Transitional Kitchen and Bath Design Tops Trends for 2012

National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) Reveals Top Kitchen & Bath Trends for 2012

More than 350 National Kitchen and Bath Association member designers from across the USA and Canada took part in the 2012 NKBA Design Trend Survey to list the materials, product types and styles that were incorporated into their kitchen and bath designs in the final months of 2011. While these broad trends will not be evident in every local market the following are the highlights of the NKBA’s 2012 Kitchen & Bath Style Report:

Transitional kitchen design as featured in our transitional kitchen portfolio (click for more)

Transitional over Traditional:

NKBA's survey found that – for the first time since it began tracking annual design trends – "traditional" no longer comes out as the most popular type of design. The survey found that, in kitchens and bathrooms, "transitional" is now the most common style.

Cherry woods continue to decline in popularity: The NKBA survey shows designers moving away from cherry wood. In the report released in 2010, 80% of NKBA member kitchen designers had recently specified cherry cabinetry. That fell to 72% in 2011 and fell to 69% in the 2012 report.

Solid surfaces, otherwise known as engineered stone, continue to grow in popularity: Granite and quartz surfaces continue to be the clear No. 1 and No. 2 choices, but NKBA reports their popularity has waned slightly.

Polished nickel bath fixtures are becoming more popular especially with luxury bath remodels

The Return of Polished Chrome and Nickel: In bathrooms, polished chrome use was us from 46% in 2011 to 65% in 2012. Polished nickel is up in kitchens, from 17% in 2011 to 25% in 2012. In bathrooms, polished nickel is up from 28% to 32%. As polished finishes grow, brushed finishes are losing ground.

Darker finishes are becoming more popular especially with transitional designs

The NKBA says natural kitchen cabinetry is continuing to move to darker finishes. Dark natural finishes were at 58%, up from 43% of just two years ago. Painted cabinetry continues to be dominated by white. White cabinets were recently specified by 59% of kitchen designers, other colors only by 38% of designers.

Shades of Gray are gaining favor for cabinetry colors: As recently as 2010 gray was used as the overall color scheme by only 9% of designers in kitchens, but increased to 17% in 2011 and the number nearly doubled, to 33%, in 2012.

NKBA reported that glass is still only a niche material for kitchen countertops, as featured in the above kitchen, but is growing in backsplashes - especially with glass tiles. The material was specified by 52% of designers, up strongly from 41% in the 2011 report.

"I have been seeing this trend as quite a few of my clients are leaning toward transitional styling for kitchens (clean lines, neutral tones, natural materials). Some of our master bath projects are going one step further, as of late, and are incorporating more and more contemporary design features and materials at the client's request. In particular, easy to clean surfaces such as quartz counter tops and clean glass shower walls, along with cool colors and simple tile designs are more and more prevalent." Survey participant and Drury Designer, Brigitte Fabi, CMKBD

Fresh off the heels of receiving last year’s 2011 NKBA Design Vision competition’s Best of Show award, Drury Designer, Gladys Schanstra tells us how she created an award-winning contemporary kitchen design and remodel located in Elmhurst, IL.

Modern Kitchen Design as Part of Whole House Renovation

Gladys had a blast designing several rooms throughout the home, “This kitchen was part of a remodel that included a large addition that transformed a colonial home. It was an exciting project to work on as the client and project were terrific, and it was a real fun design challenge to work with them in converting traditional interiors to a modern aesthetic. The transformation is quite striking and the client loves how it turned out.”

Meet Designer Peggy Udelhofen, CKD, ASID

Drury Designer, Peggy Udelhofen, CKD, ASID

We are pleased to announce that Peggy Udelhofen has joined Drury Design as a designer. A professional kitchen designer since 1999, Peggy is a well-known designer whose clients' homes are frequently featured in the Glen Ellyn Kitchen Walk collection.

Certified Kitchen Designer and ASID Member

In 2008, Ms. Udelhofen earned her CKD [certified kitchen designer] designation from NKBA [National Kitchen and Bath Association]. She is also a registered member of the ASID [American Society for Interior Design].

A graduate of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, Ms. Udelhofen studied interior design and art. In addition to kitchens, her design experience also includes consulting for hospitals and clinics in the healthcare industry and managing sales for a furniture showroom in the Merchandise Mart. Peggy was exposed to kitchen design and the industry growing up in a family-owned countertop fabrication business.

Peggy’s Kitchen Design Approach

Peggy's Glen Ellyn kitchen design featured on the Glen Ellyn Kitchen Walk

"My design philosophy is very simple and clean. Kitchens should reflect the owner’s personality. I don’t mix styles a lot. I like to incorporate the style of the home, and match its vintage in the design. The value I bring to the client is in being a hard worker. I like to be there for people. I will bend over backwards to find right the thing. Creative and enthusiastic are the two words people use to describe me.”

“We have admired Peggy’s work for years, plus she is a lot of fun, so she is a terrific addition to our staff”, says Gail Drury, CMKBD, President of Drury Design. “We are delighted to have her on our team of professional designers and know that her clients’ will really enjoy working with Peggy and benefit from her design skills, approach and background.”

Transitional Wheaton Custom Kitchen Remodel

Kitchen Remodel Before

The existing kitchen of this meticulously kept Wheaton home needed some serious help. The cabinetry and appliances were from the late 60’s, the work area was cramped, and the layout of the peninsula cut the kitchen off from the eating area and the fireplace. The kitchen was their last big home project and the homeowners had a list of must-have requirements.

“We wanted the kitchen renovation to be the crown jewel of the house where we could spend lots of time for family gatherings and entertaining. And, we wanted this new space to match the style of the rest of the house.”

The Clients' List of Kitchen Renovation Must Haves:

• A professional 48” range
• Remove the peninsula to combine the eating area and fireplace with the kitchen
• Upgrade exhaust ventilation
• An under mount refrigerator for beverage and other convenience appliances
• Incorporate the color blue!
• Compliment the colonial style of the home

Transitional Wheaton Kitchen Remodel

The Design and Remodeling Plan:

By removing the peninsula and opening the old kitchen to the eating area and hearth, an open floor plan was created - space now available for the large appliances and more living space for the family. A large island provided plenty of work space and a table for casual family dining.

Tile backsplash focal point

Inset cabinetry with a beaded edge panel provided the traditional colonial design. White paint was used on the perimeter cabinetry to counterbalance the strength of the blue on the island. The gray granite on all the counter surfaces helps to unite the color design elements in the kitchen.

Natural light and balance were achieved by placing two windows on each side of the hood. The hood was designed to incorporate warm wood tones in the mantle. The focal point tile design at the range is repeated around the fireplace.

Transitional Wheaton Kitchen with Blue Island

A white painted fireplace surround with a wood mantle provides continuity with the perimeter cabinets and the range hood design. The hearth-stone was replaced with a piece of marble that matches the backsplash.

The Homeowners Say:

”It’s everything we dreamed it would be! It’s beautiful, unique, well laid out, functional and has tons of space. We love the range but have to go with the under mount fridge in the island as our favorite. It’s the one thing that ends up being a surprise to everyone when they first see it. As far as features go, I’d have to go with the “theater seating” at the island for folks to relax while still watching all the cooking is our number one.”

"We had the neighbors over for dinner (2 families). One of our neighbors had just started a subscription to Wine Enthusiast and his comment was that our kitchen rivaled anything he had seen in the magazine (that was the first outsider confirmation of what we already knew)."

Designer Terry Kenney

"Our designer, Terry Kenney was fantastic to work with as she listened and adjusted her approach to fit us perfectly. She knew when to push back on some of our ideas when they didn’t feel right to her or would have felt forced or unbalanced (i.e. the extra cabinets by the fireplace) and she knew when to push us to step out of our (very plain) comfort zone on designs (drawer pulls)."

Elmhurst Kitchen and Bath Design Featured In Chicago Home + Garden

Thanks to Gina Bazer of Chicago Home and Garden for writing about a Drury Design kitchen and bath design project in Elmhurst. Here’s the story of this Best of Show award winner.

Award-Winning Elmhurst Home Renovation

When Gladys Schanstra, CKD/CBD, began working on a client’s home in Elmhurst, she faced the challenge of bringing an old Colonial home into the twenty-first century.

After working with architect Michael Sparks of Sparks Architects, the team built a two-story addition and a complete overhaul of the floor plan. In the end, their work became the best of show winner of the National Kitchen & Bath Association Midwest’s Design Visions annual 2011design competition.

Gladys focused on the kitchen and living room first.

The client not only wanted this area to be more open, but they needed it to fit their growing family. To meet the needs of the client, Gladys gave a more contemporary look to the two rooms.

Contemporary Kitchen Design

The use of the contemporary style, similar colors and materials helped create continuity in the large space. The black cabinetry goes from floor to ceiling throughout the kitchen, and a millwork bridge over the sink gives keeps the room symmetrical. These cabinets are also used in the living room.

Throughout the two rooms, all the essentials are met. Four seats at the large island for the kids allow ample breakfast seating while a message center helps keep homework organized, phones charged and the calendar in line. To keep the kitchen kid-friendly, Gladys used durable materials like Caesarstone countertops and a stainless steel sink.

Spa-Like Master Bath Design

The other main addition was a master suite with an en-suite bathroom. The owners wanted an overall spa feel with a large tub, separate shower, hidden toilet and two vanities. Gladys was able to make their wish list into a reality in a beautiful bathroom, while also creating an escape that reminds the owners of one of their favorite vacation spots in Colorado.

Best of all, when the clients felt they were outgrowing their home and wanted to sell in an unfriendly market, Gladys was able to create the feeling of a brand new home within their old Colonial.

Best in Midwest Kitchen and Bath Design Goes to Drury Design

Sweeping the 2011 National Kitchen and Bath Association [NKBA] Midwest Design Vision awards, Drury Design took "Best of Show" and 10 other awards for client projects in Elmhurst, Burr Ridge, Hinsdale, Lisle, Geneva, Bloomingdale and Wheaton, Illinois. “Winning 11 awards is quite an honor. But more than that, the wins recognize our clients' vision to modernize their homes and progress their lifestyle with a signature design, so a big thank-you goes out to them,” said Gail Drury, certified master kitchen and bath designer and Drury Design's CEO.

DRURY DESIGN WINS 11 2011 NKBA MIDWEST DESIGN VISION HONORS

Best Of Show: Gladys Schanstra, CKD, CBD

2011 Design Visions 2nd Place / Large Bath Design in Wheaton, IL

Large Kitchen: Gail Drury, CMKBD 1st & 2nd place; Terry Kenney 3rd place

Medium Kitchen: Gladys Schanstra, CKD, CBD 1st place; Terry Kenney 3rd place

Large Bath: Gail Drury, CMKBD 1st place, Terry Kenney 2nd place, Gladys Schanstra , CKD, CBD 3rd place

Honorable Mention Kitchens: Brigitte Fabi, CMKBD; Terry Kenney

These design and remodeling projects feature Grabill custom cabinetry and Wolf Sub-Zero appliances. Read the full full story here.

ELMHURST COLONIAL WINS BEST OF SHOW AND 1st PLACE MEDIUM KITCHEN

After attempting to sell their home, these clients chose to stay and invest in modernizing their home. Designed by Gladys Schanstra, CKD, CBD and the winner of NKBA Midwest’s Best of Show Award, this project involved adding on a new custom kitchen and master bath, along with major updates throughout the house.

2011 Design Visions Best of Show Elmhurst, IL Kitchen Design

The kitchen now features an open layout, seating for four at the island, sizable storage, and durable, kid-friendly materials. Elements throughout the space linger from the old house, such as the living room fireplace surround with dentil molding.

2011 Design Visions 1st Place Award / Medium Bath Design in Elmhurst, IL

In the master bath, a large, round soaking tub creates a focal point between the shower and water closet room, both angled symmetrically around the tub. “Old wood plank” tiles cover the floor to give the room a rustic, warm lodge feel without the maintenance of actual wood. Linear Crossville mosaic glass tiles in green tones highlight the shower walls and tub surround, creating a natural retreat.

“The best reward for me is seeing the clients use this space comfortably every day and enjoying all the aesthetics that go along with it. They no longer have to choose between a beautiful kitchen or a functional one – who says you can’t have it all?” said Gladys Schanstra, NKBA Midwest Best of Show winner.

BURR RIDGE HOME WINS 1st PLACE LARGE KITCHEN AND LARGE BATH

Can traditional detailing marry modern simplicity – and live happily ever after?

Custom kitchen designer Gail Drury, CMKBD, answered that question with an emphatic yes. Winning first place in the large kitchen and large bath categories, two very different design visions come together to compliment this Burr Ridge, Illinois home’s architecture.

2011 Design Visions 1st Place Award / Large Kitchen Design in Burr Ridge, IL

White cabinets surround a walnut-stained island, balancing simple lines with rich details. An intricate tile design incorporates a mix of stainless steel tiles, marble tiles and metal liner strips for a stunning result.

Challenged to fit a myriad of appliances and upgrade storage while staying within the existing kitchen’s footprint, intelligent design solutions define the space. A furniture-like island divides the kitchen space from the living area for a better traffic flow. A Lutron lighting system conceals all electrical outlets.

Creating a calming retreat with a luxurious, spa-type feeling was the main objective for the master bath design.

Rich materials like variations of Calcutta gold marble, a wave of undulating mosaic tiles and polished nickel faucets, exude luxury in this master bath.

2011 Design Visions 1st Place Award / Large Master Bath Design in Burr Ridge, IL

To achieve the openness the clients desired, the design replaced interior walls with glass panels. Frosted glass creates privacy for the commode area. Clear glass in the shower area showcases the tile design. A digital shower system complete with stereo, mood lights and multiple showerheads, amplifies the sense of luxury.

The overflow Kohler tub itself is a statement to the elegance of this exquisite room. The fine cabinetry hides many amenities, a few of which are mirrored backs on the doors for ease of hair styling and a framed TV to keep up on the daily news.

About the NKBA Chicago Midwest Design Visions Contest

NKBA's Chicago Midwest chapter sponsors the Design Vision contest in partnership with Chicago Home Garden magazine. Judged by NKBA Chicago Midwest chapter members, the contest recognizes outstanding kitchen and bath design. Competition is open to designers throughout the Midwest. To enter, designers submitted photos along with a project profile. Five Drury Design projects received 2009 NKBA Design Vision Awards and two received honorable mentions. In 2010, the team won six awards and an honorable mention.

Transitional Kitchen Design Makes Cover of Kitchen and Bath Design News

“An award-winning kitchen remodel transforms a dated space into a contemporary showpiece”

It’s always an honor when one of our client designs is featured on the cover of a leading industry publication. Thanks to Kim Berndson who wrote the cover story for Kitchen and Bath Design News.

Read Kitchen and Bath Design News project study.

Here’s our take . . .

Transitional Kitchen Design in Glen Ellyn

As with any remodeling project, there were many challenges to deal with for Gail Drury, CMKBD and president of Drury Design and Ginny Blasco of Ginny Blasco Design as they teamed up for this recent kitchen remodel project in Glen Ellyn.

It was a traditional style kitchen with lots of oak throughout the space and an inconveniently placed oven hood that closed off the room.

Lucky for Gail and Ginny, the hood could be moved but the oak flooring had to stay. Gail and Ginny not only made the design work, but ended up winning the Grabill Cabinetry Company’s 2010 Home Collections Design Competition with this remodel.

Gail and Ginny decided to contrast the light colored oak flooring with beautiful dark colored Grabill custom cabinetry that was stained with an Abby brown finish. This espresso color was used throughout the kitchen in floor to ceiling cabinets, as well as into the adjacent wet bar. To break up the dark cabinetry, high-gloss soft green accent cabinets were incorporated in the kitchen and on the island as well.

Other focal points of the award-winning transitional kitchen design include the custom designed hood, the backsplash that was puzzle cut from a single slab of marble to make an intricate mosaic tile design. Custom pewter accents were used throughout the kitchen, including decorative supports for the raised bar top and and hammered pewter tile inserts on the island corners.

All of these design elements, combined with high-end appliances from Sub-zero, Wolf and Miele, and beautiful sinks and faucets from Blanco and Kohler, come together into an award- winning transitional kitchen design that revives the home in contemporary fashion.

Elegant Custom Kitchen Remodel Transforms Naperville Home

After almost 60 years of mismatched touch-ups, this client’s Naperville home was ready for a masterful first-floor renovation. Only a dramatic makeover plan that included capturing space from the attic and the garage could accomplish the client’s goals to up-size livability, modernize functionality and created an award-winning, Tuscan-inspired kitchen and entertaining experience complete with an indoor/outdoor bar service.

The New Floor Plan Reconfiguration Included a Kitchen, Mudroom, Desk Area, and Wet Bar From the Existing Space

Though challenged to work around past renovations, uneven roof lines, an awkward floor plan and an obtrusive support column, Drury Design designer - Gladys Schanstra, CKD
CBD collaborated with architect Craig Pryde, of PPK Architects to formulate a plan which incorporated everything on the homeowner’s wish list. Along with the kitchen, remodeling plans extended to the family room and front hall entryway, and added a new mudroom, desk area and a wet bar to serve both indoor and outdoor guests.

Removing the wall between the kitchen and the family room created space for the wet bar. Now accessible from the family room, the wet bar is only a few steps away from the sliding glass door that leads out to the pool, offering convenient access to both indoor and outdoor guests. Reclaiming unused attic space above the kitchen allowed for a graceful barrel-vaulted ceiling that adds prominence as it opens the space.

Barrel Vaulted Ceiling

Reassigning one of four garage bays into the home’s interior floorplan made way for the mudroom and desk area. The stationary column now disappears between the refrigerator and freezer, concealed behind wood panels. A dome-topped glass cabinet flanks the mantle hood with distinction. Rich walnut accents the flooring, barrel-vaulted ceiling, balusters, and doors. Beveled glass and hand painted tiles add artistic touches to an original, well-crafted and highly functional kitchen.

Award-Winning Naperville Custom Kitchen Remodel

The homeowner couldn't be more pleased with the results. “Our kitchen and first floor of our home has been transformed into a sophisticated and elegant area that is ideal for entertaining and everyday living,” she says. “I could have done this project on my own and it would have been ‘nice,’ but with the help of Gladys and Drury Design, it has become a spectacular, functional and comfortable show place that suits all of our needs.
Award-Winning Hinsdale Designer Master Bath Remodel Case Study

Custom double sink marble vanity surrounded by natural stone tile

Dormers, low ceilings and awkward spaces made this compact bath a designer’s challenge. The original pink and white bathroom was extremely dated. The homeowner, renowned Chicago interior designer, Maryilin Aikins was looking for a fresh, new look. The layout of the space needed to stay the same because of the ceiling lines and existing plumbing locations. For her, it was more about the use of materials, textures and lighting to create a new look for the space.

The first challenge was the space’s narrowness. The new vanity was placed on the same wall as before, yet the chrome and acrylic legs holding up the marble vanity gives the space a new openness. To make up for the storage lost below the vanity due to the use of the open decorative legs, wall and base cabinets go floor to ceiling on either side of the vanity. These cabinets frame the vanity area like two furniture pieces.

The additional raised ledge behind the sinks adds counter space and also helps emphasize the shape and edge detail on the vanity top as it protrudes past the adjacent cabinets.

Make up area flanked by cabinetry for additional storage and laundry hamper

A small makeup area is nestled below the existing window in the dormer area, and two functional cabinets flank the window below the lowered ceiling. One cabinet is loaded top to bottom with 10 customized jewelry pullouts. The cabinet to the left is half laundry hamper pull-out and half linen storage—providing the personal details the homeowner desired inside the room’s updated, fresh look.

This design is all about tile, textures and patterns. The polished marble mosaic tiles on the floor are laid out in a rug pattern accentuating the shape of the space. Behind the vanity area are honed matching marble subway tiles with more polished mosaic tiles of a smaller size surrounding the tile framed mirrors.

A coordinating tile design is carried through into the shower area. The floral-designed wallpaper adds another patterned element to the overall design. The white cabinetry and white marble countertops soften the overall look of the space while tying all of the elements together. The end result is a very soft, romantic, calming retreat-like space.

"I loved working with Gail Drury and her team to create a unique and contemporary version of a Victorian bathroom,” says Ms. Akins of Marilyn Aikins Interiors describing the award-winning bath project. “I advise working with both a bath designer and an interior designer to get the best results".

Naperville Master Bath Remodel Turns Home into Spa

Fourteen years after purchasing their home, this couple was ready to transform their tired master bath into a rejuvenating in-home spa center. Their vision for their master bath renovation included:

Create a spa-like environment

A timeless design

Year round comfort - a warm bathroom during winter, and a cool bathroom during summer

Platform Tub Goes and Steam Shower Expands

To make this transformation possible, several major changes needed to happen first. After removing a large platform tub, both of the biggest challenges in this project were in the shower area. Each solution required serious re-engineering.

Reconfiguring The Floor Plan Made Room For the Steam Shower with Mulitple Sprays

To expand the original shower’s tiny footprint, the frame needed to extend beyond the original wall and ceiling. Then, the ceiling for the steam shower needed to be lowered to fit with the vaulted ceiling. Width was also an issue as was placing a tub and shower on the back wall with a large existing window. Working in such a tight space required many precise measurements, creative problem solving, and careful installations.

Master Bath Design Fulfills Wish List

The new master bath incorporated all all items on the client's wish list: more storage, a floor with radiant heating, an integrated entertainment system with a TV and stereo speakers, a steam shower with body sprays, a towel warmer and a spa-inspired look.

“We are still just as excited about the bathroom as the day it was completed,” says the homeowner. “Our designer, Tina Muller, was fun to work with and has a great eye for design. Drury Design has skilled craftsmen and the entire staff seemed to genuinely care about the project and wanted the best for all their clients.”

Elegant Bath Design Compliments Home Decor

To achieve an elegant and soft look to match the home’s décor, the homeowner selected creamy white cabinetry with a warm glaze from Grabill Cabinetry. We exchanged the built-in linen cabinet for a striking custom cherry armoire to house storage along with the television and stereo systems.

Ceramic Subway Tile Ties Design Together

Hand-glazed ceramic subway tile in the chair rail and baseboards sets off the Calcutta tile floors. A rhomboid pattern made of Calcutta gold forms the shower floor.

End Result: Luxury Master Bath

The spa-inspired luxurious amenities include heated floors, remote controlled Velux skylight, a computerized shower system, a steam machine and a warming drawer for towels and bathrobes. The end result is a luxury bath equipped with everything needed for a total spa experience!

"We really like the new amenities in our master bath - the heated floor, the Velux skylight with the built in blinds, keypad, ability to easily open and close window and the programmable multiple shower heads in the shower"

&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br/&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Created with &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href="http://www.flickrslideshow.com" mce_href="http://www.flickrslideshow.com"&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;flickr slideshow&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;.&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/p&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;
Ovation Cabinetry's New Amenity Line Provides Beauty, Quality and Value

Drury Design is pleased to introduce Amenity, a new line of cabinets from Ovation Cabinetry. Beauty, quality, and selection are just some of its features, but those are standard for Ovation.

What makes it special? Amenity offers a wide array of door styles, wood species, and timeless finishes – all at an affordable price. This makes Amenity one of the best values in Chicago for traditional or transitional kitchen design.

Amenity features plywood construction and 5/8" dovetailed drawer boxes with self-closing motion

Ovation has long been known for quality construction, innovative design, and limitless customization. While the Amenity line follows the same philosophy of quality and creativity, the customizations have been scaled down. This simple modification provides higher efficiencies in manufacturing, making a lower price possible.

The result is that your cabinets can have more of those special features you thought you may not be able to afford. Plywood construction, 5/8” dovetailed drawer boxes with self-closing motion, and a large selection of convenience accessories are standard amenities. Beautiful stains with glazes and a variety of painted colors provide a very custom look at a manageable price with little compromise. Stop by our studio to see the endless possibilities of Amenity by Ovation, or check out the Amenity brochure here.

"This is an outstanding option for homeowners looking for value but do not want to sacrifice design, beauty or function. This line even includes beautiful inset cabinetry. And Ovation finishes, both the stain and paint color options are outstanding. Amenity is perfect for Chicago area homeowners who are looking for an excellent cabinetry value to remodel their kitchen. And with all its available options, this will work well in traditional or transitional kitchen design". Drury Designer, Janice Teague, CKD / CBD.

Traditional Kitchen for an Entertaining Aurora Suburban Home

Aurora Kitchen Before Remodel

Traditional Kitchen for an Entertaining Aurora Suburban Home

This traditional kitchen remodel in Aurora, just west of Naperville, Illinois was a real design challenge. The existing kitchen was small, dated and poorly lit. The homeowners were looking for a fresh, multi-fold functional - traditional kitchen layout. A two-cook design was a must for a family where the husband does most of the cooking with his wife always there to help out.

Entertaining is frequent in this home and a wine cooler needed to be included in the design. The home was fairly large and the kitchen just didn't seem to fit the spaciousness of the rest of the home. The owners were also looking for a rustic, casual retreat feel.

What was our Client-Focused Design™ goal?

"We really wanted a more functional space (i.e., better flow, more lighting, etc.) that included a professional range. We also wanted to have a customized look that reflected more of who we are."

Functional Kitchen Work Space

Space was gained by moving the kitchen table into an adjacent area, previously used as a sitting room. The left wall to the main sink was lengthened to make the additional space acquired, feel as if it had always been a part of the kitchen. The large meandering island fills up the space where the table use to reside. A raised snack bar helps to break up the space with the open shelf on the back side to create a more interesting focal point when entering the room.

The placement of the sink, wine cooler and trash compactor at the end of the island creates a separate work area doubling as a prep sink or bar for entertaining. The butcher block was strategically placed on the other end of the island directly across from the range area to create a second prep area for the main cook.

Traditional Kitchen with Functional Work Space

Kitchen Lighting and Floor Design

The original small window looked out onto a screened-in porch was enlarged to let more light into the dark room. The search for the perfect floor culminated in the choice of a multi-colored rustic yellow slate, which brought in just the right amount of color and movement to the space.

The stone hood was designed using the same stones the homeowner had recently used on the fireplace across the room—tying the entire space together. The backsplash tile and spice niches inside the stone hood add both decorative accent and cooking functionality. The black distressed island with the tall pantry gave this homeowner the the rustic casual, traditional kitchen design they were looking to achieve in their home.

But How Did the Kitchen Design Turn Out?

We asked our homeowners after they had been into the kitchen for awhile – how it was working out for them. Did we meet their goals for functionality, lighting and entertaining? Here’s what they shared with us.

Can you describe your remodeled kitchen in a sentence or two?

"How about in a word or two: breathtaking, gorgeous. It turned out just as we envisioned it...a melding of Mountain Living and Napa Valley Style that has a total "WOW-factor" and gets compliments from all our visitors."

What product or features do you like the most?

"Well, we disagree on this one. "The cook" loves the professional Wolf range and the vented hood with the stone surround. I love how all the design elements (i.e., cabinetry, hardware, flooring, countertops, stonework) all fit together perfectly!"

After going thru this process do you have any advice for someone remodeling their kitchen?

"Come to your first design session prepared. Do your homework and have a good idea about what you want; bring pictures of rooms that appeal to you and design features you have seen elsewhere that you might like to incorporate in your remodel. Check out appliance choices thoroughly not only for features, but how those features are incorporated into each appliance to make sure they work for you."

Any additional comments...?

"Gail (Drury) was great at listening to our ideas and converting almost all of them into a beautiful and functional design that was just what we had in mind."

U-Shape Kitchen Remodel Layout

Glen Ellyn Cape Cod Kitchen U-Shape Kitchen Remodel

Glen Ellyn L-Shaped Kitchen Before Remodel

Built in the 1920s, this Cape Cod home boasts vintage molding and features that are the envy of many. But it is also limited by small, chopped up spaces that are typically distinct from other rooms of the home. The Glen Ellyn homeowners wanted to remain in the home, during their kitchen remodeling project and turn their pass-through kitchen into a space with ample storage. Expansive space and enough room to cook, chat and serve as the heart of the home for this busy family of five.

Increase Kitchen Functionality

On top of the client’s wish list was increasing the storage, counter top space, and overall functionality of the kitchen. The family also wanted to create a less intrusive “walkway” between the basement stairs and the living room than through the middle of the kitchen, as well as, gain a pantry. All of this these requests allowed us to bring in some “interesting” features.

New Kitchen Design Layout

Changing the layout from an L-shaped kitchen to a U-shaped kitchen and removing the non-functional chimney, running from the basement to the second floor, created an “aisle” by the wall so the traffic no longer goes through the kitchen. This reconfiguration also allowed for a couple of seats at the end of the U and stools tucked in below the countertop. This gave ample room for family members and/or guests to commune with the cook. The interesting new features included, window openings to the dining room, a new pantry area, an open bookcase for cookbooks, and a corner for a message center complete with a framed cork board. The workable areas transformed this kitchen from frustrating to functional.

Glen Ellyn U-Shape Kitchen After Remodel

Kitchen Design Elements

Dark chocolate glass back splash tiles, walnut bead board accents and blown glass pendant lights hung at different heights to complete the jewelry of the kitchen. Subtle, yet functional design features completed the look and feel the family had for envisioned for their kitchen.
