TOPIC – DIY Distribution

• How it used to be:

  • Band got good, got a local following, attracted label interest (by luck, networking, or submitting non-solicited demo)

  • label fronted cash for recording (that the band still owes)

  • band made record, went and gigged to hopefully generate record sales to recoup the cost of producing and marketing said record.

  • If you were lucky, your record made enough money to 1) pay for the production and 2) gave the record co. money to want a subsequent record.

  • Most record deals protect the label since they’re the ones taking the most financial risk.  It isn’t until a string of successes when the artists start really seeing money.

  • One-hit-wonders break this mold since their single can have meteoric rise and generate a lot of sales.  Typically, follow up efforts are not as successful.

• It doesn’t have to be this way anymore!

  • Recording is so much easier and cheaper now

  • Distribution channels are open to the general public

• Indie Distribution channels

  • CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com)

    • The first real indi distribution channel!

    • Started as a CD duping and shipping service

    • Does CD distribution, iTunes, Amazon MP3, Spotify

    • Higher upfront, but one-time fees

  • Must sightread very well

  • Knowledge of styles – Latin and ballroom dance

• Sight reading to a click and styles – Time signature changes, styles changes, Tempo changes, Big band shots and set ups, think simple and solid not fancy

• this is changing but you will be emailed charts with a video camera set up and they will be on the phone.

• Groove is key ( if its a cliche its good)

• What the Audition Process Looks like

  • Sight Reading and Styles Together

• Putting a Band together

  • Theme night party band Dance club band from 7-10pm

• The Best Bands

  • 2 need to sing ( not required but highly recommended) a male and female is recommended

  • 3 and 4 pc bands No 5 piece bands are generally accepted

  • you need to have sets together -Country night, rock night, disco night, calypso night/island party Beatles night ( be flexible and ready to learn new tunes)

  • Jazz bands that play in cocktail lounges must sing

  • backing tracks help thicken out your sound yes its more work but will help you get hired

  • you will need to establish the band this is not a weekend project it will take time and an investment

  • get a video and website together

  • should have about 250 tunes in your bag with the goal of 500 hundred all top hits from the last 50 years and all danceable

• Things that all crew must be able to complete

• Bands that get hired must

  • All must be able to pass a medical blood test and x-rays

  • need a passport

  • over 21 and no criminal record obtain federal check

  • must have a video showcasing songs. you must be well dressed tux’s ball gowns or matching uniforms, clean cut no piercings tattoos, showcase diversity, must be professional looking and sounds this will be an investment

  • the band you sell is the band they get what appears on the video must show up at the gangway no substitutions

• Other jobs you will have on the boat

  • safety – traffic director – muster station attendant

  • fire training, survival training, launching life rafts, water survival, fire fighting skills, bomb identification,

  • In an emergency you don’t wait for help to arrive your it and you’re fighting to save yours and everyone’s life

• Agents Vs Direct Hire

  • agents vs direct agent takes 15% but you can shop around cruise lines

  • 2 year agreement from the moment you leave ships

• The life you will live

  • you will share a small cabin with bunk beds fighting will get you instantly fired and if you’re part of a band can get the band fired

  • be easy going

  • check your drinking – crew bar – drinks

  • find ways to practice, learn finale, arrange, take lesson, hold drum groups stay busy

  • After a few months it becomes the nicest minimum security prison

  • the gig depends on the length of cruise 3 day- 7day 10 day 14 day 21 day world cruises

Drummer of the week, Jeff Bowders

• Born in 1976 and his favorite movie is “Rocky”, www.jeffbowders.com
• He has played for people like Rebecca St. James, Ginny Owens, Fusebox, Chris Tomlin, and Paul Colman Trio. Jeff is currently Paul Gilbert’s drummer and an instructor at Musicians Institute. Recently came out with an album entitled The Pilgrimage of Thingamuhjig, featuring his drumming.
