Dropquests with different sets of prizes and rules — we’ll host one for people who just want to spend a Saturday sleuthing through some fun puzzles, and we’ll host another one for you masochists out there willing to get your hands dirty with maths and rocket science. Next, we’ll also try to facilitate groups working together. Dropbox is all about sharing and working together, so it only makes sense that Dropquest would be the same way too .

How about you guys? Any suggestions or comments? Let us know what ideas you have for next year’s Quest. Interested in writing next year’s quest? Consider working at Dropbox!

Thanks for all of you who showed up this year. Dropquest is a blast to make, and we made it just for you guys.

Check out a gallery of some Questers adventures!

We’re happy to announce that we’ve rolled out the third part of our photos story: now you can automatically upload all the photos and videos you take with your iPhone or iPad to Dropbox!

Don’t worry about losing those once-in-a-lifetime shots, no matter what happens to your iPhone. Get the latest Dropbox app for iOS and simply turn on the camera upload feature. When you open the app, photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad are saved to Dropbox at their original size and quality in a private Camera Uploads folder. It’s easy to flip through all your automatically uploaded photos and videos in the Photos section of the Dropbox website. You can decide whether to use your data plan or Wi-Fi only, and pictures will simply upload while the app’s running! Plus, Dropbox won’t kill your battery if you’re low on power.

With this release, your iPhone, Android, and digital cameras can finally all work together. It’s easy to bring your photos and videos together in one place. And once your photos are in Dropbox, it’s super easy to share them with your friends and family using a shared folder or a link!

In case you missed it, you don’t need to worry about this feature using all your Dropbox space — we’ll give you an extra 500 MB for free for your first automatic upload from a camera, phone or tablet! The more photos and videos you upload this way, the more free space we’ll give you (up to a total of 3 GB per Dropbox account)!

What are you waiting for?
Download the latest version of Dropbox for iOS from the iTunes App Store now!

Back in November we posted about a whole bunch of ways to get more free space on Dropbox, last month we doubled our referral credits, and just last weekend we kicked off Dropquest II.

With so many ways to increase the size of your Dropbox, we decided to whip up a new Get Space page to put it all in one place. Some ways to get more space (and lots of it) include upgrading your account, referring your friends, or connecting with Twitter and Facebook!

To boost your account, just follow the link at the top of your dropbox.com homepage.
More free space awaits you!

PS: Don’t forget you have until June 2 to complete Dropquest to get an extra 1 GB free!

Many of you were around for last year’s Dropquest, where we sent y’all on a magical journey through Dropbox and the interwebs. Wordokus were solved, music puzzles were deciphered, origami cranes were folded, and dragons were slain. All in all, nearly half a million Dropquesters were rewarded for their craftiness, skill, and effort. That was well over a year ago, and since then we’ve been holding our cards and toiling away to craft a Dropquest successor worthy of the first.

That being said, we’ve got something to say about the Dropquest landing next weekend:

It’s back.

It’s harder.

It’s epic-er.

If you’re experiencing Dropquest for the first time, or if you’re a veteran needing a recap, here’s the scoop:

What is Dropquest? Dropquest is a multi-step scavenger hunt that has you solve a series of puzzles (inspired by the likes of MIT’s Mystery Hunt or Notpron [though not nearly as time/effort-consuming]). Everyone who completes Dropquest will get at least 1 GB of extra free space, even if you participated last year. Also, everyone starts at the same time, but the questers who finish the soonest get additional amazing prizes.

1st place (1) Dropbox employee hoodie, LIMITED EDITION Dropbox Hack Week t-shirt, Dropbox drawing signed by the entire Dropbox team, invitation to help write the next Dropquest, 100 GB for life
2nd place (10) Dropbox employee hoodie, Dropbox t-shirt, 20 GB for life
3rd place (15) Dropbox t-shirt, 5 GB for life
4th place (50) 2 GB for life
5th place (100) 1 GB for life

Any rules? This year, we won’t tolerate use of our support, forums, or blog for Dropquest hints or answers — our wonderful mods and support team would really appreciate it. In fact, you’ll probably get disqualified if we catch you doing this.

When is it? Dropquest starts Saturday, May 12, at 10AM PST (17:00 GMT). Don’t be late.

To get started, head here

(this link won’t work until Dropquest is ready)

Other questions:

Wait, did you say harder? Yes indeed! We’ve got a whole trove of puzzles that will require a discerning eye and tons of creativity to solve, and many of this year’s puzzles will require you to go several layers deep (*cue Inception horns*). Feel free to grab a friend (last year’s winners Veronica and Evonne would definitely encourage you to do so!), but just be aware that one key doesn’t fit every door this year…

Woah, it’s WAY too hard! After Dropquest has been out for a while, we’ll periodically release hints for each step to help you guys out. Use these at your own risk.

How long will Dropquest take? To be honest, we don’t know! There are a bunch of factors that dynamically shift while Dropquest is running, so it’s pretty hard to tell. Last year Dropquest was finished in a little under 2 hours, but the Black-ops team doubts that it’ll be solved in under 5 hours this year — feel free to prove us wrong .

Will I need any special tools? Most if not all of this year’s puzzles can be solved using your internet browser and pencil + paper. While not necessary, we highly suggest downloading and installing the Dropbox desktop application. Several puzzles take place within your Dropbox, and installing will make your life much easier. There won’t be any need for a printer this time (sorry origami enthusiasts!)

What if I win free space? Aside from that being awesome, you should know that your current account type (e.g., Basic, Pro 50, Pro 100) won’t change. Your free space is just for you, so you can’t give it to anyone else or sell it. As always, using Dropbox is subject to our Terms of Service and other terms. Check them out at http://www.dropbox.com/terms.

What’s the story behind Dropquest? Dropquest is written and produced by a two-man cell of the Black-ops Team, and is the result of Dropbox’s very sacred Hack Week, where employees get a full week to work on any project they’d like no matter how technical or random. There are plans to produce a new Quest for every subsequent Hack Week. To learn more about why this is truly an incredible place to work, visit our jobs page.
