They found their years of working together made for an excellent bridge partnership. Word got around of their prowess at bidding and winning tricks.

General Eisenhower, an avid bridge player, invited the two of them to play at Quarters One[2] from time to time. The joke around Fort Myer was that Eisenhower was planning to snatch them because one of the unwritten qualifications for serving on Eisenhower’s staff was an officer’s ability to play a decent game of bridge.

Phil remembered when Ike told them he had “augmented” his meager cadet stipend playing poker at West Point, but the card game did not sharpen his mind like bridge, a game of “strategy, percentages, and bluff,” the general said. Ike considered anything less than total concentration to be a sacrilege to the game of bridge, but he could become quite animated during the playing of hands.

His wife, Mamie, would serve refreshments for the men as they sipped beverages and chain-smoked during their spirited games, which were always serious competitions.

One time, Mamie bragged to Phil that a world-class bridge expert said her husband was a “fine player.” When Ike was stationed in the Philippines in the mid-1930s, he would play with the country’s president, Manuel Quezon, who called him a “bridge wizard.”

“Do you play bridge with the general?” Phil asked.

“Rarely,” she replied. “He yells at me when I make mistakes,” she added, winking.[2]

[2] Quarters 1 at Fort Myer is a historic house on the grounds of Joint Base Myer–Henderson Hall in Arlington, Virginia. Built in 1899, it has been the residence of Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Army since 1910, notably including George C. Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972 and is a contributing element to the Fort Myer Historic District.

You Version writes this about this new devotion:

Part 2 “Order Your Steps 10 Days to Focus, Guidance, and Wise Decisions

How do you know what step to take next? God rarely reveals the entire journey? He invites you to walk with Him one step at a time.

Over these 10 devotionals, you’ll discover how to trust God when the path is unclear, discern His voice in everyday decisions, and walk forward with faith rather than fear.

This is not about perfect decisions. It’s about faithful direction.

This is Part 2 of 12 in “The Intentional Life: 120 Days to Clarity, Calling, and a Life That Lasts” series.

Here’s the entire upcoming series: with the approximate 2026 release dates

writing, there just seems to be no way to get me out.

As Phil became more of a recluse, he lost his appetite for food and friendship. He contemplated seeing a psychiatrist, but with Ross’ encouragement, he met with one of the post chaplains. He found the visits surprisingly encouraging, similar to what he experienced during his chaplain visits at Lawson.

Ross also came by daily and recommended they begin attending the weekly Protestant service and get out together more often for social events around the post. Meeting new people lifted Phil’s spirits, and he found his mood improving.

He focused on pleasures that brought him the greatest joy, such as having lunch with Ross on most days and riding Tuckern, usually when his workday was over. He loved feeding and grooming him afterward.

Phil decided that he didn’t like the name Tuckern—too German- sounding to his ears. He played with a few names in his mind.

First, he thought of “Chugalug,” but then decided that he liked “Chugwater” the best.

Something about that name reminded him of the mighty Mississippi River, so Chugwater he became. As his love grew for this Thoroughbred.[2]

1. Settling down in Decatur (and a quiet headline)

The quiet headline first: my breathing is normal at night. O2 levels normal. I’m sleeping better than I have in over two decades. No machines, no supplemental oxygen. The move to Decatur, it turns out, has been part of the medicine.

Barb and I arrived April 16, after 25 years in Colorado Springs (longer than we’ve lived anywhere). We miss our close friends, our church family, and the marriage, discipleship, and Bible study ministries we built there. But the Lord clearly has a new work for us here, and the early signs are encouraging.

Our new home is a farmhouse on a half-acre wooded lot in “Midway Woods,” only a mile from our son Scott, daughter-in-love Jennifer, our granddaughters, church, and town. Delightful is the right word. The unpacking is slow, the new rhythms slower still, but the Lord is kind in the small mercies of a new place.

We’ve also come to love Scott and Jennifer’s church, All Souls Fellowship, within the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC). We’re surprisingly comfortable with the liturgical tradition and the deep sense of worship each week.

The Nicene Creed book, the columns for Colorado Family Physician and Today’s Christian Living, the YouVersion devotional series, the investigation into upgrading Dad’s DSC to an MOH, and a bit of insurance consulting all continue, just at a slower, more relaxed pace. Which feels right for this season.

2. Three early endorsements for my next book, The Creed

Three early endorsements arrived this month, each from a different corner of the Christian writing world: family discipleship, theological journalism, and bestselling fiction. I could not be more grateful:

The basic beliefs of the Christian faith are beautifully expressed in the Nicene Creed. Whether you attend a liturgical church and regularly recite this ancient confession or come from a tradition where you may never have encountered it, this book will help you clearly understand Christianity’s foundational beliefs and how they can transform your daily life. Dr. Larimore brings both theological depth and pastoral warmth to make these timeless truths accessible and relevant. I highly recommend it.

— Gary Chapman PhD, #1 New York Times best-selling author of The 5 Love Languages

Who would have thought that study of the Nicene Creed could come so alive with fresh insights, information, and practical challenges? Dr. Larimore’s lifetime of medical practice and theological study brings together this well-informed unpacking of the bedrock beliefs that unite Christians from all traditions. Simple yet profound, full of wise counsel and well-chosen quotes, it makes core theology refreshingly accessible and relevant.

— Harold Myra, Former CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Christianity Today and author of over 20 books

My friend, “Dr. Walt,” brings to The Creed the same laser-focused attention to thorough detail he brought to both his lifetime in medicine and his celebrated career as an engaging, storytelling author. Best of all, he leaves the cookies on the lower shelf where we laypeople can reach them and savor the delicious accessibility of plainspoken truth. This is a savory treat, regardless of your intellect or theological knowledge.

— Jerry B. Jenkins, #1 New York Times best-selling novelist and biographer — over 200 books published

~~~~~
3. A New Devotional Series — The Intentional Life
I’m thrilled to share that my newest YouVersion series, The Intentional Life: 120 Days to Clarity, Calling, and a Life That Lasts, kicked off May 1. It’s free on the YouVersion App and consists of twelve 10-day devotionals.
For ten years, Barb and I directed a marriage ministry (ReEngage) at our church in Colorado Springs. When we left, our dear friends Joe and Connie Brossard took over as directors and are having a powerful impact.
Recently I received this encouraging note, an unexpected encouragement from the Lord, what we sometimes call a “God kiss”:
Like the physician you are, you administered the medicine of Christ’s message of hope and put us on the path of healing.
We wish you guys the very best in your new home!
I wrote back:
Your note brought tears to my eyes — thank you, brother. But the truth is that Barb and I have always believed that the Holy Spirit and you two did the hard, holy work together — especially you, brother.
You showed up. You stayed at the table when walking away would have been easier. You let the Lord do what only He can do. Barb and I just got to be in the neighborhood when His grace was poured out in and through you two. Wel count that among the great privileges of our lives.
Give [your sweet bride] our deep love. You two are written into our story in ways that won’t fade. With love and so much gratitude of our own,
6. Last month’s happenings
May 7-10, Bryson City, NC. We traveled back to where I first practiced (1981-1985), after my family and sports medicine residencies at Duke, to celebrate the life of my residency partner, practice partner, and best friend, Rick Pyeritz, MD. We were with his precious wife Linda and many of his life-long friends. It was a deeply meaningful weekend, touring familiar places, walking familiar trails, and honoring a man who shaped the early years of my medical life.
May 15-17, Anna Katherine’s graduation. We celebrated with LP4 the high school graduation of our oldest grandchild, Anna Katherine. We were honored that she chose our new home for one of her celebration events. It went very well.
May 27, the Carter Center. Dear friends from Colorado Springs, Dan and Susan Oldfield, visited for a day. The four of us met up with our old friend Sarah Matthews, Senior Associate Director of the Carter Center, for a private tour, including the private offices of Jimmy and Roslyn, which have been kept just as they were when the Carters were alive. We then toured the Carter Museum and Presidential Library. A wonderful day, and well worth a visit if you’re ever in Atlanta.
~~~~~

7. Upcoming

No travel planned for now. We’re still getting settled, getting the yard in shape, and I have several writing projects to carry me into the Atlanta summer.

June 12-19. Barb’s sister Sue, Sue’s daughter Laura, and our daughter Kate will be here visiting and helping with final home decorating (hanging pictures, placing knick-knacks, and so on). We’re so looking forward to our time with them.

On Thursday, May 30, 1946, Memorial Day[1], Phil had his first ceremonial and a small team were assigned to meet President Harry Truman at the White House for a Medal of Honor presentation.[2]

Afterward, the President invited Phil and Ross to ride with him to Arlington National Cemetery for a wreath- laying ceremony at the Tombs. Phil had never seen a United States president before, so this day, especially riding in the presidential limousine, was a highlight for him.

Phil later wrote this to his mother:

As you know, we were quite busy on the 30th and the day before. We were with the President, so we had to look our best. I enjoyed the pomp and circumstance.[3]

My dear friend, Mark Elfstrand, the long-time host of The Morning Ride on Moody Radio Chicago and now the Cultural Affairs Writer at Illinois Family Institute, penned a wonderful Memorial Day remembrance that I thought might bless you on this day, the theme of which should be, “Never Forget!”

… It’s time to remind everyone not to go around saying, “Happy Memorial Day.”

Nice thought on most other holidays. But not this one.

My inspiration for this article is owing to a long time friend, Dr. Walt Larimore.

Perhaps you remember Dr. Walt as a frequent medical guest with Dr. James Dobson on the Focus on the Family radio broadcasts. I’ve enjoyed having Dr. Walt on my radio programs as well.

Today, the good doctor continues to inspire others with regular blog posts. And he’s written an excellent book titled, At First Light: A True World War II Story of a Hero, His Bravery, and an Amazing Horse. It is prose about his father that took over 15 years of researching, writing, and rewriting.

What I will share below is a story from a recent blog post by Dr. Walt. It is titled, “MEMORIAL DAY TRIBUTE – Unforgettable messages from remarkable WWII Heroes.” The edited portions are shared with Dr. Walt’s permission.

Lucian King Truscott Jr. served in WWII between 1943 and 1945. He was one of only two US Army officers to command a division, a corps, and a field army in combat during the war, serving mainly in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO).

On Memorial Day, May 30, 1945, after WWII in Europe was over, Lt. Gen. Lucian Truscott Jr. — then commander of the US Fifth Army, delivered what may well be the most moving and iconic of all Memorial Day addresses. Instead of facing the crowd of dignitaries gathered at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, Truscott turned his back on the audience and delivered an extraordinary apology to the roughly 20,000 American soldiers who were buried there.

It’s worthy to mention that according to historian Nicolaus Mills, there is neither a transcript nor a recording of Truscott’s speech — not even among his official papers at the George C. Marshall Research Library in Virginia. Fortunately, journalists who were there reported on the event.

The famed WWII combat cartoonist Bill Mauldin wrote about Truscott’s speech and called his apology unquestionably memorable. His account went as follows:

“When Truscott spoke he turned away from the visitors and addressed himself to the corpses he had commanded here. It was the most moving gesture I ever saw. It came from a hard-boiled old man who was incapable of planned dramatics.

“The general’s remarks were brief and extemporaneous. He apologized to the dead men for their presence here. He said everybody tells leaders it is not their fault that men get killed in war, but that every leader knows in his heart this is not altogether true.

“He said he hoped anybody here through any mistake of his would forgive him, but he realized that was asking a hell of a lot under the circumstances. . . . he would not speak about the glorious dead because he didn’t see much glory in getting killed if you were in your late teens or early twenties.”

A separate account was filed by the legendary war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Like Mauldin, Pyle was embedded with the men about whom he wrote. According to biographer James Tobin in Ernie Pyle’s War: America’s Witness to World War II, Pyle wrote:

“I couldn’t help but feeling the immensity of the catastrophe that has put men all over the world, millions of us, moving in machine like precision throughout long foreign nights — men who should be comfortably asleep in their own warm beds at home. War makes strange giant creatures out of us little men who inhabit the Earth.”

Many of the people Pyle wrote about never made it home. Neither did he. The Associated Press reported he died on April 18, 1944, after a Japanese machine gun bullet pierced his left temple.

Once again this year, my wife Rhonda and I will seek out a graveyard on Memorial Day to find burial sites of those who willingly served in wars for our country. Many never to return.

It’s a stark reminder of Jesus of Nazareth’s words,

“No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13, HCSB)

What the war dead gave, we can never repay.

To add to Mark’s editorial, here’s a suggestion for parents and grandparents to consider today from my friend Gary Bauer’s “End of the Day” post for this holiday weekend:

You are your children’s most important teacher. They are listening. Explain to your children the price that was paid to stop the evil of fascism and the cancer of Soviet communism.

Tell them why there was a Berlin Wall, what happened at Okinawa, on the beaches of Normandy, at Ground Zero, and over the fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Take a moment to teach your children and grandchildren to love the things we love and to honor the things we honor.

Finally, let’s remind ourselves that liberty is a gift from God and that each generation has paid in flesh and blood to preserve it. As General George Patton said, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived.”

Or, as Jeff Foxworthy wrote on FB:

Today we remember the men and women who didn’t come home. Because of their courage and sacrifice, the rest of us get to enjoy the freedoms we too often take for granted. My prayer today is for the families who still feel that empty seat at the table, and my hope is that we never forget the price that was paid. God bless America.

Amen.
