Amadeus - The Brooklyn Dubwize Champion

Dubwize and Ragga Drum N’ Bass are the trademark sounds of Amadeus, self-proclaimed dubwize champion from Brooklyn, NYC, member of the worldwide Touch Crew and the tag team King City Rockaz alongside DJ I-Cue (Liquid Sky, Ingenious Music, Konkrete Jungle). Originally from Berlin (Germany), he started DJ’ing in 1998 and rose up playing clubs and raves all over Colorado during his college days. His second mix CD “Midsummer Night Sessions” (2001) was praised by BPM Magazine as “The music is sooo fine! Drum and Bass bliss. Props for not being the typical band wagon monkey. If this guy is in your neighborhood give him some props!” (February 2001 issue), and garnered him runner-up in the North-American DJ contest :”Unleash the Beats” (out of over 1000 submissions!).

Currently living in Brooklyn, he performs throughout the US, Canada and Europe, where he completed six annual tours, which took him to Germany, Belgium, France, Romania, Holland and the Czech Republic. Not only active behind the decks he hosted the monthly “King City Sundays” (also called “Plan B Dnb Sundays”) from 2006-2009 in Manhattan and was the mind behind “Survival Story – The Ragga Jungle Compilation” (2007), a double CD of previously unreleased Ragga Jungle tunes from producers worldwide, which became a runaway success. It had a massive impact on the scene, and put a lot of Ragga Jungle producers, still very active today, on the ragga jungle map.

His mixes are the single most praised part of his career, having brought in countless people to the sounds of ragga dnb / jungle due to their careful selection of tunes and highly precise mixing, traveling the globe via internet and getting very high numbers of downloads. Over the past 12 years, Amadeus has stayed the course, and is now also honing his productions skills (his tune “Realise”, a licensed remix of UK Reggae Artist Parly B has won the November 2009 Raggajungle.biz monthly producer showcase, and was played on BBC 1xtra’s Homegrown Show).

Known for highly energetic performances, Amadeus blends anything from drubwize to ragga dnb rollers to ragga-jungle. Always comin’ correct with loads of unreleased dubplates from international producers his unique sound is defined by versatility and crowd interaction, always inciting great respect and overall dancehall madness.

Make sure to check out his latest tunes and mixes at amadj.com or soundcloud.com/amadeusdubwize.

Being a good DJ does not mean playing what the crowd wants to hear, but what the crowd NEEDS to hear. Playing records, in my opinion, should be done, because it is important. Because the music itself is important, and it should be important to you. Playing a record to educate can be done for many reasons, to create a vibe, to send a message, to make people happy, take people on a journey… If you were to teach a class full of people, how would you do it? Do you think it’s effective to just throw out the conclusions and results of problems and try to force feed people with what they should know? Or would you try to find a way to get people to relate to the material, to find a personal connection, to weave a story so that a person can really understand what you’re trying to convey?

The music that you love has gravity and meaning. Its existence is of importance to you, so how do you relate that importance to others? Just as you might use popular examples, there is nothing wrong with playing chart toppers, but to just use that as teaching material would make for a superficial, often boring class, wouldn’t it? The better you get at DJ’ing, in my mind, can be equated to being better at teaching. Think of the moments when you truly learned something, of the people who truly taught you and try to emulate their approach. It was usually done in a very unique way, and as you improve with DJ’ing, you will improve the impact that you have.

Take pride and responsibility for what you pass on. Ironically, this can often be even harder when the music is very popular at the moment. If you’re passionate about something and you truly want to convey that passion, you wouldn’t want to smack people over the head with it, but truly introduce people to what you’re trying to say,
so that you can make them see what you love about it.

If you’re still looking for your voice, try to slowly integrate elements that make you unique. This can really be applied in many aspects of your life, i just think that in a time where you can DJ from your smartphone and you can get any track any time, it’s even more important (and often harder) to stand out. But longevity does not come
from one performance. It comes from a lifetime of love and passion for music. From an understanding that there is something greater than oneself and something truly important within the music you love and that it needs to be passed on.

Try to plant seeds and watch them grow, within the hearts and minds of the people you introduce to your sound. Try to be an ambassador and representative. How would you like to learn about something new? What does it mean to you to be a good teacher? What will you do to make what you consider important, be heard? Are you going to use the same curriculum, i.e. the same tunes, as everyone else? Fame might, or might never, come, but the music will survive and thrive because of you.

And isn’t that, how you got to discover it in the first place?

Featured on the “All You Need Is Bass” Podcast! Big shouts to Scott for posting this. Check it out here: http://allyouneedisbass.com/village-sessions-ep4-amadeus/

“All You Need is Bass and PK Sound are proud to present The Village Sessions. This ongoing podcast will feature the best performances from The Village stage, recorded live at Shambhala 2012.

Session four comes direct from Brooklyn’s Dubwize champion, Amadeus. Skillfully blending a warm selection of dubwize and ragga drum and bass, this set was spun during a perfect sunny Friday afternoon.

Amadeus is no stranger to dubwize and ragga drum and bass, from one of his first acclaimed mix cd’s “Midsummer Night Sessions” in 2001 to producing hit “The Brooklyn Dubwize EP” last year. His mixes and podcasts feature the best of dubwize and ragga drum and bass.

Experiencing Amadeus at The Village stage was a dream come true for many happy souls. Definetly one of my personal Shambhala highlights. This set has the power to change any mood for the best. May it bring a huge smile to your face just like the girl in the pic!”
