We have been busy building what I think is the most elegant discount management engine in the whole of the WordPress world. Lately, there’s been a growing trend to build nice little WordPress-powered Amazon shops and then sell them on Flippa for $200 or so. S that is the second way you can earn from WordPress Amazon shops.

There are probably thousands of people who make money this way … why shouldn’t you? Try it.

Today, we’re presenting you with a very simple and intuitive way to build an amazon shops using WordPress and DukaPress: Using DukaPress & WordPress To Create An Amazon Shop.

• We’ve added a REAL “Out of Stock” button so you do not have to do anything fancy to indicate that some of your products are “out of stock”.
• We’ve removed the price from being shown in the variations drop down menu. We felt that it was confusing.
• Now, when you add an item to the cart, the particular product variation (if any) that you chose is shown in the shopping cart widget.
• On the “Thank You” page, your customers will now be able to see a summary of what they have just purchased. We feel like this will add value to your shop, especially when you have the PDF invoice turned off.
• The order log page has been improved a LOT. The page now shows all the details of a particular transaction, including buyer’s contact information as well as shipping information.
• Perhaps the most interesting, we have added an “affiliate mode”. Basically, you can now have products which redirect to an external URL when you click the “Add to Cart” button. This feature has been requested severally and we are glad to finally have it added in. Learn more by clicking here.
• We crushed many bugs.

A while back we introduced premium DukaPress addons. These premium addons are meant to enable us to support the DukaPress project and keep investing time and resources into making DukaPress the most simple and most powerful WordPress e-commerce platform. Unfortunately, this has meant that ever since our initial launch, our grand ideas to make features specific to Kenya were pushed aside as we strove to build features being requested by people who actually used the software as well as serve clients.

This year, we want to try and change this a little bit. We’re working on what we think are exciting features aimed at our Kenyan users. Some of these are:

• Full Integration with ‘Kenyan’ payment gateways such as PesaPal, Iveri, and the unofficial MPESA API, PesaPi.
• Integration with related/relevant Kenyan tools such as Uhasibu
• Creating themes with a very Kenyan flavour or feel to them

What other things can we do?

WordCamp Kenya is a conference about WordPress, the world’s largest publishing & blogging software. The two day conference whose attendance included the biggest bloggers in Kenya covered topics from how to blog effectively to choosing the right content to publish.

Why beta? Before we upload it to the official WordPress plugin repository we want it to be as bug-free as possible so that it can work even better for you guys. We love you, really.

Please note that this Beta release is fairly stable and only very minor bugs remain (from our internal testing so far) and we’re actually using it in actual production websites. However, be cautious because it is indeed still beta software.

The New Stuff

We use timthumb.php to resize images. It turns out that there is a grave security risk with using an unmodified timthumb.php. The vulnerability is described here.

Timthumb 2.0 was recently made available. It represents a complete re-write of the old version with many enhanced features and security fixes. We believe that this necessitates a DukaPress update to keep our users safe. Therefore, say hello to DukaPress 2.3.3

The only thing that changes is the replacing of the old timthumb.php with timthumb.php version 2.5

How to upgrade:
1. Get the latest version of timthumb.php and replace the old one in DukaPress.
2. Download and install DukaPress 2.3.3

Fortunately, fixing this is simple. You need to open up timthumb.php and change Line 27 to look like this:

• Fixed the inventory threshold mechanism. Now you actually do get emails when stock is running low.
• Fixed the bug where if you clicked “empty cart” you were always redirected to home page.
• AlertPay and WorldPay now work correctly.
• Fixed the problem of “SalePriceLabel1″ errors on internet explorer.
• Fixed and spruced up the “inquiry mode”

Why has this taken so long? The honest truth is feature creep – we’ve been adding in ‘just one more’ feature and this has continuously led to the delay of DukaPress 2.3 being officially released. Well, no more! We aren’t adding any more until we release 2.3 and that is why we’re having a final beta testing period where we hope to find and fix as many bugs as possible.

Please note that when you download and installed it, it will still be marked as “DukaPress 2.2″. However, the differences will be very noticeable.

The good news is that we have fixed this and you can use DukaPress with Thesis again.

The problem was that when registering the DukaPress custom post type for products, we declared the menu position as follows:

‘menu_position’ => 30,

It turns out the position ’30′ conflicts with Thesis.

The simple solution si to change the “30″ to be any other number but this may bring up conflicts with other things so this is how we did it:

‘menu_position’ => null,

Therefore, if you are facing this problem, just look for menu_position in dp-products.php (inside the DukaPress php folder) and make the changes as above.

We apologise for any inconveniences that this caused you.

If you are not sure about editing code, you can download and install the “development version” of DukaPress which contains this fix.

The “Buttons in Half” Problem
Another problem is that sometimes the DukaPress buttons are cut in half. This can be fixed by CSS by including the following CSS in dpsc-basic.css inside DukaPress:

.dpsc_submit_button, .dpsc-checkout input [type='submit'] {width: 100%;}

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_IF in /home/duka1/public_html/demo2/wp-content/plugins/dukapress/php/dp-payment.php on line 1

The problem seems to be that as the FTP client uploads dp-payment.php, it corrupts that file.

The problem comes about because the FTP client is using the ASCII transfer type. This sometimes causes files to be corrupted.

Possible solutions:

1. Change your FTP transfer type to “Binary” and re-upload
2. Upload your plugin via a method other than FTP (The WordPress internal installer works GREAT)

Another solution: you need to find a way to replace the broken dp-payment.php with a copy that works. This can be done easily via “File Manager” type of programs on your server or via the WordPress plugins editor.

Hint: If this happens, you can quickly “restore” your website by renaming the DukaPress folder on your server. This disables the DukaPress plugin without forcing you to delete it from your server.
