What fascinates us about this large kitchen remodel? Three things: The design is inspired by Scottish architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh; this kitchen is in a Chicago loft that looks out on the skyline; and this is the second time Brigitte’s designed for these truly visionary homeowners.

Award-Winning Large Kitchen Design Details

From top to bottom, this kitchen reflects the homeowners’ love of the Arts and Crafts era. Inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an Arts & Crafts pioneer. This design in a Chicago loft condo balances historically accuracy with today’s modern conveniences and the latest cooking technology.

Brigitte’s design features a beautiful, mellow toned quarter sawn oak for the bulk of the cabinetry with black, hickory cabinets as accents. Authentic Motawi tiles bring in beautiful, rustic Arts and Crafts colors in mustard yellows, greens, flat blacks, and rich reds.

A wrap-around, built-in banquette easily seats eight, but could accommodate up to 12 or 14 people. Storage drawers under the seats maximize every inch of space.

To aid in the efficiency of entertaining guests, a secondary kitchen/wet bar leads directly into the dining room and living room. This area provides an additional work space for a caterer with an extra oven, wine storage and floor to ceiling cabinetry to tuck away fine china, crystal and wine glasses.

Arts and Crafts Architecture and Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868 – 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, and water color artist. A designer in the Arts and Crafts Movement, Mackintosh was also the main exponent of Art Nouveau in Scotland. Described by critics as the “European counterpart of Frank Lloyd Wright,” as well as a prophet of modernism and an apostle of Art Nouveau, his work does not fit into any comfortable niche. Mackintosh took his inspiration from Scottish traditions and blended them with the flourish of Art Nouveau and the simplicity of Japanese forms. His most famous contribution may be the Glasgow School of Art itself.

What fascinates us most about this bath remodel? Three things: The teak ceiling. The “pebble” rug. And, we applaud the homeowners for having the vision to create an in-home spa to revitalize them and keep them at their best for their family of three youngsters.

Award-Winning Chicago Area Before and After Master Bath Design

A busy young couple with three very small children, the homeowners dreamed of replacing their cold and cavernous bathroom with a new bathroom to become their in-home oasis. In an ultimate relaxation space, they pictured a modern, but warm environment with natural materials and a private shower retreat.

Brigitte designed a soothing, neutral color palette using only natural materials including slate tile, a “rug” of pebbles, walnut cabinetry, a teak ceiling, and limestone counters; all contribute to the calming environment. An elegant soaking tub frames the view from a prominent picture window. The private shower is the perfect place to recharge or unwind with six body jets, one stationary shower head, one large rain head, one hand-held shower, and an integrated steam unit.

Design Objectives:

Create a unique and modern spa-like retreat
Separate his & her vanity areas
Create a private shower retreat area

Design Challenges:

Vaulted ceiling with poor ventilation
Excessively large space that felt cavernous and cold
Lack of storage for such a large space

2013 NKBA Design Competition "Best Before and After Bath Remodel"

Design Solutions

Re-worked ventilation system and increased number of fans
Created an enclosed and very private steam shower area with body jets and large rain head, as well as a heated floor in the shower for the ultimate shower spa experience
Allowed for his & her vanities backing up to the shower on one side and the water closet on the other side to creating privacy, and personal storage
Used modern, yet, textural/earthy materials such as slate, stacked stone and natural walnut to convey warmth and a serene environment
Increased storage by adding open niches flanking the tub, floating storage cabinets separate linen closet, as well as drawers under each sink utilizing U-shaped drawers to allow for plumbing

Brigitte has won numerous awards for her work, including a first-place in the NKBA Midwest Design Vision Awards. She says, “From the time I was very young, I’ve always been drawn to art and architecture. As I developed this interest, I saw the perfect opportunity to combine the two in the field of cabinetry design. Form and function, theme and variation, are my starting points for every home. Combining exterior aesthetics with interior elements and client tastes creates a unique space each and every time.”   Brigitte graduated from Hope College in Holland, MI with a bachelor’s degree in communications and served as an Adjunct Professor of Kitchen and Bath design for Harrington Institute of Design in Chicago.

"Soothing Harmony", Master Bath Design Feature - From Better Homes and Gardens, Beautiful Kitchens & Baths, Summer 2013

A busy couple’s vacation time at 5-star resorts fueled the inspiration for home design studio Drury Design in the remodel of an outdated master bath, featured in this summer’s issue of Beautiful Kitchens & Baths.

The deliberate juxtaposition of glass, granite, white marble and espresso-stained cabinetry created a sleek, modern and spacious, spa-like environment in this Chicago area client’s master bath remodel.

Lead Designer Gail Drury completed the look with soothing colors, floor-to-ceiling windows, an overflow-style tub with a gentle waterfall effect, and a pulsating, multi-head shower. Glass played an important role in this expansive remodel, with glass partitions replacing solid walls, clear tempered glass shower doors, and etched tempered glass enclosing the toilet area for privacy.

A marble mosaic mural in the shower’s granite-covered walls became a focal point in the bathroom. The happy result, Drury said, is “a treat for the eyes and a retreat for the senses.”

NKBA Selects Drury Design Kitchen and Bath as Some of Year's Best

2013 NKBA Design Competition Kitchen Design Finalist by Brigitte Fabi, CMKD of Drury Design

Two of Drury Design’s recent client projects by Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer, Brigitte Fabi were selected as finalists in the 2013 NKBA Design Contest - (see the coverage from Kitchen and Bath Design News magazine here). One kitchen remodel in the large kitchen category and one bath remodel in the large bath category. Both projects are remodels from the Chicago area.

2013 NKBA Design Competition

The NKBA Design Competition is held annually. For 2013, some 500 submissions were received from across North America, representing the best in design, and were evaluated by a panel of eight highly respected judges in the kitchen and bath industry. Projects in 6 different categories were scored on safety and ergonomics, design planning and principals, creativity and presentation. The final winning designers will be announced during the NKBA’s Kitchen & Bath Industry Show, (KBIS) this month.

These honors mark the third such distinction for Brigitte, and the eleventh in the past 15 years for Drury Design, including a third place honor for a Glen Ellyn kitchen design and remodel in 2009. All total, Drury Design has received over 50 design awards since 1998.

Natural and Recycled Vanity Surfaces for Bathroom Countertops

In a bathroom, every element is of equal importance – the shower, toilet, sink, floor, lighting and vanity share the same stage, but the bathroom vanity gets the most use. So while the countertop must harmonize with the rest of the bathroom design, you should choose a bathroom vanity surface that is durable, beautiful, easy to clean, and of course, reflects your personality.

There are many surfaces to choose from for your bathroom vanity from natural stone slabs to green materials to more unusual surfaces like concrete or recycled glass. Here we highlight some of our favorites that we choose from when we design bathrooms and powder rooms.

Natural Stone Vanities

Granite – Granite’s natural timeless beauty combined with its durability makes it an excellent choice for a bathroom vanity surface. When sealed properly, granite resists mold and mildew– perfect for a high traffic bathroom, but can scratch.

Marble – Marble is the classic bathroom countertop surface. Often considered a luxury, it’s worth the cost if you want a timeless bathroom vanity that will bring magnificence to your bathroom or powder room. Marble is not practical for all applications and homeowner however, and requires regular maintenance and care unless you don’t mind it developing a patina from use over time.

Limestone - Similar to Marble, limestone is attractive to many homeowners because its naturally light coloring helps keep a bathroom bright. It is also similar in appearance to marble, but is less expensive. Limestone may be quarried from the United States, so if you are looking for a local source for your surface, limestone could be ideal.

Soapstone – Soapstone is a natural, stain-resistant material that is so durable, when oiled regularly, you can use practically any cleaner on it without affecting the surface. Since bathroom countertops get so much use, it’s an excellent and affordable natural stone for the vanity. It also requires maintenance, and should be oiled to keep a "like new" appearance.

Engineered stone or "Quartz" tops require little maintenance and are perfect for bath room remodels

Green / Renewable and Alternative Vanities

Acrylic - An acrylic countertop is a man-made solid surface and is a lower cost alternative. They are non-porous, so they don’t require sealing or resealing, and they are naturally mold and mildew resistant - making them a practical choice for your bathroom vanity top.

Corian – Corian is not new, but it stands the test of time. Made from an engineered, solid surface, Corian is available in a wide range of patterns, tones and even custom colors, is durable, and is stain-resistant. It will scratch, but the surface can be renewed.

Engineered Stone - or sometimes referred to as Quartz, is a combination of ground stone and resin. These combine quartz as the major filler along with resins, epoxies or cements. These materials make for good countertops as they are less porous than natural stone and are more stain and scratch resistant - hence need less care. Brands include - Cambria, Silestone and Caesar Stone. They are produced in slabs and are fabricated much like granite or marble. They can provide a more modern look with many solid color choices.

Gilasi Recycled Glass – Gilasi uses locally sourced materials from right here in Chicago to create countertops made from recycled glass. Composed of 85% recycled materials, choosing Gilasi Recycled Glass for your bathroom vanity is a step in the green direction. This material needs ongoing maintenance as well. Stainless Steel – Stainless steel may sound like an unusual choice for a bathroom counter, but take another look! Textured stainless steel, available in colors and patterns, will bring a modern, bold look to your bathroom or powder room.

Small Kitchen Redesign - Making the Most of a Small Kitchen

Feeling cramped in your kitchen? Wishing you had the space that a large kitchen affords? Even if you don’t have the ability to expand the footprint of your kitchen, with a few design changes you can increase the efficiency, improve the function, and “grow” your small kitchen. There are many ways to redesign a small kitchen with minimal architectural changes. Here are some of our favorites.

Light colors make a small kitchen appear larger in size

Choose light colors – Take advantage of white and light colors to help your kitchen look bigger. Choose light colored walls, cabinets and countertops to expand your space.

Buy compact appliances – Compact appliances are a small kitchen space saver! Consider traditional refrigerators instead of side by side models, dishwasher drawers (or skip the dishwasher altogether if you are in a very small or galley kitchen) and compact ranges.

Add under cabinet lighting – Brighten your kitchen with under cabinet lighting. By illuminating the dark recesses of your kitchen you will immediately add volume to your countertops.

Install a mirrored backsplash – A mirrored backsplash will create the illusion that your kitchen is much larger than it really is by reflecting the area in front of it.

Replace cabinets with open shelves, especially up high – Cabinet doors shrink your wall space, closing in your kitchen. Open up your walls by removing the cabinet doors to expose open shelving. Open shelving in high places will also make the ceiling feel higher, making your kitchen appear much bigger all around.

Placing glass door cabinets on a wall will help to create a sense of openess in a tight kitchen layout

Replace solid wood cabinet doors with glass doors – If you prefer your cabinets to have doors, replace solid wood ones with glass. Frosted glass will hide the contents of your cabinets but still help to open up your walls.

Install large floor tiles on a diagonal – Large floor tiles will make your floors look bigger and placing them on a diagonal will carry your eyes from corner to corner instead of wall to wall. Your eyes will be tricked into thinking the area is bigger than it actually is.

Clean lines, glass cabinet doors and tile, and sleek surfaces create the appeal of this compact transitional kitchen design

Design with clean lines to reduce clutter – Traditional design is not for small kitchens. The fancy woodwork and trim create clutter which reduces space. Instead, redesign your small kitchen using clean lines and smooth surfaces to let your eyes scan unbroken across the kitchen, expanding the look and feel of your space.

If you do have the ability to alter or move interior or exterior walls, we recommend the following redesign elements:

Add a window to the outdoors – Windows let in the best kind of light – natural light that brightens your entire room. And a bright kitchen is a big kitchen.

Pass through windows into the adjacent dining room add a sense of openess and detail in this kitchen design

Add a pass through window – If you can, add a pass through window in a wall that separates the kitchen from the rest of the house. Even a small window will create visual continuity, making the room seem large, airy and open.

Start off with two experienced designers, throw in a very artistic homeowner with a small cramped kitchen, add on lots of room to grow and the options are almost limitless.

In addition to opening up a cramped space, top kitchen design priorities included incorporating an eclectic, transitional look by combining traditional and contemporary design elements. A hidden message center was also a must.

Because of the sprawling space, created as part of the addition, we decided to create three separate work zones for cooking prep, clean up and a breakfast bar.

Incorporating load-bearing posts was one of the kitchen design challenges.

Transitional Kitchen Design Challenges

The challenges were many. The wish list was long: a kitchen equipped with high-tech appliances, stocked with storage in a large walk in pantry, accented with stained glass panels, and unified by a large, built-in banquette. But first, the designers had to work around these design challenges:

Dissolve load bearing posts into design
Transfer coat closet into lower level new mud room space
Locate pantry in a convenient location with access hidden from view

Transitional Kitchen Design Solutions

After making their way through the challenges, the designers went to work on adding form and function in three work zones.

Creating its own work triangle, the cooking zone has its own separate prep sink across from the range with easy access to the refrigerator. A clean up area within the large island is strategically placed close to the built-in banquette, which is designed around the structural posts.

For convenience, the breakfast bar hosts a separate sink, coffee area, refrigerator drawers and an icemaker across from the banquette.

Transitional Kitchen Design Features

Red in the small island adds a surprise artful effect to the off white and espresso stained kitchen.

In the dining room, the wine bar’s two-sided access streams in foyer light; adding a more traditional feel to the transitional, borderline contemporary, kitchen. Other features include:

Large hammered zinc custom hood creates a focal point on the range wall
Red high gloss lacquered island creates a lowered baking area
Hammered pewter tile inserts frame the corners of the large island
Two fabric covered pocket doors hide a message center filled with amenities
Custom lattice doors on the back of the banquette create a focal point from the family room side
Tile niches frame the refrigerator area and entrance to the pantry
Grabill custom cabinetry in maple and lyptus lends a signature look
Wolf and Sub Zero appliances add high-tech performance and high volume capacity

When asked to describe the concept Gail said, “A large addition grew the room from tiny to spacious. We started with a tiny, outdated kitchen. With an addition, the room became a gracious kitchen with multiple work zones for different activities such as entertaining, relaxing at the breakfast bar, baking for the holidays, doing homework, and of course, everyday family use.“

Flanked by mosaic tile niches, the hidden pantry door sits between the Sub-Zero fridge & freezer.

The unique tile design sets this area apart from the rest. Other design details:

Recessed coat closet into an area below breakfast bar with false matching fronts
Light catching stained glass windows block the driveway view
Hidden pantry door is housed between the Sub Zero refrigerators
Conceal driveway view while letting light into the space

Kitchen Design Backsplash Trends

Backsplashes are the front and center of today’s kitchen designs. Brigitte Fabi, a Drury Design interior designer from Chicago, says that she’s seeing “cabinetry and counter tops becoming more of a backdrop to create striking designs with tile, paint and other elements that are easily changed out and updated.”

Once an optional afterthought, kitchen backsplashes are a mandatory part of a whole kitchen redesign. They bring form and function to a countertop, providing wall protection from stove, sink, and countertop messes while creating a visual transition from counter to cabinet.

Glass Tiles – Glass tiles are by far the strongest trend for 2013. Glass tiles bring brightness, color, and clean lines to a kitchen. They are easy to install and easy to care for. Our Chicago-based designer, Terry Kenny explains that the latest trends in design are “simple lines with contrasting colors, subtle elements of luxury through color and texture instead of carvings and fussy details.”

Glass tile backsplashes meet these criteria, and are available in so many styles, that they easily bring out the personality of the homeowner. Glass tile backsplashes are ideal for a Transitional kitchen design – also one of the biggest trends we are seeing right now. For a completely seam-free backsplash, solid pieces of glass are also an option.

Mosaic Tiles – Mosaic tiles in a combination of glass, ceramic, and stone are exciting new trends for 2013. Providing a mix of clear and opaque tile on a backsplash creates an unrivaled depth and dimension. Mosaics can be a repeating pattern or custom designed, allowing you to find the exact combination of color, texture, and material that is best for your kitchen design.

Marble or Granite – Stone backsplashes create a bright elegance to any kitchen. The clean lines and classic beauty provide a timeless look. Easy to clean and maintain (especially as a backsplash), polished or honed marble look stunning with dark cabinets and stainless steel appliances.

White Porcelain or Ceramic Tile – White is the key word here. White kitchens, always a popular choice, are becoming even more prominent in kitchen redesign. Porcelain and ceramic tile offer a vintage look that are affordable, easy to care for, and come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes, making them a perfect surface for a kitchen backsplash.

Interview with Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer, Brigitte Fabi

We recently interviewed one of Drury Design’s award winning kitchen and bath designers, Brigitte Fabi, CMKBD, who has been designing interior spaces for nearly 20 years. As a Senior Designer at Drury Design, Brigitte concentrates on form and function as well as theme and variation when she helps customers redesign their bath or kitchen. She shared some insight into her influences, her methodology and future trends in custom kitchens and baths.

Drury Design: What influences your own personal style?

Brigitte: I always look for something a little bit out of the ordinary. Once I have an idea for a space, I try to repeat that theme in subtly different ways.

Drury Design: What special item(s) would you recommend to make a design project reflect the personalities of the homeowners?

Brigitte: Special design elements are different for each of our clients and designs. Figuring out how to enhance the client’s lifestyle is priority number one. It is my goal to design kitchens and baths that accentuate the homeowner’s enjoyment of their home and the way they live. Then as a designer my job is to work with all that is available based on the client’s goals – existing floor plan and architectural elements and a broad array of cabinetry and materials to design and plan out the optimal new space with the homeowners input.

Drury Design: What are your favorite elements of a kitchen? Bath?

Brigitte: My favorite element in the kitchen would have to be the hearth or hood area. This space allows for the greatest amount of creativity and interest and is usually the focal point of any design. For the bathroom, I would have to say it's the shower, simply because this is such a personal space, an area of complete relaxation and privacy, and therefore allows a very personal component to the overall bath design.

Drury Design: What trends are you seeing in custom kitchen and bath design for 2012?

Brigitte: Clean, simple lines, in neutral colors. Materials that are easy to care for are also in greater demand than ever before. I see cabinetry and counter tops becoming more of a backdrop to create striking designs with tile, paint and other elements that are easily changed out and updated. In bathrooms, I think the trend will be towards more luxurious showers and larger spaces than ever before. Again, tile is going to play a large role in creating unique spaces, while the cabinetry and fixtures will be simple and easy to clean.

Drury Design: How do you learn what your clients expect in a new kitchen or bath?

Brigitte: By listening and observing. I always prefer to meet a client for the first time in their own home. This way I can get a feel for how they live, what their preferences are, and what underlying needs may be required that perhaps the client isn't even aware that he/she needs. By asking open-ended questions, I try to get the client to open up and discuss more than just what they want their kitchen or bath to "look like". The aesthetics is the easy part. It's the ergonomics based on how the kitchen or bath is used that is more difficult to assess. If I can get at the heart of the client's needs, then the beauty comes automatically.

Drury Design: What can a client do to prepare for their first meeting with you?

Brigitte: I think it's vital that I see the home as it truly is when they aren't expecting visitors. I realize everyone wants their house to look tidy when strangers come to visit, but sometimes it's easier to assess the true needs if I am able to see for myself their lack of storage, or need for a shoe rack. Of course, it's always a great help to look through pictures of items the client likes as well, but it's just as important to see the things they don't like. Sometimes that tells me more about themselves than anything else.

How would you describe this project’s concept?

A large addition grew the room from tiny to spacious. We started with a tiny, outdated kitchen. With an addition, the room became a gracious kitchen with multiple work zones for different activities such as entertaining, relaxing at the breakfast bar, baking for the holidays, doing homework, and of course, and everyday family use.

What makes this kitchen a standout?

Variety: in multiple islands as well as different use of materials and finishes from white to vivid red to espresso.

How did the interior designer, Ginny Blasco, contribute to this project’s success?

As a team, we worked together over several months to achieve the perfect design. Ginny selected most all of the materials; we collaborated together on the design and function of this addition.

Leaded glass windows surround the cooking center and allows natural light to frame the area

This is a stunning room. What elements did you incorporate that the interior designer suggested during the design process?

Ginny suggested the leaded glass windows on the sides of the custom hood as a way to let the light in and minimize the view of the drive. So, the leaded glass and metal hood becomes the focal point. A beautiful way to further define the area, Ginny suggested a banquette to seperate the eating area from the family room. Open shelves and latticework doors on the family room side add a decorative touch. The use of different materials, from high gloss finishes to heavily grained woods, adds interest and dimension to this eclectic space. The materials complement each other nicely while contributing to making a statement.

Why Warrantees Matter

When choosing a qualified firm to design, equip and install your new kitchen or bathroom there are many factors to consider – design, cabinetry options, reputation, costs, references, and last but not least, warrantees on workmanship and installation of products. Warrantees are often the last on a homeowner's list of contractors’ qualifications. But, based on the complexity and level of investment – shouldn’t it be one of the first considerations?

How would you describe this project’s concept?

"The overall concept of this large addition was to create a space for a busy, growing family to congregate in a space adjacent to the living area. Comfort and functionality were the top priorities for this large family's kitchen but they also wanted a space that was defined by elegance and spaciousness."

"The beautiful custom metal hood, framed in painted woodwork and cabinetry and the spacious, high ceilings are the focal points of this kitchen."

Why do you think Trends chose this project as one of the Trends Top 50 Kitchens Designs?

"The unique design of the “hearth” or range area is what makes this kitchen truly special. The architectural woodwork details of the ceiling with the tray areas and indirect lighting also add an elegant touch that you don’t frequently see in kitchen design."

How did your relationship with the interior designer contribute to this project’s success?

"Janie Petkus, the interior designer, was very involved in this project. I have worked with Janie before and we worked together to create the optimal layout, making sure the space functioned well. We strategically placed cabinet accessories and all of the modern day appliances."

Gail contributed to the engineering of the space as both symmetry and fit were critical to this design from the beam layout to the cabinetry layout. Ms. Petkus was responsible for creating a cohesive design with all material and finish selections. She also contributed input in the layout of the space.

"We started the process with four preliminary layouts in preparation of determining which one which worked best for the client. We actually combined a couple of the preliminary layouts in the end. Janie was very in-tune to the client’s needs and has an amazing sense of style and made this project beautiful. This was definitely a team effort," says Gail.

What do the readers/media need to know about this design?

"Everything in this design was custom made to fit this particular client's needs and desires."

Elements of Transitional Kitchen Design

The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA)’s annual survey determined that the Transitional kitchen design is the most common type of kitchen in 2012, and we expect that trend to continue in 2013 and beyond.

Though many homeowners may have seen transitional kitchens, they may not recognize the details that configure a transitional kitchen design. Transitional kitchens borrow design elements from traditional and contemporary designs – often blending natural colored materials with sleek manufactured products. Picture the simple lines of a contemporary kitchen combined with the natural warmth of a traditional kitchen.

A transitional kitchen design provides flexibility – bringing the best of both classic styling and modern elements into one room. The result is an inviting, yet clean look that welcomes your guests, providing a comfortable, classy environment for entertaining.

The following are examples of transitional design elements in today’s kitchen:

Stainless steel appliances are often used in transitional kitchen design

Appliances: Appliances are usually stainless steel, but may mimic the cabinetry by adding panel fronts to kitchen appliances to create continuity throughout the kitchen without a visual break.

Countertops & Backsplashes: Natural stone is the perfect element for a transitional kitchen surface. Choosing marble, granite or limestone for your countertops and backsplashes will add warmth to your space. However, choose stone and tile designs and countertop edges that aren’t too ornate, and steer clear of busy, contrasting listelles and medallions that could interrupt the design flow.

Cabinets: Cabinets in a transitional kitchen will have a minimalist style to them with simple lines and minamalist hardware or no hardware at all.

Floors: Floors can be wood, tile or other natural materials like bamboo in a transitional kitchen.
