RADIO MILESTONE / Saturday Afternoon Air

Hey, There!

I'm on the radio again Saturday afternoon, and I'll hit a personal milestone: This will be my 900th radio show.

899 of them have been as a volunteer. I still regret the one show that I got paid for, but if NBA and NHL players can compete in the Olympics, I guess I can still claim my amateur status.

I've wanted to be on the radio since I was a little kid, and I finally did something about it. As I'm fond of saying, my experience is one of the rare ones where the reality is better than the fantasy.

Hey, There!

KUVO – my radio home – kicked off its Winter Membership Drive today. I've been asked to come in and help with the festivities, so I'll be on the air, Friday, February 16 – not doing my usual music show, but acting as a "pledge buddy" on Rodney's (the regular host) program.

The only way community radio stays on the air is through the support of the people who listen and care enough to pony up a bit. If you'd be so inclined, I'd be extremely grateful.

KUVO has many levels of membership, and they're offering several swell "thank you" gifts (check 'em out at http://www.kuvo.org). The toll-free number is 800-574-5886. And no donation is too small. Your support is the most important thing.

I've volunteered in community radio for almost 31 years. If you've had occasion to enjoy even a few minutes of my air time, or if you enjoy KUVO in general, this evening would be an ideal time to show your appreciation with your credit card.

I'm on the radio tonight, opposite the NCAA college basketball championship. I'm not much of a college hoops fan, but I try to catch the final because it's usually a pretty good game. I suggest watching with the audio muted and KUVO on the speakers.

If that wasn't enough conflict, my dear friend Andy Chaikin will be appearing on The Colbert Report during my last half-hour (Mountain Time, anyway) to discuss his book, A Passion for Mars. Through the miracle of technology, I'll get to watch that after I sign off.
