Finnish designer Maija Puoskari has presented her newest lighting collection at Salone Satellite 2013. Influenced by the natural and sympathetic shapes of acorns, the ‘Terho’ ceiling lamp series includes two different sizes and hat variations. The fixtures are manufactured using opal white glass-blown casings and finnish alder. Conceived to complement ‘Terho’ , the additional ‘Tatti’ table lamps utilize a likewise similar construction, referencing funghi in their form.

“This is a typical Chinese CBD project where the architect is forced to follow the strict local “rules” for commercial developments: several office towers covered in curtain wall glass on top of a commercial podium.

With those fixed premises we tried to give expression and identities to these two elements that you can see everywhere in the no-ending Chinese urban landscape.

The metaphoric expression is very simple: two fat heavy and defined twin objects compressing a slim podium-slab.

The identity of the towers is defined by the round shape edges giving the feeling not being “connected” to the podium and by the glass 3D texture that gives strong personality to the curtain wall façade, acting like a urban dress instead than a urban building elevation.

In contrast with the transparent towers skin the podium is a slim opaque objects that inflects under the pressure of the heavy towers creating an arched main entrance. The podium will contain the commercial malls and parking.

The restaurants and cafes will be located in the lower part of the towers where are connected to each other with a transparent sub-podium that lays on top of the main podium.”

Today, our very own ‘Let’s Patch‘ herb planter arrived at our doorstep. Yay!

Being a supporter of urban agriculture, Vancouver-based inventor Kent Houston is going to launch his project later this week on Kickerstarter.com and asked us for our opinion.

For people like me that don’t have a green thumb, the planter’s concept sounds pretty promising: “Let’s Patch is an easy, worry–free method of growing fresh herbs and veggies. Perfect for city dwellers it’s ideal for any space.”

Accordingly, ‘Let’s Patch’ is going to revolutionize indoor gardening. “Growing your food is no longer a thing of the past – it’s the future. To help make our future more sustainable, we’ve designed a product that let’s people grow their own food easily by ‘just adding water.’”

Grow herbs and leafy greens all year around. Just fill up the water reservoir and the plant takes exactly what it needs when it needs it.

Based on ease, speed, taste and personal preference, the patch’s creators came up with the following top five herbs to grow in it:

1. Cilantro
2. Basil
3. Mint
4. Parsley
5. Chives

The assembly was pretty straight forward and totally self-explaining …now the following weeks will have to show how successful a novice urban gardener like me really can be

Japanese design studio YOY have developed ‘Canvas’ a series of two-dimensional hanging furniture pieces. Presented at Salone Satellite during Milan Design Week 2013, the pieces are constructed out of wood and aluminum. The resulting volume is covered by an elastic fabric – screen-printed with drawings of different types of furniture.

The piece works when the frame is leaned against a wall, stretching when weight is applied – accommodating the user within the newly formed void. Available in three different sizes, the hanging seats come in stool, love seat and sofa variations.
