Retro and vintage are becoming a new trend. Once rarely used in this robust, dynamic medium, early, retro and vintage elements are now becoming more and more popular in a variety of design contexts. Online shops, corporate designs, portfolios and blogs incorporate both styles on a small and large scale. When applying “old-style” elements to their works, designers produce creative and appealing designs that make their websites stand out and look really different. As a matter of fact, if executed carefully, such designs almost never look boring, although one might intuitively think that the opposite would be the case.

Retro and vintage designs exhibit graphic solutions that are strongly influenced by the time period that they are supposed to represent. While retro focuses on the style of the 1910s to 1930s, vintage recalls the time period between the 1950s and 1980s. In both cases, design elements reflect some old-fashioned motifs, trends, personalities and objects that had been an essential part of our lives in the past.

Such elements create a nostalgic atmosphere, awaken feelings and memories and attempt to communicate information effectively using emotions. Some such designs make use of so-called “classical conditioning” — a technique used to associate a stimulus with an unconscious physical or emotional response.

The Secrets Of Vintage and Retro Designs

What elements do designers use to create a genuine vintage or retro atmosphere? What colors are used? And what kinds of graphics are usually embedded in such designs? Let’s find out. According to our research, common graphic elements for such designs are:

illustrations from old posters, movies, newspapers, CDs, vinyls, ads;
old-style typography (e.g. Roman typefaces);
script fonts and handwriting;
old radio devices;
old TV devices;
old cars;
old packaging;
old photos;
vibrant rainbow colors (high contrast, neon-style);
torn, used paper with stains (often yellowish paper);
dark, dirty colors (brown, dark red, dark blue) and textures (e.g. paper);
scrapbooks;
pop-art elements (see also Pop Art Is Alive: Classics and Modern Artworks);
retro illustrations;
old-style signs;
vintage and retro are often combined with a hand-drawing style and grunge style.

In all of these cases, designers use their creativity to offer something truly different and make the design literally stand out. Let’s take a look at some beautiful examples of what can be achieved using this technique.

El mimo de nuestra piel es una de las actividades que debemos incorporar a nuestra rutina, como lo comentábamos en el post anterior (cuidado personal + clinique fan (?). Parte 1),de esta trilogía medio fanboy!; de hoy continuo hablándoles de los productos que utilizo para cuidar el rostro :)

Debemos recordar algunos puntos a favor de la utilización de productos para el cuidado de la pie (se aceptan más para la lista):

- prevenir los signos prematuros del envejecimiento, debido al descuido a nuestro rostro,

- disminuir o reparar problemas de la piel, causados por el ambiente o propios de nuestro tipo de piel (si no sabes cuál es tu tipo, realiza este test, aprende más de él),

- otorgar ayuda defensiva a la piel contra los factores ambientales y

- colaborar-coayuda a los agente naturales de nuestra piel, para lucir un rostro saludable y radiante.

Dado lo anterior, es necesario darle un empujón a nuestro rostro! Acá una lista de los productos que utilizo, adecuados a mi tipo de piel (mixta), edad y problemas focalizados.

1 Los tres pasos

Sumamente importante LIMPIAR + TONIFICAR + HIDRATAR nuestra piel, por la mañana y en la noche.
| ¿te maquillas? - bueno antes debes aplicar un desmaquillante

Take The Day Off
Desmaquillador de ojos y labios
(es suave y desaparece cualquier tipo de delineador + máscara
a prueba de agua) +10

Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser
Desmaquillador en espuma para pieles mixtas ideal para andar en el bolso, porque nos sirve para todo el rosto y el envase es cómodo)

Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm
Bálsamo desmaquillador para rostro y ojos (uy chicas, lo amo! es suave y elimina el maquillaje de forma instantánea! :))
Ahora si, luego de desmaquillado, viene la limpieza!

Liquid Facial Soap

Jabón facial

(¡Una gotita y tendrás suficiente espuma para limpiar tu rostro! Tip: debes tener bien limpias las manos, sino gastarás todo el jabón lavando la grasa y suciedad de tus manos y no la de tu rostro!)

Rostro limpio, ahora toma un poquito de algodón, que vamos a cerrar los poros y retirar piel muerta!

Clarifying Lotion 3
Loción Clarificante 3(Debes pasarlo en una sola dirección y una sola vez y listo! piel preparada para el gel hidratante!)

Hidratante en gel sin aceites para pieles grasas con dispensador

(ummm una gotita y la esparces por todo el rostro con un masaje relajante! tu piel se siente agradecida)

2. Hidratación

¿y ahora? más cosas? esto es un suplicio! no no, es una rutina, y más que eso, un mimo para la piel, te agradece esos 10 minutos que le das!

El sol, nuestro amigo y enemigo, es fuente vital de energía para nuestro cuerpo, no obstante, la exposición tiene su límite! Debes ponerte loción con protección solar, yo lo refuerzo por medio de mi humectante!

Loción hidratante y renovadora para los labios (Adiós a los labios agrietados! pufff la sensación es deliciosa!)

3. La noche

Bueno llega la noche, repito los tres pasos: limpo + tonifico + hidrato, ahora a reparar!

Loción renovadora concentrada de efecto visible. (La sensación de una reparadora como la Turnaround es exquisita, te alisa la piel y la siente como de seda!) +1000

4. Cuidados extras!

Llegó el fin de semana! Una mascarilla, que bueno es chinear nuestro cuerpo | rostro + pies felices :)

Mascarilla renovadora inmediata (La debes usar unas 2 o 3 veces por semana, para las olvidadizas, el finde!)

Un momento, ¿sólo para las chicas? CHICOS, hombre, macho, varón, ustedes también debe cuidarse el rostro, suelen ser más perezosos para crear estos hábitos, sin embargo, es esencial los tres pasos + protección solar!

El damasco? debo confesar que este post es el culpable de revivir mi gusto por el damasco! Ideas + creatividad + inspiración!

Si dentro de nuestro gusto no entra el empapelar paredes de nuestros ambientes, no quiere decir que este elemento no pueda ser de ayuda en el momento de dar estilo a una habitación. Solo hace falta creatividad y por otro lado, tenemos que tener en cuenta que es una forma de decorar económicamente y con estilo, algo que todos buscamos hoy en día.

Vamos a ver imágenes en las cuales se ven formas originales de usar el empapelado. Por ejemplo, veremos hermosos diseños ubicados bajo una mesa de vidrio, como cabecera de nuestra cama, en cuadros y hasta decorando escaleras. Lo importante es que nos demos un rato para encontrar la inspiración que nos hace falta y nos animemos a probar en dónde quedaría bien nuestro diseño.

[How to] Crear un ambiente feng shui en el dormitorio

Feng shui es el sistema chino que nos ayuda a vivir en armonía con los elementos y las fuerzas naturales de la tierra. Se trata de equilibrar nuestro Chi y gira en torno a las fuerzas de Yin/Yang.

En un dormitorio según las reglas de Feng Shui hay que dar protagonismo a la fuerza Yin, por ser la fuerza feminina o pasiva (el Yang es la fuerza masculina o activa). Aquí ofrecemos unos consejos para ayudarles a diseñar su dormitorio según el sistema Feng shui y lograr un descanso mucho más enriquecedor.

Los colores de la habitación

Las paredes deben ser de colores pasteles suaves y las alfombras deben ser de colores claros para poder mezclarse con los demás elementos del dormitorio. Las sábanas, fundas, mantas y almohadas (que deben ser todas de telas naturales y no sintéticas) también deben ser de colores pasteles. Hay que evitar colores fuertes como el rojo y utilizar por el contrario colores suaves que inducen al descanso y sosiego.

Orientación de la cama

Esto supone uno de los aspectos fundamentales del dormitorio. Debe estar colocada de tal forma que la cabeza o los pies de la(s) persona(s) dentro nunca estén mirando la puerta. Es importante poder ver la puerta y orientar la cama para que nuestra cabeza esté apuntando hacia el norte o hacia el este. Nada debe colgar encima de la cama y no deben haber trastos por debajo. Una buena cabecera aporta sensación de seguridad. Se debe intentar no dormir por debajo de la ventana, pero si no se puede evitar, pues es importante tapar la ventana con una cortina opaca.

Uso del dormitorio

Muy importante que el dormitorio solo se utilice para dormir o hacer el amor. No deben haber aparatos eléctricos (tipo televisión, equipo de música) y tampoco aparatos para hacer ejercicio dentro del dormitorio porque tienen energía activa. Si no los puede retirar del dormitorio, hay que taparles con una tela. Tampoco debe haber ordenador presente - ni siquiera papeles o apuntes de trabajo, ya que cualquier objeto relacionado con su trabajo puede interferir con su sueño.

Adornos en la habitación

No se deben colocar dos espejos uno enfrente del otro, porque se creará energía negativa en el espacio entre ellos. Se debe evitar luces fuertes, optando por luces tenues con pantallas suaves que emiten paz y tranquilidad. También hay que evitar adornos o cuadros relacionados con el agua. Según la teoría Feng Shui el agua agudiza problemas de alergia, asma y otros problemas respiratorios. Colgar unos cristales en la ventana - estos reflejarán la luz del sol y aportarán una luz muy especial.

Orden en el dormitorio

La habitación debe estar siempre ordenada, además de ventilada y ni demasiado caliente ni demasiado frio. Hay que evitar tener cosas por el suelo - el desorden está totalmente en contra de los principios de Feng Shui.

¡Si, lo confieso! Soy fan de los productos Clinique, pero ante todo, debo agradecer a mi madre, las enseñanzas, prácticas y educación en general, sobre el cuidado personal.

Cuidar la piel debe ser una prioridad en nuestra rutina diaria, siendo el órgano de mayor extensión en el ser humano. En el blog de la ñ hablaremos, especialmente, de como cuidar nuestra cara.

En un mundo donde la imagen es tomada en cuenta para obtener la aprobación de otros (aunque no nos guste la idea, reality check!), y ante todo, por que somos los responsables de como se ve, debemos pensar más allá, y pues mejora nuestra CALIDAD DE VIDA, y eso implica querernos integralmente!

La continuación, en el siguiente post hablaré sobre los productos Clinique que utilizo para el cuidado del rostro y el tercer y último post (no solo @inti hace triologías :P), les mostraré mi maquillaje :D

Designing a blog can be quite a daunting task, to be sure. To-do lists alone for could fill pages if you were to include all the minor details that accompany the project. Which is why most designers shy away from logging that in-depth of a laundry list of items, indispensable and not so much, to get done by the launch date of the blog. Which is also why some of these little things that would make the latter pages of the list, more often than not, get overlooked. Never fear, that is why we are here!

It is an easy thing to do when so much is on your plate, to let one or two of the smaller details silently slip through the cracks, remaining hidden in the dark crevasses in the backs of our minds. And though this checklist may not be as long as I exaggerated such a comprehensive to-do list would be, this is a list of nine very important details that many blog designers overlook. These are often thought of as so minor that it makes little to no difference in the overall design of your blog. However, these features can serve to top things off, design wise, and act as some simple finishing touches that step up your blog’s presentation, and thereby, its presence.

1. Favicon

How important can a tiny 16×16 pixel square be? Well, I guess the true answer to that, would be relatively based on how important your branding is to you. Favicons not only take your branding a step further in solidifying it, but they also make for easily recognizable bookmarks for your readers. And any steps that you can take to improve your reader’s experience is always a worthwhile time investment that will pay off in the end. It may be one small step for you, but it will be one giant leap for your blog.

2. Subtle use of gradients, textures, shadows & single pixel lines

…Oh my! That is a bit of a list in and of itself, but it is better seen as a number of available options at the blog designer’s disposal to enhance their work. These small details give a design depth and keep things from looking flat and boring. You want your design to be pleasing to the eye, to appeal to your readers and entice new ones to check out your site. If the site looks dull and drab, then more times than not, people may judge the content and bloggers to be the same. Make the right first impression through your design with these subtle inclusions, and you will not be sorry that you took the extra time.

3. Icons

Coming in third on the list (though to be fair, they are not listed in any kind of order of importance, because they are all important), focuses on you finding or making the right set of icons to fluidly fit into your design. There are literally thousands of icon sets that have been graciously given to the community, so give this search the time it needs to be thorough. Or again, create a set of custom icons to complement your theme. You want these elements to mix seamlessly with your site, so as to not detract from your flow and design. Also make sure to use link icons to let people know what kind of link they are following. Again, this is just a matter of courtesy to your readers.

4. Whitespace

This is one I have had to struggle with myself, but you can learn from my shortcomings without succumbing to them yourself. Do not fall into the same trap I fell into, feeling that just because you have empty space it has to be filled with something, anything…it didn’t matter if it served the design or not, the whitespace had to go. Through growing as a designer, and strict bi-weekly aversion therapy sessions, I was able to break free from my bad design stranglehold and see the light. Keeping whitespace makes your blog look clean and not overly cluttered, not to mention it really aids in making the content stand out.

5. Alignment

I understand that out of the box thinking which often leads to a lot of innovative design techniques, so I do not want to cramp anyone’s style, or more so their alignment, with this next topic. Alignment can be very important for your site, simply because of the symmetrical feel and flow it can provide to your design. It is a scientifically argued point, that people respond favorably to symmetry and through use of a grid, you can ensure that your elements are all in line, so to speak, and are visually stimulating to a majority of the masses who will be interacting with your blog. By all means, buck the system if you want, but my advice would be to use a grid for initially laying out your blog design then, if necessary, break the grid.

6. Typography

What is a blog without words? Other than a non-descriptive gallery with no context, protext, or any kind of text. Kidding, but seriously, making sure that the typography you have chosen for your blog is eye catching, is definitely one to consider, that some designers overlook. Like with most media, your headlines have to stand out and grab reader’s attention to draw them in. A blog is no different. You may think that what it says is all you need worry with, but you would be wrong. Making sure that the fonts used are clear and readable are beyond a must, they are…something that is beyond a must. If either your headlines or your body type are not clear, people are not going to stick around long trying to decipher your typography.

7. Emphasis

This is another area where I know better than I perform, but I am working on it, and that is placing emphasis throughout the posts and site to make the blog a bit more user friendly as well. With so much going on in your posts and your blog, it is easy for a reader to become overwhelmed, or simply not have the time to fully concentrate, and so the user merely skims them both looking for something to catch their eye. Make sure that you take this into consideration and bold important information for users to make it stand out for them. Also, be sure to have your links highlighted in a complimentary color to make sure they do not get overlooked by the busy reader, as well. Once again, it is always beneficial to your blog to take the extra steps that improve the users overall experience, and this is one of them.

8. Styling Lists & Blockquotes

One of the main focuses of your blog will be the posts you put up, so make sure you do not undercut your site by under-styling your content. You want to demonstrate pride in your work as you present it to your audience, and one way to easily achieve this is through your style-sheet. Having well styled lists and blockquotes can do a lot to not only enhance the look of your posts, but if you have guest authors it opens up the format for their posts a bit. Having a limited style-sheet may effectively tie the hands of your guest writers who do not like having their posts presentation seeming bland and unsophisticated. So they opt to leave out elements that would normally give the post a bit more presentational punch and pizazz.

9. Separate Comments from Trackbacks

The final design detail that tends to get underestimated or under-valued that I want to talk about here, is the separation of comments from the article’s trackbacks. While it is understandable for you to want to not only recognize those who link to your work, but also to keep those links in the post for prominence and relevance, you have to keep in mind that it can be frustrating for a reader to have to sift through trackbacks mixed in with comments. Taking the time to distill the two elements apart from each other on your blog will help with the flow of readability, and once more show a dedication to the user friendliness of your site. As I said, it is nice to want to include these links kindly extended to your work, but that is generally not what the readers who comb through your comments are looking to read.

7 Rules for Mixing Multiple Fonts in Good Web Design

Typography can be one of the most creatively rewarding parts of web design, but it can also be one of the most frustrating. Working with just one or two fonts can be challenging enough for most web designers, yet some still insist on using three, four, seven, or even more fonts in their designs. Some people excel at creating sites with complicated typography, while others fail miserably. Read on to find out tricks to creating fantastic website designs with complicated type, as well as some great examples of sites that get it right, and those that get it wrong.

1. Pay attention to scale and proportion.

Multiple fonts work best together when they have similar proportion and scale. For example, Georgia and Verdana have similar shapes, even though one is serif and one is sans serif. The same could be said for Times New Roman and Arial Narrow. Look at specific characters in each font to see how similar they are, as well as entire words.
Fonts don’t necessarily have to be identical in scale and proportion. What you want to look for are either fonts that are very, very similar, or fonts that are very, very different. Fonts that are “kind of the same” are generally going to look strangest when placed near each other. Fonts that are very similar are going to appear to have the same weight on screen in most cases, while fonts that are very different can more easily be played against one another to give emphasis to specific parts of the site.

2. Unify fonts with color or style.

If you throw up six different fonts on your site, with ten different colors, and four different styles, you’re probably just going to give your visitors a headache (if they stick around that long). While you don’t necessarily have to only use one color or one style, you need to be much more careful in how you use them.
As far as colors go, try to stick to colors either in the same hue or saturation level. You want the colors to mesh, rather than clash.
You have a bit more leeway with font styles, but make sure that the styles you choose make sense with the existing weight and emphasis of the particular fonts you’ve chosen. You can make a heavier font oblique (italic) to de-emphasize it’s weight a bit, or add a strong tag to a lighter-weight font to bring it more in-line with the heavier fonts on your page. Underlining can emphasize both light and heavy fonts without making either appear heavier than they already are.

3. Pay attention to priority and emphasis of different fonts.

This has been touched on a bit already, but the priority and emphasis that different fonts convey naturally has to be taken into account. Some fonts are going to draw more attention than others. It’s one reason using multiple fonts is both incredibly fun and very hard to get right.
You can compensate for heavier or lighter fonts in a few ways. Increasing or decreasing the size is the most obvious. Adding styles and font decorations (oblique, strong, underline, etc.) can also emphasize and even help de-emphasize most fonts.
Changing the color of a font can help, too. If your typography is mostly black, adding in shades of gray to de-emphasize certain parts can work really well. In fact, putting certain type in gray can work even if your design is more colorful (to really unify things, make sure the gray has just a hint of one of the main colors in your other typography).

4. Avoid anything too similar.

Similar fonts are tricky. Using something like Georgia and Garamond right near each other, for example, doesn’t really do much and can end up making one or both fonts look a little off. A lot of non-designer folks might not really see the differences between the fonts and think they just look strange—not quite right. The same can be said for fonts like Verdana and Tahoma or Arial and Helvetica. Try for a bit more variation for the best end-result.

5. Keep body text readable.

While playing around with funky typography can work really well in navigation, headers, and other parts of your site, large chunks of body copy just don’t work well with multiple typefaces. Stick to one, preferably site-wide. Pick a font that’s easy to read and web safe while also being similar in proportion and weight to the other fonts on your site.

6. Don’t overlook different font styles.

We’ve talked about how using different styles and font decorations can change the priority and importance of different typographic elements. But one thing many designers overlook is using multiple styles, sizes, and decorations to achieve the look of mixed typography while still working entirely with web-safe fonts. This technique is also great for designers who are just starting to experiment with web typography, as it eliminates many of the common issues with proportion and scale between different typefaces. Mix italic, bold, small caps, all caps and other styles within the same fonts to get the look of mixed typefaces without the headaches.

7. Trust your instincts.

This is probably the most important thing on this list. Whenever you’re designing anything, you should be sure to take a step back from it often and look at the big picture. If something doesn’t look right or feel right to you, cut it.
It’s no different with typography. If a certain font just doesn’t seem to be working, you’ll have to cut something. In these cases, you have two options: you can cut that font and find another one that works better, or you can scrap all your other fonts and find ones that work better with the one you’re having trouble with. What you do depends on which fonts you’re more attached to.

Here’s a collection of sites that use multiple fonts really well. Most use between three and five fonts, and sometimes in really creative ways (there’s at least one case where the ampersand in the header is a different font than basically everything else on the site).

Un espacio para compartir información sobre cosas que me gustan y no hay lugar donde ponerlas! Qué mejor espacio, que un blog dulce!

Encontrarás sobre temas que me obsesionan (?) o mínimo tienen el poder de llamarme la atención y esos son:

GTD: la regla de los 2 minutos

Fácil y útil...

Como parte de mi proceso de aprender sobre qué es y como implementar el GTD (Getting Things Done), quiero contarles que existe una regla realmente útil: la regla de los 2 minutos.

¿En qué consiste? Al presentarse una tarea/actividad y la puedes completar en menos de 2 minutos, hazla!

Es realmente efectiva, sólo debes reconocer esas pequeñas tareas que salen en nuestro diario vivir, que a veces por insignificantes o rutinarias las dejamos para luego (procrastinar?). Claro, los 2 minutos es una guía, significa que son actividades que se pueden completar de manera inmediata! Sin más o menor tiempo, lo haces y la das por hecha!

Ejemplos

- El correo electrónico: ese e-mail que nos ingresa al inbox y el tema no va más allá de confirmar una cita o enviar información que ya tenemos recopilada.

- Teléfono: realizar/devolver una llamada telefónica.

La realización de este pequeña práctica nos ayuda a enfocarnos en grandes tareas y no lamentarlos luego, por olvidar aquella simple tarea que “dejamos para más tarde” y no necesitaba más de 2 minutos para realizarla!

Ahhh! no necesitas ser usuario del GTD para implementarla… te invito a hacer la prueba!

Getting Things Done, nos organiza!

Iniciamos... Aumentar nuestra productividad y organizarnos es una tarea que algunos nos gusta mejorar, y más cuando tienes varios proyectos marchando junto al diario vivir. Por tal razón, he investigado sobre un método que facilita el ajetreo de cumplir con nuestras tareas de forma óptima.

Es.Getting Things Done, conocido por sus siglas, GTD, es un método de gestión de las actividades y el título de un libro de David Allen, traducido al español como: Tener las cosas hechas (vía wikipedia), el cual consta de 04 principios (recopilar + procesar + organizar + revisar).

Necesito. Ganas de organizarme eficiente y eficazmente + lápiz + papel… Así de sencillo, claro ya hablaremos de las herramientas gratis que andan por la red para agilizar el trabajo!

Y ahora? Cómo? Debemos iniciar… nuestros primeros pasos:

Organiza todos los documentos que haya sobre tu escritorio hasta que este vacío y ordenado.
Procesa tu correo electrónico y bandeja de entrada hasta vaciarla.
Realiza un brainstorming de tareas e ideas en un cuaderno o dispositivo móvil.
Establece un sistema clasificatorio sencillo.
Crea listas conceptuales de todas tus acciones, así como una lista de proyectos, una lista de “en espera” y otra de “Algún día/quizás”
Utiliza un calendario o un sistema de archivos para recordar futuras tareas o compromisos que han de realizarse “imprescindiblemente” ese día.
Haz una revisión semanal para mantener el método en orden y redefinir tus prioridades.

Mis primeros pasos

Iniciando en la vida de los blogs, si señores, ya es hora que escriba en el blog, parece que solo lo tenía de adorno como requisito de una chica en la red.

De que se trata mi blog? bueno ese tema lo he ido pensando por varios días y creo que el topic que he escogido para inciar es adecuado, redactaré una guía básica sobre como buscar estudios de posgrado y las becas, basado en mi experiencia (laboral y académica).

Si si.. ya les contaré más a detalle sobre el asunto, por ahora me toca dominar bien el editor de WP.
