Ashoka U, an initiative for social inovation at colleges and universities, recently recorgnized Tony Brown, and his course "Social Entrepreneurship in Action," as a 2012 Inovation Award winner.

From the Ashoka U website:

"Tony Brown of Duke University’s Hart Leadership Program had a vision to move beyond the theory of social change and use social entrepreneurship as a vehicle for student and community development. His course, “Social Entrepreneurship in Action,” helps students combine analysis, action, and personal passion to develop new social initiatives. Supporting and guiding students through the challenge of creating real results – and holding them accountable for doing so – can lead to meaningful development in the areas of agency, efficacy, and changemaker identity. In its twelfth semester, Duke celebrates nearly 60 student-led social ventures that benefit the Duke and Durham communities, many of which are still active today."

Tony Brown to Present at 2012 Jon C. Dalton Conference on College Student Values

On February 2, 2012, Tony Brown, will present his social entrepreneurship pedagogy to university educators and administrators at the 2012 Jon C. Dalton Institute on College Student Values.

The Jon C. Dalton Institute on College Student Values is an annual conference for student affairs professionals, educators, campus ministers, and graduate and undergraduate students interested in character development in college students.

The title of the session is: “Student Social Entrepreneurship: Academic Courses and Co-Curricular Support That Focus on the Creation of Sustainable Social Initiatives.” The experience will include a live exercise in creating a specific social entrepreneurship idea; an outline of the ELI social entrepreneurship course design, theory of change, and pedagogy; and data, lessons learned, and remaining questions.

Tony Brown has taught his social entrepreneurship course, PPS144s, for eleven semesters. Over 175 students have produced 58 social entrepreneurship projects intended to address important community and University needs and provide students significant personal educational experiences. While there are important lessons learned in projects never successfully launched and sustained, the feeling of empowerment and personal learning from projects with significant impact is often a signature experience in a student’s education. Of the 58 projects, 48% are considered "success stories" and 34% are still active initiatives today.

On Monday, December 14, ELI hosted an alumni gathering in New York City.

27 alumni came together to share drinks and conversation with ELI Director Tony Brown and former Director of the Hart Leadership Program, Bruce Payne. The conversation centered on "Making space for a rich life – intellectually, socially, personally, and morally – in the midst of the struggle for career success." Needless to say, it was a reflective meeting and a fruitful meeting; alumni shared thoughts on what it means to live a successful life, the challenges of this generation, the challenges specific to life in New York City, and the benefits of surrounding oneself with the "right" people.

Thank you to all who attended. It was a wonderful evening.

The team arranged for a Duke a cappella group performance by Deja Blue, and conducted a survey of market shoppers to gather data for Farmers' Market leadership. Ultimately, they sought to use the Saturday event as an opportunity to bring Duke undergraduates out to experience the market, listen to vendors' stories, and support sustainable growing practices and local farmers.

Prior to the game, participants enjoyed the games outside the stadium including a football toss, a moon bounce, and an obstacle course!

The Hart Leadership Program’s Leader in Residence, Ambassador James Joseph, recently traveled to Ireland to give the Opening Address at the First International Conference on Age-Friendly Cities, sponsored by the World Health Organization. In his speech, “Leadership and Older People: Ageing as an Asset,” Joseph argued that the emotional, social, moral, and spiritual intelligence of older people can help society in the quest for finding solutions to social problems. As a result, he urged the attendees to redirect themselves in search of social justice for the elderly. Click here to read the Ambassador’s speech.

At the conference, the mayors from 42 different cities from around the globe signed the Dublin Declaration, which committed themselves and their cities to strengthening and championing action to make their communities more age-friendly. Click here to read the Dublin Declaration.
